Shopee teams up with DHL eCommerce in Thailand to offer a seamless delivery experience

DHL eCommerce, a division of the world’s leading logistics company, Deutsche Post DHL Group, is partnering with Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, to offer greater convenience and choice to Shopee users in Thailand. Sellers on Shopee can now access over 500 DHL ServicePoints across Thailand to drop off their parcels and have them delivered to their shoppers across Thailand. Alternatively, sellers can also arrange a pickup from DHL for door-to-door delivery service to their buyers.

“We are thrilled to be partnering Shopee to offer greater ease, choice and control over  the online delivery experience. Shoppers’ expectations are growing with regards to their entire purchasing experience — they expect a great and seamless experience from the time they click to purchase until the goods are received. A recent report states that 60% of consumers purchased from one online merchant over another because delivery options were more convenient for their needs, highlighting the pivotal role of delivery in the overall online shopping experience[1] ,” says Kiattichai Pitpreecha, Managing Director, Southeast Asia, DHL eCommerce.

“Shopee is excited to work with DHL eCommerce and we are confident that our users will benefit from the suite of services and features offered by DHL. We aim to become the online shopping destination of choice in all our markets and will continue to explore synergies between the two companies to make both buying and selling on Shopee as easy and seamless as possible,” says Terence Pang, Chief Operating Officer of Shopee.

DHL’s domestic delivery network in Thailand offers high quality delivery service and a range of other services, such as easy IT and API integration, end-to-end tracking, delivery insurance, cash on delivery and more, tailored for the booming e-commerce industry. This enables sellers and leading brands on Shopee to efficiently reach out to customers across the country. Shoppers on the other hand will benefit from the consistent quality and convenience of delivery options. DHL eCommerce will also be growing its ServicePoint footprint in Thailand to over a thousand in the coming months to offer increased touchpoints with users.

To mark the start of the partnership, Shopee and DHL will be extending a limited period free shipping promotion. Shopee sellers can enjoy free shipping nationwide (terms and conditions apply) from now until 30 June 2018 when they select DHL as the logistics provide for their shipments.

  • Unilever rides market shifts

    Unilever rides market shifts

UNILEVER Thailand said it aims to boost people’s livelihoods while pursuing growth in the Thai market and reducing environmental impacts under a strategy it hails as 2022 Growing Together. Robert Candelino, head of Unilever Thailand, said that outlook for the consumer market in Thailand is tough.

“I think the consumer market is desperate for new excitement and more energy I think there are so many changes happening that have never been before in history This includes in media, retail, consumer habits, buying preferences, demography and society – colliding all at once,” Candelino said

“This is why it’s important to have a purpose at the core to go through this storm and to understand what you stand for in your values, the people you hire, the type of initiatives and what principally we want to do as a company”

He said that the dynamic of the Thai economy is changing rapidly.

“We (Unilever) as a business need to change continuously We have now lots of new and exciting channels – traditional retail shops, substantial big modern trade, online and social networks – to serve people and to improve the lives of Thais every day,” said Candelino

He said that the biggest challenge today is probably the transformation of retail and that of consumer behaviour.

“We’ve had a model that’s been there for 30-40 years You get in the car or get on the train, and then go to the store and buy your items, putting in the basket You pay for it, then you leave and go home That model served all of us well for decades and that model is now being challenged,” he said “It’s still there but it’s changing Convenient channels, proximity channels, mom and pop shops, they’re all becoming more and more relevant as part of people’s lives

“All of these changes in retail and the behaviour of people mean that, as a consumer products company, our job is to meet people where they need and want us to be at the end of phone, at the end of a computer terminal, or a local shop or at the doorstep one hour after they ordered from us We need to be everywhere We understand this ecosystem, and people deserve to be more demanding That’s what happening and, as a consequence, everyone needs to change”

He said that globally, Unilever has succeeded in integrating the principle of sustainable living into the company’s business practices since 2010.

Unilever’s Sustainable Living brands deliver over 60 per cent of the company’s total growth, and grew more than 50 per cent faster than the rest of the business in 2016, Candelino said

“These outcomes demonstrate that Unilever has become more competitive by integrating sustainability into our business,” he said “In Thailand, Unilever is ranked as the market leader in seven major product segments including laundry detergents, hair cleansing products, skin cleansing products, detergents, Jok rice porridge products, and ice cream and skin care.

“We are proud of the fact that 99 per cent of 24.7 million households in Thailand make a purchase from Unilever’s product portfolio, with a repeat-buy rate of over 99 per cent, and that our consumers use our products three times a day”

Candelino said that with the company’s high household penetration of its consumer products, it aims to expand the pie with the introduction of new benefits, new platforms, new businesses and new itemsSuch methods will help expanding the market universe, he said.

To aid this effort, Unilever has implemented what it calls the 3Ps – for purpose, people and performance. Unilever aims to offer consumers improved well-being on a daily basis The Unilever Sustainable Living Plan (USLP) applies to ll Unilever employees and contributes to the company’s business practices to drive business growth while supporting communities Unilever is also committed to reducing its environmental footprint and increasing its positive social impacts, the chief executive said.

lPeople: Unilever’s employees are encouraged to pass on greater value to customers by providing them with excellent value from the company’s portfolio of products “As our customers benefit, it is important that everyone is motivated and happy in their work environment,” Candelino said.

lPerformance: By building innovation in each product segment to meet the requirements of consumers through the company’s sustainable livelihood policy and improving the purpose and capacities of employees, Unilever is confidant of increased growth in each of the targeted product segments while delivering products that contribute to better livelihoods for consumers, Candelino said.

  • YAANA Corporate Challenge Announced for September in Thailand

YAANA Corporate Challenge Announced for September in Thailand

Companies across Asia are being invited to join the 2nd YAANA Corporate Challenge, which will take place in Chiang Mai, Thailand, 21-23 September 2018.

The 2-day/3-night corporate networking event has been designed for business people interested in environmental best practice. By day, the participants ride bicycles to see the best of northern Thailand scenery. Participation in the bike rides raises funds for Operation Smile Thailand. The charity pays for operations for Thai children to fix debilitating deformities such as cleft lip.

Evenings in Chiang Mai will feature relaxed activities such as a cocktail reception and dinner to replenish calories burnt by day. The Friday evening dinner will feature a guest speaker. The closing dinner on Sunday night will take place at an iconic location in Chiang Mai city.

The annual cycle ride was conceived by responsible tourism investor, YAANA Ventures. Khiri Travel and cycle trip specialists, Grasshopper Adventures, will handle logistics. YAANA is leading the sign-up and fundraising component.

“It is not a cycle race,” says Mark Remijan, CFO of YAANA Ventures. “Far from it. Our priority is corporate networking and fundraising based on sustainability and conservation themes. It’s also about health, enjoying amazing scenery, and raising funds that will enhance young people’s lives.”

Only a moderate amount of fitness is required. The bike ride element will offer two options: 140kms or 100kms over two days. This comes with full back up support van and plenty of good food and refreshments along the way.

Last year the male and female riders in the YAANA Corporate Challenge raised US$25,000 for Operation Smile. They are targeting around US$40,000 this year.

The funds will be used to pay for operations, after care and speech therapy for Thai children born with facial deformities. Kind-hearted companies can sign up teams of one to three riders depending on their sponsorship package: platinum (three riders for THB175,000/US$5,600), gold (two riders for THB125,000/US$4,000), or silver (a single rider at THB75,000/US$2,400).

Packages include bikes with full technical support, accommodation, corporate branding, apparel, meals, souvenirs, publicity for participating brands, and more.

The inaugural YAANA Corporate Challenge bike ride took place in coastal central Vietnam in September 2017. Companies interested in participating this year can view the Vietnam clip as a guide to what to expect in Chiang Mai.

The YAANA Corporate Challenge is open to business leaders from any sector, says Willem Niemeijer, CEO of YAANA Ventures.

“Participants from any industry can join,” says Niemeijer. “They should be passionate about people and planet as well as profits – and ready to get in the saddle to enjoy great scenery by day, and the exchange of ideas in the evening.”

  • Supernap Wins Datacloud Asia Awards for “Excellence in Data Centre Service Southeast Asia”

Supernap Wins Datacloud Asia Awards for “Excellence in Data Centre Service Southeast Asia”

SUPERNAP Thailand, the recognized leader in colocation services, won “Excellence in Data Centre Service Award Southeast Asia” and the best “Data Centre Location Award” at Datacloud Asia 2018 held at the Capella Hotel in Singapore recently. It is the first time that a data center in Thailand won an award from the international premier conference for data centres and cloud technology in the region.

The awards recognize SUPERNAP Thailand as the leading Southeast Asia data center provider for its most efficient, high density and ultrascale capacity. Chonburi Province, where SUPERNAP Thailand is located, is recognized as the most attractive location for attracting operators and cloud services providers. Chonburi province is part of the EEC (Eastern Economic Corridor) zone and is strategically positioned for the submarine cables and “one belt one road” project.  It is Thailand’s new flagship investment zone designed to accommodate next-generation industries and meet the Thailand 4.0 policy.

The Datacloud Asia award recognizes genuine innovation and the continuing evolution in the flourishing Asia digital infrastructure market.

“Datacloud Asia goes from strength to strength and the award winners mirror the optimism, dynamism and entrepreneurism that is permeating throughout the region,” said Mr. Philip Low, Host of Datacloud Asia and President of BroadGroup. “The rapid development of the Asian data economy can lead global innovation and break down old mindsets from many aspects.”

“We are extremely honored to accept the awards, that are a testimonial to our efforts in providing the excellent and the most trusted data center service to our customers in Thailand and across the region, said Mrs. Sunita Bottse, Managing Director of SUPERNAP Thailand. “Moving towards the transformation of the economy, we foresee that the demand for innovative, scalability, security, redundancy, and availability will tremendously increase.

We will remain steadfast in our commitment to continue to deliver excellent customer service, thus powering their ability to the greater success.”

SUPERNAP Thailand was one of five nominees for the Excellence in Data Center Service Award. The company won over its counterparts from South Korea, Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Singapore. Revolutionary innovations such as tri-redundant power systems, modular building design and 100% heat containment technologies allow SUPERNAP Thailand to efficiently facilitate client growth without current or future concerns over reliability of power supply, cooling, connectivity or space. The award reiterates SUPERNAP Thailand’s positioning as the most trusted world-class purpose-built data center for customers with a long-term vision to develop Thailand’s presence as a serious data center hub for Asia Pacific.

While the award for best “Data Center Location” recognizes Chonburi Province as a prime location for data centers in Asia,  it succeeded over three other locations nominated from China, India, and Malaysia. This strongly confirms that SUPERNAP Thailand has been cited as the best strategic location to provide support for growth for all investors in Asia. In addition, SUPERNAP Thailand is located outside Bangkok’s flood zone and 110 metres above sea level and able to access numerous national and international telecommunications carriers with proximity 27km to the international cable landing station.

Established in 2017, SUPERNAP Thailand targets customers from government bodies, the banking and finance sectors, insurance and healthcare providers, cloud solution providers, and e-commerce companies both in-country and across ASEAN countries.

  • Alibaba in a smart deal with the Thai government

Alibaba in a smart deal with the Thai government

China’s Alibaba Group will partner with the Thai government to build a smart digital trading hub in Thailand while also working to develop its capabilities in e-commerce, digital logistics, tourism and training.

Alibaba says it will work with Thailand on everything from boosting efficiencies in trade to educating Thai entrepreneurs and SMEs in digital commerce. The partnership will give Thailand access to technologies and processes that can help advance its economy, while Alibaba gains a stronger foothold in an important market in Southeast Asia.

Local news media has valued Alibaba’s Thai investment commitments at THB11 billion (US$352 million).

The smart digital hub, in Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor, will use technologies from Alibaba and its logistics platform Cainiao Network to streamline trade between Thailand and China and other markets, including digitising the customs process.

At the same time, Alibaba and the Thai government say they will develop educational initiatives for SMEs and entrepreneurs to learn best practices for e-commerce. Included are courses co-developed by Alibaba Business School and Thailand’s Ministries of Industry and Commerce, as well as training centered on the digital economy at Alibaba Business School in Hangzhou.

Under the deal, Thailand also gains greater access to China’s consumer market. Thai products such as fragrant rice, durian and other tropical fruits are in demand in China.

In a related move, a flagship store has been launched on Alibaba’s Tmall platform to sell Thai rice, the country’s main export.

Alibaba’s online travel platform Fliggy is part of the arrangement because of Thailand’s popularity as a destination for Chinese tourists. Fliggy and the Tourism Authority of Thailand will work to develop smart and digital services for those visitors, including online tour guides and electronic ticketing systems.

  • Big C Engages Its Customers Across Southeast Asia with Personalized Marketing

Big C Engages Its Customers Across Southeast Asia with Personalized Marketing

Symphony RetailAI, the leading global provider of Artificial Intelligence-enabled decision platforms, solutions and customer-centric insights that drive validated growth for retailers and CPG manufacturers, today announced that Big C is implementing its SR Personalized Marketing solution.

Headquartered in Bangkok, Thailand, Big C is a leading omnichannel retailer in Thailand and Southeast Asia with hypermarkets, supermarkets, convenience, health and beauty formats, and online and ecommerce channels. With Asia accounting for four out of the top 15 countries globally where internet users spend the most time on social media worldwide, the region’s consumers are highly connected, tech-savvy, socially fluid and vocal. They want personalization, crave rewarding experiences and have a strong desire for convenience and immediacy.

Shifting strategic engagement to meet cultural changes in what consumers want

Thailand is undergoing significant lifestyle changes. Urbanization, millennial influence, mobile technology, and rising incomes are driving demand for and the rapid growth of the convenience channel, with Big C alone opening two new convenience outlets every three days. Already one of the leading nations for eating away from home, Thais have significantly increased their appetite for ready-to-eat options from convenience channels. Adding to these significant shifts, the country currently has one of the highest social-media adoption rates worldwide. With this as a backdrop, Big C relaunched its loyalty program which had been initiated years prior, but wanted to engage its 6.2 million customers on a deeper, more emotional level.

The company is now aggressively moving to build a new personalization program founded around the customer lifecycle. It is working towards personalization at basket and/or category level(s) and sending personalized digital offers via text, a mobile app and a program website. In addition to using SR Personalized Marketing — an omni-channel solution that leverages embedded algorithms and a relevancy engine to ensure that each shopper’s communication is appropriate, timely and individualized — Big C is adopting the solution’s mobile capabilities. This will allow the retailer to leverage a geofencing mobile app that interacts with shoppers at the right moment and in the right place, delivering timely and relevant messages. This is a key component of the Big C strategy around its changing customer demographic.

“The Southeast Asia region is one of the most rapidly changing regions of the world when we consider grocery,” said Gary Hardy, Chief Operating Officer, Big C. “Our customers are demanding more variety, convenience, flexibility, and an enhanced service. They want ‘round-the-clock omnichannel experiences that match their changing lifestyles. As a result, we need to engage customers on a more 1:1 basis, focusing on digital touchpoints and moment marketing to improve the entire shopping experience for our customers.”

“We’ve had a great working partnership with Big C for over six years,” said Oscar Garcia-Velasco, Regional Vice President, Symphony RetailAI, Asia. “We are very excited to see Big C taking this next step in their ongoing evolution to serve their customers. Understanding how to best use customer data to enhance relationships through more relevant, personalized offers is key to success. Embracing the role of mobile in how their customers want to engage with them, will help Big C create a competitive edge and increase customer loyalty.”

  • True Move told to consider compensation over data leak

True Move told to consider compensation over data leak

Thai telecoms regulator NBTC has instructed mobile operator True Move H to assess the impact of its recent personal data leak and offer compensation to any affected customers.

The regulator also plans to conduct a formal investigation into the incident and consider imposing punishments, and issue a letter demanding that mobile operators take appropriate steps to prevent similar breaches in the future.

A security researcher recently revealed that the identity documents of up to 45,736 customers of True subsidiary iTrueMart had been exposed by being stored in a publicly-accessible Amazon S3 data bucket. The company also took more than a month to finally make the cache of files private.

Researcher Niall Merrigan discovered the cache by scanning certificate transparency logs created when someone creates a new security certificate.

Yet True Move H and parent True Corp are continuing to characterize the action as a data breach. A True Corp executive told that the company is considering taking legal action for hacking the data from the system, stating that he used “special tools to access data which he has no right to get into.”

But a cloud expert noted that because the default setting for the AWS S3 service is private, True had to have intentionally set the data to public.

Royal Dragon Vodka TR agent Yam Seng Pte Ltd has secured a new listing for Royal Dragon Vodka with King Power Thailand.

The Imperial 1 litre and Elite Flavoured Collection are part of the Royal Dragon Vodka assortment available at departure stores in Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

As reported earlier this month, Yam Seng secured a new listing for the brand with Ever Rich Duty Free in Taiwan.

Yam Seng Pte Ltd Sales and Marketing Director Jesreen Sidhu said: “We’ve been building Royal Dragon Vodka’s presence across different markets for the past three months and our most recent listing with King Power Thailand is an indication of steady growth.

“Suvarnabhumi Airport is a strategic location for us as it is a key hub for Southeast Asian travel and receives a growing influx of global tourists.”

Singapore-based Yam Seng Pte Ltd, a company owned by the Tuli family, is the appointed agent for the ultra-premium vodka brand in selected key duty-free markets.

  • True customers’ identity records exposed in data leak

True customers’ identity records exposed in data leak

Thailand’s True Corp has fixed a data leak involving the exposure of identity records on up to around 45,000 of its customers.

Security researcher Niall Merrigan discovered personal data on customers of True Corp’s e-commerce subsidiary iTrueMart (now WeMall) stored in a public-facing Amazon S3 bucket in March.

The 32GB data cache included 45,736 files, consisting mainly of JPG and PDF scans of identity documents including scanned ID cards, drivers licenses and possibly passports.

In a blog post, Merrigan said he informed True Corp’s mobile unit True Move H about the breach on March 10, but the company took no action until he went to the media in early April. The files were finally made private on April 12.

Merrigan indicated that True Corp seems to be misrepresenting the incident as a hack, but there was no security on the data bucket and anybody could have found and downloaded all the files.

Telecoms regulator NBTC is investigating the incident, and may impose penalties on True Corp for exposing customer information. The stored identity records may have been collected as part of the Thai government’s mandatory SIM registration scheme, which has already been a target of identity thieves and has been opposed by privacy advocates.

  • Nok Air touches down at Mae Hong Son

Nok Air touches down at Mae Hong Son

Nok Air landed smoothly at Mae Hong Son Airport in a maiden flight that re-established the long-awaited direct air link between Bangkok and the northwestern city.

The arrival of flight DD8214, operated by a 72-seat ATR72-500 turboprop, marks a new era for easy connection between the Thai capital and “the city of three mists.”

Officiating the launch was Transport Minister Arkom Termpitthayapaisith, Mae Hong Son Governor Suebsak Aiamwijan, Nok Air CEO Mr. Piya Yodmani, Thai Airways International (THAI) Acting President Usanee Sangsingkeo and THAI Smile Acting Managing Director Chatchai Panyoo.

The city was without direct service from Bangkok for decades mainly because of limited demand for both leisure and business travel.

But with Nok Air’s newly-introduced services, at three flights a week, Mae Hong Son’s economy, particularly its high-potential tourism industry, will be given an impetus.

The launch quickly responds to the Government’s recent directive to enhance access to the province whose economic and social development has been in greater focus, said Mr. Piya.

The introduction was also made possible by cooperation extended by THAI and subsidiary THAI Smile which became code-share partners for the flight under the umbrella of THAI Group which the three carriers belong, he added.

Subject to robust demand, Nok Air may step up the Bangkok-Mae Hong Son frequencies, now on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, on a daily basis, according to Mr. Piya.

The ATR72-500 turboprop was chosen for the flights because it can operate on the shorter runway at Mae Hong Son airport.

Mae Hong Son Governor Suebsak welcomed Nok Air’s decision to offer regular Bangkok-Mae Hong Son service for it would spur the province’s development, especially the tourism sector.

“It would help spreading out tourism to the wider area of Mae Hong Son, rather just the current hotspot at Pai,” he noted.

Last year, Mae Hong Son attracted 862,219 tourists with total spending of THB 4.17 billion.

Nok Air CEO, Mr. Piya estimated Nok Air could bring in at least 20,000 tourists directly by air to the province this year.

Access to Mae Hong Son by ground transport is a challenge, a mountain road that boasts 1,864 hairpin bends end-to-end.

Nok Air will cover the distance from the Thai capital and Mae Hong Son in one hour and 50 minutes.

  • Nok Air to cut and reschedule flights to solve flight delay

Nok Air to cut and reschedule flights to solve flight delay

Nok Air airliner has decided to reduce the number of its flights to avoid the problem of flight delay and, at the same time, has put on standby two planes to be brought in from U-tapao airport in case there is a problem of plane malfunctioning, said Nok Air CEO Piya Yodmanee.

Noting that turbulent weather is another reason for several flight delays, he made clear that Nok Air would not allow its planes to leave the airport in case of turbulent weather for safety sake.

Due to smoke problem from forest fires which usually takes place in the morning for flights in northern provinces, he said the airline would reschedule the morning flights for the routes to Tak, Lampang, Mae Hong Son and Loei to the afternoon.

However, during the Songkran festival, two more flights for the four routes will be added each day to cater to the increasing demand of travelers, said Mr Piya.

Starting May until September, Nok Air will reschedule the timetable of some flights during the dry season and to cut down five flights a day during the period.

Nok Air management on Friday (March 30) met with senior officials of the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand led by Mr Chula Sukmanop at the CAAT head office to discuss Nok Air’s frequent flight delays which have attracted a lot of criticisms from domestic travelers.

Mr Chula said flight delays were caused by a number of factors, including turbulent weather and congested air traffic.  He said Nok Air agreed to train a group of its staff who will deal with passengers in case of flight delays and to put on standby two planes which will be put into service in case of emergency.
