World-first Homme Plisse Issey Miyake flagship opens in Tokyo

The world’s first flagship store dedicated to the Homme Plisse Issey Miyake label has opened in the Tokyo suburb of Aoyama.

The 225sqm space was designed by Tokujin Yoshioka in a distinctly minimalist Japanese style heavily dominated by bare concrete.

Space at the rear of the shop houses a pleating machine, press and sewing machines, as found in the factory. Here, visitors can see the Japanese fashion label’s unique production method called seihin pleats (product pleats), in which pleats are made in fabric which is cut and sewn to 1.5 times the normal size.

Stock on display includes a limited-edition long-sleeve t-shirt range under the Colors label, sold in 10 shades. The clothes are made using the pleating machine located in the store and complement the full Homme Plisse collection.

The bold and bare concrete floors and pillars and exposed utilities in the space help create a factory feel and helps the brightly coloured apparel stand out. Stock is hung from steel racks and matching display counters.

“We hope that this shop not only delights customers but also brings a sense of the joys of the “monozukuri no gemba (workshop)” to the public for the first time,” said a Homme Plisse Issey Miyake spokesperson.

  • Lush Tokyo store marks beauty brand’s largest In South East Asia

Lush Tokyo store marks beauty brand’s largest In South East Asia

The new Lush Tokyo store opened on Saturday is its largest yet in Asia, a three-storey, 1240sqm flagship. Billed as “a global destination, with a curation of the best of Lush as you know it,” the Lush Shinjuku store is housed in the southeast wing of Shinjuku Station, the world’s busiest railway hub. From the outside, it is hard to miss: a towering four-storey 1024cm x 352cm LED screen dominates the street frontage (the building’s fourth floor will house back-office functions for now).

Inside, Lush Tokyo promises an “experiential, imaginative retail space showcasing Lush’s innovation in technology, with exclusive product drops, and new ways to shop”.

Digital screens feature throughout the retail space, as well as projection installations, positioned to communicate key messages through visual content and designed to overcome language barriers.

Coinciding with the store’s opening is the release of an upgraded Lush Labs app for Android and iOS featuring English, Korean, Japanese and Simplified Chinese. Visitors can use the app’s scan function to browse product information while in store, at home and even in the store’s digital ‘shoppable window’ which will be active 24 hours a day for customers and passers-by to scan and shop curated collections and product drops.

Lush says using lens technology, via the app, to demonstrate products and product information is a step towards minimising packaging and reducing water wastage by showcasing products through videos.

The content placed in windows and on the giant screen “will reflect the mood of Shinjuku at that time and aims to capture the attention of passers-by and commuters”. It will showcase Lush’s values, campaigns and creativity.

Lush says the ambience of the new store aims to change the customer’s mood, whether it is a skin consultation, spa treatment or something sensory to speed you up or slow you down.

“Products, treatments and experiences with benefits beyond the body exist here and build in intensity as customers move through the floors. Each floor offers an uplifting, interactive and playful space that promotes exploration and creativity with benefits beyond the body through different materials, lighting, products, content and merchandising to set the tone and spark joy.”

The second floor offers what Lush describes as “a surreal sensory experience using colour therapy and generative art inspired by bath art to create an interactive digital mood”.

“Innovative use of technology heightens the senses and plays with mood, data from sensors that map customer position and movement will be used to activate sounds from within the displays. This is just one way the shop can respond to individual customers, creating targeted experiences filled with surreal moments.”

The new Lush Tokyo store opened its doors on Saturday, June 1. A spa planned for the third floor will open within the next few months and the company says it is evaluating using some of the fourth-floor space for customer engagement as well.

  • Ex-Nissan Chief Ghosn Rearrested In Tokyo

Ex-Nissan Chief Ghosn Rearrested In Tokyo

Former Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn was rearrested early Thursday in Tokyo on fresh financial misconduct allegations, with the auto tycoon slamming his detention as “outrageous and arbitrary”.

Authorities arrested the 65-year-old less than a month after he was dramatically freed on bail following more than 100 days in detention. Local media said prosecutors had entered Ghosn’s temporary accommodation in central Tokyo early Thursday morning and that he left with them by car shortly afterwards.

An AFP reporter outside the home saw three men in dark suits guarding the entrance to the building’s car park and a police officer patrolling, as dozens of journalists gathered. Ghosn issued a statement through his representatives after the arrest calling it as “outrageous and arbitrary”.

“It is part of another attempt by some individuals at Nissan to silence me by misleading the prosecutors. Why arrest me except to try to break me? I will not be broken,” he said, insisting that he is innocent of the claims against him. Reports emerged Wednesday that prosecutors were weighing rearresting Ghosn as they investigate claims related to at least $32 million in Nissan funds transferred to a distributor in Oman.

According to a source familiar with the matter, some of this money is believed to have been used to buy a luxury boat for Ghosn and his family. The former high-flying executive already faces three charges of financial misconduct related to allegations he under-reported his compensation and sought to transfer losses to Nissan’s books.

He has denied any wrongdoing and took to Twitter for the first time Wednesday, using a newly created account that his spokespeople confirmed was authentic, to announce plans for a press conference.

“I’m getting ready to tell the truth about what’s happening. Press conference on Thursday, April 11,” said the tweet, sent in English and then Japanese.

    The ‘Razor’

Ghosn currently faces two separate charges of deferring his salary to the tune of nine billion yen ($81 million) and not revealing this in official documents to shareholders. The Brazil-born auto sector pioneer, widely credited with saving Nissan from the brink of bankruptcy, also faces a charge of seeking to shift personal investment losses onto Nissan’s books and then using company funds to pay a Saudi associate who stumped up collateral for him.

The case has been a rollercoaster ride of unexpected twists and turns from the moment Ghosn was first arrested at a Tokyo airport out of the blue on November 19.

He has since been re-arrested on multiple occasions over a series of allegations, employed a little-used article of Japanese law to force a day in court and emerged on bail dressed in a workman’s uniform and cap in a bizarre attempt to avoid the media.

Since his release on bail on March 6, he has kept scrupulously quiet despite daily attempts by local and international media to interview him. His lawyer Junichiro Hironaka, known as the “razor” for his mental sharpness, has done the talking for him, appearing twice in front of the foreign media to plead his client’s innocence.

In his latest appearance on Tuesday, Hironaka announced he had filed a petition with the Tokyo District Court so that Ghosn’s case would be heard separately from that of Nissan and his former right-hand man Greg Kelly. Nissan has been indicted alongside Ghosn, as they filed the shareholders’ documents that allegedly mis-stated the then chairman’s income.

Hironaka said this would not be a fair trial as Nissan has effectively sided with the prosecutors by providing them with documents they say show further malpractice.

    – ‘Trap’, ‘plot’ –

Under Ghosn’s management, Nissan recovered and formed a three-way alliance with Renault and Mitsubishi Motors that has become one of the world’s top-selling auto groups.

In an interview with AFP from his detention centre in January, Ghosn denounced a “trap” and a “plot” by Nissan prompted by opposition to his plans to bring the companies closer together.

He was removed as chairman by Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors almost immediately after his arrest. Renault was slower to react but Ghosn eventually himself resigned from the head of the French firm.

Ghosn’s arrest and a string of alleged financial misconduct has sparked questions over Nissan’s own corporate governance and the company established an independent body to propose changes to prevent a recurrence.

The advisory group suggested doing away with the vacant role of chairman and laid the blame for the lapse in governance at the feet of Ghosn.

The main cause of the misconduct was “the concentration of authority in Ghosn”, the group concluded.

“He created a situation in which it would be difficult to detect his pursuit of personal gain.”

  • Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Tokyo opens

Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Tokyo opens

Starbucks opens a four-story fully-immersive Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Tokyo today.

Located in the Nakameguro neighborhood, the new venue offers more than 100 unique coffee and tea beverages and merchandise exclusively available in store. It will be the fifth Roastery globally, home to the largest Teavana Bar in the world and Japan’s first Princi Italian bakery.

It also introduces Starbuck’s first Amu Inspiration Lounge, a full floor dedicated to community gathering – and is planned as Starbucks’ first Specialty Coffee Association certified training location in Japan in the near future.

“As the first international market outside of North America, Starbucks Japan has contributed 23 years of innovation for the company globally,” said Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson. “The opening of the Tokyo Roastery will further amplify what Starbucks Japan has done across all stores in the market for more than two decades – innovating and delivering the finest quality coffee one person, one cup and one neighbourhood at a time.”

“The Roastery will amplify and inspire coffee passion across all Starbucks stores, and will serve as a catalyst for a new wave of growth centered on the customer experience and passion for coffee and service,” added Starbucks Japan CEO Takafumi Minaguchi. “Beginning with the ‘Make it Yours’ campaign that will commence at every store in Japan upon the opening of the Roastery, customers will be invited to experience the first Starbucks coffee roasted exclusively in Tokyo, for Japan, and available in a variety of coffee beverage styles.

“The Roastery signifies our commitment to fostering moments of human connection over a cup of coffee and using these moments to create positive social impact in the communities we serve.”

The Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Tokyo  is the only one designed in collaboration with a local architect from the ground up. Inspired by the famous cherry-blossom trees lining the Meguro River, the building’s glass walls and terraced floors fold into the fabric of the neighbourhood, bringing visitors eye-level with the cherry blossoms and the four seasons of the river to reflect the natural beauty and sense of harmony found across Japan.

The coffee journey at the Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Tokyo is an immersive experience and education in coffee, and its process – from green bean to cup – which begins at the Main Bar on the first floor. The open floor plan draws customers into the immersive experience, introducing them to the art of roasting, brewing and hand-crafting beverages. The terraced third floor features Starbucks Japan’s first cocktail bar, Arriviamo.

Japan is the fourth largest market in terms of store count for Starbucks globally – behind the US and China – and today has more than 1400 Starbucks stores.

  • Starbucks Reserve® Roastery Tokyo opened door

Starbucks Reserve® Roastery Tokyo opened door

This week, Starbucks celebrates the opening of the Starbucks Reserve® Roastery Tokyo, a four-story tribute to premium coffee quality, innovation and human connection. This will be the fifthRoastery globally, opening to the public on Thursday, February 28, at 7 a.m. JST, reaffirming the company’s 23-year commitment to Japan. The Roastery pays tribute to the important role that Starbucks Japan has played in shaping the foundation of the Company’s international growth. The Roastery introduces customers to more than 100 unique coffee and tea beverages and merchandise, as well as a menu of artisanal Princi Italian fare for the first time in Japan.

It also celebrates the Japanese culture of connection and craftsmanship through the first AMU Inspiration Lounge –from the Japanese “amu,” meaning “knit together”–to host community gathering events and is planned to become Starbucks first Specialty Coffee Association certified training location in Japan.

“As the first international market outside of North America, Starbucks Japan has contributed 23 years of innovation for the company globally,” said Kevin Johnson, CEO, Starbucks Coffee Company.

“The opening of the Tokyo Roastery will further amplify what Starbucks Japan has done across all stores in the market for more than two decades—innovating and delivering the finest quality coffee one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time.” Takafumi Minaguchi, CEO, Starbucks Japan, added, “The Roastery will amplify and inspire coffee passion across all Starbucks stores, and will serve as a catalyst for a new wave of growth centered on the customer experience and passion for coffee and service. Beginning with the “Make it Yours” campaign that will commence at every store in Japan upon the opening of the Roastery, customers will be invited to experience the first Starbucks coffee roasted exclusively in Tokyo, for Japan, and available in a variety of coffee beverage styles.”

Collaborative Design Highlights Japan’s Natural Beauty

Located in Tokyo’s vibrant and creative neighborhood of Nakameguro, the Roastery’s enchanting design was inspired by the famous cherry blossom trees lining the Meguro River.

The building’s glass walls and terraced floors seamlessly fold into the fabric of the neighborhood, bringing visitors eye-level with the cherry blossoms and the four seasons of the river to reflect the natural beauty and sense of harmony found across Japan.

The Tokyo Roastery is the only Starbucks Roastery location designed in collaboration with a local architect from the ground up.

The exterior was brought to life in collaboration with renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. Envisioned by Liz Muller, Starbucks chief design officer and lead designer for all five Roasteries globally, the Roastery highlights the work of local craftsmen and women to create an enchanting destination for coffee exploration and discovery.

The Tokyo Roastery merges traditional and modern design to deliver a unique and inspired experience across all four floors. Upon entering the Roastery, customers are greeted by the world’s largest Starbucks Roastery coffee cask, four-stories and over 55 feet of blush-tinted copper adorned with hand-crafted copper cherry blossoms, which changes hues throughout the day in different lights.

The expansive cask was built using the technique of tsuchime, a tradition of copper beating, where each person involved in the building of the Roastery was offered the chance to hammer a portion to create its texture and pattern. The cask’s unique color is balanced against the light wood which has been carried into the interior to give the store a brightness found throughout traditional Japanese architecture.

Throughout the Roastery, local craftsmen and women were brought together to incorporate their expertise and traditional craft into the design elements.

The wood-tiled ceiling was inspired by the art of origami, providing a stunning visual experience. The light and airy space carries the light wood used on the exterior to the inside, giving the experience an enchanting aura.

The wood, sourced locally, has been treated throughout with a traditional technique which prevents it from aging, ensuring the brightness is maintained inside and outside in the years to come.

Enchanting Immersive Coffee, Tea and Mixology Experience

The coffee journey at the Reserve Roastery Tokyo is an immersive experience and education in coffee, and its process—from green bean to cup—which begins at the Main Bar on the first floor.

The open floor plan draws customers into the immersive experience, introducing them to the skilled art of roasting, brewing and hand-crafting beverages. The Reserve Roastery serves the freshest cup of coffee and it is here on the first floor that customers can taste Reserve coffee beverages such as Barrel-Aged Cold Brew.

The Princi bakery serves handcrafted, authentic artisanal Italian fare that is baked fresh in the Roastery throughout the day. For the first time in Japan, customers can enjoy freshly-baked breads, cornetti, focaccias, pizzas, salads and more.

An airy staircase leads to the second floor, where customers will be transported into the tradition of Japanese tea at the world’s largest Teavana Bar.

Exclusive tea beverages, such as the Pop’n Tea Sakura Jasmine, featuring a vibrant hibiscus and cherry popsicle atop a floral jasmine tea, will delight customers with their charming appearance, Japanese ingredients and unique flavor combinations, modernizing the tea experience. On the terraced third floor, Starbucks Japan’s first cocktail bar, Arriviamo™, puts innovation, mixology and cocktail craft on full display.

The two walls of spirits bring together the Arriviamo menu, featuring coffee and tea-inspired cocktails only available at the Tokyo Roastery, including the Nakameguro Espresso Martini made with chestnut liqueur, crème de cacao and espresso, then paired with decadent chocolate  from Nakameguro’s “green bean to bar CHOCOLATE” brand. Wine, beer and classic mixology beverages will also be available.

    Conversations with an Impact

Starbucks Japan has more than two decades contributing to the communities it serves.

The fourth floor of the Starbucks Reserve Roastery Tokyo is home to AMU Inspiration Lounge–a dedicated space for the community to gather for hosted social impact conversations. The concept of “AMU,” which means “to knit together” in Japanese, is founded on human connection and passions coming together, something Starbucks has long believed in. For the first time at any Starbucks location in the world, this intimate space will serve as a platform to host change-makers and creative thinkers from across Japan. The first event in April will celebrate the role of women leaders in Japan.

The Roastery is planned to become Starbucks first certified Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) location offering training for coffee professionals in the near future.“We believe that where passions connect, the future is sparked, and we will offer the Tokyo Roastery as a gathering space to spark new ideas and create an impact,” said Minaguchi.

“The Roastery signifies our commitment to fostering moments of human connection over a cup of coffee and using these moments to create positive social impact in the communities we serve.”

With more than 37,000 partners who proudly wear the green apron across Japan’s 47 prefectures and 250 at the Roastery itself, Starbucks Japan will amplify coffee craft and innovation by freshly roasting small-batch coffees from around the world every day in Tokyo and introducing new beverages, concepts and inspiration to all 1,400 stores across Japan. This amplification will begin with Tokyo Roast coffee, a Starbucks Japan-exclusive coffee, available throughout the market on opening day.
