Yeah1 suffers another year of loss

Media company Yeah1 reported a post-tax loss of VND151 billion ($6.55 million) last year, its second straight year of losses, as it developed a new business.

Amid the Covid-19 pandemic the company, one of the largest digital media ecosystems in Vietnam, decided to set up a new multi-channel trading platform, Giga1, which seeks to cut out intermediaries and deliver goods directly from manufacturers to customers.

“In 2020, we spent a lot of resources on this ecosystem of consumption and retail, which led to higher spending and affected the company’s profits,” Nguyen Dang Quynh Anh, deputy director of Yeah1, said.

Revenues fell by 16 percent last year to VND1.22 trillion. In March, its contract with YouTube was terminated due to a violation of policies.

It began as an operational error but later “turned into a real crisis for the company,” chairman Nguyen Anh Nhuong Tong said.

  • Sony launches Apple TV app on select smart TVs running Android TV

Sony launches Apple TV app on select smart TVs running Android TV

Apple launched a brand-new Apple TV app last year, which is now available in more than 100 countries. The app is available on the iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, select Samsung smart TVs, and, starting this week, select Sony smart TVs.

Sony announced that the Apple TV app will begin rolling out today in the United States on its X900H series via a software update. The good news is Sony plans to expand the availability of the Apple TV app to more smart TVs by the end of the year, including on select 2018 models and most 2019 and 2020 models.

In case you didn’t know, the app features Apple TV+, Apple’s new video subscription service that offers original shows, movies, and documentaries, including The Morning Show, See, Defending Jacob, Ted Lasso, Greyhound, Boys State, and Beastie Boys Story.

Furthermore, customers can use the Apple TV app to subscribe to Apple TV channels, such as SHOWTIME, CBS All Access, and Starz, as well as watch ad-free and on-demand, directly on the Apple TV app.

The Apple TV+ subscription on the Apple TV app on Sony’s smart TVs is available for $4.99 per month. However, for a limited time, those who purchase a new iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, iPod touch, or Mac are getting one year of Apple TV+ for free.

  • Apple TV+ free trials are being extended through February 2021

Apple TV+ free trials are being extended through February 2021

Buyers of the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV have been entitled to a free year of Apple TV+ since September 2019. The service itself launched in early November, so those trials are now weeks away from ending.

However, in an unexpected move, Apple has offered an extension to early adopters.

Apple has announced that it will be extending early Apple TV+ trials through February 2021. If the trial period starting between November 1, 2019 and January 31, 2020 customers will be receiving the extension.

Users of the service that were paid during those initial months, on the other hand, will be credited for the same amount. That credit is attached to each person’s Apple ID and can be used to pay for Apple services, in the App Stores, or in the iTunes Store.

Those of you planning to sign up to the Apple One services bundle later this year won’t have to worry either as the credit will still be issued. Again, it can be used to pay for Apple services or other items.

These account credits will be applied automatically, meaning customers won’t have to do anything. Apple should send out emails to eligible customers over the coming days notifying them of the change.

Unfortunately, anybody that signed up for Apple TV+ after February 2020 won’t be entitled to an extension of any kind.

  • Google launches Android 11 on Android TV

Google launches Android 11 on Android TV

Google is bringing Android 11 to Android TV devices, the search giant revealed today. Several performance enhancements and privacy improvements will be part of the new Android update, as well as a plethora of new features specifically designed for the TV.

Among these improvements, Google mentioned enhanced memory management, one-time permissions, and support for Auto Low Latency Mode and low latency media decoding. Since gaming has become such a major part of the entertainment industry, Google is introducing extended gamepad support for Android TV.

Also, silent boot mode for system updates, inactivity prompts, and OEM configurable wake keys are included in the upcoming Android 11 update for Android TV. All these and more should give users greater control over TV functions.

And for those interested, testing on Android TV will be much easier with Android 11 thanks to the addition of the so-called “test harness mode,” a feature for third-party app developers that want to automate a device for a fleet of devices.

According to Google, Android TV OEM partners should release and upgrade to Android 11 over the coming months, so the rollout hasn’t begun yet.

  • Disney+ hits a crucial figure four years ahead of expectations

Disney+ hits a crucial figure four years ahead of expectations

The Disney+ streaming service launched on November 12th and after just two weeks we called it “a real threat to Netflix.” While that was met by more than a few skeptics among our loyal readers saying that we jumped the gun, the streamer has gone from strength to strength. According to Today, the House of Mouse released its fiscal third-quarter earnings and announced that as of Monday, Disney+ had 60.5 million paid subscribers. The company’s goal of reaching 60 million to 90 million paid subscribers by 2024 was achieved four years earlier than expected thanks to the pandemic.

With many families locked inside because of the coronavirus outbreak, Disney+ provided entertainment featuring characters well-loved by parents and their children. And this afternoon, the entertainment firm announced that with movie theaters still closed, the live-action version of Mulan will launch exclusively on Disney+. The film will debut on the site beginning September 4th. However, it will still cost subscribers an additional $29.99 to watch the film on the platform.

And as if we needed another streaming service in the world, Disney also announced an upcoming new “general entertainment” streamer that will debut next year; it will use the Star brand that Disney acquired from Fox. The streaming content offered by this streamer will include titles from companies already owned by Disney such as ABC Studios, Fox Television, FX, Freeform, 20th Century Studios, and Searchlight. In many markets, the new service will be integrated with Disney+.

While the most up-to-date numbers show 60.5 million paid subscribers for Disney+, during the fiscal third quarter that figure was 57.5 million while Hulu had 35.5 subscribers. Add in the 8.5 million ESPN+ paid members during the same three months and overall Disney had over 100 million subscribers paying for its streaming services.

The real test for Disney will come on Disney+’s one-year anniversary. That’s because the initial batch of Verizon’s unlimited subscribers, who receive a free one-year Disney+ subscription, will have to decide whether or not they want to lay out their own money to continue receiving the service. Unlike most things, Disney, Disney+ is actually very reasonably priced at $6.99 per month or $69.99 for a year. Each account can include seven different user-profiles and four can stream on different screens simultaneously.

While it is obvious that Disney+ includes Disney’s classic animation like Cinderella, the Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast, it also includes Pixar classics like all of the Toy Story films. If you grew up on Disney Channel shows like That’s So Raven, Even Stevens, Hannah Montana, and Lizzie McGuire, they are all on the app as well. And some shows that were broadcast on network television while produced by Disney, such as the very underrated Boy Meets World, make great binge-watching fare. Star Wars fans can view every film from the series and relive the moments when you first met characters like Luke, Darth Vader, R2D2, and Jar Jar Binks. Other Star Wars related titles can be streamed include Disney+’s first breakout hit The Mandalorian which introduced us to the adorable Baby Yoda.

Marvel fans can turn to Disney+ to watch the Avengers, Iron Man, and Black Panther films. And adventure junkies will surely find content to watch under the National Geographic heading on the app. While the service might not cater to all tastes as Netflix does, you shouldn’t have a problem discovering something to stream on Disney+.

Discussing the results of its streaming services during the quarter, Disney CEO Bob Chapek said, “Despite the ongoing challenges of the pandemic, we’ve continued to build on the incredible success of Disney+ as we grow our global direct-to-consumer business. The global reach of our full portfolio of direct-to-consumer services now exceeds an astounding 100 million paid subscriptions — a significant milestone and a reaffirmation of our DTC strategy, which we view as key to the future growth of our company.”

If you have an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you can download Disney+ from the Apple App Store. Those with an Android device can do the same from the Google Play Store. And the app can be loaded on the web at www.disneyplus.com. But be careful. Watch Disney+ for too long and you might start feeling a little goofy.

  • YouTube TV outrageously raises monthly subscription prices

YouTube TV outrageously raises monthly subscription prices

It’s not the first time that Google decides to raise YouTube TV subscription prices whenever it felt that the portfolio was large enough to justify the price hikes. Unfortunately, this time it raised the monthly subscription costs by quite a lot and we’re quite sure that many customers will refuse to renew their subscriptions.

The search giant announced earlier this week that YouTube TV monthly fees will increase from $50 to $65, so customers would have to pay about 30% more. The new price takes effect on June 30 for new subscribers, while existing subscribers will see the changes reflected in their next billing cycle on or after July 30.

To justify the new price, Google reiterates that it added eight of ViacomCBS’s family channels – BET, CMT, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, TV Land and VH1, which will be available starting today. Six other channels will be added to YouTube TV at a later date, including BET Her, MTV2, MTV Classic, Nick Jr., Nick Toon, and TeenNick.

According to Google, the price increase was necessary because most networks require that YouTube TV include not just some of their channels, but all of them. Perhaps adding one or more flexible plans to its portfolio might allow customers to choose what they want to watch and how much they want to pay.

Customers who wish to pause or cancel their YouTube TV membership can do it anytime here. Otherwise, you’ll be forced to pay a lot more starting July 30.

  • HBO Now waves goodbye to older Apple TVs

HBO Now waves goodbye to older Apple TVs

The HBO Now app waves goodbye to 2nd- and 3rd-gen Apple TVs. The company has removed the app from the devices above after extending the deadline for two additional weeks. Initially, the deadline was set for the end of April, but after complaints from users, the date was pushed back to May 15.

Third-gen Apple TVs launched eight years ago, and HBO thinks it’s time for an upgrade. However, people don’t buy set boxes as frequently as other gadgets (mobile phones, for example), and many of them are still using these older Apple TV models. The timing is not perfect either – there are rumors of a tvOS hardware refresh later this year, so don’t rush to the stores yet.

HBO Go will have to go, too – it will be available for a couple more months and then follow HBO Now’s fate. The upcoming HBO Max streaming service will also be supported on the 4th-gen and later Apple TVs. All in all, everything points toward an upgrade, but if new hardware is in the pipeline, a little patience can be a wiser choice.

  • Apple releases a new TV ad for its latest iPhone

Apple releases a new TV ad for its latest iPhone

Apple U.K. has just shared the company’s new 30-second ad for the second-generation Apple iPhone SE which officially launches today, right in the middle of a global pandemic. The iPhone SE (2020) borrows the look and the design of the iPhone 8 including the 4.7-inch LCD display with a 750 x 1334 resolution. That works out to an old school 16:9 aspect ratio and there is no notch, no TrueDepth camera, and no Face ID. In fact, the iPhone SE (2020) is equipped with the Touch ID fingerprint scanner.

To power its new budget-priced phone, Apple is using the A13 Bionic chipset. Built using TSMC’s 7nm process node, the chip carries 8.5 billion transistors and is the same powerful component used to drive the entire iPhone 11 family. Apple also saw fit to give the phone’s memory a 50% bump from 2GB of RAM to 3GB, and also improved the single 12MP camera on the back with a new Image Signal Processor (ISP). Apple claims that the new ISP, together with the A13 Bionic, makes the rear camera the best single snapper setup on a smartphone. That’s a clear shot at the Google Pixel 3a series.

Available in White, Black, and (PRODUCT)RED, the iPhone SE (2020) is offered with 64GB, 128GB and 256GB of memory for $399 (24 monthly payments of $16.62), $449 (24 monthly payments of $18.70) and $549 (24 monthly payments of $22.87) respectively. As we mentioned, the device is available starting today.

The new 30-second ad, which you undoubtedly will see on television this weekend in the U.S. and U.K., is called “The Opening” and shows a man who has just received his iPhone SE and is ready to unbox it. On his knees in front of a table, he makes some room by pushing everything off the table. He dramatically opens the box and with sweaty hands (you can see him wipe them on his pants) he peels off the plastic protective film. You might remember that there was a time when enthusiasts could not get enough of the sound of the plastic film being peeled off a brand new phone. And as the film is removed, you can see that another change Apple made to the iPhone SE (2020) was to move the iconic Apple logo to the middle of the rear panel matching its location on the iPhone 11 series. And the ad concludes with Apple’s new tag line, “Lots to love. Less to spend.”

So now we await the unveiling of the 2020 iPhone 12 series which will be the company’s first to offer support for 5G connectivity. Most analysts are now going along with TF International’s Ming-Chi Kuo, who seems to have a direct link to the mind of Apple CEO Tim Cook. Kuo expects four new iPhone models to be delivered this fall including the 5.4-inch iPhone 12, the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Plus, the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro, and the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max. All four models will be powered by the more powerful and energy-efficient 5nm A14 Bionic chipset and all four will also support both sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G networks.

The new iPhone 12 handsets will borrow a design from the iPhone 5s as the rounded top is flattened out and a stainless steel strip surrounds the casing. The standard models will feature a dual-camera setup on the back (12MP Wide, 12MP Ultra-Wide) and we should see a quad-camera setup on the “Pro” models (12MP Wide, 12MP Ultra-Wide, 12MP Telephoto and a LiDar Time of Flight depth sensor). The iPhone 12 Pro Max could feature sensor-shift image stabilization instead of optical image stabilization (OIS) for “shake-free” videos. The new technology stabilizes the camera’s sensor while OIS stabilizes the camera’s lens.

Depending on the analyst, Apple will either have the iPhone 12 series ready on time, or they will delayed by four to eight weeks because of the pandemic.

  • Samsung’s new television ad promotes its 5G Galaxy phones

Samsung’s new television ad promotes its 5G Galaxy phones

By now, you would have to be Rip Van Winkling your way through life not to know that wireless operators worldwide are building out their 5G networks. Why is 5G so important? As the next generation of wireless connectivity, 5G offers download data speeds 10 times faster than 4G LTE. That will help with the creation of new industries and technologies, most of which haven’t even been thought of yet. Consider that the move from 3G to 4G LTE helped create the rideshare industry which has a pair of billion-dollar companies competing for business (Lyft and Uber). In other words, the countries that are first to embrace 5G will be the first to benefit from the coming 5G economic boom.
Now that’s not to say that individuals won’t see amazing changes as well. Videos that currently take minutes to download will take seconds to load on a 5G phone. In fact, that is one of the advantages of running a 5G Galaxy phone on a 5G network according to a new television commercial released Friday by Samsung. The timing of the spot coincides with the official release date of the company’s latest flagship series, the Galaxy S20. The new line is comprised of three models, the Samsung Galaxy S20, the Galaxy S20+, and the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G. All three phones are available with support for 5G.
Besides rapid downloads of streaming video content, Samsung points out that its Galaxy 5G phones will also be able to offer faster video gaming, enhanced video chats, and more immersive live events. In the commercial, Samsung shows a Galaxy 5G user sitting on a bus while at the same time she is able to experience a live concert through her phone (and view it from any seat in the house).
Right now, not everyone’s 5G experience is going to be the same; much depends on their wireless provider. T-Mobile was the first to launch nationwide 5G service in the states thanks to the use of its low-band 600MHz spectrum. These airwaves have the advantage of traveling farther than high-band signals which is why T-Mobile already covers 200 million Americans with 5G. And while these low-band airwaves penetrate structures better than high-band signals do, they cannot offer the blazing-fast download speeds that high-band mmWave spectrum delivers. In addition, mmWave signals can carry more traffic and provide lower latency. That means that the time it takes to send data from one device to another is shorter. Low latency is one of the features of 5G that could lead to driverless vehicles.
Verizon is advertising that its 5G network is “Built Right.” The nation’s largest carrier is talking about the use of mmWave spectrum to build its 5G network. While this will require Verizon to spend more time to complete the network, when it is finished it will deliver faster download data speeds than the competition. Last month, Open Signal released the results of its real-world tests and Verizon’s 5G network, using mmWave spectrum, had the fastest average download data speed in the states at 722.9Mbps. T-Mobile’s 600MHz 5G network had an average download speed of 47.5Mbps. Sprint’s 2.5GHz mid-band 5G signal (which will soon belong to T-Mobile) averaged 183Mbps down and AT&T’s consumer 5G service, using its 850MHz spectrum, recorded an average download data speed of 59.3Mbps.
There is a long way to go before the next generation of wireless connectivity starts to reach its potential. But 5G is available now and with the Galaxy S20 series officially released, you can now own a phone that supports both mmWave 5G signals and signals produced by sub-6GHz networks. The question is whether you want to spend big bucks now for technology that is clearly in its infancy. Samsung is hoping that this commercial will motivate you to make the switch to 5G now.
  • Netflix finally lets users turn off one of its most annoying features

Netflix finally lets users turn off one of its most annoying features

Everyone was complaining about Netflix’s autoplay previews, but it took the streaming service quite a long time to do something about it. Although the feature is still active in all Netflix’s apps, we’ve been given the option to completely turn them off.

It’s been years since we’ve asked for such an option, but for some reason, Netflix didn’t think it should prioritize the removal of autoplay previews. Ironically, in an announcement, Netflix says: “We’ve heard the feedback loud and clear – members can now control whether or not they see autoplay previews on Netflix.”

We think it’s great that Netflix listens to users’ feedback, but we also believe that it only responds to those requests that fit its marketing strategy. In any case, if you want to turn off Netflix’s most annoying feature, here is what you have to do:

    1. Sign in to Netflix from a web browser
    2. Select Manage Profiles from the menu
    3. Select the profile you’d like to update

From there, you can check or uncheck the option to autoplay previews while browsing on all devices, including Android and iOS. Keep in mind that the changes might not show up immediately, but one thing you can do to benefit from the new feature is to switch to another profile, and then switch back to reload your profile with the updated setting.

  • LG TV lets you shop fashion you see in TV shows

LG TV lets you shop fashion you see in TV shows

Video commerce firm TheTake has partnered with smart TV manufacturer LG Electronics and a range of media companies to allow viewers to “shop shows” for fashion, accessories, homeware, tech devices and even menu and recipe items.

Beginning this spring, owners of LG’s webOS Smart TVs will be able to purchase hundreds of different products identified and tagged by TheTake’s proprietary technology, which has scanned and identified hundreds of items per television episode and film.

“Shoppable video has been talked about since the days of Rachel’s sweater on ‘Friends’,” said TheTake co-founder and CEO Tyler Cooper. “Previous solutions haven’t addressed the long-tail opportunity where each individual viewer wants to shop for something different. Shoppable video isn’t just about Rachel’s sweater, but also Chandler’s jacket, Joey’s sunglasses, Monica’s couch and so on. To address the full breadth of consumer interest, we leverage machine learning to make more than 500 products shoppable in a given episode of television. We’re excited to bring our AI-powered solution to viewers with LG and our various content partners.”

With a record amount of TV content produced last year, TheTake’s machine-learning algorithms enable product identification and tagging at scale. TheTake’s technology can currently identify several hundred million products from thousands of retail partners when and where they appear in various TV episodes and movies.

“The ability to seamlessly shop for the items we see in our favorite shows and movies is something we’ve long wanted to bring to LG smart TV users,” said LG Electronics US head of home entertainment brand marketing Michelle Fernandez. “Now, in partnership with TheTake, we’re introducing the feature on LG’s 2020 smart TVs for the easiest and most consumer-friendly experience for shopping the looks from TV and movies.”

TheTake’s AI feature will be available on all 2020 LG OLED, LG NanoCell and UHD smart TV models installed with the webOS smart TV platform. TheTake has negotiated an agreement with a large US MVPD to roll out the technology across millions of set-top boxes later this year. And TheTake has also partnered with WarnerMedia, A+E Networks, Crown Media Family Networks, NBC Universal and others to roll out the technology over their various channels throughout the year.

  • Hulu launches new rewards system for select viewers

Hulu launches new rewards system for select viewers

After increasing the prices of its streaming services, Hulu announced a new rewards system for those who love to binge. A new ad system is now available for Hulu viewers who like to watch TV shows back-to-back, the company announced.

The new ad experience has been specially designed for binge-watchers, so here is how it will work. If you plan to watch an entire season of your favorite show in one sitting or at least several episodes, you will certainly qualify for Hulu’s new rewards system.

Let’s say you’re watching a show and you reach the third episode, then you’ll be able to choose a reward from Hulu, as the streaming service will let you choose from either an ad-free episode or a unique offer from its brand partners.

Speaking of brand partners, Hulu announced that for the time being, it will give binge-watchers offers from the following brands: Kellog’s, Maker’s Mark and Georgia-Pacific. Of course, Hulu may add more brands in the future, but for now, you’re limited to these three. Or, you can always choose the ad-free episode and don’t bother with any special offers from these advertisers.
