  • Netflix brings its thin mobile games library to all Android users

Netflix brings its thin mobile games library to all Android users

Netflix is pretty serious about games and while the company doesn’t have a pedigree when it comes to this part of the entertainment industry, it needs to start somewhere if it wants a seat at the big revenue earners’ table.

After testing its games service in selected regions, Netflix announced today that its entire catalog of games is now available for all Android users who pay for a Netflix subscription. Although the library is quite thin, we’re promised more titles in the future.

Starting today, Netflix subscribers can play five mobile games: Stranger Things: 1984, Stranger Things 3: The Game, Shooting Hoops, Card Blast, and Teeter Up. It’s important to mention that these games don’t feature any ads, additional fees and in-app purchases, so all you need is a Netflix subscription.

Netflix subscribers will see a dedicated games row and games tab on their Android devices where they can select any game to download. These games can be played on multiple devices on the same account. Keep in mind that some games may require an internet connection, but there are some that you can play offline.

  • Google winding down traditional Fiber TV

Google winding down traditional Fiber TV

Google is trying to be as cost-efficient as possible, especially when it comes to network infrastructure. Early this week, the Mountain View company revealed plans to completely retire its traditional Fiber TV, upgrading customers to streaming options.

The announcement doesn’t really come as a surprise for some, as Google has started to upgrade its Fiber TV customers to its new TV experience since June. If you’re eligible for an upgrade, you can now get your Chromecast with Google TV and upgraded home Wi-Fi with Google Wifi through your Google Fiber account in just a few clicks.

Although Google will gradually retire traditional Fiber TV in all markets, those still using the traditional service will get a 90-day notice before their plan will change. Google claims that it has completely upgraded Fiber TV customers in Nashville, Huntsville, Salt Lake City, and Provo, while Raleigh-Durham, Charlotte, and Irvine will finish their transitions by the end of this month.

Austin and Atlanta will be the next markets to embrace Google’s upgraded Fiber TV at the end of November. Kansas City will follow, but there’s no timeline for this specific market yet.

  • Disney raises prices at Hulu effective October 8

Disney raises prices at Hulu effective October 8

Hulu was one of the few streaming services that didn’t increase prices this year. Unfortunately, that’s about to change as Disney has just confirmed that Hulu price tiers will be increased effective October 8.

The price of Hulu’s live TV service plans will increase by $1 starting October 8. Taking into consideration the new price hike, Hulu’s ad-supported tier will cost $6.99 per month, while the ad-free tier will be going up to $12.99 monthly.

The Hulu price hike follows the other increases in recent months at ESPN+ and Disney+. The report mentions that the reason for the price increase could be the addition of thousands of Bollywood titles and Hotstar originals to the streaming service.

Also, the new price for Hulu’s tiers might make the Disney Bundle more appealing for those who wish to save some bucks (36% to be more precise). Hulu confirmed that the price of the Disney Bundle will not change due to the price increase. It’s also important to mention that the price hike won’t affect Hulu + Live TV plans.

  • Amazon launches IMDb TV standalone mobile app for its free streaming service

Amazon launches IMDb TV standalone mobile app for its free streaming service

Amazon’s IMDb TV free streaming service has been running on various platforms for a few years now. Unfortunately, Android and iOS users could only access the service through the general IMDb app, at least on mobile.

Earlier this week, Amazon announced that an IMDb TV standalone app is now available for Android and iOS devices in the United States. The new ecosystems add to an already large list of devices that support IMDb TV: Android TV, Chromecast with Google TV, LG Smart TVs, Roku, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Fire TV users are still getting Amazon’s IMDb TV streaming service via the free channel within the Prime Video app included on all Fire TV devices. Those who wish to try it out can download the IMDb TV app for Android and iOS through Google Play Store or App Store.

Amazon IMDb TV offers a generous library of movies and TV shows, including iconic titles like All in the Family, Mad Men, Malcom in the Middle, Chicago Fire, and How to Train Your Dragon. It also streams originals from Amazon Studios like Leverage: Redemption, Alex Rider, and the upcoming Luke Bryan: My Dirt Road.

Not to mention that after the deal between IMDb TV and Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, the free streaming service will get TV-window rights to Universal movies. Although it’s completely free IMDb TV runs ads during shows, but Amazon claims that its service has half the ads of traditional TV.

  • Hulu Plus Live TV adds NFL Network at no extra cost, new sports package available

Hulu Plus Live TV adds NFL Network at no extra cost, new sports package available

Hulu is one of the few streaming services that didn’t increase its prices very often. On the contrary, the service added more than a dozen new channels at the beginning of the year at no extra cost. Today, Hulu Plus Live TV is adding another new channel for which customers won’t have to pay extra since it’s part of the basic $65 monthly subscription: NFL Network.

But that’s not the only new sports channel offered by the streaming service. Hulu promised back in April that it will add NFL RedZone to its offering by early August and that customers will have to pay a fee to watch it.

Today, Hulu announced that the NFL RedZone is available as part of the new sports add-on, which costs $10 per month. Aside from NFL RedZone, the new sports package includes channels like MAVTV Motorsports Network, Outdoor Channel, Sportsman Channel, TVG, and TVG 2.

NFL Network is available to all Hulu’s Live TV subscribers starting today, while the new sports add-on will also launch today.

  • Google TV Android app update adds support for more streaming services

Google TV Android app update adds support for more streaming services

Great news for Google TV app users, as a new update is now making its way to Android devices in the coming days. Google has just announced that the TV Android app in the US is going to receive a new update this week and brings changes to the interface, better recommendations, and more ways to watch.

The most important change included in the update is the addition of a new 16:9 widescreen movie and show posters. Also, Rotten Tomatoes scores have been added under each poster. Users will now be able to mark shows they have already seen by tapping the “watched” icon to get updated recommendations in their “For you” tab in their place.

The update also introduces more rows of personalized recommendations that will allow Google TV users to browse for their next movie or show. Google also revealed that it made improvements to the app’s recommendation system to make it easier to find something that fits a user’s interests.

Last but not least, the Google TV app now features support for even more streaming services, including Discovery+, Viki, PBS kids, and Boomerang. Also, support for on-demand content from live TV like YouTube TV, Philo, and fuboTV is available too.

Keep in mind that the update will not remove the Watchlist feature, and all previously purchased movies and shows will still show up in your Library tab.

  • Google introduces new 4K Plus add-on on YouTube TV

Google introduces new 4K Plus add-on on YouTube TV

If you think YouTube TV’s price has gone haywire, you’re not wrong. Currently, the price for a YouTube TV subscription is $65 per month, although the service started at a $35 tier several years ago.

Apart from the price customers must pay to get access to their favorite channels, Google added all sorts of perks that aren’t included in the base package. The most recent one is the 4K Plus add-on that does exactly that: it lets you watch 4K content.

However, you’ll only be able to watch “select live and on-demand content” in 4K from several channels like Discovery, ESPN, FOX Sports, FX, Nat Geo, NBC Sports, and Tastemade. Not to mention that in order for this to work, you’ll need an additional gadget like a compatible 4K enabled TV and/or streaming device.

Besides being able to watch 4K content, the new add-on will let you download shows to watch offline. Also, you’ll get unlimited streams at home, whereas until now you would be limited to just three streams.

Obviously, the new add-on isn’t free, so if you want to watch 4K content, you’ll have to come up with $19.99 per month. The good news is the first month is available for free if you sign up now, and then a price of $10 per month for one year. This is only available for customers in the US who have an active YouTube TV subscription and subscribe to the 4K Plus add-on for the first time.

  • Apple TV app fully entering the world of Android TV

Apple TV app fully entering the world of Android TV

Once in a blue moon, something beautiful happens when it comes to the relationship between Apple and Google, and in this case, that is the complete introduction of the Apple TV app to all modern devices with Android TV.

The search engine giant said that starting today, the Apple TV app will be available throughout the “Android TV OS ecosystem,” which means that the streaming service is no longer limited to just Sony Bravia TVs and Chromecast with Google TV but is now released to other media and streaming devices manufactured by companies like Xiaomi, OnePlus, Nvidia, and more.

The news of Apple lowering its ecosystem garden walls broke when Nvidia shared that the Apple TV app will be coming to their Shield TV streaming box at the Computex virtual conference this week. Later on, a tweet from a Xiaomi executive further cemented the news by confirming that the app is coming on all of their Android TV products.

Apple extends an extra pair of hands for those who own one or more of their devices in the form of a one-year subscription to the Apple TV+ streaming service. A very welcome gesture that will without a doubt attract even more people to their already popular streaming service, especially considering the generous periodic extensions of this offer that they’ve showcased up until now.

In a very Apple fashion, they also make it easier for you to set up and sign in through your device by offering the option to do it via scanning a QR code that shows up in the app with your iPhone or iPad.

All’s to say, it seems that Apple is starting to loosen up its historical tight grip on its ecosystem, resulting in a wider audience reach for them and more flexibility for us in our choice and preference, which I will welcome any day.

  • Vingroup shuts down smartphone, TV manufacturing

Vingroup shuts down smartphone, TV manufacturing

Vietnam’s biggest private conglomerate, Vingroup, will stop manufacturing smartphones and televisions, focusing instead on producing equipment for VinFast cars.

Its VinSmart unit, established nearly three years ago, will start making “infotainment” features for VinFast cars to make them more competitive in the global market, Vingroup said in a statement Sunday.

VinSmart will also research, design, and manufacture electric engines, electronic parts and batteries for electric vehicles to increase the localization ratio of its products.

The unit will also push research on devices for smart cities and smart homes.

“The production of smartphones or smart TVs no longer brings breakthroughs and creates unique values for users,” said Nguyen Viet Quang, vice president and CEO of Vingroup.

But developing smart cars, smart homes and smart cities will bring many “outstanding” benefits to humanity, therefore, the company wants to devote all its resources towards doing this, he added.

VinSmart will continue to produce TVs and smartphones to complete the products’ lifecycle.

Later, a part of VinSmart facility will be used to manufacture products for partners and the remaining part will be expanded to make its own new products.

Since its establishment in June 2018, VinSmart has introduced 19 smartphone models and five TV models to the market.

  • Panasonic stops producing TVs in Vietnam

Panasonic stops producing TVs in Vietnam

Japanese electronics giant Panasonic will end TV production in Vietnam and India by the end of fiscal 2021.

Panasonic decided to negotiate with Chinese rival TCL, the world’s third-largest TV maker, to handle its outsource production, after considering many major manufacturers.

It said the development of low-end TVs, which have low margins, will be outsourced to cut costs.

The company has followed other leading Japanese brands in scaling down TV production – an area formerly a major competitive advantage for the country’s electronics industry. Panasonic will continue to produce its own high-end TVs, mainly for sale in Japan. However, the company will also consider consolidating or shrinking production locations at home and abroad.

“Panasonic’s TV business has been struggling due to fierce competition from Chinese and South Korean rivals.”

Panasonic used to hold 10 percent of the global TV market share but gradually lost its appeal when low-cost competitors from China appeared. Previously, Panasonic withdrew from the plasma TV segment and discontinued production in the U.S. and China.

According to British research firm Omdia, by 2020, Panasonic ranked 12th worldwide in TV shipments with a 1.8 percent market share.

Sales and production of TVs account for less than 10 percent of Panasonic’s total revenue. This segment was profitable in the fiscal year ending March 2021 thanks to strong development of the domestic market.

However, the company soon found the opportunity to earn long-term profits from TVs is no longer stable. They were forced to restructure their businesses, similar to many other Japanese brands.

Previously, in 2012, Japanese electronics firm Hitachi terminated its domestic TV production and sold its entire brand in 2018. That same year, Japan’s electronics maker Toshiba also sold all of its TV assets to China’s electronics maker Hisense Group. Meanwhile, Sony has restructured its business model by reducing sales channels and some inefficient product lines.

Panasonic annually sells about six million TVs worldwide.

In Vietnam, Panasonic has eight companies, including Panasonic System Networks Vietnam in Hanoi which specializes in products for the export market like phones, projectors, and others, and refrigerator and washing machine factories, an R&D center scattered across different locations, from Hanoi to central Da Nang and southern Ho Chi Minh, Can Tho cities.

  • Hulu app finally adds support for higher resolutions on Android TV

Hulu app finally adds support for higher resolutions on Android TV

It’s hard to understand why Hulu has been limiting streaming resolutions to 720p on Android TV until now, but just about every other streaming service offers at least support for 1080p. Not to mention that most of its competitors in the US have already upgraded their streaming services to 4K resolution at no additional costs.

Thankfully, Hulu has decided that it finally time to upgrade its streaming service and offer customers at least the same level of quality the competition currently offers. The Hulu app for Android TV now features two additional streaming options: 1080p and 4K.

Keep in mind though that to benefit from these improvements, your Android TV device must support these resolutions. There’s no official word on the changes, but many Reddit users that own Android TV devices like the 2019 Shield TV noticed Hulu can now stream at 1080p resolution.

At least one 2017 Sony Bravia TV user confirmed the Hulu app now supports 4K streaming. It looks like these improvements are slowly rolling out to Hulu customers across the US, so we’re not sure when exactly they’ll be available to everyone.

  • HBO Max to offer at least 6,000 hours of described content by March 2023

HBO Max to offer at least 6,000 hours of described content by March 2023

HBO Max has big plans for 2021, as the streaming giant is ready to implement lots of major enhancements to its service. One of the first important changes coming to HBO Max this week is aimed at visually impaired users.

Starting this week, HBO Max will roll out newly 1,500 hours of audio described content on the web and mobile platforms including select HBO originals, Max Originals, Warner Bros movies, and some acquired content, WarnerMedia announced earlier today.

The new feature will run as a separate audio track that offers a verbal description of visual elements on the screen. Apart from that, HBO Max will include a new Audio Description category in the navigation menu.

HBO Max also announced that other improvements to the accessibility will be added this week to the Android and iOS apps for visually impaired users that take advantage of the screen reader software to browse the service’s digital content.

Finally, HBO Max revealed that it will make audio descriptions available across all supported Internet-connected TVs later this year. Also, by March 2022, HBO Max users should expect to get 3,000 hours of described content and at least 6,000 hours by the end of March 2023.

  • Disney+ is raising its US prices today

Disney+ is raising its US prices today

Disney+, which as of this month has 100 million subscribers, is nothing short of a global phenomenon thanks to its huge catalog of Disney, Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars, and National Geographic content.

That catalog keeps growing in size, though, so Disney+ has decided that now’s the right time to raise its prices in the United States, after already increasing them in Europe last month.

Starting this Friday, March 26, the monthly cost of Disney+ is going up by $1 to $7.99 per month. The Disney subscription service is also raising the price of its yearly subscription plan, from $69.99 to $79.99.

Disney offers a bundle subscription package that includes Hulu and ESPN+, in addition to Disney+. The ad-supported tier will go from $12.99 to $13.99 a month on Friday, while the ad-free version is going from $18.99 to $19.99 per month.

The good news is that you still have time to get Disney+ at its original price. Today is your last chance to sign up to Disney+ for $6.99 per month or $69.99 a year. The same can be said for the Hulu & ESPN+ bundle.

As a reminder, here are some of the popular movies and TV shows Disney+ offers:

    • The Mandalorian
    • Falcon and the Winter Soldier
    • WandaVision
    • Mulan
    • Soul
    • Incredibles 2
    • Avengers: Endgame
    • Marvel Studios: Legends
  • YouTube TV might soon allow users to download shows for offline watching

YouTube TV might soon allow users to download shows for offline watching

Most streaming services allow their users to download content for offline watching, which is especially helpful while on the go. Spotify and HBO both offer this option to their customers, but not YouTube TV, at least not for the moment.

The good news is Google plans to add this nifty feature to the Android app. Apparently, there are strings in the app’s code that refer to this particular feature that’s not yet available. Also, the latest YouTube TV update on Android devices introduces a new alert, which notifies the users about incomplete downloads.

The strings in the code clearly mention the ability to download shows for offline watching, which will be available in the “downloads” tab of the app. They also refer to a “Download” button that’s not yet available in the YouTube TV app.

Although the feature was only discovered in the Android app, we expect Google to make it available to YouTube TV users on iOS as well probably at the same time. So, if you’ve been waiting for such a feature know that it will be coming, and very soon apparently.

The money will be used to expand the factory starting in March. Manufacturing will begin in May.

It will create 5,000 new jobs, and contribute around $5 million annually to the government’s coffers.

LG Display first invested in Hai Phong in April 2016, and currently employs over 13,900 people.
