The Roku Channel adds 50 free Live TV channels

The Roku Channel is adding new content all the time, which is probably one of the reasons it’s one of the most popular providers of live TV channels. Today, the service announced that no less than 50 Live TV channels will be available for free via The Roku Channel.

The new Live TV channels will be available as part of a new category of entertainment called Espacio Latino, a brand-new Spanish language hub in the United States, which offers thousands of hours of content to Spanish-speaking audiences in one easy location.

Apart from sports, news entertainment, telenovelas, movies, and music, Espacio Latino will also feature thousands of free, original, and exclusive movies and TV shows in Spanish, plus popular English titles dubbed and subtitled.

Out of the 50 Spanish language Live TV channels available through Espacio Latino, over 25 are brand-new to The Roku Channel. Keep in mind that all channels will be accessible via Espacio Latino and The Roku Channel’s Live TV Guide. Also, content from Premium Subscriptions will be available for streamers to enjoy in the category.

New Google TV app now available for iPhone and iPad users

Google has just announced that one of its apps that was initially only available for Android users is finally coming to iOS. The Google TV app allows users discover what to watch with recommendations from across all apps installed, thus making it easy to start watching movies and shows.

  • YouTube TV is getting the long overdue account switcher feature

YouTube TV is getting the long overdue account switcher feature

YouTube TV made headlines quite a few times this month thanks to the many changes the service has been going through lately. After adding several new channels to its offering, including The Weather Channel, and introducing picture-in-picture (PiP) for iOS devices, YouTube TV is now getting a long-overdue feature aimed at users who share their subscriptions with other people from their household.

One of the best streaming services in the United States, even better than traditional live TV for many, YouTube TV will finally allow subscribers who use multiple accounts on their TV to switch between them on the fly. The new feature will be rolling out to accounts in waves, YouTube TV confirmed after revealing the news.

YouTube TV subscribers can add as many new accounts as they want to make family sharing that much easier. The newly added feature will only hep YouTube users on non-Android/Google TV device since the original app already has a switcher that does the same thing.

The streaming service that offers live TV, on demand video and cloud-based DVR from more than 85 television networks, YouTube TV is available in the United States for $65. Created as an alternative to traditional live TV services, YouTube TV looks even more appealing in a world where smart TVs have become the norm.

  • Android TV 13 might reduce power consumption for smart TVs

Android TV 13 might reduce power consumption for smart TVs

With Android 13 on the way, we’re expecting many important new features to arrive on all devices that are part of the ecosystem, not just smartphones and tablets. Cars and TVs that use Google’s OS are likely to receive their fair share of improvements too, including some that might reduce consumption.

Obviously, your car won’t consume less fuel or electricity for using Android Auto, but your smart TV might, at least according to a new report by Esper’s Mishaal Rahman. Apparently, Android TV 13 will include a new “low power standby” mode that will prevent some functions to keep running in the background when your smart TV is in standby mode.

While the low power standby mode is enabled, wakelocks are disabled and network access is blocked. The feature will be disabled by default just in case you want to continue to receive notifications while your smart TV is in standby mode.

In the same piece of news, the cited report highlights another interesting improvement that Android TV 13 is expected to bring to smart TVs: expanded Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode. With Android 13 TV, PiP windows can be set to less than 1:2.39 or bigger than 2.39:1. Also, despite the fact that Android TV does not support multi-window features except from PiP, Android TV 13 might actually add a “pseudo-split-screen” mode with docked, expanded PiP windows.

  • Netflix adds a ‘Double Thumbs Up’ button to further improve its recommendations

Netflix adds a ‘Double Thumbs Up’ button to further improve its recommendations

In an attempt to better attune its recommendations to its users, Netflix introduced a third button to its rating system. Yes, from now on, Netflix will have not two, but three reaction buttons: a thumbs up, a thumbs down, and a double thumbs up button.

According to Netflix, the thumbs-up button shows Netflix’s algorithms what movies and TV shows you like, but the double thumbs-up button shows which movies and TV shows you love. Based on which movies and shows received your double thumbs-up reaction, Netflix’s algorithms will better recommend similar movies and shows that “what you enjoy.”

As Netflix explained, if you reacted with a double thumbs up to the TV show Bridgerton, the platform may even recommend you more movies or series starring some of the show’s cast or other movies and shows from the same production company, which in this case is Shondaland.

Netflix’s double thumbs-up button is located next to the thumbs-up and thumbs-down buttons. You can see and use it now on the TV, web, and mobile versions of the service. And as Netflix said, “Don’t be shy. Express yourself and tell us what you’re loving on Netflix. You know you want to.”

  • Apple TV+, Netflix drop out of bidding for rights to Will Smith’s biopic following “the slap”

Apple TV+, Netflix drop out of bidding for rights to Will Smith’s biopic following “the slap”

One of the most bankable and likable stars in Hollywood has seen his reputation shattered in the time it took Will Smith to rise out of his seat at the Academy Awards and slap Chris Rock in the face. Everyone knows the story now and since film and television aren’t part of our beat, there is no sense in taking a deep dive and analyzing the whole affair. However, Apple is on our beat and there is part of this story that has an impact on the tech titan.

Apple TV+ and six other companies including Netflix have been bidding for the rights to a film version of Smith’s biography; the best-seller was published in 2021. A source said “Apple TV+ and Netflix have pulled out of the bidding for the project and are now planning to use the funds to develop original ideas pitched by new black actors. The source added that “Working with Will has become a risky business. They (including Apple) now plan on developing ideas with more family-friendly stars like Mike Epps and Michael B. Jordan.”

Think about how strange this all sounds. We should point out that Smith was scheduled to star in a new original film for Apple TV+ called “Emancipation.” Production had been halted on the set because of Covid and it isn’t clear what the film’s status is at this time.

After the slap, the awards show continued and Smith won the Best Actor Oscar for his part in “King Richard,” a film about Richard Williams, the father of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams. In winning that award, he beat out Denzel Washington who was nominated for starring as Macbeth in the Apple TV+ movie “The Tragedy of Macbeth.”

The slap heard around the world is going to hurt Will Smith as companies like Apple drop him like a bad habit. Apple has enough bad press thanks to its App Store policies without having to carry Smith’s baggage too.

Eventually, the American people will forget, and Smith’s name will grace the “A” list once again. But right now, you can’t blame Apple for taking a hard pass on streaming a Will Smith Biopic. Speaking of streaming, Apple did become part of motion picture history on Oscar night as Apple TV+ became the first streaming service to take home a Best Picture Oscar as CODA took the victory in that category.

Winning “Best Picture” has helped Apple TV+ subscriptions soar 25% in the aftermath of the televised awards show. At the same time, the number of Apple TV+ subscribers viewing CODA soared 300% week-over-week. The film was also the first with a mostly all-deaf cast to pick up the hardware for “Best Picture” at the event. Apple has never released subscription numbers for Apple TV+, but by one estimate it is believed to have 40 million accounts with 20 million paying customers.

Apple secured the rights to the movie by paying a Sundance Film Festival record of $25 million. While it would seem that Apple made a smart investment in purchasing the movie rights, it isn’t clear whether many new subscribers were taking advantage of the seven-day free trial of the service that Apple offers just so they could view CODA and see what all of the excitement was about.

Apple also gives away three free months of Apple TV+ to consumers who purchase an iPhone or other Apple products. Apple will have to see whether these subscribers stick around before it can make a final statement about its investment in CODA. With the huge jump in subscriptions thanks to CODA’s Best Picture victory, it does seem that the world famous “slap” didn’t completely grab all of the attention away from the actual winners during the 94th Academy Awards.”

  • YouTube TV brings picture-in-picture (PiP) feature to devices running iOS 15+

YouTube TV brings picture-in-picture (PiP) feature to devices running iOS 15+

YouTube confirmed back in February that it will bring picture-in-picture to YouTube TV on iOS devices. At that time, YouTube’s officials didn’t provide an ETA nor any details about what devices will be available with PiP.

One month after the initial announcement, YouTube TV confirmed that picture-in-picture is now rolling out to iOS 15+ devices. As to why this feature is only available on iOS 15+ devices, your guess is just as good as ours, but since Apple typically keeps all its iPhones and iPads up to date, it’s only the older devices (older than iPhone 6s) that won’t have access to this specific feature.

Picture-in-picture works with both on demand and live TV content, so you won’t have to worry about that. To use it, simply select a video that you wish to watch and swipe up from the bottom of the screen to return to the device’s homepage. As soon as you do that, the video will scale down and move across the screen.

It’s unclear if the feature is available right now to everyone or YouTube TV has decided to go for a staged rollout. Either way, iOS users should start seeing picture-in-picture on their phones and tablets very soon.

  • Apple brings its streaming service to Comcast devices in the US

Apple brings its streaming service to Comcast devices in the US

The partnership between Apple and Comcast enters a new era, as the Cupertino-based giant is bringing its streaming service to Comcast’s customers. In a joint statement earlier this week, the companies revealed that Apple TV+ will be available Comcast’s various platforms in the US.

Starting this week, Apple TV+ will be available on Xfinity X1, Xfinity Flex, and XClass TV, but all eligible devices will be getting the streaming service in the coming days. The move follows Apple TV+’s launch on Sky devices like Sky Q and Sky Glass in the UK and Europe back in December.

Furthermore, Comcast announced that between March 15 and March 21, its customers will benefit from a special offer, as Apple will provide Xfinity users with a preview of some of its most popular Apple TV+ original series and films across X1, Flex and Stream, no sign-up or sign-in required.

Additionally, Xfinity customers will be able to watch the first seasons of many of Apple TV+’s popular shows, as well as the Apple Original film “Greyhound.”

It’s worth noting that Xfinity customers who aren’t Apple TV+ subscribers are eligible for a three-month free trial of Apple TV+ when they sign-up via their Xfinity device by April 25.

The newly added Apple TV+ service can be accessed by Xfinity customers by saying “Apple TV+” into the voice remote or by saying the name of a desired title from the streaming service.

  • Google and Disney kiss and make up, YouTube TV members still getting a discount

Google and Disney kiss and make up, YouTube TV members still getting a discount

A few days after Google announced that its YouTube TV service lost all Disney-owned channels, the search giant is back with another statement that confirms it has reached an agreement with Disney to return its content to YouTube TV.

Obviously, that means that the YouTube TV price will return to $65 for all subscribers. Google also announced that it has started to restore access to Disney networks like ESPN and FX, including their live and on-demand content, as well as recordings that were previously stored in the Library.

Additionally, YouTube TV will start broadcasting the local ABC stations over the course of the day, so if you don’t see them available in your channel list, be patient.

Now, the big surprise is that Google will still honor a one-time $15 credit for all YouTube TV subscribers affected by the issue. Even those who have not yet received the $15 discount will receive the one-time credit on their next bill.

The announcement was published on YouTube’s blog today, December 19, so throughout the remainder of the day, access to Disney’s channels should be restored.

UBS Brings TV Sports Closer To Life

CEO Ralph Hamers wants banking services to be more like Netflix. Now the bank is sponsoring a mini-series that fits with UBS’ private banking plans.

On November 14, the television mini-series Front Office starts on Players TV channel and – as its says in its title – will be presented by UBS. Switzerland’s biggest bank paid a seven-figure sum for a multi-year sponsorship agreement with the producer Players Media.

The mini-series revolves around top American athletes discussing business ideas with their fans. The show uses a similar format to The Lion’s Den.

The series will feature among others, NBA basketball Phoenix Suns player Chris Paul. A year ago, UBS launched a client segment of athletes and entertainers in the U.S.

It hired former professional football player Adewale Ogunleye (pictured below) to head the unit. Ogunleye, who has an MBA from George Washington University, reports to local private banking chief Jason Chandler.

  • Disney Plus Day brings a special 2$ offer for the first month of subscription

Disney Plus Day brings a special 2$ offer for the first month of subscription

Disney Plus first got released in 2019 on November 12th, which Disney refers to as Disney Plus Day. This year, for Disney Plus Day, the entertainment giant is making a special offer for new-to-be and returning subscribers. For their first month of subscription, the fee drops from 8$ to 2$.

In addition to the 6$ cut for its streaming platform, Disney has some other special perks and offers under its sleeve as well. For example, you can get a five percent discount on Disney Plus products at WizKids and a 10 percent on Funko ones if you use the code DISNEYPLUSDAY.

What’s more, over 200 AMC movie theaters will have surprise Disney movies playing for only 5$ a ticket between November 12th and 14th. On top of that, you will get a Disney Plus poster and some special concessions.

On a different note, it seems the house of Mickey is keeping up with the new trends of the digital world. Disney will apparently be releasing NFTs in the form of golden statues of some of its most popular characters.

Last but not least, Disney Plus Day is a good day to visit one of the famed Disney theme parks like Disney World or Disneyland. Visitors with a subscription can enter the parks 30 minutes earlier than usual, as well as free Disney PhotoPass photo downloads. There will also be new merchandise from Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar, so parents get their wallets ready. Additionally, some e-books will get discounted to as little as 1$ a piece until November 17th.

As for the 2$ special offer for your first month of Disney Plus, it will be available from November 12th until the 14th, so make sure you catch it. It’s a great opportunity to see if you would like the shows Disney has to offer if you haven’t jumped on that bandwagon yet. Just remember that after the first month the price jumps back to that monthly 8$ fee.
