Instagram enables download of public Reels in the US

Instagram introduced Reels in 2020, and since then, this feature’s popularity has grown, reaching over 2.35 billion monthly active users. Now, Instagram is rolling out a new feature for its users in the US.

Adam Mosseri, CEO of Instagram, announced on his broadcast channel that the company will allow users to download Reels to their camera roll. The process is simple: just tap the share button and select the download option.

It’s important to note that only Reels from public accounts can be downloaded, and even if you have a public account, you can choose to turn off the Reel download option.

Mosseri did not mention whether the downloaded Reels would have watermarks, but based on the picture he uploaded, it is safe to assume that downloaded Reels will indeed bear watermarks, much like they do right now.

Currently, every Instagram user can download and share their own Reels on different platforms. However, with this new feature, users will also be able to share other people’s Reels on platforms like TikTok, for example.

TikTok has had this feature for years, and videos with the TikTok logo are now prevalent on various social platforms, contributing to the Chinese video-sharing app’s increasing popularity.

It’s worth noting that although videos with TikTok’s logo are no longer promoted by Instagram’s algorithms, their number on the platform remains substantial. With this new update, there is a chance for Instagram’s logo to appear frequently on its rival platforms as well.

While it is likely that this feature will eventually be available for users worldwide, the exact timeline for its global release remains unknown. We will have to wait and see when that happens.

  • Bill to ban TikTok in the U.S. takes its first steps toward the White House

Bill to ban TikTok in the U.S. takes its first steps toward the White House

on Tuesday Republicans on the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee took short-form video app TikTok closer to its final tick in the U.S. Concerned about reports that TikTok collects personal data from its U.S. subscribers, and might even collect keystrokes from those using TikTok’s  in-app browser, legislation that would result in the ban of TikTok on all U.S. mobile devices has advanced.
The legislation would give President Joe Biden the authority to ban the popular app in the U.S. Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) said, “Everybody knows what TikTok is. It’s too dangerous to be on our phones as members of Congress.I think, it’s too dangerous to be on our children’s phones. That’s the whole point of this bill.” The U.S. in December banned TikTok from government-owned phones.
McCaul’s DATA Act (H.R. 1153) advanced out of committee by a vote of 24 to 16. Voting on the proposed bill was split along party lines with the 24 votes in favor of moving the legislation along coming from all of the Republicans on the committee while the 16 dissenting votes came from all of the Democrats on the committee. McCaul said that he hoped the voting isn’t the start of a breakdown in bipartisanship when it comes to Chinese technology.
In 2021, TikTok hit one billion monthly users, and last August, a survey revealed that 67% of teens in the states use TikTok and 16% use it constantly. Insider Intelligence says that TikTok owns 2.3% of the digital ad market behind heavyweights like Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Alibaba. The company is owned by Chinese firm Byte Dance, and while it denies any ties with Beijing’s spying operations, like other Chinese companies it must agree to comply with all requests from the country’s intelligence agency.
In a statement, TikTok says, “A U.S. ban on TikTok is a ban on the export of American culture and values to the billion-plus people who use our service worldwide. We’re disappointed to see this rushed piece of legislation move forward, despite its considerable negative impact on the free speech rights of millions of Americans who use and love TikTok.”
The bill has a long road ahead of it. If it gets voted out of the Republican-controlled House, it would still need to be voted on in the Democrat-controlled Senate which could be a problem. And should the bill pass the Senate, it would then require the president to sign the bill, or he could veto it. If Biden does the latter, the veto can be overturned with a two-thirds
vote from members of the House and Senate.
A few years ago, when Donald Trump was president, a deal was reportedly in place that would have seen Oracle and Walmart buy the app’s U.S. operations from TikTok owner ByteDance. But the deal never got done and Trump turned his attention toward more pressing matters such as the upcoming presidential election. But Needham analyst Laura Martin says that this time a deal could be finalized.
While the platform could be weakened, “it wouldn’t just disappear and get shut down,” Martin said. She also said that “Implications are great for anybody that has been losing market share to TikTok.” Martin picked Snapchat, Facebook, and YouTube as platforms that would be big winners if TikTok gets banned in the U.S.
Another analyst, JMP’s Andrew Boone, said that if TikTok is banned in the states, Facebook would be a big winner because of the money that parent company Meta has been throwing at Facebook’s TikTok rival Reels. Boone also noted that “If TikTok were to go away, I think that there would be a lot more consumption of Instagram Reels.” The analyst also says that Snapchat’s Spotlight and YouTube Shorts would both benefit from the disappearance of TikTok.

The State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) set its exchange rate at VND23,658, down 0.008%.

The greenback was sold VND24,615 on the black market, the same as the previous weekend.

The dollar struggled to gain a foothold on Monday and was languishing at five-month lows as traders looked past stronger than anticipated U.S. jobs data, while growing hopes of China reopening boosted risk sentiment.

  • First Vietnamese pomelo exported to US

First Vietnamese pomelo exported to US

Pomelo became the seventh Vietnamese fruit to be officially exported to the U.S. Monday with the first 100 tons being transported from the southern province of Ben Tre.

The batch is split into six containers. Four of them will be exported by air and two by sea.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Tran Thanh Nam said at the announcement ceremony Monday that the U.S. is one of the most difficult markets in the world but has large demand for fresh fruits.

He added that Americans consume about 12 million tons of fruits annually, with 30% of them imported.

The exported pomelo must come from the 36 growing areas in Vietnam that have been registered with U.S. authorities.

They span 752 hectares, or 0.71% of Vietnam’s total pomelo growing area.

Many measures must be strictly taken to ensure the fruits are clean and healthy.

Ben Tre Province Chairman Tran Ngoc Tam said that of the seven Vietnamese fruits that are exported to the U.S., the province has three: pomelo, longan and rambutan.

Other fruits that have been approved for official U.S. exports are mango, dragon fruit, star apple and lychee.

  • VinFast ships first electric vehicles to US

VinFast ships first electric vehicles to US

VinFast had shipped its first batch of 999 cars to the U.S., capping a five-year bid to develop an auto production hub in Vietnam for markets in North America and Europe.

The company said that the first cars are expected to be handed over to customers by the end of December.

VinFast Chief Executive Le Thi Thu Thuy said some of the VF 8 electric SUVs being shipped on Friday would be sent to U.S. car subscription service Autonomy but the majority would go to retail buyers who have ordered the car.

Thuy said VinFast expected to be able to ship a second batch of cars to the United States, its first export market, around January.

VinFast is in the process of building an electric vehicle plant in North Carolina that is awaiting final regulatory approval from local officials.

Thuy said the company expected to start production at the North Carolina factory from July 2024 and that electric vehicles built there would qualify for incentives under the terms of the Inflation Reduction Act signed by U.S. President Joe Biden.

The Inflation Reduction Act, as currently written, requires automakers to have 50% of critical minerals used in EV batteries come from North America or U.S. allies by 2024, rising to 80% by the end of 2026.

Major automakers have said those targets are unrealistic and it was not immediately clear how VinFast would meet the sourcing requirements.

“The IRA came as a surprise to all of us but it doesn’t really impact our strategy in the U.S.,” Thuy told Reuters. “As soon as we start manufacturing cars in the U.S., our customers will be eligible (for) the tax incentive.”

VinFast said last week that Autonomy had ordered 2,500 electric vehicles, its largest corporate order to date. VinFast has said it has almost 65,000 orders globally in total and expects to sell 750,000 EVs annually by 2026.

The North Carolina factory project is running months behind schedule, based on the company’s initial targets, and the first shipment of EVs built by VinFast was short of the initial goal to deliver as many as 5,000 cars built at its factory in Haiphong by December.

VinFast officials said the number 999 for the vehicles shipped in the first batch had been chosen because it is considered a lucky number in Vietnam.

“There is no luckier number than 999,” Thuy said. The Panamanian-chartered transport ship used to send the first shipment of VinFast EVs had the capacity to carry up to 2,000 vehicles, officials said.

Shares in VinFast’s listed parent company, Vingroup, which also has property and resort development businesses, were up 5.41% on Friday morning.

BNP Paribas Left With Cash After U.S. Exit

BNP Paribas is exiting its U.S. retail business providing its expansion plans with a financial boost. The French bank is selling its U.S. Bank of the West – for $16.3billion to Bank of Montreal, it said in a statement Monday

With the sale proceeds BNP Paribas could be on the lookout to buy a smaller tech company, the British newspaper writes, citing analysts who added that no deal was imminent.

It will concentrate on expanding its business in Europe, the report says. In this context, an acquisition in Switzerland could also be an option.

Last month BNP Paribas spotted a deal with Credit Suisse: the Swiss lender, which suffered more than $5 billion in losses on Archegos’ unwind earlier this year, offloaded its prime brokerage clients to its French counterpart.

Swiss Bank Expands Presence in U.S.

Bank Vontobel will open an office in Miami in coming months, in an expansion of its U.S. onshore presence.

Zurich-based Vontobel will launch a wealth management office in Miami, its second in the U.S., CEO Zeno Staub said on Tuesday. The Swiss bank is the latest in a host of wealth managers to head for the Florida city, a hub for Latin American money.

Vontobel has the local market in mind: Within the U.S., there is a migration of wealth from the North to the South, Staub said. More and more local wealth is going to Florida.

East coast states like New Hampshire and Connecticut are traditionally havens of wealthy individuals, but that is changing. A shift on Wall Street, which began shifting towards Florida during the pandemic, may also be playing a role.

Vontobel’s approach is asset-light, in that just as in Hong Kong, in Miami it will book its wealthy clients’ assets in Switzerland, the outlet reported. The bank follows the same approach in New York, where it opened an office four years ago.

  • Vietnam, US trade to hit unprecedented $100 billion

Vietnam, US trade to hit unprecedented $100 billion

Vietnam–U.S. trade could reach $100 billion for the first time this year, up 221 times against the figure in 1995 when the two countries first established diplomatic relations.

In the first eight months, the figure hit $73 billion. Last year, it was $90.8 billion, Hoang Quang Phong, deputy chairman of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), told a forum Tuesday.

In the last five years, Vietnam’s exports to the U.S. increased on average by 230 percent each year, while the figure from U.S. to Vietnam was 175 percent.

Vietnam is the 10th biggest trade partner of the U.S., while the U.S. is Vietnam’s biggest trade partner.

Although the Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted supply chains, many U.S. businesses have been investing in projects in Vietnam in the sectors of manufacturing and processing, clean energy, aviation, healthcare, and pharmaceuticals.

On the other hand, Vietnam’s exports to the U.S. are in the areas of furniture, footwear and garments.

Ngo Sy Hoai, deputy chairman of the Association of Vietnam Timber and Forest Products, said Vietnam is the biggest exporter of wood products to the U.S.

Vietnam is also the second biggest importer of U.S. wood material behind China, he added.

Although the wood sector has targeted a value of $10 billion exports to the U.S., actual figures are likely to reach $8 billion this year due to Covid-19 impacts, he said.

Hoai added that Vietnamese companies need to pay more attention to U.S. regulations on legal logging to prove their materials were not illegally cut.

Former Vietnam Ambassador to the U.S. Pham Quang Vinh said although the U.S. cannot come back to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), it has made economic initiatives in digital trade, infrastructure and energy, which will offer new partnership potential between both countries.

Vietnam and the U.S. could consider another bilateral free trade agreement based on existing commitments.

US direct flight fare around $1,000

A one-way ticket from Vietnam to the U.S. will cost around $1,000 and be available on the Vietnam Airlines website in a few days, the carrier has said.

There would be a reduced number of passengers to lower the aircraft’s weight to ensure no fuel stops are needed, CEO Le Hong Ha told reporters Tuesday.

On the Boeing 787 and Airbus 350 planes Vietnam Airlines uses, this means a maximum of 210-220 passengers instead of the full complement of 300, he said.

The 2.2 million Vietnamese-Americans in the U.S. would be the main targets in the future, he said.

The Vietnam-U.S. direct route would not be profitable for five to 10 years, but it is better to fly to sustain cash flows, he said.

Passengers allowed to enter Vietnam from the U.S. now amid Covid-19 are experts, businesspeople and high-skilled workers.

The first regular direct flight to the U.S. will leave HCMC in the evening of November 28, achieving a dream conceived nearly two decades ago.

It will arrive in San Francisco 13 hours and 50 minutes later.

China Telecom’s license revoked in the US

The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has voted to revoke the authorization for China Telecom’s subsidiary in the US.

Citing national security concerns, officials ordered China Telecom Americas to discontinue its services in the US within 60 days. The subsidiary has been operating in the US for nearly two decades.

In a statement released, the FCC said, “China Telecom Americas, a U.S. subsidiary of a Chinese state-owned enterprise, is subject to exploitation, influence, and control by the Chinese government and is highly likely to be forced to comply with Chinese government requests without sufficient legal procedures subject to independent judicial oversight.”

China Telecom has expressed disappointment over the decision and intends to “pursue available options” in hopes of continuing serving its customers.

During the first nine months of this year, China Telecom added 69 million 5G subscribers in China, bringing it total mobile base in China is 369 million subscribers.

  • The History of Solidarity Between Asian and Black Americans

The History of Solidarity Between Asian and Black Americans

Recently, a targeted shooting took place in Atlanta, killing Paul Michels, Xiaojie Tan, Chung Park, Delaina Ashley, Hyun Jung, and more. After the incident, an initiative dubbed “Stop AAPI Hate” was founded to provide information and resources on ways to offer support to the Asian community.

There has been a discourse around gender-based violence, with the main target being the Asian-American community. The solidarity between Asian and Black Americans has a long history, with Asian-American activists and leaders demanding policy initiatives to address the major anti-Asian racism.

    The racism concerns

The murder of George Floyd by police raised global concerns where racist violence conversations dominated the news. The reckoning against racism targeting the anti-blacks has caused cases of comparisons between corporate and mainstream responses to the ‘stopAsianHate” and the black lives movement.

Whereas solidarity has existed between these movements, there have been demands for statements to be made by corporates as it happened after the killing of Floyd. The black Americans are concerned with the response by the Asian community regarding the issuance of corporate statements.

Most of the crimes of hate targeting Asians living in America have been perpetrated by the whites. However, concerns about violence against Asians have been actively raised through social media.

    The calls of solidarity

Asian-American solidarity has existed since 1955, when the Bandung conference was held. Representatives from African and Asian continents congregated to discuss the issues of decolonization. Within the Imaginary of American, the interest was in maintaining a good relationship between the Asian and Black American communities.

Cultural diversity has been a major concern among communities today and academicians are doing lots of research in this area.

Black Lives Matter and diversity issues essays

Racism and discrimination are a major concern today because they affect the relationships between communities and the countries at large. There is a need to conduct research about why “Black Lives Matter” as mentioned in these essays on diversity on EduZaurus. From the essay samples, students in universities can get inspired to write essays addressing the issues of diversity. They can arrive at conclusions and give recommendations regarding what should be done to promote solidarity between communities.

    Tension between communities

Tension has existed between Asian Americans and Black Americans such that Asians feel like slaves in America. A great American racial discourse move is the ability to manage the racial injustices and differences between the two communities using unique approaches.

What is needed most is a conversation regarding the differences in the experiences between Black Americans and Asian Americans. Understanding the significance of the blacks in society can be achieved through writing essays on “Black Live Matter.”

    Women promoting solidarity

Fighting for justice requires the contribution of leaders and activists from diverse communities. Activist and scholar, Akemi Kochiyama, has played an important educational role in building a multicultural community.

She is a director at the Manhattan school that is committed to educating the community on matters of equality, social justice, and diversity. Akemi is inspired by modern artists, activists, human and civil rights activists, and educators who are committed to practicing a wider and multicultural solidarity vision.

Moni Tep is a black community organizer and a leader of Creative Justice. Creative Justice is a program that offers a healing platform for young people using an art-focused approach. Under Moni’s leadership, mentors pay more attention to the significance of anti-racism, skill-building, collaborative work, and social justice.

Emily Akpan is also a community leader who works alongside the Tsuru for solidarity organization. This organization advocates social immigration policy implementation and solidarity within communities dealing with violence and racist issues.

    Conclusion

Activists, leaders, and educators are concerned with the enslavement of Asians in America and they consider this a nuisance. A lot has been said about racism concerns and the key players, including women, have played an active role in promoting solidarity. What the anti-racism groups do to address the situation is what can determine how possible it is for Asians and Americans to live in harmony.
