Apple Korea targets 15pc market share

Apple Korea is going head on to Samsung on its home turf, on target to sell 2.9 million iPhones in South Korea this year, giving it a market share of about 15 per cent.

At the end of last month it had sold 2.6 million iPhones, and is forecasting improved results for the year. Its operating profit has reached more than KRW800 billion (US$684 million) on revenue of KRW3 trillion, according to Yonhap News Agency.

Sales of iPhones account for more than 75 per cent of Apple’s revenue in Korea, sources say. It launched the iPhone 7 in October with the opportunity to take share from market leader Samsung after its Galaxy Note 7 debacle.

On top of that, the Cupertino-based tech company is building its first flagship retail store in Seoul, expected to be completed next November, right across the street from Samsung’s headquarters.

Apple’s market share in Korea peaked at 33 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2014 following the launch of the iPhone 6, according to Counterpoint. Samsung and LG now have a combined market share of more than 80 per cent. LG had a 19 per cent market share in the second quarter of this year.

South Korea and Japan, where the iPhone had more than a 50 per share for the three-month period ending October 30, are rare growth markets in Asia for Apple. Its iPhone shipments in China plunged 31 per cent to 7.5 million units in the third quarter, with market share falling to 6.2 from 10.3 per cent, according to Strategy Analytics.

Apple reportedly reduced orders from component suppliers for its iPhone 7 models early this month because of demand being weaker than expected in many markets, including China.

Apple launched the iPhone 7 in the country in October and has the opportunity to take share from market leader Samsung in its home country after its Galaxy Note 7 debacle. The Cupertino-based vendor is building its first flagship retail store in Seoul, which is expected to be completed in November 2017 and is located across the street from Samsung’s headquarters.

The US vendor’s market share in South Korea peaked at 33 per cent in Q4 2014 following the launch of the iPhone 6, according to Counterpoint.

Samsung and LG now have a combined market share of more than 80 per cent. LG had a 19 per cent market share in Q2.

South Korea and Japan, where the iPhone had more than a 50 per share for the three-month period ending 30 October, are rare growth markets in Asia for Apple.

iPhone shipments in China plunged 31 per cent to 7.5 million units in Q3, with Apple’s market share falling to 6.2 per cent from 10.3 per cent in Q315, according to Strategy Analytics. Earlier this month Apple reportedly reduced orders from component suppliers for its new iPhone 7 models due to weaker than expected demand in many markets, including China.

Charging-device producer Anker aims to tap Indonesian market

Anker, a company based in Seattle, the US, and which specializes in USB charging products, has opened an official store in Jakarta, its first in Southeast Asia, in the hope of reaping benefits from the Indonesian market, the largest economy in the region.

Anker’s regional sales head for Asia Pacific Romeo Luo told that the company had sold more than 300 million products globally this year and hoped to expand its leverage in Indonesia, particularly “with those people who are concerned about quality and safety, not just price.”

“We are sure that our products can guarantee safety for smartphone users in Indonesia, particularly for high-end brands,” he said in Jakarta on Thursday.

He said that opening the official store in Indonesia, home to around 250 million people, would be the first step by the brand before penetrating further into other countries in Southeast Asia.

“I know the speed of the mobile phone sales growth here. The quantity is huge and most of those users will need power banks when stuck in traffic,” he said.

He said he was confident that the brand could gain popularity in Indonesia, mainly as a result of the lack of similar competitors that exclusively specialized in power-charging products and consumer trends toward accessing social media, which is power consuming.

Romeo added that by the end of 2017, the firm established in 2011 by former employees of search engine giant Google, expected to open 50 new outlets spread across major cities in Indonesia.

  • 44 BKK outlets moving ownership

    44 BKK outlets moving ownership

Bangkok-based IT chain store Com7, under the Banana brand, has taken over 44 BKK outlets from Bangkok Telecom 999.

The TB184 million (US$5.1 million) deal is a bid by Com7 to drive its expansion into the mid- and entry-level segments.

“This is our first acquisition for the purpose of pursuing growth,” says Com7 chief executive Sura Khanittaweekul. The roll-out is expected to be completed in the first quarter of next year.

Com7 will keep the BKK branding on its acquired stores, most of which are in high-density areas. At least 10 of the stores compete directly with Com7.

BKK Telecom 999 still has 36 BKK branches.

Sura says the acquisition will enable Com7 to expand more quickly as it will not need to build its own stores. It will be able to tap the mid- and entry-level markets with handsets priced below TB10,000 a unit.

Com7 aims to expand its retail shops to 500 branches by the end of next year, up from 365. It launched Bananastore.com in August to extend its sale channels online.

  • Huawei opens new concept store

    Huawei opens new concept store

Huawei introduced a new retail concept in its line-up of experience stores during a recent opening at SM City San Lazaro, Manila. The newly opened branch is the first in the city of Manila and the 44th in the country.

SI 3.0, the design blueprint of the Huawei SM San Lazaro store is guided by four traits – simple, premium, warm, and comfortable. Relative to its predecessor, the SI 2.0, the new design is marked with wider spaces and lighter ventilation promising an enhanced and more welcoming customer experience.

“Huawei continues to prove to be a game changer in the smartphone industry this year, and we have big plans to take advantage of this momentum. Our high-end premium phones such as the P9 and Mate 8 have been the drivers of this smashing success. As such, we would like to extend this premium, high-quality identity to consumer experience at our stores,” said Andy Fang, Country Head at Huawei Philippines.

  • Apple’s iPhone 7 Sees Discounting as China Sales Fall

Apple’s iPhone 7 Sees Discounting as China Sales Fall

Jun Zhang today reiterates a Neutral rating, and a $102 price target, warning that sales of the iPhone in China, he estimates, are “still weaker than retail channels” as discounting of the phone has popped up across the country.

iPhone sales, presumably in dollars, he doesn’t specify — fell by 6% in November, and are probably down “slightly” from November this month, as discounting takes hold outside of tight supplies at Apple’s online store:

Overall iPhone sales in China were down 6% in November and slightly down MoM in November due to some pushes in “single day” sales. In our view, iPh- one 7 sales will continue trending down and many retailers in China have al- ready started discounting ($50) the iPhone 7 in November. iPhone 7 Plus sup- ply is catching up in November, and sales have grown MoM in November. iPh- one 6/6S sales continue to be weak. The 7 Plus model currently accounts for 60% of iPhone 7 sales in China. We started seeing some retailers discounting this model in November. In our view, there is a waitlist if ordered from Apple’s online store, but consumers can easily buy them from local stores and third party retail stores. Since the jet black mod- el has high return rate, Apple might try to control capacity. Overall, we believe iPhone sales in China are still weaker than retail channels expected.

Zhang also cautions investors not to be mislead if they hear of component orders rising come the March quarter. In his view, “Some noise of Apple increasing orders might come from the iPad instead of the iPhone,” given he sees Apple refreshing the various iPad models in March.

The store will be the US tech brand’s 489th worldwide

Apple has already opened 20 new stores worldwide this year, including in Saint-Germain in Paris, Hong Kong and in Zhujiang New Town in Guangzhou, China.

The store will formally open at 10am Saturday morning.

  • Huge iPhone 7 sales reported in Vietnam

Huge iPhone 7 sales reported in Vietnam

Vien Thong A retailer said they would do their best to meet demands for 8,000 orders. FPT Shop in HCM City said they about 4,000 devices should be sold in the morning when the shop started the ceremony to transfer the pre-ordered phones.

Doan Van Hieu Em, CEO of The Gioi Di Dong Store in District 1 also said they had seen a surge in customers. Em said they wouldn’t hold the transfer ceremony but make sure that the service is fast.

“We’ll hold a product introduction and customer appreciation programme for buying the iPhone 7 tonight,” he said. “We expected to sell 10,000 devices today.”

Meanwhile the atmosphere at smaller retail shops such as Hnam Mobile or CellPhoneS was quieter. Big retailers had hoarded most of the products so there’s not much left for them. Major mobile network operators are also selling the iPhone 7. Viettel said they would transfer 3,000 pre-ordered phones to customers on November 11.

Most retailers confirmed the popularity of Apple products, especially iPhone 7 Plus this year. 70% of their orders are for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. According to FPT Shop, the order for iPhone 7 Plus in the first day was four times higher than the iPhone 6 Plus.

Retailers are reporting a shortage of iPhone 7 in jet black. Customers also favour matte black colour followed by gold and rose gold.

It is predicted that by the end of November, nearly 100,000 iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus would be sold in Vietnam.

  • Banana acquires 44 Bangkok outlets

    Banana acquires 44 Bangkok outlets

A Bangkok IT store in a shopping mall in Bangkok. The stores will complete their transfer to Banana in the first quarter of 2017.

Com7, the Bangkok-based IT chain store under the Banana brand, has taken over 44 BKK shops from Bangkok Telecom 999 for 184 million baht in a drive to accelerate its expansion into the mid- and entry-level segments.

“This is our first acquisition for the purpose of pursuing growth,” said Sura Khanittaweekul, chief executive of Com7.

The move is a reflection of how medium-sized IT retail chain stores in Thailand are trying to survive the hyper-competitive handset sales market.

Small retail chains are being forced to close their shops because they cannot compete directly with cash-rich large stores.

The process of transferring BKK’s shops will begin on Dec 1 and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2017, Mr Sura said.

Com7 will operate the acquired 44 stores under the BKK brand, most of which are located in high-density areas. At least 10 BKK shops (out of the 44 acquired stores) compete directly with Com7.

BKK Telecom 999 sold 44 branches out of its 80 shops.

Mr Sura said the acquisition will enable Com7’s expansion strategy to grow faster, as the company need not build its own stores, which takes time and planning.

The average size of a BKK shop is 30-70 square metres, while the average size of a Banana shop is 100 sq m.

He said the acquisition of the BKK shops will enable Com7 to penetrated untapped mid- and entry-level markets, with handsets priced below 10,000 baht each.

“Returns on the acquisition can be expected over the next 3-4 years,” Mr Sura said.

Most Com7 branches are situated in prime locations in department stores serving premium customers with high purchasing power.

Thailand’s smartphone market is quite mature. There is still an extensive demand in the mid-level handset segment in the replacement market.

Com7 aims to expand its retail shops to 500 branches by 2017, up from 365.

In August, Com7 launched bananastore.com to extend its sale channels online to capitalise on new-generation customers who lead the digital lifestyle trend.

“We aim to have 1 billion baht in total sales revenue in 2017,” Mr Sura said.

Com7 expects revenue to grow 10% to 17 billion baht this year. Of the total, 35% will come from sales of mobile phones, 30% from computers, 10% from tablets and the rest from accessories.

  • Samsung Galaxy On7 Launched In South Korea

Samsung Galaxy On7 Launched In South Korea

In order to recover their profit lost due to Galaxy Note 7 issues, Samsung decided to launch the Galaxy On7 in South Korea. The phone is 55-inch and is packed with 3GB Ram and a 16GB memory. It is metal framed and comes with an 8-megapixel front camera and 13-megapixel back camera.

The Samsung Galaxy On7 is available in two different colors of Black and Gold. It is priced at 399,000 won, which is more or less $399. The phone is available with features similar to its flagship models, like the F1.0 aperture that allows filming even on a low light setting. It is also available with fingerprint recognition and many more.

It should be remembered that the Galaxy On5and the Galaxy On7 were launched last year in India, but they were restricted in most South Asian countries. On the other hand, the Galaxy On7 is going global after it was launched in China last September and India just last month.

When it comes to features, the Galaxy On7 does not disappoint. It comes with 5.5-inch touchscreen display and in 1920 x 1080 pixels. The one that was launched in South Korea is available with a 1.6GHz processor, while the Indian and Chinese versions come with Snapdragon 625 chips.

When it comes to its camera feature, the phone can take impressive selfies as well as video chats. Both front and back cameras come with f/1.9 apertures. The Galaxy On7 runs in Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and operates with 4G LTE connectivity. It also comes with a metal body that never fails to add a touch of class.

LG and Apple, the two known rivals of Samsung, were able to experience great sales in South Korea with their models V20 and iPhone 7 respectively. The said boost of sales is blamed to the Note 7 dilemma. But with the coming of the Galaxy On7, Samsung hopes it can make up for the loss profit.

  • Despite recent setbacks, LeEco has big retail ambitions in China

Despite recent setbacks, LeEco has big retail ambitions in China

LeEco may have had some high-profile setbacks in recent weeks, with news coming from the company that it had overextended itself financially in some areas, but the Chinese electronics maker and service provider is still doing ambitious things in retail, starting with a new flagship store it opened at its Beijing headquarters earlier this year.

We toured the store, and spoke to LeEco VP of retail Steve Zhao about some of the inspiration for the retail space and its intended purpose. A significant portion of Chinese electronics shoppers do their buying online, so the focus is on building a store that provides experiences and examples of how LeEco devices and services might work for a consumer in their daily lives, rather than on stocking shelves with as much inventory as possible.

From flooring and furniture materials to layout and staff, the LeEco store feels like an Apple Store, which isn’t surprising given its aims and intent. But this is also only the first iteration of what’s to come; Zhao told me that their first major retail location in a shopping centre will dwarf the current flagship in size and scope, with a launch planned for sometime later in 2017.
