Lat Phrao to have newest Le Tao cafe

Thailand’s latest Le Tao cafe has officially opened at Central Plaza Lat Phrao, with celebrities cooking for charity at its launch event.

The Japanese cheesecake and bakery concept arrived in Thailand two years ago, courtesy of DB Group managing directors Dolnapa Tumwattana and Kwanchai Ongkamongkol.

Actors Varodom “Kimmon” Khemmonta and Suradet “Bas” Piniwat from Deun Kiaw Deun helped make pancakes at the store’s launch. A strawberry pancake by Kimmon and chocolate pancake by Bas were auctioned, raising THB50,000 (US$1570) for Siriraj Hospital.

From Otaru city on Hokkaido Island, Le Tao spread throughout Japan with its combination of the culture of Japanese dessert-making with Western baking. Pancakes take up to 15 minutes to bake, and are topped with maple syrup, chocolate or strawberry sauce plus fruit on request, and served with fresh cream and vanilla ice cream. The Le Tao Pancake offers a cheese flavour.

Other popular desserts include cheesecake, milk roll, cheese served in a cup, and cookies stuffed with cheese.

Le Tao also has branches at Siam Paragon, The EmQuartier and Central Bang Na in Bangkok.

  • Jollibee opens 27th store in Davao

Jollibee opens 27th store in Davao

They say Jollibee is an indicator of progress. There’s this notion that when there is a branch of Jollibee in a place, it can be considered as a city. This may not be necessarily true but no one can argue that Jollibee, indeed, is an indicator of progress as it genuinely brings happiness to a place through its good food and “happy place” set-up. This year, Dabawenyos living near Puan, Davao City have more reasons to be happy as Jollibee – Puan branch opened last January 19.

The newest store is the 27th branch of Jollibee in Davao City and 130th in Mindanao. It is open 24 hours and has a Drive Thru store. Just like any store opening, it started with a blessing a day earlier, a ribbon-cutting ceremony on the day and a Chicken Joy toast. The store team was also introduced to the customers. The first-day customers were also entertained with a Jollitown Dance by the Jollibee store management team. LanghapSarap meals were also offered to those who graced the event.

  • World’s first Ruby KitKat drops in Japan for Valentine’s Day

World’s first Ruby KitKat drops in Japan for Valentine’s Day

Forget a diamond ring for Valentine’s Day – this has been trumped by a ruby KitKat chocolate snack by Nestle Japan.

Its Sublime Ruby KitKat has been unveiled with due ceremony in Tokyo, and has been rolled out in KitKat Chocolatory boutiques across Japan, a further addition to Nestle’s “Made-In-Japan” luxury flavours for the snack.

It is made from the new Ruby chocolate, which differs in flavour from traditional bitter, milk and white chocolate. Swiss chocolate maker Barry Callebaut spent more than 10 years developing its masterpiece, released in Shanghai in September.

Made from the ruby cocoa bean, it is described as a new experience with an intense taste and characteristic reddish colour. It is not bitter, milky or sweet, but has a balance between berry fruitiness and smoothness. No berries, flavours or colours are added.

Chef/patissier Yasumasa Takagi, who has been supervising new KitKat products since 2003, managed to encompass the new chocolate in KitKat form in time for the product to be ready in Japan ahead of Valentine’s Day.

Units of Sublime Ruby KitKat will be available in limited numbers, with an assortment box to follow including the new product.i

  • Jollibee eyeing a late 2018 opening for Guam

Jollibee eyeing a late 2018 opening for Guam

The Jollibee corporate office in the Philippines has confirmed that the Filipino fast-food giant will once again open a branch on Guam later this year.

The target opening is the fourth quarter of 2018, according to a statement from the corporate office.

Maxi D. Peralta Jr., assistant vice president and head of international franchising at Jollibee Foods, spoke on behalf of the company. Peralta stated Jollibee’s first store on Guam will be located in the vicinity of Marine Corps Drive and Route 16/Army Drive in Dededo.

“We have carefully chosen a location that is strategic and within Guam’s main retail circulation,” Peralta told.

    Micronesia Mall location?

According to reports received, the new Jollibee will be built within the Micronesia Mall compound, although mall management has yet to confirm the reports.

Peralta said the company cannot disclose the franchisee’s name yet.

“As a preferred strategy for expansion and similar to our approach in other markets, we have already awarded a territory franchise for Guam,” Peralta told. “Our franchise partner has successful business interests in Guam and the Philippines.”

    Overseas expansion plans

Known for its crispy fried chicken, sweet spaghetti and other Filipino twists on patties, hot dogs, egg rolls and noodles, Jollibee’s Guam re-entry was announced as part of its overseas expansion plans.

Jollibee Chairman Tony Tancaktiong spoke to Manila media about Jollibee’s overseas plans after the company’s latest annual stockholders meeting in July 2017. Guam was mentioned in the list of planned franchise locations.

Jollibee had two franchise-run restaurants on Guam and two on Saipan, but its Marianas presence ended more than a decade ago as the islands went through an economic downturn. Jollibee also had trouble competing with Guam players that offered larger portions.

The company builds, runs and franchises quick-service restaurants. A Jollibee international franchise applicant must have a minimum net worth of $5 million, according to the company’s website.

Internationally, Jollibee had 139 stores with 32 in the United States, 72 in Vietnam, 13 in Brunei, one in Hong Kong, two in Singapore and 19 in the Middle East, according to the company’s profile for investors.

  • Alibaba’s Hema supermarket chain to open more stores

Alibaba’s Hema supermarket chain to open more stores

Alibaba’s Hema supermarket says it will open three stores in the Chinese city of Xian by the end of this year.

The offline supermarket’s expansion into the northwestern Chinese city follows an announcement that it will add 30 locations in Beijing by year-end, rapidly expanding its store count in the capital to 35 from the current five.

The Beijing and Xian expansion, together, more than doubles Hema’s presence – currently 26 stores in seven Chinese cities, including 14 in Shanghai, five in Beijing, two in Ningpo, two in Hangzhou, and one each in Shenzhen, Suzhou and the Southwest city of Guiyang.

Launched in March 2015, the ‘new retail’-driven supermarket is the purest manifestation of Alibaba’s ambitions to marry online with offline, offering consumers a “more-efficient and flexible” shopping experience.

It starts with a mobile app that allows for researching of products while consumers browse the store. All payments are handled through Alipay, the mobile-payments platform owned by Alibaba’s related company Ant Financial. To improve consumers’ experience, the data collected from transactions is used to personalise recommendations, while geographic data helps to plan the most efficient delivery routes. Residents living within a 3km radius of a Hema store can have their groceries delivered to their doors as quickly as 30 minutes after ordering.

    Government partnership

Expanding Alibaba’s Hema supermarket in Xian is part of a series of pacts Alibaba Group signed with the city government on Tuesday, including a memorandum of understanding for Alibaba’s new Silk Road headquarters, which the company will build in the city in the next few years. The two parties signed a total of 11 strategic partnership agreements spanning cloud computing, smart logistics, New Retail and financial services.

Tianhua Zhong, vice president of Alibaba Group, said the partnership with the city government has been progressing smoothly since talks began last summer, adding that the next stage of collaboration will focus on five areas: e-commerce and new retail, City Brain projects, accessible financial services, smart logistics and culture and entertainment.al

In addition to being the historic gateway to the Silk Road, “Xian is an important part of the ‘Belt and Road’ initiative, and building our Silk Road headquarters [in the city] will help to expand Alibaba’s reach in the midwest, in addition to economic zones along the [modern-day] Silk Road,” added Zhong.

The Belt and Road Initiative, announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013, is an ambitious, US$90-billion infrastructure project to connect Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and Africa through global trade.

Earlier this year, Xian became the first city in China to have its entire subway system accept mobile payments via Alipay – passengers can pass through subway gates simply by scanning a QR code. Upcoming collaboration projects with Ant Financial, Alibaba’s related company and operator of Alipay, include allowing cabs throughout the city to receive payments using the digital wallet, as well as providing accessible credit and financing options to the thousands of small and midsized businesses based in Xian.

“With this agreement, Cainiao will work with Xian City to build a smart logistics hub for the northwestern region, which would serve the needs of the Belt and Road Initiative. Delivery speed in the midwest has a chance of becoming on par with eastern regions,” said Zhong.

Alibaba’s logistics arm, Cainiao Network, is expected to invest RMB1 billion in the logistics hub, which would house the unit’s cutting-edge technologies such as automated production lines, AGV robots and robotic arms. Constructions are slated to begin this year and to be put into use before the 11.11 Global Shopping Festival comes around in 2019.

  • Dunkin’ Donuts Unveils Next Generation Concept Store in the US

Dunkin’ Donuts Unveils Next Generation Concept Store in the US

Dunkin’ Donuts US has unveiled its next generation concept store – in the city where it opened its very first outlet 68 years ago.

The new store, in Quincy, Massachusetts, features what the brand describes as “a modern atmosphere” and new and innovative technologies and design elements – including the first drive-thru exclusively for mobile ordering.

The “On-the-Go drive-thru lane” allows members of the Dunkin’ Donuts loyalty program DD Perks who order ahead via a mobile app to bypass the ordering lane and merge straight into the line for the pickup window.

The interior design uses lighter colored materials, an open layout and natural light to create an approachable, positive and energetic environment.

And a new tap system has been designed to pour eight types of cold beverages such as coffees, iced teas, cold brew coffee and nitro-infused cold-brew coffee.

Later this year, Dunkin’ Donuts will introduce digital kiosks allowing customers to order with or without the help of a staff member, while a mobile pick-up area will allow DD Perks members to order ahead via an app, reducing the time waiting in-store.

New uniforms are also revealed in the Quincy store, including headwear designed in partnership with lifestyle brand Life is Good. Staff t-shirts feature slogans such as “Fuelled by Positive Energy,” and “Drink Coffee. Be Awesome”.

The new 2200sqft Quincy stores is located about 1.6km from the original Dunkin’ Donuts US location and is the first of 30 or more new and remodelled Dunkin’ Donuts US restaurants that will test variations of the new design this year.

The final Dunkin’ Donuts store design will be unveiled once testing is complete. The Quincy store is also one of a select number of restaurants testing new signage that refers to the brand simply as “Dunkin’.”

“The launch of our next generation concept store marks one of the most important moments in Dunkin’ Donuts’ growth as an on-the-go, beverage-led brand,” said Dave Hoffmann, president of Dunkin’ Donuts US and Canada. “We have worked closely with our franchisee community to create a positive, energetic atmosphere for our guests that remains true to our heritage, while emphasising and enhancing the unparalleled convenience, digital innovation and restaurant excellence that distinguishes Dunkin’. We are thrilled to begin the New Year with such an exciting milestone for our brand, and look forward to rolling out Dunkin’ Donuts’ store of the future to our guests in all of our communities.”

We have made good progress since our listing in July 2016, increasing our total number of restaurants by seven to 41 by end-January 2018. Although conditions have been less than favourable since we listed, we see some improvement in consumer sentiment. With the foundation that we have set, we believe that 2018 is a year with the potential for significant positive development for the Group.

We will continue to persevere and look ahead for further opportunities to raise our profile and market position in the region.”

The Group will continue to update the market as and when there are material developments to its business.

  • Fonterra launches new milk product with Hema Fresh

Fonterra launches new milk product with Hema Fresh

Hema Fresh is Alibaba’s new retail concept, which combines traditional shopping with a digital experience.

The new ‘Daily Fresh’ milk range is now available in Hema’s 14 stores in Shanghai and Suzhou in 750ml bottles, sourced from Fonterra’s farm hub in Hebei province.

The product has product labels to match each day of the week, which it says highlights and emphasizes freshness, with stock being replenished every night.

Initial volumes are currently around three metric tonnes daily, with plans to scale-up over time and expand with the retailer as it grows its footprint of stores across China.

    Increased income

President of Fonterra Greater China Christina Zhu said shoppers in China are becoming increasingly sophisticated in terms of their tastes and preferences, which are being driven by rising household incomes.

“More than ever before, consumers are consciously seeking products that are fresh, nutritious and safe, and our new product for Hema caters to this,” Zhu said.

According to figures from global management consulting company McKinsey, it is expected that more than 75% of China’s urban consumers will earn RMB 60,000 to 229,000 annually ($9,450 to $35,620) by 2022.

This is up from just 4% in 2000, prompting a shift in consumer behavior and purchasing power.

    The Hema model

Linked to this trend is the rise of Hema, which emerged in early 2016.

The shopping experience at Hema is driven by a downloadable app, through which customers can scan barcodes to get information on the product.  Food can also be picked, cooked by staff, and eaten in store.

The stores are also ‘fulfilment centers’ where customers can order online through the app, workers collect the items and they are delivered within 30 minutes within a 3km radius.

Hema is also linked to payment options, and is a membership club: the app personalizes shopping for the consumer based on previous purchases.

    Other products

In addition to the new fresh milk range, Anchor UHT milk products and the Anchor Dairy Foods range of butter, cream and cheese items are sold through Hema.

The retailer is also a foodservice customer, using Fonterra’s Anchor Food Professionals products in its in-store bakery.

Hema Fresh CEO and founder Hou Yi said the co-operation between the two companies is set to redefine the concept of fresh milk in the new retail era.

Zhu says the new product highlights how Fonterra’s business in China is leveraging its local milk pool, spread across three farming hubs.

“No other multinational dairy company in China has a local milk pool to draw from, so we are in an advantageous position,” said Zhu.

“This milestone with Hema is a sign of things to come and indicates that our push to shift more of our local milk into higher-yielding consumer and foodservice products is well-and-truly under way.”

    Reducing waste

While replenishing stock on a daily basis has the potential to lead to waste as it is replaced daily, a Fonterra spokesperson told DairyReporter the volumes are initially quite small, and the whole model of Hema is that everything is fresh, so the company would rather run out than have stock left over.

The spokesperson said, however, that sales have been going well, with the vast majority of bottles selling out each day.

“For any that are left over, that’s where the uniqueness of the Hema model comes into play to keep waste at an absolute minimum.

“As well as being styled like a grocery store, Hema also has a range of bakderies and restaurants in-store which can utilize surplus product that doesn’t sell on the day.”

  • Wakanui Grill Dining to open at Marina One

Wakanui Grill Dining to open at Marina One

New Zealand-themed restaurant Wakanui Grill Dining has opened its third international outlet – an 86-seat restaurant in a glass capsule on the fourth level of Marina One.

Singapore is the second territory for Wakanui following the concept’s launch in Tokyo by ANZCO Foods Japan in 2011 (it now has two restaurants there). Its feature dishes are New Zealand Ocean Beef and Wakanui Spring Lamb, both grilled over Japanese Binchotan charcoal in a central open kitchen.

Starters included clam soup, steamed green-lip New Zealand mussels, hot-smoked salmon, Kikorangi blue-cheese Caesar salad and Wakanui spring lamb chop. The company raises its lambs for about six months on lush pastures, with the mean being aged for around four weeks.

Other menu features include the Ito Wagyu Chef Creation, plus – a favourite with New Zealanders – Hokey Pokey ice cream with its crunchy confectionery pieces.

“Wakanui”, which is Maori for big canoe, is a rural centre in Canterbury, in New Zealand’s South Island.

  • New York-based Wolfgang’s Steakhouse expands in Philippines

New York-based Wolfgang’s Steakhouse expands in Philippines

Wolfgang’s Steakhouse has opened its second branch in the Philippines, at the new Podium Mall in the Ortigas Center, Mandaluyong.

And the president of the New York-based restaurant, Peter Zwiener, says a third branch is on its way.

Its first branch launched at Resorts World Manila in 2016, while the third branch will open in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, in June.

Local partner Raymund Magdaluyo says a restaurant is also being considered for Cebu.

He says the opening of the Podium restaurant is strategic because of the wide market of residential areas and company offices in the neighbourhood.

Compared to the 120-seat restaurant at Resorts World, the Podium branch can accommodate up to 70 diners.

Wolfgang’s also has branches in Japan (four), South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore and China. Zwiener says he is flying from the Philippines to Jakarta to investigate the possibility of opening a branch in Indonesia.

Other Asia expansion being considered includes Shanghai, Shenzhen and Taiwan.

  • Sip on the world’s first blue wine at a blue-themed cafe in Clementi

Sip on the world’s first blue wine at a blue-themed cafe in Clementi

Blue wine. Guess it’s a thing now. Gik is the Spanish company that made waves in the wine industry over a year ago with its new concoction, which blends red and white grapes with organic pigments and flavors, resulting in a sweet, blue-tinted wine that has intrigued some and outraged others.

Taste-wise, blue wine is said to be reminiscent of a cross between a wine cooler, a cocktail mixer, and juice. Obviously, it won’t really appeal to the snooty wine purist crowd, but if you’re rather liberal and adventurous when it comes to all things booze, perhaps you’d like to give it a go — if just for the ‘gram — ’cause it has finally made its way to our shores.

Besides ordering bottles online ($55 each)  — on the official Singapore site or retail platforms like RedMart — and hosting blue wine-fuelled parties, you can also sip on the unusual drink at Blue Willow, a new blue-themed cafe in Clementi.

Gik, a bright blue wine from Bierzo in northwest Spain made with red and white grapes.

Brought to you by the team behind Fresh Fruits Lab and Harry Potter cafe Platform 1094, the bistro serves up glasses ($13) of the blue beverage for those who simply want to sample it to understand the hype. Apparently, the menu also offers other blue-hued options such as blue carbonara with sous vide egg and rocket leaves, blue pancakes with blue maple sago, blueberries, and butterfly pea, and a dome-shaped mousse cake that’s — surprise, surprise — a shade of blue.

As for the blue wine itself, only time will tell whether it sticks around or winds up being just another novel millennial invention. Move over, pink rosé?
