    Coles posts $1 billion profit as customers demand value

    With inflation and cost-of-living pressures rising, Coles says its Dropped & Locked value campaigns and own brand offerings boosted sales in FY23.

    For the 52 weeks to June 25, sales from continuing and discontinued operations reached $41.5 billion – up 5.3 percent – while tax-paid profit rose to $1 billion.

    Supermarket sales reached $36.7 billion, up 6.1 percent, with online sales of $2.8 billion, up 1.1 percent as customer shopping behaviour normalized with the return to in-store shopping.

    Due to rising cost pressures, the Exclusive to Coles range delivered $12.4 billion in this financial year, up 9.6 percent.

    The sales growth was attributed to the retailer’s Dropped & Locked value campaigns and the successful execution of trade plans during Easter, Christmas, and Mother’s Day.

    Coles completed 46 store renewals and opened 17 new stores and closed six, taking the network to 846 supermarkets.

    Sales in Coles’ liquor division reached $3.6 billion driven by strong performance of the Liquourland banner. Online sales increased 22.6 percent to $203 million driven by on-demand delivery and express delivery through Uber Eats and DoorDash.

    The Ready-to-Drink category was the strongest performing segment with its Exclusive Liquor Brand sales increasing by 8.5 per cent for the year.

    Coles Group CEO, Leah Weckert, said the business is continuing to “invest, innovate and drive sustainable growth” since its demerger.

    “Cost of living is the number one focus for our customers right now and we continue to invest in providing value through ‘Dropped & Locked’, everyday trusted pricing, weekly specials, Flybuys and our exclusive brand portfolio.

    “These initiatives are resonating with customers and we remain well positioned to grow in the current environment as more customers choose to eat at home.”

    During the year, Michael Courtney was appointed CEO of Coles Liquor while Anna Croft became the chief commercial officer.

    Moving forward, the retailer says cost of living pressures “are likely to remain” for many Australian households and the business will continue to invest in its physical and digital footprint.

    WhatsApp is already one of the best messaging apps, but there’s always room for improvement. That’s why we’re getting new updates that bring important new features almost every month. Recently, the app added support for high-resolution photos and promised to bring support for HD videos very soon too.

    On top of that, we’ve just learned that WhatsApp is working on additional text formatting tools that will make communications easier and even more fun. The fine folks over at WabetaInfo spotted a brand-new feature in the latest beta version of WhatsApp, which indicated that Meta’s developers have started to implement new text formatting tools.

    There’s proof about three new text formatting options, which will be added on top of the already available italics, bold, strikethrough, and monospace options.

    The first one is called “Code Block” and is aimed at software developers and programmers who might want to send code snippets to their friends or colleagues. This particular text formatting tool will prevent the confusion created when code snippets were not being displayed accurately in the chat window.

    Another interesting text formatting tool, Quote, will receive a small yet important improvement. WhatsApp plans to introduce a new option that will allow users to highlight portions of a text that they want to quote. Currently, you can only quote entire messages, not parts of them.

    Last but not least, one of the latest beta versions of WhatsApp had a new formatting tool that allowed users to create lists of items. That will basically eliminate the need to manually add bullet points to every item that you want to be included in your list.

    The report mentions that these features are now in development, so it may take some time until WhatsApp actually releases them for everyone to use. Still, it’s nice to know what we’ll be getting in future updates, even if these new features won’t be available for a long time.

    Berjaya Corp acquires more shares in 7-Eleven Malaysia

    Berjaya Corporation Bhd’s subsidiary, Inter-Pacific Securities Sdn Bhd (IPS), acquired 16.80 million ordinary shares (equivalent to 1.51% equity interest) in 7-Eleven Malaysia Holdings Bhd (SEM) through direct transactions, for a cash consideration of approximately RM30.77 million.

    This brings the combined equity interest of BCorp and its subsidiaries in SEM to about 14.37%.

    The acquisitions were funded internally by IPS and have no expected material impact on BCorp group’s financials for the current fiscal year.

    Perfetti Van Melle, maker of Mentos, has partnered with Balco Brands to launch a candy-inspired air freshener range.

    Available in four fragrances: Grape, Mint, Strawberry, and Pineapple, the gel-based air freshener can be hung anywhere, with the scent lasting up to 30 days.

    Marta Ballesteros, global licensing manager at Perfetti Van Melle, said Balco Brands was able to grasp the value of its company’s icons, such as Mentos.

    “Our popular confectionery has been reinterpreted into a uniquely original and innovative air freshener gel that offers an amazing fruity and minty fragrance experience,” she added.

    “Sold in more than 130 countries, including here in Australia, there is no doubt Mentos is a much-loved brand.”

    Balco Brands’ brand director Kathryn Trivella, said the company set out to create fragrances that encapsulated Mentos’s fun and fresh attributes reminiscent of the candy.

    “Whether for car, home, or office, we are confident the innovative gel design and prominent branding will appeal to those who regularly purchase air fresheners and attract the many millions of us with an affinity to the Mentos candy!” said Trivella.

    The Mentos Air Freshener range is available for an RRP of $4 online and in Kmart stores nationwide.

    Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has asked relevant ministries to find solutions to Bamboo Airways’ issues on capital, transfer of shares to new investors, and its fleet expansion.

    The airline has recently faced many difficulties, especially in finance.

    In mid-July, it was rumored Bamboo Airways asked the government for bankruptcy protection, but the private airline denied this.

    In early July, Bamboo Airways sent the prime minister a report on its operation and difficulties.

    Chinh assigned the Ministry of Transport to maintain the airline’s operating conditions to ensure security and safety in civil aviation transport, and the Ministry of Finance to remove difficulties in transferring its shares to new investors.

    He also asked the Ministry of Planning and Investment to quickly appraise a proposal allowing Bamboo Airways to increase its fleet to more than 30 aircraft, because the lengthy process would slow down the airline’s recovery and development as well as reduce its business opportunities.

    In addition, he proposed the State Bank of Vietnam work with the airline to remove financial difficulties, facilitating commercial banks’ contribution of capital to the airline.

    The prime minister requested the ministries and the central bank to report the results of their troubleshooting before September 15.

    Google makes changes to its apps all the time and Maps is no exception to what seems to be an unwritten rule. Whether these changes are good or not for users, it remains to be determined. We can only hope that any anti-consumer decision will be rectified by the companies providing many of the services that we use.

    One of the important changes that will affect Google Maps for Android Auto in the not-so-distant future involves gas stations, which apparently will be removed for those who drive electric vehicles.

    Google has already confirmed the information, so expect this to be reflected in your Maps for Android Auto very soon. According to Google spokesperson Pearl Xu, “to help people get the most relevant information when navigating, last year we added the ability for EV drivers to see a shortcut for charging stations instead of gas stations on Google Maps for Android Auto.”

    The ability to see gas stations for EV drivers can be disabled in favor of the option to see charging stations since last year, but with the new change, Google Maps will no longer show gas stations as a category while navigating in an EV using Android Auto.

    If you’re using Google Maps for navigation purposes while driving an electric vehicle, you’ll soon notice that the top item will now show EV charging stations. In any case, here are some of the EV-specific features offered by the app, as highlighted by Google:

    • Real-time charging port availability: Just search for “ev charging stations” in Google Maps and you’ll see the real time availability of charging ports at nearby stations so you don’t have to wait in line.
    • Charging speed filters: The ‘very fast’ charging filter will help you easily find stations that have chargers of 150 kilowatts or higher. For many cars, this can give you enough power to fill up and get back on the road in less than 40 minutes. You can also use the “fast” chargers which will show you stations with chargers 50kW or higher.
    • Plug type filters: You can also filter for stations that offer your EV’s plug type so you only see stations with plugs that are compatible with your car.
    • Adding charging stops to trips: On any trip that’ll require a charging stop, Maps will suggest the best stop based on factors like current traffic, your charge level and expected energy consumption.
    • Charging stations in search results: We’ll also show you in search results when places like a supermarket have charging stations on-site. So, if you’re on your way to pick up groceries, you can more easily choose a store that also lets you charge your car there.

    The European Commission (EC) has announced the launch of anti-dumping and anti-subsidy tax investigations into cold-rolled stainless steel products imported from Vietnam.

    Vietnam exported 757,600 tons of rubber for over US$1 billion to China in the first seven months of this year, accounting for 99.8% of its total rubber exports.

    Vietnam is China’s second largest rubber supplier after Thailand.

    Its shipments to China were up 12% in volume but down 10% in value year-on-year. The price in July was $1,291 per ton, down 17.9%.

    The Ministry of Industry and Trade’s import-export department forecast rubber exports to China to keep rising in the next few months due to a steady increase in demand.

    The Chinese government has rolled out a series of policies to support the economy after post-pandemic recovery slowed down.

    Vietnam exported over 2.1 million tons of rubber worth $3.3 billion last year, up 9.7% in volume and 1% in value from 2021.

    Don Quijote reports record net profit driven by tax-free sales

    Pan Pacific International Holdings, the company that operates the Don Quijote discount chain, reported on Wednesday a net profit of 66.1 billion yen ($455 million) for the fiscal year ending June, hitting a record profit for the 14 consecutive year thanks to foreign tourist spending.

    Revenue reached 1.9 trillion yen, and operating profit was at 105 billion yen, crossing the 100 billion yen mark for the first time.

    PPIH said it has benefited from a recovery in spending by foreign tourists visiting Japan, accelerated by the depreciation of the yen and their enthusiasm for being freed from paying Japan’s 10% consumption tax on purchases of 5,000 yen or more, a benefit Don Quijote actively promotes.

    For the January-March quarter, the company had reported sales and operating profit at its discount store business have been rising steadily due to “increased demand for outings and recovery of inbound travel.”

    “We have strengthened the ‘power to earn,’” Naoki Yoshida, president and CEO, said at a news conference on Wednesday. He added that the company endeavors to gain strength in this new age of inflation, to devise strategies to increase unit price per customer spending and find new ways to get shoppers coming back more frequently.

    By nationality, South Koreans continue to lead the way in tax-free sales. For the January-March quarter, the company reported an increase in customers from Taiwan during the Chinese New Year string of holidays in late January.

    Now with China lifting its ban on group travel, sales are expected to rise even further, Yoshida said. For the year ending June 2024, the operator expects to make 80 billion yen in tax-free sales.

    PPIH has expanded into Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan and Hong Kong, where its stores are called Don Don Donki. Yoshida has mentioned that the company needs more time to reach higher profits overseas.

    The operator plans to add 12 more overseas locations and at least 25 in Japan.

    PPIH said it expects its operating profit margin to remain over 5% in fiscal 2024.

    “These results are positive signals, which are indicative of Central Retail’s further growth prospect in 2023, reaching its growth targets and driving up revenue by 12-15%.”

    AirAsia Philippines gears up for holiday season

    AirAsia Philippines is gearing up for the holiday season and expects a surge in air passenger traffic after the foreign traveler vaccine certificate requirement was lifted.

    The Department of Health Circular 2023-06 applies to all airports and seaports in the country and states that all arriving international travelers will be accepted regardless of their vaccination status. The circular took effect on Aug. 12, 2023, and follows the Transportation Department’s earlier announcement of the scrapping of face masks for public transportation.

    AirAsia spokesperson Steve Dailisan said the latest development is timely with the upcoming “Ber” months (referring to September, October, November and December), which are usually the busiest time for airlines and peak season for travel in the country.

    He said the lifting of the vaccine certificate travel requirement is a significant step towards making travel more seamless and will encourage travelers, regardless of their vaccination status, to experience the Philippines.
