7-Eleven Malaysia eyes 200 new stores next year

7-Eleven Malaysia Holdings Bhd is looking to expand the number of the convenience store chain outlets by at least 200 new stores next year. In 2017, 7-Eleven Malaysia opened 126 new stores. Berjaya Corp founder and executive chairman Tan Sri Vincent Tan Chee Yioun said 7-Eleven Malaysia is also looking at increasing the number of franchisees for stores in Malaysia, along with the expansion in the number of outlets.

7-Eleven Malaysia is the largest standalone convenience store chain nationwide with more than 2,250 outlets across the country.

Its wholly owned subsidiary 7-Eleven Malaysia Sdn Bhd today entered into a memorandum of agreement with Pertubuhan Tindakan Pejuang Wanita Dalam Sosial, Ekonomi, Rumahtangga Dan Ilmu (Tiangseri Malaysia) to provide an opportunity to those interested to be franchisees to enter the ecosystem.

Tiangseri is commissioned to recruit and recommend up to 50 potential franchisees to 7-Eleven Malaysia in the next 12 months.

This programme also bodes well with the company’s target of increasing the number of franchisees. The first store under the programme is expected to be opened next month.

7-Eleven Malaysia CEO Colin Harvey said the franchising programme through Tiangseri will see both partners leveraging on each other’s unique strengths and experience in retail and grassroots franchise recruitment.

“We are fully focused on this collaboration as we believe franchising is an integral part of our long-term corporate strategy of giving back to the local community that we operate in, as it will both provide and create important life and management skills in future entrepreneurs as well as providing more job opportunities to our local workforce.”

Harvey noted there are many potential locations for expansion, for instance in Sabah and around the Klang Valley. Meanwhile, Tiangseri president Mastura said the collaboration has already started generating interest from interested parties.

Tiangseri will also be aiding potential franchisees in securing funding at a preferential rate from agencies such as Perbadanan Usahawan Nasional Bhd and Majlis Amanah Rakyat, among others.

  • American Eagle Outfitters India to open 25 outlets in three years

American Eagle Outfitters India to open 25 outlets in three years

US-based mid-to-premium denim wear brand, American Eagle Outfitters entered India in the summer of 2018 through a licensing agreement with Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Ltd. The brand expects India will be its top three international markets in the next five years.

In an interview with IMAGES Retail, Guillermo La Rosa, Vice-President, International and Business Development, American Eagle Outfitters says, “Our brand has been in India for the past few months and it has been performing well. We are learning a lot about the Indian consumer as we plan to expand within the market and as we will get these learnings under our belt, it will help us grow and offer the right products to consumers.”

    Target Customers

American Eagle Outfitters is a leading global specialty retailer offering high-quality, on-trend clothing, accessories and personal care products at affordable prices.

The brand is betting big on Generation Z, who are between the age group of 15-25-year-old.

“India’s rapidly developing and vibrant economy, anchored by the world’s largest youth population, provides an exciting growth opportunity for our brands and expanding our global reach,” says La Rosa.

    Category Mix

The category mix of American Eagle Outfitters comprises of jeans, shorts, joggers, t-shirts, tops, woven shirts, sweatshirts, jackets and hoodies along with accessories like shoes, socks and belts.

Elaborating on this, La Rosa says, “The breadth of our assortment is global; however, the category mix varies from location to location. For example, in DLF Promenade, the penetration is around 60 percent men and 40 percent women products whereas in Mall of India, it is 50-50.”

In the Indian market, Denim is the Number 1 category for both men and women followed by other categories like woven shirts, polo shirts, fleece and sweaters.

“In India, there have been a lot of learnings for us, like in the women’s category, the customer prefers more of bootcut whereas outside India it is more about skinny and super skinny. Skinny and super skinny is little bit slower than what we had anticipated. Similarly, in the men’s category, slim and skinny are very important globally whereas here in India it is more of slim and straight denim. It seems like here in India the customer wants more clean-cut denims. We will continue with what the consumer wants as we grow,” he adds.

    Decoding the Store

The average size of the American Eagle Outfitters’ store spans across 2,500-3,500 sq. ft. in India.

According to La Rosa, the store size of the brand in India is smaller as compared to that in the US. “In the US the store size ranges from 4,500 sq. ft. to 10,000 sq. ft.,” he says.

Despite the smaller spaces, the brand is hoping to launch more stores in more cities soon. Apart from this, the brand will also launch bigger flagship outlets.

“We are looking forward to opening more flagship stores in key cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru and these stores will be bigger than the average store. In addition to this, after the launch of Aerie in India, we expect to have bigger stores,” he adds.

Aerie is a lingerie retailer and intimate apparel sub-brand owned by American Eagle Outfitters. In the US, Aerie targets the 15- to 25-year-old female demographic.

    Expansion Plans

At present, the brand has three operational stores spread across Delhi-NCR and Chandigarh. Apart from this, it is available through its own website and also on fashion portal Myntra.

“By this year-end, we are looking to open six to nine more outlets. In the next three years, we are looking at a total of 25 locations. For some of the new stores, we have got locations in Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Mumbai, Delhi and we are also exploring other options,” La Rosa reveals.

“We are not here to be in every single mall and exploit the brand. We want to be very meticulous and calculative in the partnerships that we have with malls. We will be launching the Mumbai outlet in the upcoming months,” he adds.

The brand may also look at having a presence through multi-brand stores and in Tier II markets in the future. It will also open Aerie stores across India in partnership with the Aditya Birla Group.

“We believe that in the next five years India could emerge as the top three markets outside the US,” La Rosa asserts.

American Eagle Outfitters merchandise also is available at more than 190 international locations operated by licensees in 24 countries.

LOL launches digitally customisable fashion platform Cozmic Lab

Malaysian apparel brand LOL has launched an innovation platform called Cozmic Lab. The concept is a collaboration between LOL and Brother, an international printing and imaging technology brand. “Moving beyond the ready-to-wear apparels, Cozmic Lab offers customers an exciting, cost-efficient and environmentally friendly avenue to co-create or customise their own apparel,” said Joey Chong Yan Kit, CEO of Super Gem Resources, the parent of LOL.

Using digital technology, customers are able to select the apparel’s design, quality, quantity, types and location to collect the final product. And budding entrepreneurs are invited to create their own fashion products using Cozmic Lab.

“We are bringing a unique blend of fashion and technology to LOL fans,” said Chong.

“Blending fashion and technology is a global trend and being a fashion-forward brand, LOL believes that Cosmic Lab is a powerful way for us to connect to our customers and engage them through a distinct, innovative and customisable way to shop and experience our brand.

“Cozmic Lab is also revolutionising the way fashion retail brands do business; we are inviting other entrepreneurs to use the platform to create their very own range of products,” Chong added.

    Exclusive collaborations

Cozmic Lab has a series of designer and international brand collaborations to enable customers to create apparel unlike anything currently available at LOL. Iconic characters and brands like Doraemon, Peanuts, Sega’s Sonic and Nasa will be among more than 200 visuals customers can choose from – and people can also upload their own creation.

The Brother digital garment printer takes just one minute to print one item of apparel. Selected footwear and accessories can be custom printed as well.

Cozmic Lab is available now at the LOL store in IOI City Mall in Putrajaya, and will be opening at LOL stores in Sunway Pyramid, Sunway Velocity, Berjaya Times Square and Paradigm Mall Johor Bahru, this month.

Fast-growing LOL was founded in November 2015 as a joint venture between Superb Apparel Supply and Parkson Retail Asia. In June this year, the founders acquired Parkson’s 70 per cent stake in the company.

Currently, LOL has more than 200 employees and 15 stores across Malaysia, including 10 in the Klang Valley, two in Johor Bahru, two in Sarawak and one in Melaka. It plans to open five more next year, most in the Klang Valley.

  • Convenience stores a haven for most Saigon youth

Convenience stores a haven for most Saigon youth

Increasing numbers of Saigon residents are visiting convenience stores, and most of the youth hangout there. A survey by market research firm Q&Me in December found 80 percent of Saigon residents saying they patronize convenience stores. Of these, 61 percent are youth who also hangout in the stores, using in their eat-in space, attracted primarily by the air-conditioning.

Fifty-four percent of customers said they use the eat-in space because it is a good place to stay for a short time, while 51 percent said they come for the wifi, said the survey, which polled 500 people aged 16-39 online and 721 visitors at 110 convenience stores in Ho Chi Minh City.

The majority, 63 percent, of eat-in space customers are estimated to be in their 20s. Those in their 30s account for 16 percent, and teenagers, 15 percent.

Those who age in their 40s and 50s account for only two percent of eat-in space users.

Forty-four percent of customers use the eat-in space to drink, and 38 percent to eat and drink. Popular activities are chatting with friends, using their mobile phones and relaxing.

The most popular foods at eat-in spaces are snacks, instant cup noodles and single customer hotpot. Instant cup noodles are popular during lunch and dinner time, while snacks are taken irrespective of timing.

The eat-in space is most occupied during lunch time, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m, with half of the seats taken, on average. The period between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. also sees a high occupation rate of 33-37 percent.

The survey found VinMart+ has the highest number of stores at 805, followed by Circle K with 261 and Family Mart with 160.

Family Mart is the most popular store with 87 percent of respondents saying they have visited it earlier and 12 percent said they recognized it.

VinMart+ comes next with 84 percent participants visiting and 15 percent recognizing, while the figures for Circle K are 76 percent and 17 percent, respectively.

The least popular stores are Shop & Go, 7 Eleven and GS25. Forty-two percent of respondents said they recognized Seven Eleven but have never visited a store. This ratio is 36 percent for GS25 and 30 percent for Shop & Go.

The number of convenience stores in Vietnam has increased by 21 percent year-on-year to 1,819 as of May, the survey found. Most of them are based in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

A previous report by market research firm Nielsen Vietnam had said that Vietnamese people have been going to convenience stores more often in recent years. It said that an average Vietnamese shopper make 4.5 trips a month to convenience stores this year, three times that of 2010.

Since 2012, the number of convenience stores in the country has nearly quadrupled, Nielsen said.

  • 7-Eleven tests facial-recognition technology

    7-Eleven tests facial-recognition technology

7-Eleven Japan has opened an experimental concept store in Tokyo offering payment through facial-recognition technology developed by NEC. The trial is a precursor to a planned rollout of unmanned convenience stores in locations such as office buildings, car parks and factories allowing consumers to purchase essential items where it may not be commercially viable to operate a full-scale staffed store.

The test store is located inside a building which is home to companies from the NEC group and can be accessed only by employees.

Facial-recognition technology identifies shoppers when they enter the store and again when they make payment. The cost of purchases is deducted from their salaries.

Rival retail groups including Aeon and FamilyMart have already adopted self-service payment checkouts and Lawson is trialling a scheme using barcodes scanned by smartphones.

  • MAHB’s record profits come at a cost to the Malaysian economy and tourism

MAHB’s record profits come at a cost to the Malaysian economy and tourism

Against a backdrop of a challenging economy and falling profitability in corporate Malaysia, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) won a major Malaysian award last week, topping billion ringgit companies for giving its shareholders the best three-year returns in its class.

MAHB’s net profit more than tripled in 2017 to RM237 million from RM73 million in 2016 – itself nearly double from RM40 million in 2015 – and it is set to break yet another record this year.

In the write-up that accompanied the award, the sharp increase in profits was attributed to two reasons: an increase in Passenger Service Charge (PSC) and growth in passenger numbers coming through its airports.

The write-up unabashedly stated that MAHB owed its vastly improved performance to its structural dominance and described MAHB as a structural monopoly.

Kudos to MAHB. But then, it is not difficult to keep showing such numbers when you are a monopoly.

Nevertheless, unjustified price increases, such as the PSC hike imposed by MAHB, will lead to unintended consequences when its clients, who have no choice but to use its services, are eventually squeezed out of business. Then, everything will collapse – Malaysia’s tourism arrivals, billions in tourism receipts and revenues to MAHB’s own coffers (a fact it has failed to acknowledge).

MAHB rewards itself with excessive monopoly profits, yet it provides the Malaysian public with embarrassingly low service levels.

AirAsia X Malaysia CEO Benyamin Ismail said, “In addition to the RM50 PSC it already imposes, MAHB is now demanding an additional RM23 from each passenger travelling through klia2. The millions of passengers departing from klia2, more than 90 percent of whom fly with AirAsia, will attest to the long walks they have had to endure to reach their gates in what is a passenger-unfriendly airport with inferior facilities yet unjustified high charges.

“Furthermore, since klia2 opened, there have been constant flight disruptions and cancellations due to major apron and runway defects, unscheduled closure of runways, ponding of water on the best of days and fuel pipeline ruptures.

“We were sued after we refused to collect the extra RM23 that MAHB has imposed for the sole benefit of its shareholders. We will vigorously fight this suit. We will not be part of this scheme to burden the travelling public by making them pay more for below par services.”

Benyamin added that while the operating results of klia2 itself were not immediately apparent, AirAsia estimates that MAHB’s returns on capital are well in excess of the level of the cost of capital set by regulators.

AirAsia Malaysia CEO Riad Asmat said, “The overall tourism sector, one of Malaysia’s biggest revenue earners, and the interests of millions of Malaysians who have been able to fly because of the low fares pioneered by AirAsia, are being threatened by MAHB’s price hikes. We urge the regulators and policy makers to rebuff this unfair and unreasonable attempt by MAHB to use its monopoly to enrich itself further by revisiting and rescinding the decision to raise the PSC.

“MAHB has argued it needs more profits to operate smaller loss-making airports on behalf of the government, but it is obvious from its exponential growth in profits over the last three years – even after taking into account losses in its Turkish operations – that this is not the case.

“The additional RM23 to be collected will amount to more than RM100 million a year that will go straight to MAHB’s bottom line rather than to the government. MAHB will continue to be among the most profitable Malaysian companies for many years to come. But this will come at a cost to the wider Malaysian economy and at the expense of engines of growth such as AirAsia and AirAsia X.”

Riad also referred to MAHB’s defence of its decision to charge the extra RM23 in PSC from each travelling passenger, saying it is “bound by Article 15 of the Chicago Convention of 1944.”

“This would almost be laughable if it were not so serious. MAHB is falling back on a convention ratified in 1944, when Japan still ruled Malaya and when Frank Whittle was testing the jet engine and when only the well-heeled could fly.

“For all these reasons, we shall not accede to MAHB’s demands and we will take our battle both to the people and to the court of law.”

By September 2018, our team had successfully transported 24 heavy-lift units by hydraulic conventional trailers, including 17 units over 100 MT each.

Located in Central Asia, Uzbekistan is one of only two landlocked countries in the world surrounded by five countries, namely, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. This makes Uzbekistan one of the most difficult areas to transport cargoes. The port of discharge selected by Bolloré Logistics varied from one time to another as there was no standard transportation route. Depending on the port of loading & discharge, weight, dimensions, transit time, and cost efficiency, Bolloré Logistics Japan provided the best transportation route and mode for Mitsubishi Corporation.

The heaviest unit, an Ammonia Converter, registered at 422 tons and the widest and tallest unit, a Package Boiler, recorded at LWH (mm) 12,700 x 8,700 x 10,720 – making history as those were the heaviest and tallest cargoes handled in Uzbekistan.

The scope of work included Free On Board (FOB) from various ports of loading to Navoiy’s site, together with import customs clearance formalities.

Timely arrangement of breakbulk vessel, Volga-Don class sea river vessel or barge, road permits, conventional hydraulic trailers and more were requested from our team in order to meet the construction schedule’s deadline with all the requirements.

As for the heaviest and most voluminous cargoes, Bolloré Logistics visited the vendor’s factories several times prior to the breakbulk shipments and physically checked the cargo figures, lifting points, lashing points, to successfully design the transportation plan accordingly.

But the most challenging part remained the inland transportation from the Caspian Sea port to the job site.
First of all, the distance from the Caspian Sea port to the job site is around 1,700 km. These days, most cases of heavy lifts are handled by self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT), just for short distances only, but in our case it was transported by conventional hydraulic trailers, for 1,700 km. As 1,700 km is a long journey, Bolloré Logistics Japan had to anticipate unexpected trouble on the way and prepare a backup plan, while respecting the construction schedule.

Road surveys were carried out several times and we decided to adopt the safest transportation route. However, it was still not enough as infrastructures were limited and could not withstand transportation of such heavy and voluminous cargo; it therefore had to be improved.

As a result, Bolloré Logistics improved 24 bridges (including the construction of a new bridge and installation of new piles on another bridge), constructed 15 bypass roads (including two long ones), expanded five corners, replaced electric poles at one place, and widened roads at four points.

Yet, it was still not enough. During the transportation of heavy lifts cargo, Bolloré Logistics mobilized construction machinery teams such as dump trucks, road rollers, wheel loaders, etc., in order to improve unpaved road temporarily. We also mobilized an electrical team such as cherry pickers, mobile cranes to shut down / remove power cables and other overhead obstacles.

Thanks to Mitsubishi Corporation’s full cooperation and Bolloré Logistics’ team effort; we were able to meet the cargo readiness in accordance with heavy lift transportation schedule and unloading heavy lifts on time at the site.

Not only will these counters help tourists in making better decisions about visiting Thailand, the amount of amount refuned back to them will potentially be spent on additional purchases in Thailand. Consequently, it would help boost our economy. I can see this initiative having positive influence on the number of Thailand-bound tourists – more by volume and frequency,” Charnchai stated.

The initiative of establishing VAT refund counters directly impacts the tourism industry on multiple levels: 1. Amount of retained money which tourists have spent after receiving VAT refund helps small retailers and businesses, which, in turn, strengthens Thailand’s economy; 2. The growth in sales volume and sales value is proportional to the rate of economic growth and revenue from tourist spending; 3. A significant decline in VAT refund at Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang Airport reflects positive a sign of service improvement; 4. VAT refund for tourists promotes better opportunities for local retail shops to generate more sales.
