Telstra adds SD-WAN to Programmable Network

Australian operator Telstra has expanded the capability of its Telstra Programmable Network service with the introduction of a software-defined WAN (SD-WAN) and virtual branch.

In partnership with VeloCloud, an SD-WAN provider based in the US, Telstra has introduced the ability for businesses to shift their branch network to the cloud. Telstra announced an investment in VeloCloud through its Telstra Ventures subsidiary in March.

Business customers can achieve the migration by deploying a  single Juniper Networks Universal CPE device on site and using a marketplace of virtual network functions to self-provision bandwidth and required services.

“Cloud adoption continues to grow and new WAN architectures such as Hybrid and SD-WAN are rapidly evolving. We are unlocking this technology for our customers who depend on having the fastest and most highly available digital experiences possible,” Telstra Global Products executive director Michelle Bendschneider said.

“Businesses need to constantly adjust in a rapidly evolving technical world, so we really looked at this release from a customer’s perspective with flexibility front of mind. The addition of SD-WAN provides a more intelligent layer to that flexibility, enabling customers to do more with their network as they digitally transform their business and scale and deploy additional applications when and where they need to.”

She said Telstra plans to offer both VeloCloud SD-WAN as a virtual network function and SD-WAN as a more traditional physical solution in recognition of the fact that there is no one sized fixed all approach to business networks.

The Telstra Programmable Network is available in over 30 countries in Asia, EMEA and North America.

  • Debenhams kicks off at St Collins Lane

Debenhams kicks off at St Collins Lane

British retailer Debenhams has kicked off in the Australian market, today launching its first local department store at St Collins Lane in Melbourne.

The heritage name said it has taken a deliberate shift away from the traditional department store format in Australia and will offer exclusive brands in a small-format layout – across two storeys and 3600sqm – which represents a new concept specifically developed for the Australian market and draws on over two centuries of experience.

“Debenhams St Collins Lane is not a traditional department store – it is a new destination for the contemporary customer in Australia,” said Graham Dean, managing director of Debenhams Australia.

“Our research shows that a Debenhams customer wants to not only enjoy the latest seasonal trends, but find the right item at the right time, and always have our store at their fingertips.

“They are also frustrated by traditional department stores with limited assistance on the floor, confusing layouts and unnecessary waiting times.

“We will complement world-class service and in-store services such as a style suite, beauty rooms, mobile POS and a café, with a new Debenhams Australia mobile app that will provide a better experience and ensure we are always there, where-ever and whenever our customers need us.”

Dean told Inside Retail that the UK brand has curated a bespoke merchandising mix to the Melbourne demographic, both in mix and format.

“We’re not a traditional department store in the way that you would view a David Jones, Myer, or indeed a Debenhams back in the UK. This is a new format, new proposition to market. A curated offer with majority exclusive products.”

The smaller format is an aspect that the head office in the UK will be monitoring closely, with key executives set to see first-hand how the store is performing while in town attending the upcoming Melbourne Cup.

“They definitely see this as the way of the future for department stores and super keen to see how it trades.”

The offering will include an extensive collection of women’s and men’s apparel, sleepwear and intimates, athleisure, accessories and contemporary homewares, along with established beauty and fragrance brands including the likes of MAC, Tom Ford, Bobbi Brown, Gucci, Chloe and Valentino.

The Designers at Debenhams collection for women and men will offer exclusive brands not available anywhere else in Australia and feature J by Jasper Conran, Star by Julien Macdonald, Nine by Savannah Miller, Butterfly by Matthew Williamson and Kate Middleton favourite, No. 1 Jenny Packham.

Debenhams St Collins Lane will join a portfolio of 243 Debenhams stores across 28 countries worldwide, and supports the retailer’s Debenhams Redesigned global strategy launched in early 2017 to drive the business forward.

The store will anchor the new St Collins Lane retail precinct, in a popular area of the Melbourne CBD considered by many to be the city’s traditional home of fashion and beauty.

“The opening of Debenhams St Collins Lane is an evolution of our success with the Australian market, with online sales to Australia already the largest outside of the United Kingdom,” Mr Dean said.

“There are more than 840,000 people in the Melbourne CBD every day and more than 2.2 million international visitors to the city each year, many of whom would have already been a customer in one of our Debenhams stores around the world.

“We have a track record of getting retail right, and we are confident in this new offering for Australia.”

  • Australia’s Retail Food Group to target China

Australia’s Retail Food Group to target China

Australian-headquartered food and beverage retailer Retail Food Group says it will focus on greater China for its next phase of growth.

RFG is Australia’s largest multi-brand retail food franchise owner, developer and manager, with a network of more than 2500 outlets across 12 brands and 81 territories. RFG CEO international, Mike Gilbert, says the company plans to introduce a selection of its coffee-based retail food brands to Chinese consumers.

“We’re excited to replicate our successful Australian operations in the Chinese market and accelerate the growth of brands like Gloria Jean’s Coffees, Donut King, Crust Gourmet Pizza Bar, Brumby’s Bakery, Michel’s Patisserie, Pizza Capers Gourmet Kitchen, Cafe2U and It’s A Grind in the region,” he said.

The company also owns the BB’s Cafe, Esquires, The Coffee Guy franchise systems and the premium Di Bella Coffee Co brand.

Gilbert says RFG’s international expansion model is based on recruiting master franchise partners who purchase a license to develop a certain brand system in a defined territory, and provides the company and local partners with the opportunity to forge sustainable alliances.

A key strategy driving the group’s global growth is its hub network, which provides a platform for fast-tracking coffee and brand system expansion in international markets, whilst also more efficiently servicing the company’s existing markets.

RFG is developing a Middle East hub next year which it believes will help it expand quickly through the MENA region, whilst enabling the group to more efficiently service and grow brands  in the Gulf.

“We currently have hubs in Australia, New Zealand and the US, and plans for the Middle East underway, and will be looking to replicate them in Asia and Europe,” said Gilbert.

AirAsia flight returns to Perth after mid-air scare

An AirAsia Indonesia flight has been forced to turn back to Australia after pilots were alerted to a possible loss of cabin pressure, airport officials say. Flight QZ535, bound for the Indonesian island of Bali, changed course about 25 minutes after take-off on Sunday.

The Airbus A320, carrying 151 people, landed safely at Perth Airport. AirAsia said the flight experienced a “technical issue”. Australian media said it had appeared to lose altitude.

“We were all pretty much saying goodbye to each other. It was really upsetting,” one passenger told the local Nine network.

A video taken on the plane, broadcast by local media, shows oxygen masks hanging from the ceiling and one person shouting “passengers get down, passengers get down”.

Another passenger, Claire Askew, told that “panic was escalated” by airline staff who were screaming and appeared to be in tears.

In a statement, AirAsia said it was “fully committed” to the safety of passengers. It did not elaborate on the problem.

“AirAsia apologises to passengers for any inconvenience caused,” the statement said.

In June, an AirAsia X flight on its way to Bali was also forced to turn back to Perth after an engine problem left it “shaking like a washing machine”.

In December 2014, an AirAsia plane crashed into the Java Sea, killing all 162 people on board after the aircraft’s rudder control system malfunctioned during the flight.

  • Pizza chain’s customers complain of data breach

Pizza chain’s customers complain of data breach

Customers of pizza chain Domino’s Australia are complaining their personal data has been leaked, prompting eerie personalised emails from scammers.

Many took to social media to complain about phishing emails addressing them by their first names and mentioning where they live.

But Domino’s insists there’s been no “unauthorised access” to its systems, although it is investigating a potential issue with a former supplier.

“It was a bit eery (sic) getting all these spam emails that somehow knew my name and suburb and initially were making it past the spam filter,” Mitchell Dale posted on Domino’s Facebook page.

“The decision to try to keep me in the dark and not announce what had happened is why I will not be ordering Dominos again.”

“Nothing better than waking up finding out your data has been breached,” Dylan James posted on Facebook.

“Why haven’t you informed anyone yet?”

In an undated statement on its website, Domino’s Australia said there was no evidence to suggest there had been unauthorised access to its systems.

“We are investigating a potential issue with a former supplier’s systems that may have led to a number of customer email addresses, names and store suburbs (related to pizza orders) being accessed,” it said.

“Domino’s acted quickly to contain the information when it became aware of the issue and has commenced a detailed review process.”

The company did not say when it first became aware of the issue and insists no financial information has been accessed.

  • Sussan Retail Group hones in on revitalised hub

Sussan Retail Group hones in on revitalised hub

The Sussan Retail Group will open a Sportsgirl outlet at Centre Road, Bentleigh in Melbourne, adding to its retail footprint on the revitalised strip that is attracting national tenants.

The group, which already has its Sussan and Suzanne Grae stores on the road, has secured a five-year lease at over $80,000 per annum.

Mark Talbot, Fitzroys division director, who secured the lease said there has been a string of national tenants seeking to lease prime retail spaces in the strip with Suzanne’s store openings representing a counter move to the perceived challenges of the current retail climate.

“The renewal of the area around the train station and level crossing has seen traffic and pedestrian flows improved, and they see the project underpinning the growth of the strip in the long-term,” Talbot said.

Talbot added that’s why the Sussan Retail Group chose the precinct for their new store as they see Centre Road as an established, secure, highly sought after location.

Sportsgirl is expected to open ahead of the crucial Christmas trading period.

According to Talbot, the growing number of residential projects around the area had further bolstered the immediate catchment of the strip, also creating further demand for food and hospitality services.

Talbot said he has also just leased a nearby premises to cult burger restaurant and food truck Mr Burger, which has opened as the group’s first concept store with a new menu.

It is also its first permanent location in Melbourne’s bayside region, which Talbot said again pointed to the security and high regard for the retail road.

Fitzroys’ Walk the Strip report shows it is the more recent revolution of medium density mixed-use retail and residential developments that has further accentuated the extended trading cycles of centres such as Centre Road, Bentleigh and added to their vibrancy.

Extended trading hours, social advancement and changes in entertainment trends and lifestyle choices have seen a proliferation of food and beverage outlets in the area, encompassing cafes, restaurants, take-aways or licenced premises.

The Mr Burger lease was also struck at over $80,000 per annum.

Optus satellite, a subsidiary of major Australian operator Optus, has announced its first foray into providing satellite services over the National Broadband Network (NBN), via a partnership with Southern Phone.

The partners are now providing Sky Muster satellite broadband services to customers in regional and rural areas.

NBN plans to use satellite broadband services for the roughly 3% of the of the population – mostly in rural and remote areas – that won’t be covered by fixed line or fixed wireless NBN services.

Southern Phone is a regional telecommunications service provider based in New South Wales. The company’s managing director David Joss noted that only 80,000 of the expected 240,000 Sky Muster satellite broadband services have been connected to date, leaving a significant potential market.

“We see this service as a viable and effective alternative to a traditional NBN connection. For some consumers, this will be the first time they’ve been able to connect to a broadband service,” Optus Satellite VP Paul Sheridan added.

“This new partnership will help us connect with even more regional customers and importantly, make sure that those customers are able to have the same level of support that a customer in a metro area would.”

  • Australia new vehicle sales dip in September, commercial still strong

Australia new vehicle sales dip in September, commercial still strong

Australian new vehicle sales took a dip in September after a run of record months, though continued strength in the commercial sector augured well for business spending in the economy.

The Australian Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries’ VFACTS report out on Wednesday showed 100,200 new vehicles were sold in September, down 2.4 percent on the same month last year. Both months had the same number of selling days.

Sales for the year to date were still running 0.2 percent ahead of the same period in 2016.

Sales of passenger cars extended their long decline with a fall of 9.3 percent in September, and even the red-hot sports utilities sector took a breather with a dip of 1.3 percent.

Yet demand for commercial vehicles showed no signs of waning with the light sector up 8.1 percent and heavy vehicles jumping 15.4 percent on September last year.

Toyota Motor Corp retained first place on the sales ladder with a reduced share of 17.3 percent of the market, while Mazda Motor Corp made a strong showing by taking an unusually high 10.3 percent.

Hyundai Motor held third spot with 8.1 percent, followed by Mitsubishi at 7.1 percent. The Holden unit of General Motors trailed with 6.9 percent, ahead of Ford at 6.8 percent.

Sephora opens 12th Aussie location at Central Coast

Global beauty retailer Sephora has today opened a new store today at Erina Fair, the company’s 12th Australian retail location, and seventh New South Wales store.

Continuing their investment in brick-and-mortar stores, Sephora’s country manager, Libby Amelia, said “freedom to experience” is at the core of the cosmetics chain’s model.

“After almost three years in the market our core customers know all about our exclusive brands like Tarte, Marc Jacobs Beauty, Fenty Beauty, Kat Von D and Huda, but with an ever-increasing list of new makeup, skincare, hair care and lifestyle brands, we know our customers are crying out for the opportunity to touch, play experience our brands, products and services too,”Amelia said.

“We want our customers to be able to come into our stores whenever they like, for as long as they like,” she said. “You can touch and feel and play – being left to your own devices, or you can ask one of our experienced Beauty Advisors to guide you.”

Stephen Ross, centre manager, said adding Sephora to Erina’s mix meant consumers “no longer have to travel outside the region to get their beauty fix of Sephora’s brands”.

The global chain recently opened in concept stores in Spain and France, hinting at the LVMH-owned cosmetics retailer’s future design direction.

Vodafone Australia to roll out Massive MIMO from 2018

Vodafone Australia has joined rival Optus is testing massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology, and plans to start rolling it out from 2018.

The operator announced a recent successful trial of Massive MIMO in the 1800-MHz FDD band.

The trial, conducted with Huawei in a suburb of Sydney, used 20 MHz of 1800-MHz spectrum to achieve a peak cell throughput of 717Mbps across eight simultaneous devices.

Vodafone revealed plans to roll out its FDD Massive MIMO technology to selected mobile sites during 2018.

“This week’s demonstration is another significant step towards 5G, following our live 5G trial last year which saw speeds of up to 5Gbps,” Vodafone GM of technology strategy Easwaren Siva said.

“When it is rolled out in an area, FDD Massive MIMO will give the Vodafone network multiple-fold increase in capacity, delivering a consistently high quality network experience, even in times of high usage.”

Rival Optus last week announced plans to start rolling out Massive MIMO on its mobile network at the end of the year, after completing trials in June that combined Massive MIMO with three carrier aggregation. This trial was also conducted with Huawei.

  • Huawei to deploy gigabit network for Brisbane Skytower

Huawei to deploy gigabit network for Brisbane Skytower

Honeywell and Huawei, are deploying a gigabit network and a Passive Optical LAN (POL) solution for the Brisbane Skytower in Australia.

Brisbane Skytower is a landmark building under construction in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Located in Brisbane’s central business district, this iconic residential tower will become Brisbane’s tallest building when completed in 2018/2019.

Honeywell will provide Skytower with its Enterprise Buildings Integrator, a building automation system that takes charge of system integration, covering the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning, security protection facilities, etc.

Additionally, Honeywell will centrally manage various building sub-systems, provide a visualized management portal and alarm management and work-order management services, designed to deliver efficient facility management, fast response, and predictive maintenance.

Huawei will meanwhile deliver the gigabit network to achieve smart network inside the Skytower. In contrast to a traditional complex LAN which limits the performance of bandwidth-intensive applications, using POL technology, an enterprise can combine data, voice, video, and other weak-current systems into one optical network.

Huawei’s solution will bear all services through a single fiber that will be upgradable to 10G PON while reusing existing cables.

Prominent features include high bandwidth, high reliability, comprehensive security authentication, easy deployment and Wi-Fi coverage.

“We’re excited to work with Huawei to build a gigabit network for Skytower, Brisbane’s iconic 270-meter, 90-story residential tower. The network is the first-ever installation to utilize one common fiber optic cable for telephony/data and building services,” Honeywell Building Solutions executive GM Mark Dunn said.
