    iPhone 15 sales top $42M on opening day

    Sales of the newly released iPhone model surpassed the VND1-trillion (US$42 million) mark for a second year in a row, despite the economic downturn.

    The iPhone 15 came to Vietnam on Sept. 29, the first time the country was included in Apple’s second round of sales a week after starting in markets like the U.S., India, Singapore, Japan, and Thailand.

    Most Vietnamese retailers said sales were “much better than expected” in what has been a gloomy year for the phone market.

    The Gioi Di Dong sold more than 15,000 for worth VND500 billion, accounting for nearly 50% of the market.

    Other retailers such as FPT Shop, CellPhoneS, ShopDunk, and Hoang Ha Mobile reported sales of 2,000-7,000 each.

    In all, according to statistics from an importer, on Sept. 29 alone, 35,000 iPhone 15s worth more than VND1 trillion were delivered to customers. The phones were sold out within hours.

    FPT Shop did not disclose revenues for the full day, but merely said over 5,000 devices worth VND150 billion were delivered just after midnight.

    CellphoneS delivered 1,500 phones in the first two hours.

    The most popular variant, also the most expensive, has been the Pro Max, which accounted for 50-70% of sales.

    But their sales were 10-20% from last year due to the smaller supply but also because consumers have started to pay more attention to the two regular versions with their eye-catching colors and nearly similar features, according to a CellPhoneS executive.

    Most retailers sold out the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max in natural titanium color.

    Users only have a choice between blue and black for the 1 TB version. Meanwhile, the 15 and 15 Plus had better sales than their predecessors though the most popular color, pink, is also in short supply.

    Overall, sales on the first day were lower than last year, when the iPhone 14 fetched VND1.5 trillion.

    A Hoang Ha Mobile executive said the number of devices allocated to the country by Apple was not as high as last year.

    The color options were also low, leading to the most popular models soon selling out, he said.

    Retailers still have iPhone 15 devices in stock, mostly the regular versions and less popular colors like black.

    An iPhone 15 Pro Max brought from overseas is now sold at around VND40 million (US$1,650) in Vietnam, down 20% in three days.

    Smartphone shops in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City on September 26 offered the VND40 million price for 256GB storage option. Higher storage options of 512GB and 1TB cost VND45 million and VND58 million, respectively.

    Traders queued up to buy the product at Apple stores in Singapore and Thailand and brought them to Vietnam unofficially.

    The first ones were available on Friday last week, one week before they are sold officially in Vietnam, at prices around VND70 million, or nearly 50% higher than official prices in Vietnam.

    Nguyen Hieu, owner of an unofficial Apple shop in Hanoi, said that he had anticipated the drop in prices this year as the iPhone is sold in Vietnam only one week later than Apple’s tier-1 markets, compared to several weeks in previous years.

    He only bought 20 iPhone 15s to sell in the last three days.

    Retail chains are reporting a shortage of the most expensive option, the iPhone 15 Pro Max, due to high demand from preorders.

    Customers will have to wait until the end of October for more supply, retailers said.

    Intel gets confidence boost from anonymous customer pre-paying for 18A production

    Last week, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger reiterated his goal for Intel to take foundry leadership from TSMC by 2025. The executive said, “We’re 2.5 years into the transformation. Now, it’s gone the way I would have expected at the time in terms of rebuilding the company. You have to be much less skeptical about our ability to pull this off.” Intel not only had to watch as TSMC took its foundry leadership away, but it also saw TSMC’s largest customer, Apple, replace its Intel chips with M-series chips built by TSMC.
    During last week’s Deutsche Bank conference, Gelsinger stated that the 18A node will return process leadership to Intel. That node would be considered 1.8nm while TSMC and Samsung would be shipping at 2nm during the same time. The CEO also let it be known that Intel has received a large prepayment from a customer for Intel’s 18A capacity. This gives Intel the confidence to believe it is on the right track and will lead the company to speed up the build-out of 18A fabs.
    In the long term, Intel sees the contract foundry business as its biggest opportunity. One interesting comment made by Gelsinger is that Intel knows TSMC’s wafer costs, ASPs, and targets. With this knowledge, he says that Intel wants lower costs than TSMC to win business from the global foundry leader. He says that Intel is trying to get its internal cost structure in line with TSMC. To this end, Intel will study its metrics such as headcount per wafer start, and use more AI/Machine Learning to improve efficiency.
    Intel is still relying on TSMC to build parts of its next-generation ‘Meteor Lake’ chips. While Intel will use its Intel 4 node (7nm) to build the chip’s CPU tile, the GPU tile will use TSMC’s 5nm node. The chip’s SoC tile, an ultra-low-power tile that supports media, imaging, display, and the connection to memory, will be built on TSMC’s 6nm node as will the chip’s I/O Extender tile.
    As Tech journalist Leo Waldock notes in a post on X, “All that could be correct yet it still seems weird to me that Intel is buying tiles from TSMC for its own products while touting foundry services to 3rd parties. Eat your own dog food, no?”
    Will Intel make TSMC and Samsung Foundry squirm? Will Apple stay loyal to TSMC? Will geopolitical rumblings make TSMC customers worried enough to bring their business to another foundry? These are questions that we will have to wait to answer.

    Samsung reportedly delays its extended reality device up to six months because of Apple

    Samsung has delayed production of its mixed reality AR/VR headset until sometime in the middle of 2024. And you can put the blame for the delay squarely on Apple and its Vision Pro AR/VR headset, uh, excuse me, spatial computer. An internal Samsung memo cited by SBS Biz says, “…we decided to review all internal specifications and performance, such as the design and panel of the new XR (extended reality) product.”
    So why is Samsung taking its mixed-reality headset back to the drawing board? Apparently, Sammy was so impressed by Apple’s Vision Pro presentation at WWDC that it decided that some design changes and other revisions were in order. Among the changes that Samsung is expected to make include the addition of higher resolution displays and the use of faster chips to improve performance. Samsung plans on equipping the device with a Snapdragon chip and Google is developing the operating system which will most likely be based on Android.
    Samsung has reportedly informed its panel suppliers of the delay. Originally, test production of the headset was to start at the end of this year with mass production of Samsung’s XR device scheduled to start in early 2024. Now we are looking at a three to six-month delay that could result in mass production of the product starting around the middle of this year.
    The delay does prove that Samsung’s target here is Apple and its $3499 Vision Pro, not Meta and the upcoming Quest 3. Samsung’s decision to revise its XR device to make it even better might not only have to do with what Samsung saw in the Vision Pro preview but could also be a decision based on the trouble Apple is having producing the Vision Pro. Where Apple originally hoped to build one million units of the device this year, the actual number of units produced could be under 400,000 according to a recent Financial Times report.
    This shortfall might give Samsung an incentive to design a device that is more likely to compete against the Vision Pro and satisfy early adapters who won’t be able to find the Vision Pro after its release. Based on the report out of South Korea, it seems that even Samsung believes that the only way it can compete with Apple’s spatial computer is to improve its own product before it is released.

    Intel exec lauds Vietnam chip autonomy ambition

    Chip autonomy is an ideal aspiration but it is advisable to avoid setting too big goals in the immediate future, an Intel Products Vietnam executive has told the government.

    In 2006, the U.S. chipmaker became the first foreign high-tech investor in Ho Chi Minh City.

    “The past 17 years have been a miraculous journey,” Kim Huat Ooi, vice president and general manager of Intel Products Vietnam, said.

    “Vietnam has transformed and become much more prosperous. Foreign investors coming here all want to have a foothold and a solid launch pad in Vietnam.”

    A number of other major chip manufacturers too have set up plants in Vietnam, forming an open semiconductor supply chain.

    Some local technology companies such as FPT and Viettel are also investing in the sector, and hope to export large volumes of “Made in Vietnam” chips.

    In April Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh assigned the Ministry of Planning and Investment with developing a program for electronic chip production.

    Vietnam’s advantage

    Kim, who has nearly 40 years of experience in the semiconductor field, said when Intel entered Vietnam it had to import most raw materials, but now over 200 local suppliers were working with the plant, helping create a closed process for chip autonomy.

    “It is completely right that the Vietnamese Government and companies think big and are ambitious to be self-sufficient in chip sources. Some companies have designed very good microcontrollers for specific applications. Vietnam will have a big opportunity to make more chips.”

    Before it set up the plant in Vietnam, Intel was invited by many other countries in the neighborhood. One of the important reasons for Intel choosing to build the plant in Ho Chi Minh City was the stability of the Vietnamese political system.

    During the Covid pandemic, many supply chains around the world were broken, but the Intel Vietnam factory was still operating smoothly.

    In 2021, its exports surged by 25% from the pre-pandemic period.

    Vietnam remained stable even in the most challenging periods.

    “It can be seen that in future local supply chains will gradually form and be able to operate independently. As the amount of high-tech investment increases, production costs will decrease, bringing more opportunities for domestic enterprises.

    “The Vietnamese government can use this to accelerate its ambition to produce chips.”

    It was right to dream big but it was also necessary to avoid being too ambitious to invest in non-optimal areas and waste money.

    Each country should focus on areas where it had an advantage instead of spreading itself too thin. Chip production was resource-intensive.

    Local companies also needed to design chips appropriate for their actual capabilities and needs, he said.

    Another challenge was human resources since the chip industry required great technical and technological capability to cope with new problems.

    “If we look at the current education system in Vietnam, we are seeing that resources are mainly focused on bachelor’s training. To enter the chip industry, more researchers in post-graduate programs are needed.

    “To design chips, engineers need a lot of R&D skills.”

    However, though investing in human resources required time and money, it was definitely profitable in the long run.

    For this, Vietnam needed the right talent, and for this tertiary education should have new curriculums.

    Intel and other large foreign enterprises in Vietnam also paid special attention to linking up with universities to improve curriculums and foster talent.

    “Seventeen years ago we entered Vietnam and started looking for the first basic workers. Now our plant has continuously sent Vietnamese engineers to the U.S. to work and develop specialized technologies. Initiatives by local talent have been patented in the U.S., making an important contribution to improving the plant’s performance.”

    Besides manpower, special attention should be paid to infrastructure and traffic, like dealing with the electricity shortages in some parts in June.

    The shortage had been solved, but in the long term investors would need specific plans to ensure reliable power availability.

    After the pandemic many neighboring countries had come up with incentives to get major international investors to come and set up supply chains.

    Vietnam too should have appropriate policies to retain existing investors and attract new ones.

    “The world is changing. Many countries are emerging, attracting large investors back. In Vietnam, we are doing well. Intel wants to continue to invest and contribute to Vietnamese society.”

    Poor demand drags MacBook prices down

    Apple’s MacBook Pro laptops have seen their prices tumble by tens of millions of dong (VND1 million = $42.6) in the two months amid underwhelming demand.

    Quy Thien, a video editor, said when the MacBook Pro 16-inch was released in Vietnam at the end of March, he ordered a high-end model with an M2 Max chip, 96 GB RAM, and 4 TB storage for VND149 million (US$6,400).

    But Apple dealers told him the model was not available, but would arrive in two months. When his device arrived, he checked the prices and found it had fallen to VND133 million.

    “In two months, I lost VND16 million when I hadn’t even received my device,” he said.

    A retailer explained that the MacBook Pro is a niche product due to its high price. Dealers do not stock some high-end models, and users have to order and wait for six to 12 weeks. Thus, early buyers got a bad break since prices started to fall as they waited, he said. Even the standard version has become cheaper.

    At the time of launch the 14-inch version with 16 GB RAM, 512 GB storage and an M2 Pro chip cost VND52.9 million, and the 16-inch version cost VND65.9 million. If they had M2 Max chips, the prices were VND81.9 million and VND92.9 million.

    In the next two months retailers slashed the prices of the 14-inch model by VND5 million if it had an M2 Pro chip and VND8 million if it had an M2 Max chip.

    However, it has not worked and sales have not picked up, and the MacBook Pro only accounts for 2-3% of total laptop sales.

    Hoang Ha Mobile said the high prices are the biggest dampener of demand.

    Other Apple laptops have also become cheaper.

    The MacBook Air M1, which used to be the best-selling laptop in Vietnam, currently costs VND17.9 million, VND11 million down since its launch in January 2021.

    The MacBook Air M2’s prices have fluctuated. At the end of April its price briefly went down from VND28 million to VND25.9 million before climbing back up at the beginning of May.

    Vietnam third top chip exporter to the US

    Vietnam accounted for 10% of semiconductor chip exports to the U.S. in the 12 months ending this February, ranking third after Malaysia and Taiwan.

    The Vietnam chip industry’s revenue from the U.S. market rose by 74.9% during the period, from $321.7 million in February 2022 to $562.5 million this February, according to a report by the Ministry of Information and Communications.

    Vietnam is also among the countries with the highest growth rate of chip exports to the U.S., alongside Thailand, India and Cambodia.

    Cambodian chip exports to the U.S. grew in value 7-fold over the period, from $20.8 million to $166.3 million, while Indian revenues from the market grew 34-fold to $152 million in February.

    In February, semiconductor chip export orders to the U.S. reached $4.86 billion, up 17% year-on-year. Among those, chips made in Asia accounted for 83%.

    Bloomberg reported that the U.S. is diversifying its electronics supply chain by reducing the share of chip imports from Malaysia, a longtime powerhouse in chip packaging, alongside moving its iPhone production chain out of China.

    At a government meeting in April, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh assigned the Ministry of Planning and Investment the tasks of improving the National Innovation Center, and developing a chip production program.

    Experts believe Vietnam has the potential to be a global center of chip production if it can utilize its advantages and implement effective strategies, policies, and incentives for the sector.

    Intel’s Asia Pacific and Japan General Manager Steve Long told VnExpress last year: “Vietnam can establish the necessary infrastructure and policies to support cutting-edge chip manufacturing.”

    Electronics retailers have cut laptop prices by millions of dong (VND 1 million = $42.62) this year, but have been unable to spur sales as consumers remain wary of spending.

    The price of a MacBook Air M1 was cut by VND3 million since early January to VND17.9 million (US$758.5) in April. It is down by VND11 million since its launch in January 2021.

    The prices of newer Apple laptops like the MacBook Air M2 have also fallen quickly, coming down within seven months of launch from VND32.9 million to VND26.4 million now.

    The manager of an Apple distributor said prices had to be slashed to cut inventories and ensure cash flows.

    The inventory in the market is equivalent to 8-12 months of sales, according to the manager.

    Laptops sales were high in the first four months of 2022, with MacBook Air M1 accounting for more than 50% of revenues.

    But this year, consumers have tightened their purse strings, causing the market to plunge, the manager said.

    Laptops running on Windows have also seen prices decline.

    Electronics retail chain The Gioi Di Dong has cut the prices of Chuwi LarkBook X N5100 to VND5.7 million from VND12.8 million and MSI Gaming GE66 Raider 11UH i7 to VND38 million from VND78 million.

    Retailers said profits from laptops were down 40-50% year-on-year in the first four months.

    According to Nguyen Lac Huy, the manager of a CellphoneS store, retailers have had to slash laptop prices due to high interest rates, abundant supply, low cash flows, and weak demand.

    The leading PC distribution company manager said most people bought laptops and desktops in 2021-22 when they needed them to work or study online during Covid.

    Now, especially with the economic downturn, they are no longer buying new devices, he said.

    According to research firms Gartner and IDC, global computer shipments fell by 30% in the first quarter to usual levels as life returned to normal after the pandemic.

    According to Bao Viet Securities Company, the laptop segment’s profit in the first quarter of 2023 it decreased by 39.1% year-on-year.

    It forecast sales to drop further in the second quarter, rise sharply in the third and decrease slightly in the fourth.

    iPhone imports cost Vietnam US$1.61 billion last year, equivalent to 46% of all phone imports.

    According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, total imports were up 10.5% to $3.5 billion, with Samsung, Oppo, and Xiaomi accounting for most of the rest.

    Samsung imports cost $940 million, and that of Oppo, $442 million.

    Almost $18 worth of components were also imported, and South Korea and China accounted for 93% of phone and part imports.

    Many Apple distributors said the more expensive an iPhone model, the higher the demand.

    According to the ministry, some 210.5 million phones worth VND663.7 trillion were manufactured in Vietnam last year, down 9.1% in volume but up 15.1% in value.

    Exports fetched the country $33.32 billion, with Samsung alone accounting for $31.42 billion.

    Taiwan’s Apple supplier Quanta plans Vietnam factory

    Apple supplier Quanta Computer plans to set up a factory in northern Vietnam, the Vietnamese government said.

    The company, a MacBook contract manufacturer, on Friday signed an agreement with the authorities of Nam Dinh Province, 90 km (56 miles) south of Hanoi, to construct the facility at an industrial park there, the government said in a statement late on Friday.

    The facility, which would be Quanta’s 9th factory globally, would initially cover an area of 22.5 hectares, the statement said, without giving its capacity nor a time frame for the construction.

    Local media said on Saturday Quanta would invest $120 million in the factory.

    The prices of iPhone 14 in Vietnam, which are already among the lowest in the world, will continue decreasing in the coming time, market observers said.

    “In April, Apple authorized resellers will have to import a new batch of iPhones according to their commitments to Apple. To lower inventory, slashing prices is the best way,” said a reseller.

    Officially launched in the country on Oct. 14, 2022, the iPhone 14 Pro Max version originally sold for VND34 million ($1,440).

    Only half a year later, the price dropped by more than VND7 million, the fastest rate of price decline since iPhone smartphones were first officially sold in Vietnam in 2014.

    Prices of some other iPhone 14 versions also decreased sharply.

    “The iPhone price war is always going on, but never as fierce as now. This is the first time the price of Apple’s latest phone model has dropped so steeply after only half a year,” said Phung Phuong, a manager of smartphone retail chain Di Dong Viet.

    According to a large electronics retailer, there are two reasons for the current price race.

    Firstly, Apple has not yet fixed a price range in Vietnam, so local dealers set their own selling prices according to actual needs and market situations.

    Large stores often sell Apple smartphones at prices VND1-2 million higher than smaller ones, but still attract customers due to their wide coverage, good reputation, and better after-sales services.

    Meanwhile, smaller stores must accept low profits, slashing prices to compete with bigger ones.

    Secondly, at the beginning of 2023, demand for smartphones started diving, but Apple authorized resellers still imported a large number of products to receive sales incentives from Apple.

    Inventory is now too high, forcing resellers to lower prices to make cash flows run smoothly.

    “Big retailers are slashing selling prices, so small and medium ones have to follow suit to keep their market shares,” said Nguyen Lac Huy, a manager at smartphone retail chain CellphoneS.

    The iPhone 14 was rolled out in Vietnam in October last year. While the Pro and Pro Max versions sold out within a few months, sales of the iPhone 14 and Plus versions have been sluggish.

    Retailers said the combined sales of the two models account for less than 5% of the total.

    Vietnamese electronics retailers are buying back the Galaxy Z Fold, which sold for VND50 million (US$2.092) when it was launched in 2019, at an 88% reduction from the original price.

    Ever since Samsung’s new Galaxy S23 went on sale in Vietnam on Feb. 17, retailers have launched trade-in programs, encouraging users to buy the new model.

    Galaxy Z Fold phones are being bought back at prices of VND0.43-6.1 million per unit depending on their condition.

    The Galaxy S10+, another high-end Samsung model which went on sale in 2019 with a price tag of VND28.9 million, is being bought back for VND2.9 million.

    According to Nguyen Lac Huy, manager of electronics chain CellphoneS, prices of most Android smartphones fall faster than those of iPhone models. After six months of use, the price of an Android phone plunges by 40-50%.

    The main reason is that manufacturers often offer discounts on Android phones after launch, while the cost of repairing them is high.

    Apple has sharply reduced the size of the order it has with TSMC

    Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd., better known as TSMC, is the world’s largest foundry. Only TSMC and Samsung currently mass-produce chips using their respective 3nm process nodes (which use different types of transistors, as we will explain later). Apple is TSMC’s largest customer and is believed to account for a quarter of the company’s revenue (that’s 25% for you numerical types).

    With the overall weakness of the global economy and the hangover from last year’s chip shortage, some major brands have been canceling orders placed earlier with TSMC. And believe it or not, that goes for Apple as well. You know that we often cite Twitter tipsters and check out social media posts from Weibo writers for the sake of alliteration. Weibo is a Chinese social media site and one subscriber, whose user name translates to something like @CellPhoneChipExpert posted some big Apple news.

    The tipster, who allegedly gets news directly from the semiconductor industry, says that Apple has reduced its orders with TSMC by as many as 120,000 wafers. The canceled orders were for chips that would be made using TSMC’s N7, N5, N4, and even some N3 nodes. Rumors call for the A17 Bionic, which is expected to be found under the hoods of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Ultra, to be produced using TSMC’s N3 (3nm) process node. Apple’s M2 Ultra and M3 chips might also use the same node.

    Digitimes reports that TSMC has been able to beat out Samsung Foundry when it comes to signing up customers. Samsung’s 3nm node uses Gate-All-Around (GAA) transistors that allow the gate to come into contact with the channel on all sides resulting in less current leakage and higher drive current compared to the FinFET transistors used by TSMC for its 3nm node. GAA features vertically placed horizontal nanosheets while FinFET uses horizontally placed vertical “fins.” TSMC is expected to go to GAA for its 2nm production in 2025-2026.

    Despite sticking with FinFET for 3nm production, TSMC still has a pretty full-order book with big names like Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Nvidia reserving production capacity for 2023 and 2024. Samsung, though, has been handicapped in its efforts to secure more business due to low yields. That means that a higher percentage of the chips it cuts from wafers fail to pass quality control.

    The report says that in order to give Apple most of the 3nm production capacity later this year, Intel agreed to change its roadmap and delay receipt of its 3nm orders. TSMC’s enhanced 3nm process node (N3E) could be launched this year even though there might not be a big rush for orders considering the cost.

    Digitimes points out that wafer prices have skyrocketed with 90nm wafers selling for about $2,000 in 2004. By 2016, 10nm wafers cost $6,000 and that price hit $16,000 for 5nm which debuted on consumer electronics in 2020. Wafer prices for 3nm chips are priced in the $20,000 area.

    Intel has said that it will take process leadership from TSMC and Samsung by 2025 thanks to two developments. It will use RibbonFET transistors which is another term for the Gate-All-Around (GAA) transistors already employed by Samsung. And it will use a feature known as PowerVia or backside power delivery. This allows transistors to obtain power from one side of a chip while using the other side to connect to data communication links.

    Today’s chip designs have transistors trying to handle both functions from the same side which makes the process more complicated and limits the use of miniaturization. Intel will also be the first to use high numeric aperture Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography (EUV). This machine will etch higher-resolution circuitry patterns on wafers which could reduce the time it takes to add additional features to a pattern.

    Low demand has driven iPhone 14 prices in Vietnam to the second lowest levels in the world after only the U.S. According to German data portal Statista, the price starts at US$799 in the U.S. while authorized Apple resellers in Vietnam sell it at VND19.7 million ($834.7).

    “The iPhone 14 is not popular, and so stores are selling them at close to import prices to recover capital,” said Thanh Son, the owner of a mobile phone showroom in HCMC’s District 1.

    But in other Asian markets, the prices are higher. They start at VND22.3 million in Singapore, VND20.7 million in Hong Kong, and VND23 million in Thailand.

    In Vietnam, the prices of two high-end models, 14 Pro, and 14 Pro Max, are only VND1 million lower than in the U.S.

    The iPhone 14 Pro Max costs VND28 million, down VND3.5 million within just one month. “This is an unexpected development because in previous years, it was not until June or July that iPhone prices fell steeply,” Nguyen Lac Huy, a manager at retail chain CellPhoneS, said.

    Unlike at the end of last year, the supply of iPhone 14s is now abundant, so people can choose colors and capacities.

    Nguyen Minh Khue, a manager at another retail chain, Viettel Store, said the prices of the entire iPhone 14 range were recently cut by up to VND2 million due to the falling demand and increasing supply.

    Some other Apple products are also among the cheapest in the world in Vietnam. An iPad 9 starts at VND7.5 million and a MacBook Air M1 at VND19.9 million, while in the second cheapest market, Hong Kong, the latter still sells at VND23.4 million.
