  • Papa John’s Plans Major Indian Comeback: 650 Outlets In Next Decade Despite Market Challenges

Papa John’s Plans Major Indian Comeback: 650 Outlets In Next Decade Despite Market Challenges

Papa John’s International, a leading American pizza chain, has announced its intentions to re-establish its presence in India by October. The company has set an ambitious goal of opening 650 outlets across the nation within the next 10 years, despite the challenging landscape in which fast-food businesses find it difficult to maintain sustained sales growth.

Papa John’s, ranking third worldwide in terms of pizza delivery, withdrew from the Indian market in 2017 due to unsatisfactory performance. However, this move parallels that of its American competitor, Little Caesars. The latter made its debut in India earlier in the year, with a plan to inaugurate approximately 100 establishments by the end of the decade.

    Re-entering the Indian Market

The first Papa John’s outlet in the country is set to open in the southern city of Bengaluru, according to Vish Narain, managing partner at Pulsar Capital. This Indian investment firm, in association with the UAE-based PJP Investments Group, will serve as the joint master franchisees of Papa John’s in India.

The pizza giant announced its plans to return to this intricate market back in April 2023. This decision comes at a time when fast-food chains are dealing with declining sales in India. Urban consumers, who form the primary customer demographic, are scaling back on expenditures due to sluggish wage growth and the burden of rising competition.

Devyani International, one of the two Pizza Hut franchisees in India, is responding to this trend by shutting down underperforming outlets. Simultaneously, Sapphire Foods India, a smaller operator, is exercising caution with their expansion strategies.

    The Competitive Landscape

The hurdle of competition is not one to be taken lightly. Papa John’s will have to contend with Domino’s Pizza, which boasts over 2,200 Indian outlets, Pizza Hut with around 950 stores, and upscale chains such as Pizza Bakery and PizzaExpress.

However, Pulsar Capital seems optimistic about India’s long-term potential, mirroring the stance of consumer-facing companies like Hindustan Unilever, the maker of Dove soap, and brewery giant Heineken. Both companies continue to invest in India, banking on its massive population of 1.4 billion.

“The fast-food category is under-penetrated, so we are many years away from saturation,” said Narain.

Papa John’s aims to modify its pizza to cater to local taste preferences while also offering its signature dishes. This strategy aligns with the practices of other fast-food competitors. For instance, KFC offers a paneer zinger burger, Domino’s serves a chicken tikka pie, and Subway has a potato-patty sandwich on its menu.

    Questions & Answers

When is Papa John’s planning to re-enter the Indian market?
Papa John’s plans to re-establish its presence in India by October.

Which city will be home to the first new Papa John’s outlet in India?
The first new Papa John’s outlet in India will be opened in the southern city of Bengaluru.

What is the projected number of Papa John’s outlets in India over the next decade?
The company aims to open 650 outlets in India over the next ten years.

  • Dodo Pizza, the fastest-growing chain, closes its outlets in Ho Chi Minh City.

Dodo Pizza, the fastest-growing chain, closes its outlets in Ho Chi Minh City.

In a surprising twist within the competitive pizza landscape of Vietnam, Dodo Pizza, once hailed as the fastest-growing pizza chain globally, has announced the closure of all four of its outlets in Ho Chi Minh City. The final day of operations is set for May 26, marking the end of a four-year venture in the city.

In a Facebook update, the company attributed its decision to “various factors and a new strategic direction.” Following the closures, Dodo Pizza will maintain only one location, situated in Binh Phuoc Province, approximately 120 kilometers away from the bustling city.

Dodo Pizza achieved remarkable recognition in 2021 when U.S.-based food market research firm Technomic praised it as the “fastest-growing pizza chain in the world.” When it first entered the Vietnamese market, the chain identified the region as brimming with potential, particularly due to its expanding middle class. Today, Dodo Pizza operates over 1,300 outlets across 24 countries and reported a revenue increase of 19% last year, reaching a substantial US$1.2 billion.

In its quest for growth, the company is actively exploring strategic partnerships, targeting national franchisees and multi-unit operators in markets such as the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and South America. However, the Vietnamese food and beverage scene, especially the pizza segment, remains fiercely competitive, with numerous domestic and international brands vying for customer attention. Major players include local favorite Pizza 4P’s, highly recognized American franchises like Pizza Hut and Domino’s Pizza, and Thailand’s The Pizza Company, alongside a host of European and Australian brands.

The Vietnamese pizza market, valued at $780 million in 2024, is on a growth trajectory, projected to reach $1.1 billion by 2033, according to IMARC Group. As consumer demand for quick and convenient dining rises amid increasingly hectic lifestyles, pizzas are not only a staple in dedicated restaurants but are also making their way onto the menus of an expanding array of hotels and eateries.

In a landscape where everyone is fighting for the pizza crown, Dodo Pizza’s retreat raises intriguing questions about the resilience of brands in hotly contested markets.

    Questions & Answers

The company cited “various factors and a new strategic direction” for the closures.

How many Dodo Pizza locations will remain open in Vietnam?
After the closures, Dodo Pizza will have just one remaining location in Binh Phuoc Province.

What is the current state of the pizza market in Vietnam?
The Vietnamese pizza market is highly competitive and is projected to grow from $780 million in 2024 to $1.1 billion by 2033, driven by rising demand for convenient dining options.

Domino’s Pizza China (DPC Dash) plans to open about 300 new locations this year after its store count reached 1000 late last year.

DPC Dash recorded 240 net new stores last year, meeting its annual target as part of the “Go Deeper, Go Broader” strategy. In 2025 and 2026, the chain plans to open approximately 300 and 350 new stores, respectively.

Store performance was also encouraging, with same-store sales growth remaining positive in the fourth quarter. This also marked the 30th consecutive quarter of positive comparables since the current management took over in 2017.

Pizza 4P’s opens its first store in Japan

Vietnam-based artisan pizza business Pizza 4P’s has launched its first store in Japan, its second international expansion after Cambodia in 2021.

Located in Tokyo, the store was designed by architecture firm Studio Dig and features handcrafted tiling with an earthy vibe and soft-form furniture. It’s lighting design and natural fibre cushions also provide a soft accent, symbolising the idea of “Earth to People – Oneness”.

Following the Japan launch, Pizza 4P’s plans to open its first store in Bengaluru, India. The brand formally announced its debut on social media channels and began recruiting in October.

Last year, Ho Chi Minh City-headquartered investment fund Mekong Capital sold its stake in the fast-growing pizza company. The business did not say who it sold the shares to or what its return on investment was in the company.

  • Domino’s Pizza hits 1000 store milestone in Japan

Domino’s Pizza hits 1000 store milestone in Japan

Domino’s Pizza Enterprises (DPE) has reached a mega 1000 stores in Japan. This milestone makes the Japanese market the largest by store footprint for DPE. It is also the third largest Domino’s market outside of the US, after India and the UK.

Domino’s entered the Japanese market in 1985 and DE bought a majority stake in 2013.

Four years later the Aussie-based business acquired the remaining 25 percent.

DE group CEO and managing director Don Mei reflected on the majority investment a decade ago.

“We knew Japan was an opportunity like no other, but pizza purchasing behaviour was quite different to our other market.”

Pizza was viewed as a premium, occasion product rather than an everyday purchase.

“At the time, Domino’s only operated in 17 of Japan’s 47 prefectures and only 43 of its 259 stores were franchised. We could see we had extremely experienced operators, but without the means to grow,” Meij said.

Today local franchisees own and operate more than half (626) of the stores. APAC CEO Josh Kilimnik said “We’re seeing more store managers wanting to franchise and more franchisees wanting to become multi-unit franchisees.”

An official ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the milestone event. The opening of the 100th store at Koto Furuishiba in Tokyo was attended by Mei and Kilimnik, along with the CEO of Domino’s Pizza Japan Martin Steenks and Domino’s Pizza Japan founder Ernest M Higa.

“Reaching 1,000 stores is a very significant milestone, not only for Japan, but for Domino’s globally,” Meij said.

“The team in Japan are continually inspiring us all with what’s possible – whether it’s raising the bar in operational excellence or creating some of the most exciting menu innovations on the planet. They have become true world leaders.”

Kilimnik, who served as Domino’s Japan CEO and president between 2018 and 2022, commented on the key drivers of the business.

He pointed to a revitalised menu with premium pizzas alongside a value offer, the implementation of a dynamic online ordering system, and investment in people.

Domino’s Japan CEO Martin Steenks said the goal is to be the number one pizza company across all of Japan’s 47 prefectures. Currently it has the biggest store count in 30 prefectures.

Steenks said.”We are very confident we will be celebrating 2,000 stores in Japan within the next decade.”

  • Domino’s app has a new feature that will deliver pizza to places without an address

Domino’s app has a new feature that will deliver pizza to places without an address

So let’s say you’re at a nondescript park playing in a pick-up softball game and after the game is over, you want to reward your teammates by ordering a few pizza pies. However, there is a little problem. The park you’re at doesn’t have a name and there isn’t an address for it that you know of. Well, if you order your pizza from the Domino’s app, you’re still okay even if you don’t have an address to accompany your order.
That’s because Domino’s Pizza announced today a new feature called Pinpoint Delivery that when selected as a delivery option on the Domino’s app will allow the user to drop a pin on a map. This will allow the world’s largest pizza company to deliver a Pizza to a park (like our example), a baseball field (also part of our example), the beach, a pool, a campfire and other locations. If you don’t mind sharing your pizza with seagulls, this could prove to be a great idea.

Christopher Thomas-Moore, Domino’s senior vice president – chief digital officer, said, “Domino’s is proud to be the first quick-service restaurant brand in the U.S. to deliver food to customers with the drop of a pin. We’re always striving to make customers’ experiences even better and more convenient, and Domino’s Pinpoint Delivery does exactly that.” The Pinpoint Delivery feature allows Domino’s to deliver to “a countless number of dynamically created hyper-local spots without a typical address.”

While using this feature, consumers will still be able to track their order using Domino’s Tracker, see the GPS location of the driver, and have an ESTPA (estimated time of pizza arrival). When the driver arrives at the pickup spot, the customer will receive an alert. After the alert is received, the customer will activate a visual signal on his phone to help the driver spot him.
Domino’s says “Domino’s Pinpoint locations are delivery locations without traditional addresses selected by customers who order online, pre-pay with credit, debit, or Domino’s gift cards, and agree to receive up to five text notifications that provide updates on their order. Customers and delivery experts will meet at specific locations designated in the Domino’s app that may be adjacent to places like parks, baseball fields, and beaches. Message and data rates may apply.”
So the next time you’re lying on a towel at the beach and you get a message from your stomach that it wants you to order a pizza, using the Domino’s app and Pinpoint Delivery can make it happen. You can download the Domino’s app for iOS by tapping on this link, or for your Android phone by clicking on this link.
