Siam Center Unleashed the Creativity in “Siam Center Art Traction” Art Exhibition

Siam Center, the Ideopolis, sparks the creative ideas in “Siam Center Art Traction”, on the 1st and 2nd floor of Siam Center until July 2016. The exhibition displays a wide range of well-selected art pieces by several artists from various fields of art, such as world-renowned Malaysian artists Jun Ong, well-known Thai artists like Jitsing Somboon, Anon Pairot and Rukkit Kuanhawate, and young artists from four leading universities in Thailand. Last but not least, the art lovers will meet Mr. P Water, the art installation by Propaganda.

Chanisa Kaewruen, Senior Deputy Managing Director for Marketing Events and Business Relations, Siam Piwat Co., Ltd., revealed that Siam Center has played the leading role as the center of arts, fashion, technology and lifestyle. It always seeks for the world-class work of art to inspire people. Now, Siam Center is hosting Siam Center Art Traction between June and July 2016 to display the masterpieces of famous artists in different fields. The exhibition starts with Jun Ong and his PLASTIC PARTITIONS, using mixed art to serve as the board of idea. It displays questions and let the visitors give comments by pressing the button on LED screen, which projects the different levels of brightness. When the visitor presses the button three times, the blinking light will appear. It means the visitor absolutely agrees with the question. If pressed twice, the button will show the still light, which means the visitor simply agrees. If pressed once, the button will project the dim light, which represents the visitor’s disagreement.

    11. Artpiece from Museum road selected by Jitsing Somboon

Two more exhibitions are held to promote the talent of students from the leading universities. First, Jewelry Degree Showcase by Silpakorn University displays the theses of senior students of Jewelry Design Department, Faculty of Decorative Arts, Silpakorn University. Moreover, the art workshops are weekly conducted on cold enamel, wire bending, drawing, gold leaf covering, knitting, crochet, stamping letters on metal plate and making wool accessories respectively. This exhibition will take place until July 31, 2016, at the area connected to BTS on the 2nd floor of Siam Center. Live Design Functional Art Project by Silpakorn University exhibits the theses of the senior students of Applied Art Study, Faculty of Decorative Arts, Silpakorn University, between June 23 and July 31, 2016, on the 1st floor of Siam Center.

Another must-visit exhibition is “Museum road selected by Jitsing Somboon”, which takes place until July 31, 2016, on the 1st floor of Siam Center. Jitsing Somboon, Creative Consultant of Greyhound, selected these impressive items from the fashion theses of senior students from four leading universities, namely Silpakorn University, Srinakharinwirot University, Rangsit University and Bangkok University. He admired the distinctiveness of these exhibits because they combined both old and new techniques. For the materials, some students selected the forgotten materials while others used new and bold materials to inspire the visitors. Therefore, the fashion items in this showcase were something beyond clothing. They were art objects displayed in one-sided glass cabinet covered with wrinkled plastic. He got this inspiration while taking a tour in museums and browsing through art pieces. That’s why he would like to reflect the value of the students’ work and their effort in an easily accessible way.

In addition, Siam Center presents Art Installation by Rukkit Kuanhawate on the 1st floor of Siam Center and Donate It Forward by Anon Pairot, together with his partners, to encourage everyone in the society to do the good deeds. Moreover, the famous Mr. P by Propaganda comes back with his new look called Mr. P Water as an eye-catching art installation that welcomes everyone at Parc Paragon.

    Tops Thailand parent plans aggressive

Tops Thailand parent Central Food Retail has committed Bt6.5 billion (US$183 million) to open new stores during the next five years.

At a function marking the Central Group’s supermarket subsidiary’s 20th anniversary this week, president Alistair Taylor said the company plans to add about 70 new stores annually to reach 600 by the end of 2021. It currently has 205.

“For this year alone, we plan to allocate between Bt1.2 billion and Bt1.3 billion of investment capital in two areas,” he said.

“Between Bt200 million and Bt300 million will be spent on a system to support our growth. Another Bt600 million will be spent on new stores, and between Bt400 million and Bt500 million on renovations of our existing supermarkets.”

Central Food Retail operates 85 Tops Market stores, 51 Tops Daily and seven Central Food Hall stores, among other formats.

The focus of the expansion plan will be rolling out new Tops Daily and Tops Market stores.

Taylor says the plan will help the company maintain average growth of 10-15 per cent.

Central Food Retail is also considering opportunities outside Thailand.

“There are also many opportunities we have seen in neighbouring countries. However, there is no fixed plan decided by the company at this moment.”

    Thailand’s AIS launches VoWiFi

Thailand’s AIS has launched Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) services, and Taiwan’s APT has announced plans to do the same.

AIS, Thailand’s largest mobile operator, is initially offering VoWiFi for selected iPhone models, including the iPhone 5s, 5c, 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus and iPhone SE.

The company will offer VoWiFi as a complementary add-on for AIS’s 4G services, offering calls at standard rates as well as the ability to send and receive SMS.

AIS has announced plans to expand its WiFi hotspot network from 120,000 to 160,000 this year and to 200,000 by 2017. The operator is aiming to have more than 10 million 4G subscribers by the end of 2016.

Taiwan’s APT has also announced plans to launch VoWiFi services, without announcing a timeframe.

Comments from APT suggest that the operator will initially support selected iPhone models and the Android-based InFocus M372 with the VoWiFi service.

Currently the operator’s 4G network covers around 94% of Taiwan, including 98% of metropolitan areas. The company passed the 4 million subscriber milestone at the end of May.

Last week, Singtel announced that it is planning to launch VoWiFi services in August  following successful HetNet trials.

  • RIP Ensogo Asia shuts down sites

RIP Ensogo Asia shuts down sites

Ensogo Asia has closed down all of its online stores as the online retailer appears on the brink of collapse.

Following the resignation of its co-founder Kris Marszalek, the Singapore-based tech company said it will cut its financial support to its sales and marketplace business units in Indonesia, Thailand, Hong Kong and the Philippines.

“These business units will be shut down. All staff have been informed and communications will be made to customers in the coming days,” the company said in a statement.

Australian internet entrepreneur Patrick Grove founded Ensogo, formerly iBuy. Grove also established the online businesses iProperty and iCar under Catcha Group.

Recently the company reported growth averaging more than 100 per cent in the first quarter, after the launch of a cross-border marketplace business in January. It said the number of suppliers had skyrocketed from 3141 in the fourth quarter of 2015 to 13,599 in the first quarter of 2016. The first three months saw US$8.2 million in gross merchandise value.

As of the end of March 2016, however, Ensogo reported A$22.6 million (about US$17 million) in receipts from customers, while total cash was only A$17.6 million, a 64 per cent decline from A$29 million by the end of last year. Earlier this year the company, which is headquartered in Singapore and listed in Australia, laid off employees.

  • Thailand will tighten call drop regulations

Thailand will tighten call drop regulations

Thai regulator NBTC will introduce stricter standards governing the quality of mobile signals in an effort to address a growing number of complaints related to dropped calls.

The NBTC will amend current regulations, which require operators not to exceed a dropped call rate of 15% across all calls, to instead require operators to maintain this rate in each of Thailand’s service areas.

The new regulations, which are expected to come into effect in September, have been implemented in response to the fact that in more busy service areas with congested traffic dropped call rates are much higher than the average.

In addition to the new regulation, the NBTC has given five mobile operators – AIS, Dtac, True Move, CAT Telecom and TOT – 15 days to resolve their dropped call problems.

According to the report as of May there were 994 complaints involving dropped calls from AIS, 497 from Dtac, 386 from True Move, 32 from CAT and seven from TOT. Complaints are picking up now operators are focusing on customer acquisition strategies to maximize their 4G investments.

Indian regulator Trai is also focusing heavily on the issue of call drops.

  • Pacifica Group plans $11m. expansion

    Pacifica Group plans $11m. expansion

Thai importer and distributor of 14 fashion brands Pacifica Group plans to expand its free-standing shops from 80 to 140 over three years.

Costing about Bt400 million (US$11.3 million), the store expansion will be 60 to 70 per cent mass-market fashion brands, with the balance luxury products, says chief executive Opra Lavichant.

Pacifica’s fashion brands include American Eagle Outfitters, Camper, Coach, Keds and Max Mara.

“Earlier this year we reshuffled our operations within the group with the buy-out of all minority shares in our subsidiary Pacifica Element, which is in charge of the import and distribution of premium fashion products,” says Lavichant. “The move will allow me and my family 100 per cent control over all subsidiaries.”

Other subsidiaries include Go Retail, Pacifica Lifestyle and Pacifica Max.

Lavichant says the reshuffle will also help the company cope with the fluctuating economic situation and the growth of the competitive lifestyle fashion sector.

“We will focus on store expansion and our imported mass fashion brands because of their tremendous opportunity for growth in the domestic market, both in Bangkok and many first and secondary provinces throughout the country.”

The group is also looking to expand outside Thailand, he says.

Under its new three-year business plan, the group aims to increase its sales by 25 to 30 per cent every year, says Lavichant. It also expects its overall revenue to grow from Bt1 billion last year to Bt1.4 billion this year.

“We expect to double the business for our mass-market fashion brands both in sales and the number of physical stores within the next three years. However, the sales of our luxury and premium products will increase by between 15 and 20 per cent every year.”

To help growth in the mass-market segment, the company plans to expand its American Eagle Outfitters branches from five stores to between 15 and 20 over the next three years. The latest outlet has just opened at Fashion Island shopping centre in Bangkok, and another will open at Terminal 21 at the end of this year. The plan includes new stores at major tourist destinations such as Chiang Mai and Phuket.

As well, the group will increase the number of stores selling NYX cosmetics, one of its fastest-growing brands, from 16 to 28 by the end of next year.

  • Alipay to offer cross-border Grab payment

Alipay to offer cross-border Grab payment

Ant Financial’s Alipay and ride-hailing company Grab have partnered to allow Chinese travelers to take advantage of cross-border payment when using Grab’s services in Singapore and Thailand.

Starting today, Alipay users in Singapore and Thailand can pay for their taxi and private-hire car rides booked through the Grab mobile app with their Alipay accounts.

Previously, Chinese travellers had to pay for their rides either by cash or their dual currency credit card. The Alipay option allows Chinese travelers to pay for their fares in Renminbi, without having to worry about exchange rate fluctuations.

The deployment will soon be extended to other Southeast Asian markets that Grab currently operates in, such as Malaysia and Indonesia.

“By collaborating with partners like Grab, we provide Chinese travelers the kind of convenience they are used to in China – no matter where they are in the world,” Ant Financial VP of international business Sabrina Peng said.

Alipay last month partnered with Uber, Grab’s rival in Southeast Asia, in a similar deal which allows the latter’s passengers worldwide to pay for rides in Renminbi.

Alipay has been working with local merchants in 69 overseas markets. As of May 2016, Alipay is accepted in more than 70,000 retail stores outside of China, and tax reimbursement via Alipay is supported in 24 countries and regions, including South Korea, Germany and France.

  • Visa launches #notatourist platform to attract travelers to Thailand with the help of locals and social media

Visa launches #notatourist platform to attract travelers to Thailand with the help of locals and social media

Travelers looking to experience Thailand like locals can now find ideas and inspiration in Visa’s #notatourist platform. The “Visa #notatourist: See Thailand through Local Eyes” campaign aims to woo residents to share the many local experiences that otherwise might elude travelers on the conventional path.

The campaign rallies residents in Thailand to share photographs of the different things to do, food to eat, and places to see on social media, namely Instagram and Facebook. With hashtags #notatourist and #VisaThailand, the selected photos will go on Visa’s dedicated website at www.visa-promotions.com/notatourist/TH/. A panel of judges will then select ten to print, creating a total of 100,000 postcards – the quintessential travel souvenir – to be distributed by Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Visa around the world. There will also be lucky draw for participants at the end of each month within the activity period.[1]

As one of the most popular destinations in the world[2], with 28 million international visitors last year[3], Thailand’s famous sights and sounds are well-known. While the usual tourist attractions such as Grand Palace and dishes like Pad Thai are worth revisiting, Visa believes that Thailand has more to offer – particularly when recommended by locals.

Suripong Tantiyanon, Visa Country Manager, Thailand said: “This is an opportunity for people of Thailand to share unique aspects of the country for visitors looking to venture off the beaten path. Visa recognizes the changing expectations of today’s travelers and their reliance on social media when visiting new places. The #notatourist platform will help unearth new ways to discover hyper-local experiences.”

Complementing existing partnership with TAT, #notatourist platform aims to guide travelers to navigate local experiences, customs and cuisines – all things Thais hold dear but otherwise might be off the radar to some visitors. Residents of Thailand are encouraged to share their favorite places, restaurants, and activities on the social media platform.

The campaign is part of Visa’s #notatourist initiative, launched globally this year. As one of the most popular travel destinations in the region, Thailand is the first country in Southeast Asia to run this platform.

“This is our chance to redefine how Thailand will look to visitors in the next ten years and we at Visa are excited to open this up for everyone to participate,” added Mr. Suripong.

“When I look at our monthly pay outs to our merchants it is great to see that we are indeed delivering growth to both the smaller independent designer with only one storefront and the big international brands at the same proportional scale. The secret for us has been to keep the dual focus of B2B and B2C and grow the two at the same pace. That has made us and our big and small merchants successful.”

James Richard Amatavivadhana, Chief Executive Officer of Minor International PCL, says, “Digital development is rising so fast in Thailand that it is important for us to incorporate the strongest digital sales channels. • Card usage adds THB 113 billion to the Thai economy in the past five years – the largest increase in Asia

Card usage adds THB 113 billion to the Thai economy in the past five years – the largest increase in Asia

Increased use of electronic payments, including credit, debit and prepaid cards, added US$3.18 billion (approximately THB 113 billion) or 0.19% GDP growth to Thailand’s economy from 2011 to 2015, the largest weighted average increase in Asia, according to research conducted by Moody’s Analytics for Visa.

Thailand’s growth triples that of the regional average GDP increase of 0.06% with Vietnam following at 0.14% and Singapore at 0.1%. Increased electronic payment usage also created the equivalent to an average of 75,730 jobs in Thailand per year in the same period.

Suripong Tantiyanon, Visa Country Manager, Thailand said: “These findings reinforce the many positive benefits that electronic payments bring to local economies not just in Thailand but all over the world. This research also suggests that the right public policies can create an open, competitive payment environment, and contribute to economic growth and job creation.”

“In Thailand, Visa has partnered with financial institutions, merchants, technology companies, and government agencies such as Tourism Authority of Thailand to make electronic payment accessible to everyone – accelerating electronic acceptance, growing commerce both online and offline, facilitating tourism, and in general bringing the benefits of card payments nationwide,” added Mr. Suripong.

The Moody’s Analytics study analyzed the impact of electronic payments on economic growth across 70 countries between 2011 and 2015. The Visa-commissioned study found that increased use of electronic payment products, including credit, debit and prepaid cards, added US$296B to GDP, while raising household consumption of goods and services by an average of 0.18 percent per year.

In addition, Moody’s economists estimate that the equivalent to 2.6 million new jobs were created on average, annually, over the five-year period as a result of increased use of electronic payments. The 70 countries in the study make up almost 95 percent of global GDP.

“Electronic payments are a major contributor to consumption, increased production, economic growth and employment creation,” noted Mark Zandi, Chief Economist, Moody’s Analytics. “Those countries which saw large increases in card usage also saw larger contributions to overall growth in their economies.”

Findings from the study were shared in the report, “The Impact of Electronic Payments on Economic Growth,” which also indicated that the electronification of payments benefited governments and contributed to a more stable and open business environment. Additionally electronic payments helped to minimize what is commonly referred to as the grey economy — economic activity that is often cash-based and goes unreported.  As a result, electronic payments provided a higher potential tax revenue base for governments, while also bringing the added benefits of lower cash handling costs, guaranteed payment to merchants and greater financial inclusion for consumers.

Highlights of the global study include:

    • Growth Opportunities:

Card Penetration: Real consumption grew at an average of 2.3 percent from 2011 to 2015, of which 0.01 percent is attributable to increased card penetration. This implies that card usage accounted for about 0.4 percent of growth in consumption. Since consumption growth is, on average, faster in emerging economies, those countries also have more to gain by increasing card usage.

Card Usage: Countries with the largest increases in card usage experienced the biggest contributions in growth.  For example, big increases in GDP were recorded in Hungary (0.25%), the United Arab Emirates (0.23%), Chile (0.23%), Ireland (0.2%), Poland (0.19%) and Australia (0.19%). In most countries, card usage increased regardless of economic performance.

    • Contribution to Employment:

Increased card usage added the equivalent to almost 2.6 million jobs on average, per year, across the 70 countries sampled between 2011 and 2015. Notably, the two countries with the greatest average job increases were China (427,000 jobs added) and India (336,000 jobs added), which both had large gains in employment due to the combination of fast growing labor productivity and increased card usage.

    • Emerging Markets and Developed Countries:

Both emerging markets and developed countries experienced gains in consumption due to higher card usage. Increased card usage added 0.2 percent to consumption in emerging markets, compared with 0.14 percent in developed countries between 2011 and 2015. The corresponding figures for GDP were 0.11 percent for emerging economies and 0.08 percent for developed countries, and suggests that all markets, regardless of current card penetration rates, can benefit from increases in consumption due to increases in card usage.

    • Potential Future Growth:

Across the 70 countries in the study, Moody’s found that every 1 percent increase in usage of electronic payments could produce, on average, an annual increase of approximately $104 billion in the consumption of goods and services. Assuming all future factors remain the same, this could result in an annual average increase of 0.04 percent to GDP attributable to card usage.

The study highlights that expanding electronic payments alone will not necessarily increase a country’s prosperity — it requires the support of a well-developed financial system and healthy economy to have the greatest impact.
