Korean police question KT chair in donation probe

South Korean police are reportedly questioning KT chairman Hwang Chang-gyu over suspicions that the operator made illegal political donations in exchange for favorable legislation.

Police believe that KT made donations to lawmakers sitting on the parliamentary committee in charge of telecommunications in return for policies favorable to KT’s newest business, its internet banking service.

South Korean law bars registered companies from donating any funds to lawmakers as well as donations made with company money.

The police suspect that former and current KT executives may have paid around 90 legislators a combined 430 million won ($401.8 million) in illegal donations between 2014 and 2017.

According to the report, police have already raided the offices of KT and its affiliates on suspicion that KT executives used company funds to buy large amounts of gift vouchers and then cashed these vouchers out for donation money.

Authorities believe that Hwang may have either instructed these executives to do so or was briefed about the plan.

Hwang, who was appointed chairman of the company in 2014 and last year renewed his term for a further three years, has been asked to come in for questioning today, the report adds. Depending on the outcome he may be interrogated for a second time.

Bolloré Logistics Singapore Launches Pilot Project on Robotic Process Automation

Bolloré Logistics has launched a pilot RPA project in Singapore to drive productivity and enhance customer service through the automation of key business processes.

RPA is an application of advanced software and algorithms to complete routine tasks and repetitive operation processes.

Implemented with the support of Accenture, this pilot project covers multiple aspects of freight forwarding operations, such as the accurate and timely update of transportation timestamps, creation of transportation files within the Transport Management System (TMS), and invoice dispatching to customers.

The business processes selected for enhancement under this pilot project were previously manually intensive, repetitive, and prone to human error.

With the implementation of RPA, the original processes are mimicked by software robots that are programmed by one of the market leaders in RPA tools. “With the removal of repetitive and time-consuming tasks, the business process owners can be upskilled to perform higher value added tasks, focusing on client communication, proactive shipment monitoring, and complex coordination,” says Cyril Dumon, CEO Asia-Pacific for Bolloré Logistics.

Following the successful pilot rollout in Singapore, Bolloré Logistics is looking to expand rapidly the implementation of RPA in the Asia-Pacific region and to extend it to other processes within the organization.

  • Hong Kong Customs Roll Up Counterfeit Phone Gangs

Hong Kong Customs Roll Up Counterfeit Phone Gangs

A territory-wide Hong Kong Customs raid has resulted in arrests and netted 100 smartphones suspected of being counterfeits.

During the one-day Operation Snow Leopard, officers raided 12 shops and two storage places, seizing smartphones with suspected false trademarks or bearing possibly false trade descriptions. They also found about 3400 accessories also suspected of being fakes.

Arrested were 18 men and a woman between 21 and 48 years old, including shop owners and salespersons, while the market value of the seized goods is estimated to be about HK$1.5 million.

Customs had earlier received information alleging that some phone-repair shops sold suspected counterfeit smartphone accessories, and some shops were suspected to have engaged in unfair trade practices by selling old smartphones as new products, or selling parallel-imported smartphones as authorised products.

After an in-depth investigation with the help of trademark owners, Customs took the enforcement action yesterday and raided 12 shops.

Customs also cracked down on a syndicate in connection with export, supply and distribution of suspected counterfeit smartphones and accessories. A total of 64 suspected counterfeit smartphones and 330 suspect accessories were seized from the storage places in Sham Shui Po and Tsing Yi.

A 32-year-old male head and 34-year-old female member of the syndicate were arrested. With the investigation ongoing, more arrests are possible.

Intellectual Property Investigation Bureau chief Catherine Yip says the successful detection of the case was attributed to reporting by members of the public and the full help of trademark owners.
She says Customs will step up inspection and enforcement with the approach of the Labour Day Golden Week.

Customs says traders need to comply with the requirements of the Trade Description Ordinance (TDO) as the sale of counterfeit goods can lead to a fine of up to $500,000 and imprisonment for five years.

Meanwhile, Customs has broadened reporting options by introducing a dedicated crime-reporting email account ([email protected]).

Intelligence Bureau chief Kitty Poon says public reports received by Customs have risen progressively by 21 per cent, from 31,994 in 2015 to 38,819 last year. Of these, the proportion received via email has grown from 30 per cent in 2015 to almost 40 per cent last year.

  • Razer aims to take over MOL

Razer aims to take over MOL

Gaming company Razer aims to take over Southeast Asian virtual gaming credits and e-payment platform MOL Global at a valuation of US$100 million.

Razer already holds a nearly 35 per cent stake in the platform.

Razer co-founder/chief Tan Min-Liang says the acquisition will enable Razer to take over one of Southeast Asia’s largest e-payment networks, deepen its presence in the “under-served” region, and create one of the world’s largest virtual-credit platforms for gamers.

In August, Tan took up Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s Twitter challenge for an e-payment proposal to turn the state into a cashless society. The following month, Razer proposed to develop and deploy an e-payment system, RazerPay, for which it would commit S$10 million in seed funding.

Tan this week said the system would also enable cashless capabilities in Southeast Asia as well. It would be complementary and accretive to Razer’s gaming business.

Razer, which is dual-headquartered in Singapore and San Francisco and listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, says it will pay about US$61 million to acquire 65.1 per cent of MOL’s issued share capital.

The acquisition will be by way of a statutory merger, upon which MOL will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Razer.

Its exclusive stores contribute almost half of total sales volume, while the rest comes from multibrand outlets and other channels. It also retails through more than 1000 multibrand outlets.

  • Sportswear sales growth goes up

    Sportswear sales growth goes up

Sportswear sales grew faster than those of luxury goods in China between 2012 and last year, says research group Euromonitor International.

Market leaders Adidas and Nike have both had double-digit sales growth, while Lululemon and Under Armour are also dominant.

Meanwhile, local brand Particle Fever is attracting attention with its designer sportswear.

“People in China, especially Beijing, want to be seen differently,” says co-founder Zoe Liu, who says it is the only local activewear brand that takes a creative approach to marketing and branding. It makes sports bras, leggings and running shorts designed to be trendy and fashionable as well as comfortable for activities.

Liu’s line, which is sold on Tmall as well as by Lane Crawford, sits alongside the sportswear collections of New Balance and Reebok in retail outlets like Runner Camp, a concept fitness store that opened in Shanghai six months ago and includes an experience centre and running track as well as a gym.

Less than 10 years ago, most young Chinese female tourists in the country’s mountains wore a dress and heels. Booming interest in health and fitness has generated demand for more practical and fashionable fitness gear.

Liu is now making final preparations for opening her second showroom in China, in WF Central, a new high-end shopping mall on Beijing’s oldest shopping street, Wangfujing. It will look more like an art gallery or a designer concept store as Liu and her team collaborate with artists to create visual displays.

They also plan to invite emerging sports groups, such as modern dance troupes, for in-store performances.

WF Central, developed by Hongkong Land, prioritises wellness, with its tenants including Under Armour with its largest showroom internationally, Superdry with a flagship store and Hong Kong’s Pure Yoga with its first studio for China.

China performs best for L’Occitane International

China continued to outperform for fragrance group L’Occitane International during the year ended 31 March, its unaudited trading figures show.

Along with Brazil, Hong Kong and the US it showed the highest sales growth in local currencies.

China’s sales growth was 20.5 per cent in local currency with same-store sales growth of 15.1 per cent as it maintained strong momentum online and offline.

The group’s net sales reached €1.3 billion (US$1.5 billion), growing 4.6 per cent at constant rates. Unfavourable foreign-exchange rates saw net sales at reported rates ease by 0.3 per cent over last year.

During the 12 months, the company disposed of Le Couvent des Minimes while LimeLife became a subsidiary in January. Excluding Le Couvent des Minimes, LimeLife and a one-off deal for L’Occitane au Bresil in September 2016, the group’s sales growth at reported rates and constant rates were -1 and 3.7 per cent respectively.

Emerging brands Melvita, Erborian and L’Occitane au Bresil (excluding the one-off deal) continued double-digit growth.

The group opened 41 stores and renovated 153 during the year, compared with 51 openings and 104 renovations the previous year.

AirAsia looks at Tinder to find travel lovers

Low-cost airline AirAsia is hoping New Zealanders will swipe right and fall in love with Malaysia.

The Kuala Lumpur-based airline is launching the “Meet Malaysia” campaign on Tuesday.

Anyone who chooses to match with the destination will go into the draw to win a trip to Malaysia for two people and tickets to the Borneo Jazz Festival or Rainforest World Music Festival.

The campaign, which the airline has described as “cheeky”, is aimed at attracting those who may want to try something new. Something that may be common on Tinder, but perhaps not for an airline.

AirAsia hopes the campaign will attract potential travellers on the app who were thinking about spending time in places like Indonesia, Thailand or Vietnam that could be swept off their feet by the Malaysian experience.

AirAsia operates seven flights per week from Auckland to Kuala Lumpur with connections to 15 cities in Malaysia.
