2017 Samui Regatta continues successful trend, with Centara Grand Beach Resort as Sponsor

Centara Grand Beach Resort Samui once again showed itself capable of handling international water sports events, being the host sponsor for the Samui Regatta 20-27 May. The Regatta, in its 16th year, has grown to attract the best yachts in Asia and a large spectator following. They come to Samui for great sailing, fantastic beach parties, and the island’s acclaimed hospitality.

Samui Island itself is acknowledged for its white-sand beaches, sparkling blue sea, breezy coconut trees and picture-postcard tropical appeal. Lately it has proven itself a leading sports tourism destination, especially in yachting. With full support from the Thai government and its policy to promote sports tourism, Samui has attracted more international events and sports enthusiasts to the country during the last decade. The now-famous Samui Regatta is one of the blue-ribbon international events exemplifying this trend.

“This is another opportunity for people to recognize our resort, not only as a luxurious tropical tourist destination but also a superb water sport venue,” said Denis Thouvard, the resort’s General Manager. “We are located in a prime area where nature and civilization mesh perfectly. Our private beachfront offers Chaweng’s soft white sand, crystal clear water, and peaceful space for personal relaxation or fun activities such as swimming, sailing, jet-skiing and yachting. The resort is also an ideal base for exploring Samui and its island neighbors Koh Nang Yuan and Ang Thong National Marine Park. It is next to Samui’s main town and 20 minutes from the airport. Our guests enjoy wonderful vacations in this tropical paradise.”

“Samui Island is one of the top tourism and yachting destinations in Asia,” added Ms. Kae Wattana, Managing Director of Regattas Asia. “We have organised Samui Regatta for 15 years and each year we see the number of yachts that come to the island is growing. I believe this growth will continue as more and more people experience the beauty of Samui and the unmatched sailing it has to offer. This year we will again have a spectator boat at Samui Regatta which members of the public and tourists can join to experience the event and learn more about yachting. Our aim is bring the event and yachting closer to people, to increase people’s understanding of yachting, and to attract more visitors to Samui Island. Having Centara, a leading Thai hospitality brand, joined just as main host for this event is helping us to ensure that all participants will be treated professionally and bring back not only a trophy or medal from a competition but also a fantastic memory in Samui as well”.

The Samui Regatta consists of five days of racing and six nights of parties, including daily prize-awarding on the beach and a lavish Gala Dinner hosted by Centara Grand Beach Resort on the final night. This event showcases Samui’s reputation as a leading yachting destination and contributes significant revenues to the local economy. Surveys show most of the approximately 500 participants come from overseas and have high incomes.

“As part of the Samui community, we are proud to support the people and economy of this island,” General Manager Thouvard concluded. “In the future we look forward to seeing more tourists, both returning guests and new visitors who want to witness Samui’s natural beauty with their own eyes.”

Qatar Airways Umrah Passengers Transferred to Garuda Indonesia

Qatar Airways umrah passengers will be transferred to flag carrier Garuda Indonesia. “We have a partnership with Qatar Airways. Some passengers to be carried from Jakarta to Saudi Arabia will be transferred to Garuda Indonesia, it expected to happen in a short term,” Garuda CEO Pahala Mansyuri told us yesterday, June 8. According to Pahala, the opportunity will be exploited by Garuda Indonesia to introduce its highly potential umrah services. The first phase will see the transfer of 45 Qatar Airways passengers in Jakarta-Saudi Arabia route. In the phase, around 150 passengers will be carried in the routes previously operated by Qatar Airways.

In a written statement issued Wednesday Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said that he has not revoked Qatar Airways flight license. The government will only transfer Indonesian umrah passengers using Qatar Airways to other airlines.

Budi said that the transfer will be done in the wake of the diplomatic row between Qatar and some other Gulf countries. The conflict has resulted in a ban on Qatar Airways from flying above Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, which is the destination country of hajj and umrah.

As for flights from and to Indonesia, Qatar Airways may still carry passengers as usual. “Qatar Airways can still serve flights from and to Indonesia and [passengers] may continue the travel to third countries aside from those having diplomatic issues with Qatar,” the minister said.

  • Largest Chinese firm to invest in power plants in Indonesia

Largest Chinese firm to invest in power plants in Indonesia

The largest Chinese power company “China Huadian Corporation” has the opportunity to invest in power plants in Indonesia. “The Chinese firm wants to invest in our power plants. I have suggested that it should find a good local partner,” Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Ignatius Jonan informed us in Beijing on Thursday night.

According to Jonan, China Huadian Corporation is the largest power company in China, and its assets are about twice that of Indonesias state electricity company (PLN). Jonan said that with regard to investment matters, his ministry will not discriminate investors based on certain countries.

“We do not differentiate, whether it is China, Japan, or any other country. What matters is that we are fit with it; that is all,” he said after the Eighth Ministerial Conference on Clean Energy (CEM8).

One of the opportunities offered to China Huadian is the construction of power plants in the governments 35 thousand-megawatt power plant program.

“This is in accordance with the directives of Joko Widodo during the OBOR Conference (One Belt, One Road), which encouraged Chinese investment in Indonesia. I am following up on it,” Jonan, who is a former minister of transportation, stated.

Jonan made assurance that next year, all residents of the island of Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara, will have access to electricity.

“Coincidentally, with the development of a steam power plant, Sumba may perhaps get an additional 50 megawatts of electricity,” the minister, who was accompanied by Indonesian Ambassador to China Soegeng Rahardjo, noted.

The annual CEM event, held in Beijing, was attended by ministers and high-level officials from 24 countries.

At the eighth CEM, Jonan got the opportunity to hold a bilateral meeting with China, as the host.

On the occasion, Minister Jonan also encouraged several Chinese companies to increase their investment in the oil and gas sector in Indonesia.

“Some Chinese oil and gas companies have been investing in Indonesia for the past 15 years, but the number is still small and needs to be increased,” Jonan added.

He said that unlike Chinese companies, oil and gas companies from the US have been investing in Indonesia for quite a long time.

“Chevron, which was known as Caltex in the past, and Exxon have been operating in Riau for about 100 years with a very big investment,” Jonan pointed out.

In addition to working sessions for energy ministers and other high-level policymakers, CEM8 featured a public-private action summit with keynote speakers, thematic panel discussions, and opportunities for high-profile announcements of ambitious clean energy efforts.

It also included a two-day technology exhibition demonstrating breakthrough clean energy technologies, products, and business models; and an Innovation Theater showcasing potentially game-changing clean energy innovations and inspirations.

  • Indonesian biodiesel producers turn to China

Indonesian biodiesel producers turn to China

Indonesian biodiesel producers are eyeing China as a new promising market amid negative sentiment in the European Union and the United states.

Indonesian Biofuel Producers Association (Aprobi) chairman MP Tumanggor stressed Thursday that their members could no longer rely on their exports to the US and European Union.

“Our production capacity reaches 11 million kiloliters per year, 4 million of which is absorbed by the domestic market. The remaining 7 million kiloliters are idle,” he said, adding that exports to European countries and the US account for just a portion.

The negative sentiment was sparked by an anti-dumping campaign from both the European Union and the US commercial trade association National Biodiesel Boards (NBB).

Aprobi secretary general Stanley Ma said that China was a potential market for Indonesian biodiesel because the country used B5 for its fuel, which consists of 5 percent biodiesel and 95 percent petroleum biodiesel. “China might need 9 million kiloliters of biodiesel a year. This could boost our exports,” he said.

The Indonesian government is reportedly set to send a team to China on June 16 in an attempt to boost biodiesel exports to the country.

Data from the association shows that in first quarter of this year, Indonesia produced 1.01 million kiloliters of biodiesel of which 761,519 kiloliters was absorbed by the domestic market.

The two companies’ Indonesian subsidiaries will establish a joint venture, PT PanaHome Deltamas Indonesia, in October to construct residential and commercial complexes as part of the Deltamas smart town plan, a comprehensive urban development project that includes commercial facilities, residential neighborhoods and an industrial park.

The joint venture combine PanaHome’s expertise in building sustainable smart towns with the Sojitz group’s concept of a residential neighborhood proximal to business districts in the area of Deltamas.

“The first phase of this project will involve construction of 520 housing units with costs up to ¥10 billion ($91 million). And we will continue other phases with 1,000 housing units,” said Kazuhiko Tanaka, managing director of PanaHome Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd., who is based in Singapore.

The first phase will start in the beginning of 2018 and finish in 2019, followed by a final phase to be completed around 2026, Tanaka said. “We will start selling units in the middle of 2018.”

“We will not only adopt Japanese quality, such as construction and after-sales service, but also adjust to Indonesia’s situation,” said Tanaka.

“Nowadays, the development of Deltamas city has already reached 70 percent of its total 3,200-hectare area. In the near future, there will be schools and hospitals as well,” said Masahiro Koizumi, vice president of Sojitz’s local property developer, PT Puradelta Lestari Tbk.

Rupiah Climbs on Forex Reserves Increase

The rupiah climbed 20 bps this morning at the Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate. The rupiah now trades for Rp13,278 per US dollar, from what analysts said to be the impact of Indonesia’s foreign exchange (forex) reserves’ increase.

Samuel Sekuritas economist Rangga Cipta said on Friday, June 9, that the forex reserve increase in May to US$124.95 billion helped the rupiah strengthened. But the gain is relatively limited as the US dollar is also on an uptrend over speculations that the Federal Open Meeting Committee will result in a Fed Fund Rate hike.

Meanwhile, money market observer from Bank Woori Saudara Indonesia, Rully Nova, said the forex increase is expected to help maintain the rupiah stability on the long run.

“With stable fluctuations, the domestic economic activities will be able to increase, and eventually provide investors’ with comfort and security when making investments,”

  • Semen Indonesia records 10 percent growth in sales

Semen Indonesia records 10 percent growth in sales

Cement company PT Semen Indonesia is still able to record an increase of up to 10 percent in sales in the midst of current tight competition and growth of infrastructure projects which has not been as expected.

“Sales in the period from January to May 2017 were up 10 percent from last year,” the companys head of communication bureau, Sigit Wahono, said here on Friday.

He said sales in May were recorded at 2.9 million tons to make the total in the first five months of this year to reach 11.5 million tons.

He admitted that although the cement market has been over supplied due to the increasing number of players including foreign industries, Semen Indonesia is still able to record significant growth.

Regarding Semen Indonesias control of around 43 percent market share, he said that it has been relatively the same in the past five years.

On market absorption, Sigit said that in general it was still the same as last year which was dominated by retail (bag) sales for household market segment and housing development.

“In the first semester you see there were not many big projects nationwide including from the government. So sales are still dominated by retail sales,” he said.

Regarding the cement factory in Rembang, Central Java, whose progress is still hampered, Sigit said that it did not affect much as it was not included in the Cost Budget and Work Plan.

He said however that Semen Indonesia has set a target of contribution from the factory at 1.1 million tons out of its capacity which is up to 1.5 million tons.

“Indeed the factory in Rembang has not been included in the production or sales plan. However, we are optimistic it will contribute 1.1 million tons as its capacity is 1.5 million tons. That will be the target for the second semester this year,” he said.

Sigit said Semen Indonesia would abide by the decision by not conducting development in the factory area pending the result of the second round of environmental study.

  • China’s cybersecurity law poses major challenges

China’s cybersecurity law poses major challenges

The controversial new Cybersecurity Law which came into force at the start of the month in China brings significant change and some uncertainty for companies, but is to be expected in a rapidly evolving environment of new technologies and big data, acording to digital forensics and eDiscovery specialist KrolLDiscovery.

“Mirroring what is happening all around the world, the Chinese government is becoming more involved with data protection and strengthening enforcement,”  KrolLDiscovery country manager for Shanghai Han Lai said.

“Up until now, its rules have not been clearly defined or regularly enforced, but this new law is looking to change that, and companies need to be fully up to speed with its requirements, especially network operators managing data.”

The majority of the new law’s provisions apply to “Critical Information Infrastructure Operators” (CIIO) possessing data critical to China’s security. Industries predominantly targeted in this new definition include financial, transportation, healthcare, utilities and telecommunications.

The most significant, and controversial, change is that Chinese citizens’ “personal information” and “important data” must now be stored on servers within China. Any companies claiming an exception that is “truly necessary” must undergo a security assessment before information can be released.

“This will affect the majority of foreign companies that operate in China, in particular those which use their global infrastructure and IT resources to operate their business in China, as the original data collected, including business data and customer data within China will typically be stored directly in the data centres or servers physically located overseas,” Lai said.

“For example many global companies are still using email servers located outside China for their China operations. Companies need to start thinking and planning ahead to restructure their infrastructure to be in line with the new law.”

In addition, the new law reinforces the requirement for network operators to obtain their clients’ consent before collecting and disclosing personal information, including the reason for the disclosure, and take measures to ensure the security of personal information.

“This tightening is commensurate with other developed markets, but will take a while to get used to in China where data on individuals is collected on a mass scale for sales and marketing purposes without proper consent, and probably without awareness of what the risks might be,” remarked Lai.

From now on, all network providers must also pass a “network security examination.” This includes specific requirements that network operators must follow when purchasing new network systems.

What is not clear yet, as the law is currently untested, is what the consequences will be of noncompliance, but they are expected to be more severe than in the past, and more rigorously enforced. Cancellation of a business license was one penalty in the previous regulations.

“The new regulations require CIIO’s to establish violation reporting mechanisms, suggesting that the government is taking the new law very seriously,” noted Lai.

Lai added, “Companies need to ensure that an appropriate framework is established for collecting and using data, demonstrating that any data collected has a proper purpose and that its use can be explained in detail. Companies should also ensure appropriate security and protection measures are in place to safeguard the data as well as incident response procedures for responding and reporting any breach.”

UnionPay launches QuickPass in Hong Kong and Singapore

Following a debut in China late last month, UnionPay International is extending its UnionPay QuickPass QR code mobile payment service to Hong Kong and Singapore.

The first merchants providing this new service are three stores of Colourmix at Causeway Bay, Hong Kong and two stores of BreadTalk in VivoCity and Marina Bay Financial Centre, Singapore.

Next, UnionPay mobile QuickPass QR code payment will be introduced in the travel destinations favored by Chinese tourists, including Thailand, Indonesia and Australia.

The new service supports NFC contactless payment with UnionPay chip cards, smartphones and wearable devices. Outside mainland China, mobile QuickPass is now accepted at about 500,000 POS terminals across Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, Canada, Russia, the UAE, etc. Customers can pay easily by tapping mobile phones. The newly launched QR code payment is a significant supplement to NFC payment.

“We are accelerating the rollout of various mobile QuickPass products and services outside mainland China so that we can bring faster, more convenient and secure payment options for our customers,” said Cai Jianbo, CEO of UnionPay International.

“We choose to launch UnionPay QR code payment first in daily spend merchants to meet the diverse tourist payment needs resulting from the Chinese tourists’ preference shift from group tours to free-and-independent traveling. I believe that in the near future, customers outside mainland China will also be able to enjoy this safer and easier QR code payment service.”

With the launch of Consumer Presented QR Code in Hong Kong and Singapore, China cardholders can add their UnionPay cards to the “UnionPay Wallet” APP, press “Payment Code” and choose “Overseas Payment Code” to generate a QR code, and then have it scanned by the cashier to complete payment.

In Hong Kong, the service supports the combination of payment code and e-coupon code. Customers using the UnionPay cross-border marketing platform, u·plan, can get an exclusive e-coupon code from the u·plan zone in the “UnionPay Wallet” APP, and have it scanned by the merchant to enjoy discount while making payments.

Compared with other QR code payment products, UnionPay mobile QuickPass QR code has three major features: Firstly, it is with global interoperability. Secondly, this payment mode provides greater safety as it uses the tokenization technology. Thirdly, it provides comprehensive services including risk compensation mechanism.

  • China launches consultation on 5G spectrum

China launches consultation on 5G spectrum

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) is launching a consultation regarding the planning and use of millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum for the development of 5G networks.

The MIIT is seeking industry advise on the planning and use of the 24.75-27.5GHz, 37-42.5GHz and other millimeter-wave bands, which “will be key spectrum for 5G systems”, the regulator said in a notice posted on Thursday.

The public consultation is intended to collect feedback from the industry on such aspects as suggestions regarding the deployment status of the proposed frequency bands, future planning on the use of these bands for 5G system; the key technical problems (including RF devices, chips, test and measurement, etc.) for the deployment of these frequency bands, as well as feasible solutions and a spectrum roadmap.

It also aims to identify any compatibility and co-existence issues between 5G networks on these bands and other wireless systems in adjacent bands.

The consultation will close on August 7.

Earlier the MIIT also launched a public consultation on the use of the 3300-3600MHz and 4800-5000MHz bands for 5G. The consultation released on Tuesday and to be closed on July 7, hints that China will allocate 3300-3600MHz and 4800-5000MHz spectrum for the deployment of 5G.

While the MIIT has not yet announced the exact timeline for the release of 5G spectrum, the country’s three mobile operators China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom have announced plans for 5G trials, in preparation of a commercial launch in 2020.

China Mobile, for instance, announced at Mobile World Congress in February that the operator will launch large-scale pre-commercial 5G trials in China in 2019.
