Bitcoin Pizza Day: Could This Anniversary Spark a New All-Time High?

May 22, 2010, marked a milestone that would ultimately change the financial landscape: American software developer Laszlo Hanyecz made the first real-world purchase using Bitcoin, spending a staggering 10,000 of the digital currency on two large pizzas. While this might seem like just a fun anecdote, the implications were profound. Those pizzas, delivered by a student from Papa John’s, ignited a movement that has since seen Bitcoin soar astronomically in value.

Fast forward 15 years, and those 10,000 Bitcoins, once valued at a mere $41, are now worth about $870 million. Talk about a feast gone from humble to legendary! With the current price of Bitcoin hovering above the $100,000 mark, many are left wondering whether a new all-time high is on the horizon.

Soaring High and No End in Sight

For Rino Borini, a Bitcoin expert based in Zurich, there’s every reason to believe that major price surges are imminent. The co-founder and CEO of House of Sathosi has set a goal of $150,000 for this year. However, he cautions that the ride will be anything but smooth, likening it to a rollercoaster: “I can easily envision a new record between $110,000 and $115,000 shortly. Yet, brace yourself for some significant price dips along the way,” he reveals.

Bitcoin Like a Swiss Army Knife

According to Bitcoin Suisse, a notable player in the cryptocurrency realm, current market dynamics are working in Bitcoin’s favor. Falling inflation rates, increasing global liquidity, and an influx of institutional investments are propelling its popularity. “Bitcoin is increasingly versatile, much like a Swiss army knife—it can adapt both to risk-on and risk-off scenarios,” they state.

Structurally, a noteworthy shift is taking place in Bitcoin ownership. Institutional investors, including governments, corporations, and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), now hold about 14% of all Bitcoins. Notably, publicly traded companies have amassed over 180,000 Bitcoins this year alone, further cementing Bitcoin’s place in mainstream finance.

    Structural Shift towards Institutional Investors

Bitcoin Suisse underscores the growing tension between supply and demand as a critical factor in this evolution. They suggest that these structural changes may not only reduce volatility but also accelerate Bitcoin’s journey toward maturation. With such optimism, Bitcoin Suisse even hints at a thrilling price target of $180,000 by year’s end.

Could we see prices take off on an exhilarating upward trajectory? If history shows us anything, it’s that this digital currency tends to keep us on our toes!

A proposed THB 100 million compensation fund for durian farmers and locals affected by wild elephant incursions also featured prominently in their discussions.

In response, Prime Minister Paetongtarn assured the farmers that the government is working with companies to purchase surplus produce, thereby minimizing waste. She pledged to streamline export processes and confirmed that the Ministry of Labour will tackle agricultural workforce shortages. In the funding categories, color cosmetics lead the charge with $245 million, followed by multi-category brands at $77 million, and skincare at $46.5 million.

Mergers and acquisitions continue to shake up the market, with Klpartners’ $129 million acquisition of Manyo earlier this year and LG Household & Healthcare snatching up The Crème Shop in 2022 for $120 million. Notably, GP Club and Mediheal have both reached unicorn status, while APR emerged as the sole K-Beauty IPO in 2024.

Prominent investors in the sector, such as Goodwater Capital, Pear VC, and Altos Ventures, have significantly influenced funding dynamics. The past two years have seen seed-stage activity driven primarily by 500 Global, Barlon Capital, and Blueprint, while early-stage rounds have been dominated by khfamily.kr, Company K Partners, and Smile Gate Investment.

Dollar Rises Against Dong, Signaling Shifts in Currency Markets

The U.S. dollar experienced a slight uptick against the Vietnamese dong on Monday morning, even as it lost ground against several other major currencies. At Vietcombank, the dollar was set at VND26,130, marking a modest 0.08% increase from the previous weekend. Meanwhile, in the black market, the exchange rate dipped slightly to VND26,420, reflecting a 0.04% decrease.

In a bid to adjust to changing economic conditions, the State Bank of Vietnam raised its reference rate by 0.04%, bringing it to VND24,970.

On the global stage, the dollar’s four-week winning streak stumbled during early Asian trading, as markets reacted to the unexpected downgrade of the U.S. government’s credit rating and the persistent undercurrents of trade tensions. A report from Reuters indicated that while the greenback rose by 0.6% against major currencies last week—a brief respite sparked by a temporary trade truce between the U.S. and China—the overall economic landscape revealed rising import prices and deteriorating consumer confidence.

This shift came after Moody’s downgraded the U.S. sovereign credit rating by one notch last Friday, becoming the last of the major rating agencies to take this step. The organization cited concerns over the nation’s ballooning $36 trillion debt load.

On the other hand, the dollar fell by 0.3% to 145.22 yen and dropped 0.2% against the Swiss franc, both safe-haven assets. The euro rose to $1.1185, gaining 0.2%, while the British pound saw a slight increase, trading at $1.3299, up by 0.1%.

In the world of currency fluctuations, you never know when a dollar might do a little dance!

    Questions & Answers

What caused the recent rise of the U.S. dollar against the Vietnamese dong?
The dollar’s slight rise was mainly influenced by its performance against several other currencies and adjustments in Vietnam’s reference rate.

How did the international market react to the U.S. government’s credit rating downgrade?
The downgrade led to a trimming of the dollar’s four-week gains as markets grew cautious, reflecting concerns about economic conditions and rising debt.

What are the implications of Moody’s downgrade on the U.S. dollar?
The downgrade raises concerns over fiscal health and can influence investor sentiment, potentially leading to increased volatility in the dollar’s value against other currencies.

Gold Prices Climb Higher as Global Markets Show Strong Gains

Vietnamese gold prices saw an uptick Monday morning, reflecting a global trend as bullion rates climbed. The Saigon Jewelry Company reported a 0.68% increase, bringing its gold bar price to VND119.3 million (approximately US$4,597.04) per tael. Meanwhile, gold rings also experienced a rise, gaining 0.44% to settle at VND114.5 million per tael.

Globally, the price of gold surged due to a softer dollar and resurgent trade tensions, particularly following U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s reiteration of President Donald Trump’s tariff threats, which have reignited safe-haven demand. According to Reuters, spot gold rose by 0.7% to $3,223.55 an ounce, while U.S. gold futures increased by 1.3% to reach $3,228.70.

It’s worth noting that gold had a rough ride last Friday, shedding over 2% and experiencing its worst weekly performance since November, primarily due to increased risk appetite stemming from the U.S.-China trade agreement. However, the dollar’s decline on Monday made gold less expensive for overseas buyers, stimulating new interest.

Tim Waterer, Chief Market Analyst at KCM Trade, commented on the recent market shifts: “The Moody’s downgrade of the U.S. credit rating and the subsequent market response has injected some energy back into the gold price.” He speculated on potential interest rate cuts from the Federal Reserve, suggesting that outcomes from Trump’s trade negotiations might play a crucial role in timing.

Gold has long been seen as a refuge during times of political and economic uncertainty, thriving especially in low-interest-rate environments. Just when you thought the gold market was settling down, it turns out that geopolitical tensions can still stir the pot!

    Questions & Answers

What are the current gold prices in Vietnam?
Gold bars are priced at VND119.3 million per tael, while gold rings are at VND114.5 million per tael.

What factors are influencing the rise in gold prices?
A softer dollar, renewed trade tensions, and the downgrade of the U.S. credit rating have all contributed to the increased demand for gold.

Why are low-interest rates significant for gold?
Gold tends to perform well in low-interest-rate environments as it becomes a more attractive investment compared to interest-bearing assets.
