  • Tesla Leads In Driver-Assisted Technology Crashes

Tesla Leads In Driver-Assisted Technology Crashes

Tesla Inc reported 273 vehicle crashes since July involving advanced driving assistance systems, more than any other automaker, according to data U.S. auto safety regulators released on Wednesday.

Automakers and tech companies reported more than 500 crashes since June 2021, when the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued an order requiring the information. Two U.S. Senators called for a deeper probe of the “out-of-control industry,” and a U.S. safety board said the data was not standardized so it was hard to evaluate performance of each carmaker’s system.

Car companies are rushing to add driver assistance systems, saying these improve safety by handling some maneuvers. U.S. regulators are trying to understand the practical effect of the changes. But automakers collect and report data in different ways, making it difficult to evaluate systems performance.

Democratic Senators Ed Markey and Richard Blumenthal told NHTSA in a letter that “publicizing the data alone is not enough. We urge NHTSA to … shed needed light on this out-of-control industry and impose guardrails to prevent more deadly crashes.”

The current report contains “a ‘fruit bowl’ of data with a lot of caveats, making it difficult” to understand, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Chair Jennifer Homendy said in a statement. “Tesla collects a huge amount of high-quality data, which may mean they’re overrepresented in NHTSA’s release.”

Tesla’s advanced driver assistant software dubbed “Full Self Driving” has also created confusion about vehicle capabilities.

The senators raised alarm about the high number of Tesla crashes. “We worry that some drivers today are using the technology as a convenience feature and are placing themselves and other road users in danger,” Markey and Blumenthal wrote.

NHTSA ordered companies to quickly report all crashes involving advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and vehicles equipped with automated driving systems being tested on public roads.

Of the 392 such crashes reported by a dozen automakers since July, six deaths were reported and five serious injuries. Honda Motor identified 90 crashes.

Companies also reported 130 crashes involving prototype automated driving systems, while 108 involved no injuries and one was a serious injury crash.

NHTSA said Alphabet Inc’s self-driving car unit Waymo reported 62 crashes involving automated driving systems, while General Motors’ Cruise had 23.

Waymo said its crashes were not high severity and one-third were in manual mode. Airbags deployed in only two crashes.

Cruise said it “has logged millions of miles in one of the most complex urban driving environments because saving lives is our chief aim.”

The NTSB reiterated a five-year-old recommendation that NHTSA require automakers to provide standardized crash and usage data. It made the recommendation after the a 2016 crash killed a Tesla driver using the company’s Autopilot system, which the company website says “enables your car to steer, accelerate and brake automatically within its lane” but still requires the driver’s attention.

NHTSA said the first batch of data has already been used to trigger investigations and recalls and helped inform existing defect probes.

The data “will help our investigators quickly identify potential defect trends,” NHTSA Administrator Steven Cliff said, cautioning the raw number of incidents reported per manufacturer “is by itself inadequate to draw conclusions.”

The agency emphasized crashes are tracked by individual automakers in different ways and discouraged comparisons in part because there are no comprehensive metrics on how widely each system is used.

Tesla did not respond to requests for comment.

Honda told Reuters it had found no defects in the systems and its crash reports were based on unverified customer statements “to comply with NHTSA’s 24-hour reporting deadline.”

No other automaker reported more than 10 ADAS crashes during the period.

Despite the limitations, NHTSA said the data was essential to quickly spot potential defects or safety trends. Incidents that occur when an advanced system was engaged within 30 seconds of a crash must be reported within 24 hours to NHTSA.

The agency plans to release new data monthly.

NHTSA has been scrutinizing Autopilot and said last week it was upgrading its probe into 830,000 Tesla vehicles with the system, a required step before it could seek a recall. The regulator had opened a preliminary evaluation to assess the performance of Autopilot after about a dozen crashes in which Tesla vehicles struck stopped emergency vehicles.

Separately, NHTSA has opened 35 special crash investigations involving Tesla vehicles in which ADAS was suspected of being used. A total of 14 crash deaths have been reported in those Tesla investigations, including a May California crash that killed three people.

  • Skoda Auto India’s Sales & Service Network Crosses 205 Outlets

Skoda Auto India’s Sales & Service Network Crosses 205 Outlets

Skoda Auto India has announced expanding its total customer touchpoints to over 205 outlets, across 123 cities. The carmaker says that it has 175 touchpoints in India in December 2021, and in the last six months the company has added more than 30 outlets. However, we must tell you that these are not just the larger dealerships, but rather also include Skoda’s low-cost sales and service touchpoints, which the company has been launching in tier 2 and tier 3 cities to have a wider network. Compared to a traditional dealership, these smaller outlets are 2- or 3-car showrooms with 2-bay workshops.

Zac Hollis, Brand Director, Skoda Auto India said, “By rapidly increasing our customer touchpoints and expanding our network, we have the largest ever-presence of the Skoda brand in India. Not only have we expanded in quantity but have also focused on quality with our revolutionary digitalised showrooms.”

In December 2021, Skoda had around 175 touchpoints in India, across 117 cities, and the company had set a target to reach 225 outlets by the end of 2022. However, given the number of new launches like – Skoda Slavia, Kodiaq and Kushaq Monte Carlo, the company ramped up its expansion plans, and now it is targeting 250 touchpoints by the end of this year. The company aims to add over 10 touchpoints in each of the four zones across India.

Skoda wants to establish its presence in both metro and non-metro centres, covering important market clusters. In fact, Skoda will soon be opening its first touchpoints in Nagaland at Dimapur, and at Dibrugarh in Assam. In addition to these, the company will be entering or adding centres in other regions like Gandhidham and Morbi, in Gujarat, Ambala in Haryana, Amritsar in Punjab, Warangal in Telangana, Pollachi in Tamil Nadu, Haldwani in Uttarakhand and Tirur is Kerala.

  • U.S. Agency Asks Tesla For Information On Canadian Fire Incident

U.S. Agency Asks Tesla For Information On Canadian Fire Incident

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Thursday it has asked Tesla Inc for information about a recent 2021 Tesla Model Y fire in Vancouver, British Columbia, in which a driver reported struggling to exit.

The NHTSA told Reuters the agency “is aware of the incident and has reached out to the manufacturer for information.”

Electrek posted a video of the incident in which the owner said he received an error notification and then saw smoke. The driver said that to get out he “had to smash the window. … I kicked through the window because everything stops. The power didn’t work. The door didn’t open. The windows didn’t go down.”

  • Ferrari Teases 2023 Le Mans Challenger, To Begin Testing Soon

Ferrari Teases 2023 Le Mans Challenger, To Begin Testing Soon

Almost 49 years after Ferrari last participated in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Italian carmaker is back as it teased its latest challenger before testing starts for the 2023 edition of the French endurance race. Ferrari unveiled the first details of the Le Mans Hypercar that will compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship from 2023 and shows strong design references to the stylistic features that distinguish the models in the Prancing Horse range. Additionally, the design and the parts used for the 2023 Ferrari Le Mans challenger would make way for the company’s road car range as well.

The last time team from Maranello took part in the Le Mans was in 1973, while the last win came in 1965 with the Ferrari 250 LM, before the run of six consecutive victories ended in 1966 by Ford GT40. We still don’t know the name of the new hypercar for Le Mans but do know that the new prancing horse would join the Hypercar class of the FIA World Endurance Championship. The teaser image of the new Ferrari Le Mans hypercar shows off blade-thin DRLs connected by an illuminated red highlight, to a deep lip spoiler angled down at the edges. We expect that the new hypercar would be mid-engine driven, built on a completely new chassis, and hybrid system, as well as new parts that would eventually trickle down to the company’s road car range.

The hypercar is in the prototype stage and is early in the day to announce the drivers and the official crews that would be part of the team. But if we had to speculate, then the bets are high on Callum Ilott, Alfa Romeo driver Antonia Giovinazzi and perhaps even former F1 champion Kimi Raikkonen. Then there are rosters like Pier Guidi, Calado, Serra and Davide Rigon, Miguel Molina, and Sam Bird.

  • Goodyear To Recall Over 1.7 Lakh Recreational Vehicle Tyres In The US

Goodyear To Recall Over 1.7 Lakh Recreational Vehicle Tyres In The US

Tyre firm Goodyear on Tuesday said that it would be recalling 1.73 lakh G159 recreational vehicle (RV) tyres in the US. As per a report by Reuters, the recall was issued because of the potential for catastrophic tread separations and after mounting pressure from the U.S. auto safety regulator, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Under the recall, Goodyear dealers will be replacing the tyres installed on RVs along with providing consumers with $60 vouchers. The company is also offering a refund of $500 for tyres not installed on vehicles. The recall only applies to the firm’s G159 tyres of the size 275/70 R22.5.

The NHTSA opened a preliminary investigation into the tyres in 2017 to review allegations raised in lawsuits that some of the tires had defects causing RV (motorhome) crashes resulting in deaths and injuries. The safety regulator had asked the company to recall the tyres earlier this year though the company had declined the request at the time.

The company in a filing now said that it had now agreed to recall the tyres “to address concerns that some of these tires may still be in the marketplace or in use.” The company though has said that there were no safety defects in its product and cited that few if any remained on the road with the affected tyres last manufactured in 2003.

“While these tires are no longer being produced, some RV owners may have the tires on their vehicle, or set aside as a spare, and do not know. NHTSA urges anyone who owns, rents, or uses an RV or truck with 22.5-inch rims to ensure these tires are not in use on their vehicle,” the safety regulatory body said in a statement.

Additionally, in a separate recall demand latter, the NHTSA said that the company knew of the defect as far back as in 2002 but did not issue a recall.

  • Triumph Trident 660 recalled over weak kickstand

Triumph Trident 660 recalled over weak kickstand

Some 83 Triumph Trident 660 sportbikes were recalled in Vietnam since their kickstands may be prone to bending.

The units were made in Thailand between Feb. 7 and May 15 last year, according to Vietnam Register.

A representative of Triumph Vietnam said the kickstand of affected bikes had been manufactured with the use of an incorrect specification of raw material that causes it to bend over time.

This could result in the bike falling over if parked for extended periods.

Dealerships in Vietnam will replace the faulty component without any charge between May 30, 2022 and May 25, 2024.

Triumph Trident 660 was launched in Vietnam in early April, with a price tag of VND270 million ($11,640).

  • Tesla Delays Deliveries Of Long-Range Models In U.S.

Tesla Delays Deliveries Of Long-Range Models In U.S.

Tesla Inc is delaying U.S. deliveries of certain long-range models by up to a month, its website showed on Wednesday, as the electric-car maker tries to steer itself through supply-chain issues and disruptions in China operations.

New orders for Model Y will be delivered between December and March, Model 3 between September and December, and Model X between February and May next year, according to the updated dates on the company’s website.

It is likely that delays in production and shipment of components are slowing things down for Tesla, analysts have said.
  • Elon Musk Says Tesla AI Day Pushed To September 30

Elon Musk Says Tesla AI Day Pushed To September 30

“Tesla AI Day pushed to Sept 30, as we may have an Optimus prototype working by then,” he wrote on Twitter, almost two weeks after he announced the date of Aug. 19.

Optimus is a humanoid robot that Tesla is working on priority. Musk has previously said that it could be launched next year.

“Optimus could eventually address global shortages of labor, and in the short term might be able to carry items around a factory,” Musk had said in January.

This is Tesla’s second AI (artifical intelligence) Day, the first happened on Aug. 19, 2021.

Musk, in one of his tweets in May, also said that the purpose of the AI day is to convince great AI/software/chip talent to join Tesla.

  • Tesla Could Adopt Apple’s AirPlay To Improve In-Car Audio

Tesla Could Adopt Apple’s AirPlay To Improve In-Car Audio

Tesla has often bashed Apple with Elon Musk claiming that the Cupertino-based tech giant is a graveyard of ex-Tesla engineers. Tesla has also famously not adopted Apple’s phone streaming technology called CarPlay, but Elon Musk could be warming up to the idea of Apple’s Airplay audio streaming technology which works over Wi-Fi for gadgets like the Apple TV and HomePod.

Tesla’s audio system has often been well received by car enthusiasts and reviewers alike. Musk himself has claimed that many of the audio engineers at the company come from the iconic Danish audio company Bang & Olufsen (B&O) and said that sound systems have been engineered in such a way that they cost a fraction of what an actual B&O system would cost.

When a Twitter user asked the world’s wealthiest human if Tesla would consider adopting Apple’s AirPlay protocol which streams audio via Wi-Fi rather than Bluetooth opening avenues for high-resolution audio as the protocol has more bandwidth, Musk seemed open to the idea.

“Tesla audio engineers come from B&O & many other companies. They literally rock. Our system is highly programmable, so we keep improving it via OTA codec updates,” he said.

“Will discuss this and other improvements with Tesla audio engineering. The new Model S and X sound system is incredible,” he added.

Apple only recently opened up AirPlay for third party devices as now it doesn’t only have Apple Music as an audio streaming service, but it has a video service called Apple TV+ which works on Android TVs by brands like Samsung and Sony.

Tesla was also rumoured to be building a native app for Apple Music in 2021 but that never surfaced. Automakers have been often cagey about adopting platforms by tech majors as they feel the data they will share will eventually enable those majors to enter the auto industry as a rival as cars become more like computers with the advent of electrification, autonomy and connected car trends.

  • Vietnam runs out of luxury cars

Vietnam runs out of luxury cars

Many auto brands have no luxury cars to supply Vietnamese customers due to global semiconductor shortage.

Trung Kien, 33, from the northern province of Bac Ninh, said he has been looking for a luxury car with a price tag of around VND7 billion ($300,000) for a month, but found nothing to buy.

He said he would have to wait for three to six months to get a popular luxury car delivered, due to shortage of components, especially semiconductors and chips.

Over the last two years, supply from the world’s largest producer, China, has been trickling due to impacts of Covid-19, resulting in a global shortage.

Supply of luxury cars in Vietnam is hit the hardest, as brands focus on delivering orders to their major markets like the U.S. or European countries.

Mercedes-Benz customers are said to wait for at least three months for some SUVs and S-class sedans, and up to a year for the ultra-luxury Maybach sedans and SUVs.

Some locally made models, including E-class sedans and GLC SUVs, are also in short supply, so buyers will have to wait 1-2 months to get their unit delivered.

Many auto dealers are accepting deposits but not promising when they can deliver cars.

Vinh Nam, an experienced luxury car salesperson in HCMC, said customers have gotten used to the current shortage.

“They prioritize getting a car rather than a color of choice and other options”.

BMW used to have a fairly steady supply despite having to import vehicles, but in recent months supply has declined and buyers have to wait three to six months for delivery.

Buyers of Porsche, Lexus and Land Rover have the longest waiting time of 12-14 months depending on their choice of color and options, up from the earlier six to nine months.

Many buyers are impatient and as a result are not making deposits with dealers, while some are turning to the gray market.

The shortage of auto parts is also hurting buyers, with some brands raising their prices and cutting promotions.

Some models are being sold at above listed prices. A Land Cruiser LC300, for instance, is being offered at VND5.5 billion, 37.5 percent higher than the original price.

  • Porsche To Enter Pre-Owned Car Segment In India

Porsche To Enter Pre-Owned Car Segment In India

The pre-owned car segment is a lucrative market, especially for a luxury carmaker like Porsche as it prepares to open it’s first ‘Porsche Approved’ pre-owned car store in Kochi on June 8, 2022. Part of the Volkswagen Group, the Porsche Approved Centres joins VW’s Das WeltAuto, and Audi Approved Plus program as the German carmaker aims to strengthen its one-stop solution to buy, sell or exchange certified pre-owned cars. Porsche says buyers would get an exclusive opportunity to discover and experience Porsche cars in an innovative way. More details would be shared at the time of the launch of the new Porsche Approved centre.

Also Read: Volkswagen India Launches Das WeltAuto Excellence Centres For Pre-Owned CarsThe Porsche Approved centres will majorly focus on buying, selling, or exchanging pre-owned Porsche cars. Through this platform, the carmaker aims to provide competitively pricing for the used cars along with genuine accessories, insurance, and financial support to its customers. Porsche could also offer service and warranty packages.

At present, Volkswagen has close to 120 Das WeltAuto centres across India. Since its launch in 2019, VW sold close to 3,000 cars, while that figure crossed 10,000 in 2020. The number doubled in 2021 as the carmaker sold more than 20,000 units through its pre-owned car centres.  On the other hand, Audi India is ramping up its pre-owned car business “Audi Approved Plus” to enable buyers to upgrade without having to spend on a new luxury car. The company aims to start at least 20 such centres by the end of 2022, from its current 14 centres.

  • Skoda Slavia To Get Smaller Touchscreen In Equipment List Reshuffle

Skoda Slavia To Get Smaller Touchscreen In Equipment List Reshuffle

Skoda is set to give the Slavia an update in the coming weeks. As per some dealers we spoke to, Skoda is set to replace the 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system on the higher variants of the Slavia. The 10-inch head unit is set to be replaced by a smaller 8.0-inch unit said to be sourced from Panasonic. While we have not heard back from Skoda officially, the update could be due to the ongoing semi-conductor shortages affecting the automotive industry.

Additionally, some reports suggest that the top variants are also expected to miss out on wireless charging as well and it remains to be seen if the new unit will support wireless smartphone connectivity. Aside from the equipment update, the Slavia is also set to receive its first price hike next month with the quantum expected to be up to Rs 50,000. The Slavia was launched at introductory prices in India with the hike signifying an end to the introductory pricing period.

The Slavia has had a strong start in India for Skoda with over 14,000 bookings having been clocked since its launch in late February. The company also reported seeing stronger than anticipated demand for the 1.5 TSI model which has accounted for about 30 percent of overall bookings.

Skoda’s compact sedan was launched in India in late February 2022 with prices currently ranging from Rs 10.69 lakh to Rs 16.19 lakh (ex-showroom). There are two engine options on offer – a 114 bhp 1.0 TSI unit that is the mainstay of the range and the more powerful 148 bhp 1.5 TSI mill available only in the fully loaded model. Both units come with manual and automatic (DSG for the 1.5 TSI) gearbox options.

The Slavia goes up against the Honda City, Hyundai Verna and Maruti Ci
