  • Ride-hailing services back on the road in HCMC

Ride-hailing services back on the road in HCMC

Ride-hailing firms have resumed their services in HCMC at a significantly lower scale than pre-pandemic times.

Vietnam-based Be Group, which runs the eponymous ride-hailing app, has reopened its ride-hailing taxi service in Ho Chi Minh City with just 10 percent of its original fleet strength using 50 percent of its capacity.

The Be Group said its car-hailing service beCar has begun operating in HCMC again on Tuesday, with drivers being given several financial incentives.

Drivers who are online to receive a pick-up for a total of 48 hours will receive a support package worth VND1 million ($43.91).

The GrabCar service has been functioning since Oct. 7 with a limited number of drivers as decided by the municipal transport department.

GrabCar’s four-seaters can only carry one passenger per ride and a seven-seater can only carry two.

Meanwhile, Gojek’s four-wheel ride-hailing service GoCar is operating on a trial basis since Tuesday. In the first stage of implementation, GoCar will serve customers who have participated in surveys and registered to experience the service.

The service had been launched on Aug. 19 to provide free transportation for frontline medical workers to participate in epidemic prevention work.

From Oct. 1, operators of tech-platforms operating vehicles with less than nine seats have been permitted. They can only use 10 percent of their registered number of vehicles.

  • AirAsia to reopen all Malaysian routes, push for overseas flights

AirAsia to reopen all Malaysian routes, push for overseas flights

AirAsia sees brighter skies ahead after Malaysia lifted interstate travel restrictions, with the low-cost carrier also pushing to restart international flights to Thailand, Sri Lanka and the Maldives as early as next week, its president told Nikkei Asia.

Bo Lingam, AirAsia Group’s president for airline operations, said in an interview Monday that the company is “very relieved” with the government’s decision to reopen domestic borders as it will benefit both the carrier and its workforce.

The airline aims to go big on domestic travel by reaching a pre-pandemic capacity of 39 local routes and 169 daily flights by late November, according to Bo.

“We will open all domestic destinations that we were flying pre-COVID by the end of next month, involving over 45 aircraft,” he said.

The comments came after the federal government on Monday allowed interstate travel nationwide. The airline was hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, with hundreds of its employees retrenched and aircraft idled after domestic and international borders were closed and travel limited.

The government of Prime Minister Ismail Sabri fully reopened state borders in the Southeast Asian country for the first time this year, allowing millions of residents to travel for business and leisure. Fully vaccinated Malaysians can also head overseas without police approval.

Air travel is indispensable in Malaysia as the country’s states are spread across the Malay Peninsula as well as the island of Borneo to the east across the South China Sea.

“The resumption of domestic service will be extremely good financially, for the airline as we would be able to pay pending bills from our suppliers who have been very nice to us to date,” Bo said.

He added that the carrier is also looking to begin commercial international flights to Thailand, Sri Lanka and the Maldives as soon as next week.

“We have applied for permissions in these countries and expect to receive them next week, after which we can sell tickets and fly passengers,” he said.

AirAsia’s share price jumped almost 10% on Monday, settling at 1.28 ringgit — the highest since February 2020 and outpacing the Bursa Malaysia index’s gain of almost 1%. On Tuesday, the airline’s shares fell 3% to 1.25 ringgit at midday.

The airline’s net loss in 2020 ballooned to 5.1 billion ringgit ($1.2 billion) from red ink of 315.8 million ringgit in 2019. Revenue also plunged from 11.9 billion ringgit in 2019 to 3.1 billion ringgit last year.

For the first half of 2021, the airline reported a net loss of 1.3 billion ringgit from 1.8 billion ringgit net profit during the same period of last year. Revenue, meanwhile, tumbled to 686.8 million ringgit from 2.5 billion ringgit.

AirAsia was recently granted a federal government-guaranteed 500 million ringgit loan under a framework introduced to assist companies directly affected by the pandemic. The loan was part of the 2 billion ringgit fundraising exercise mooted by the airline’s founder Tony Fernandes last year.

The airline carried 19 million domestic passengers in 2019 but that plunged to 6.3 million last year. It has flown less than 1 million passengers between January and October this year as controls on movement were strengthened to curb the third and fourth waves of coronavirus infections.

Bo also said the airline would reinstate some 300 employees currently on furlough to operate the domestic flights. Since last year, the airline has reduced head count by not renewing contract workers, retrenchments and furloughs.

“We would exhaust employees under furlough first, then look at rehiring those we had laid off as the capacity grows,” he said.

Experts say that while the return of interstate travel is undoubtedly a plus for AirAsia and competitors including Malaysia Airlines, it is far from a panacea.

Brendan Sobie, an independent analyst at Sobie Aviation, believes domestic passenger traffic could approach pre-pandemic levels by the end of this year, though heavy competition and overcapacity — similar to the industry situation before the pandemic — will weigh on further growth for the carrier.

“All airlines in Malaysia were unprofitable in 2019 and while domestic demand may now recover, many of the issues from prior to the pandemic have not been resolved, making a return to profitability difficult,” he said.

Shukor Yusof, an aviation consultant at Endau Analytics said the surge in domestic travel demand would help AirAsia, though “it won’t be anywhere enough to fix its battered bottom line.”

While Shukor said the Malaysian travel resumption itself is not an indication of a revival for the airline industry in Southeast Asia, he does view AirAsia as the carrier with the best long-term potential for post-pandemic growth.

“It’s a critical stage as key countries for tourism — Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines — are still struggling to control the virus and there’s little coordination amongst ASEAN members to find a solution to allow intraregional air travel,” he said.

According to Sobie, Malaysian carriers need a recovery in both international and domestic travel to heal financially.

“There is now light at the end of the tunnel and the overall sentiment is more positive but the road to recovery will be long and filled with twists and turns,” he said. “The darkest days should be behind AirAsia but the outlook remains relatively challenging.”

  • Page Zoom is a new accessibility feature in Chrome for Android

Page Zoom is a new accessibility feature in Chrome for Android

Google is working on a new Page Zoom accessibility feature for its Chrome browser on mobile devices.

It appears that the reasoning behind this new feature is that text scaling on mobile devices produces variable results and often causes bugs. There’s a long thread on Chrome support forums concerning the issue, and it seems that Google developers have listened to the users and implemented the new Page Zoom feature.

Page Zoom works much like the zoom feature in the desktop version of Chrome. Once you choose a zoom level for a certain page it will be stored in the browser and next time you open the same page Chrome will automatically adjust the zoom level for you.

The feature is already available in Chrome Canary, and will probably roll out to Chrome for Android with the next stable release.

  • Gold price hits 12-month high

    Gold price hits 12-month high

Vietnam’s gold price climbed to a 12-month high Monday even as global prices dropped.

Prices at state-owned Saigon Jewelry Company rose 0.05 percent from Saturday to VND57.98 million ($2,552.79) per tael Monday. A tael equals 37.5 grams or 1.2 ounces.

Other companies sold their gold 0.17 percent higher at VND58 trillion, a 12-month high.

Vietnam’s gold price is now VND10 million higher than global rates, widening from VND8 million a month ago.

Global gold prices were subdued Monday over fears the U.S. Federal Reserve would start paring its stimulus this year despite Friday’s weak job data.

Spot gold inched 0.1 percent lower to $1,755.68 per ounce.

Spot gold may bounce into the $1,763-$1,768 range, before resuming its fall towards a support of $1,724, according to Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao.

Waze launches soothing experience to combat negative effects of driving

We live in a world where driving has become an activity that often affects our mental health. Traffic is probably in top three reasons for stress, and can many times lead to much worse effects, including back pain, depression, and even blood pressure.

To help combat these negative effects of driving, Waze launched a new Headspace experience that is meant to help drivers learn “how to find more joy and meaning on the road.” Headspace is a new Waze theme that provides users with custom navigation prompts from the mindfulness teacher and Director of Meditation, Eve Lewis Prieto.

There are five moods that can be selected when listening to the Headspace experience: Aware, Bright, Hopeful, Joyful, and Open. Also, the new theme allows users to swap out the in-car icon with an air balloon.

Equally important is the fact that drivers can stream a custom Spotify playlist with music and content from Headspace, which is also available via the Waze Audio Player. The Headspace experience is rolling out today and is available for a limited time in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese.

If you’re looking for a soothing driving experience, you can activate the new theme by tapping My Waze to find the “Drive with Headspace” banner.

  • Singapore to Expand Quarantine-Free Travel

    Singapore to Expand Quarantine-Free Travel

Following its announcement of more Vaccinated Travel Lanes (VTLs) on Saturday, the city-state has said it is working to expand travel to more countries, including its regional neighbors.

Singapore aims to reestablish the city-state as an international aviation hub with the expansion of its VTL scheme to more countries ahead of the year-end holidays.

From October 19, VTLs will be launched with Canada, Denmark, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States, with South Korea to be added on November 15. Singapore currently has VTLs with Germany and Brunei, launched September 8 under a pilot scheme.

Under the scheme, fully vaccinated travelers will be able to enjoy quarantine-free travel both ways. However, there is currently a limit of 3,000 arrivals under the scheme.

Pre-Covid, these countries accounted for about 10 percent of arrivals, Transport Minister S. Iswaran said on Monday.

These countries under the VTL scheme are «collectively an important set of partners» for Singapore, Iswaran said in an interview, noting that the countries have significant investments in Singapore and are among the top 20 trading partners, with sizeable business communities and families here.

We want to do more, but in a manner that is cautious and calibrated,» the minister said, adding that Singapore is currently in discussions with counterparts around the world, including its regional neighbors.

Since the announcement over the weekend, there has been a rush to secure tickets. Singapore Airlines’ website crashed on Saturday afternoon amid the surge in demand, while visitors to its service center at Ion Orchard had to wait in line for several hours.

  • Google wants you to think of its search app when it comes to breaking news

Google wants you to think of its search app when it comes to breaking news

Twitter, on the other hand, has been able to attract viewers looking for live coverage of breaking news. During such events, anyone with a smartphone can become a photojournalist sharing live video and audio from the scene. In 2015, Google and Twitter reached a deal that elevated tweets to the top of Google Search results for queries related to breaking news. Now, Google would like to be more like Twitter.

Inside the company, Google’s initiative is called Big Moments and is still considered an experiment. As such, Google isn’t saying exactly how it might display tweets covering breaking news in the future. A small group inside the Google Search team is working on Big Moments and the failure of Google Search to display relevant breaking news during the attack on the U.S. Capitol and the Black Lives Matter protests has insiders on the Google Search team working on ways to fix things.

“We are continually experimenting with ways to ensure that people who come to Google can find the most authoritative and up to date information when they need it,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement. “Any feature or improvement to our systems goes through a rigorous testing and evaluation process to ensure it delivers value to people.”

Early last year when word about COVID-19 started to be the big story almost every day, Google revised its Search format so that video and data from medical authorities stood out more in the results. This is what Google would like to do with other timely breaking news events. Still, Google argues that it is not a publisher and should be viewed as a platform.

The changes that Google wants to bring to Search include the addition of historical context to a story. In addition, Google would add information to a breaking news event that it doesn’t already include such as updating the most recent death and injury counts connected to a breaking news story, in real-time. Currently, those interested in news turn to Google Search after an event is over instead of heading to the app while the event is taking place.

Twitter has made itself one of the most visited sites during a breaking news event when the event is taking place. As we explained above, part of what makes Twitter so good with breaking news is the way live video from the scene of an event can be posted in seconds and those close to the event can obtain up-to-date information. Google hopes to catch up to Twitter with Big Moments which is being led by Elizabeth Reid, a senior executive who took over as the head of Search experiences in April.

Big Moments will use algorithms to make editorial decisions instead of having human editors make these decisions. The SearchEngine Journal said that using algorithms to curate news in real-time will be a big challenge for Google especially with stories that are “polarizing.” Google already comes under attack for showing bias is some search results and would probably have to deal with more critics complaining on the bigger news stage.

Google recently added a notice that appears on Search when a story is moving too quickly to appear on the Search app. The message says: “It looks like these results are changing quickly. If this topic is new, it can sometimes take time for results to be added by reliable sources.” In a situation like this, human curators would take too long to bring the story to Google which is why the company is using algorithms since the goal for the company is to get the latest news out as fast as possible.

  • Air tickets sell fast after domestic routes reopen

Air tickets sell fast after domestic routes reopen

National flag carrier Vietnam Airlines has sold more than 80 percent of seats on domestic flights after ticket sales opened Oct. 10.

Flights between Hanoi and HCMC, and HCMC and the central localities of Thanh Hoa and Hue, Hanoi and Da Nang, have been the most booked.

Flights on these routes are almost full on Oct 10-12, according to a Vietnam Airlines representative. One-way tickets on the Hanoi – HCMC and HCMC – Thanh Hoa routes cost VND3.5 million ($154) each; HCMC- Hue and Hanoi – Da Nang, VND2.4 million each.

“I have tried to book a flight back to Hanoi, but the Vietnam Airlines website informed me seats have already been fully booked till Oct. 13,” Bui Ngoc Quang, a quality assurance officer at the HCMC University of Social Sciences and Humanities said.

Quang said he wants to fly back to his hometown, a village in Hanoi’s outskirts, as soon as possible, because his wife had recently given birth to a girl baby, their first child, but he has been unable to meet them for weeks. In late August, aviation authorities had instructed airlines to stop selling tickets until further notice as the Covid-19 outbreak raged.

  • Viber rolls out disappearing messages feature in group chats

Viber rolls out disappearing messages feature in group chats

After surpassing one billion Google Play downloads worldwide, Viber announced a new feature that was previously available only for one-on-one chats: disappearing messages. Starting today, Viber is rolling out this option for group chats too.

More importantly, users won’t need to go through a multi-step process to change the status for messages in the group, as the feature has been implemented so that members can easily toggle it on and off right within the chat.

On top of that, Viber added new functionality to the feature, so users can now set messages in a group chat to disappear 10 seconds, one minute, one hour, or one day after being read. Furthermore, on devices running Android 6 and up, Viber will completely disable forwarding, copying, or taking a screenshot of a message when the disappearing option is enabled.

For those using older Android smartphones, as well as all iOS users, group chat members will be automatically notified if a member of the chat takes a screenshot of a message set to disappear. Although Viber personal and group chats are end-to-end encrypted, the new feature will surely add another layer of security for both Android and iOS users.

  • Reliance Retail to launch 7-Eleven stores in India after Future’s exit

Reliance Retail to launch 7-Eleven stores in India after Future’s exit

Reliance Industries Ltd’s retail arm said on Thursday it would roll out 7-Eleven convenience stores in India, days after Future Retail Ltd ended a similar deal with the US chain.

Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd will open the first 7-Eleven round-the-clock convenience store in a neighborhood in India’s financial capital of Mumbai on Oct 9.

The deal marks the latest by the Reliance Group, led by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, to rapidly expand its retail and e-commerce businesses to better compete with Amazon.com and Walmart Inc’s Flipkart in India’s nearly trillion-dollar retail market.

The oil-to-telecoms conglomerate’s US$3.4 billion deal for the retail assets of Future Group has been stalled following Amazon’s legal challenge.

Irving, Texas-based 7-Eleven, known for its iconic products including the Slurpee, operates and franchises more than 77,000 stores in 18 countries and regions.

Future Retail said on Tuesday it had mutually terminated an agreement with 7-Eleven as the companies were not able to meet targets of opening stores and paying franchise fees.

In 2019, Future Retail – India’s second-largest retailer with more than 1,700 stores, including the popular Big Bazaar supermarkets and local chains Food Hall and Nilgiris – had said it plans to set up 7-Eleven stores from scratch and convert some of its existing operations into the U.S. brand.

The unit formed to run 7-Eleven stores in India had reported a loss of 173 million rupees without opening any stores, Future Retail’s annual report showed.

Reliance’s shares rose 1.22 percent in morning trade, while Future Retail stock gained 3.7% in a strong market.

  • Watsons creates Sustainable Choices category with new products

Watsons creates Sustainable Choices category with new products

Surging consumer demand for sustainable products has prompted Hong Kong-headquartered health & beauty retailer Watsons to aggregate more than 1600 products into a Sustainable Choices category available both in physical stores and online.

A trial curation of sustainable products earlier this year saw sales of some products increase by 300 percent.

“This indicates clearly that customers are looking for sustainable products, hence it’s our mission to make them available and easy to browse for,” said AS Watson CEO for Asia and Europe, Malina Ngai.

“Many customers started to rethink their priorities due to the pandemic and they’re very much aware of the impact their choices have on the environment and society. We’ve been working closely with our strategic supplier partners to offer a wide range of Sustainable Choices products – everything from skincare to shampoo – making it easier for customers to make purchase decisions that contribute to a better world for all.”

Brand Partners in the initiative include Beiersdorf, GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, Kao, L’Oreal, Procter & Gamble, Reckitt, Shiseido, and Unilever.

The products are ranged in a dedicated Sustainable Choices section in stores and online. AS Watson told Inside Retail that the 1600+ products fit into one of four “pillars”: Clean Beauty, Refill, Better Ingredients, and Better Packaging.

A Clean Beauty brand is recognized by Watsons for using ingredients consumers trust will protect you, with additional environmental benefits and which support the local community.

In the refill pillar, products come with refill packs or in-store refilling stations to enable customers to keep using the original container.

Better Ingredients means the products’ manufacturers have chosen sustainable options in paper, sourced palm oil from “responsibly managed plantations” or have reduced plastic content in non-formulated products.

For Better Packaging, manufacturers must have chosen “better plastic” – such as recycled plastics – or a paper that has been sustainably sourced.

AS Watson has signed up to the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment to reduce plastic waste and has taken group membership of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil to help address the environmental impact of palm oil sourcing.

“We want to build a sustainable mindset and behavior together with our customers in their daily personal care and beauty needs. It’s the start of an exciting journey of a three-way partnership with our strategic supplier partners and our customers to make an impact,” said Ngai.

“The initial customer response is hugely encouraging, and we’re sure our customers will love our wider range of sustainable products.”

Meanwhile, Procter & Gamble has partnered with Watsons Hong Kong in a three-year commitment to reward customers with free gifts in return for bringing in empty personal-care plastic bottles from any brand for recycling. This program, called Plastic Reborn has already led to the recycling of 3400kg of plastic since February.

At Watsons Thailand stores, customers can recycle PET plastic bottles at a Garnier Refun Machine, earning a free Garnier Pink Micellar Water in return.

  • Future Group calls it quits on 7-Eleven India plans

Future Group calls it quits on 7-Eleven India plans

7-Eleven Inc and Future Retail have ended their agreement to operate convenience stores in India just two years after it was signed.

Reuters reports that the two companies arrived at a mutual decision to end the relationship, with Future Group failing to meet store rollout targets and the payment of franchise fees.

The original deal was revealed in February 2019 and in December that year Future Group founder and CEO Kishore Biyani said the firm would concentrate on development in Mumbai only for the initial few years of business, with the first outlets launching in March 2020.

He said the company planned to open 1000 7-Eleven stores in the city before moving out into other regions of the country after two to three years.

However Indian news sources reported last year that the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic had delayed the implementation of the franchise agreement.

In a statement, Future Group said the termination would have no financial or business impact on the company.
