  • Fossil to launch new Emporio Armani, Diesel and Michael Kors smartwatches

Fossil to launch new Emporio Armani, Diesel and Michael Kors smartwatches

Each year Fossil refreshes its stylish lineup of smartwatches with new models that feature updated hardware and, sometimes, different designs. This is year is no exception and a new set of Fossil wearable devices are expected to arrive as early as fall.

A fairly sizable number of unannounced Fossil smartwatches have been recently spotted at FCC, and their codenames have been deciphered by Droid-life as belonging to brands like Michael Kors, Emporio Armani, and Diesel. There’s also one Fossil-branded smartwatch among those listed at FCC, but there might be additional ones that haven’t popped up yet at the Federal Communications Commission.

Along with the listing of their codenames, we also have some pictures showing the Wear OS app drawer and settings, but aside from that, no exciting new info revealed in the documentation filed at FCC.

We’re not even sure whether or not these will be equipped with Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Wear 3100 chipset, which would be an upgrade from the current Fossil smartwatch. The good news is we’ll most likely learn more about Fossil’s upcoming smartwatches pretty soon now that they’ve been listed at FCC.
  • Second generation Apple AirPods had weaker than expected sales in Q1

Second generation Apple AirPods had weaker than expected sales in Q1

Apple’s AirPods continue to dominate the true wireless “hearables” category with a larger than 50% market share. However, the second generation of the extremely popular accessory did not add to Apple’s already huge share of this market. According to the information made public by Counterpoint Research, despite launching the latest version of its AirPods during the quarter, “Apple’s market share remained at the same level seen in the last quarter, failing to grow in spite of the launch of its second generation AirPods.” Of course, the new AirPods weren’t announced by the tech giant until March 20th, nearly at the end of the three-month period.

The second generation AirPods replaced the W1 chip employed on the original version with an H1 chip for improved Bluetooth connectivity. It also lowered the strain on the battery, allowing Apple to promise 50% longer “talk time,” and allows users to switch between devices while listening to music up to two times faster. And Siri can now be summoned by saying “Hey Siri.” The update also added a new carrying case for the AirPods that will charge wirelessly. If the upcoming 2019 iPhone models feature reverse wireless charging as rumored, the new case will be able to sit on the back of one of the new units and power up. Of course, this will come at the expense of the battery inside the host iPhone.

Counterpoint noted that thanks to sales promotions run to clear out inventory, sales of the first-gen AirPods were higher than expected during the quarter. Sales of the second generation AirPods were weaker than expected. Some of that could be due to confusion among consumers, many of whom expected the new buds to be water-resistant and feature a new grip to keep them firmly planted in users’ ears. Those rumors and others about some sort of health care feature for the accessory and a new Black color option were well publicized prior to the unveiling of the new version. As it turns out, these are features that we will probably see when the third generation AirPods come out later this year. Most likely, many consumers are holding off on purchasing the new AirPods and are awaiting the next version of the device.

“Apple’s market share remained at the same level seen in the last quarter, failing to grow in spite of the launch of its second generation AirPods. While sales of the first generation AirPods were higher than expected thanks to a variety of sales promotions for stock-outs in the channel in Q1 2019, sales of the new model were weaker than initially expected due to the market’s mixed response.”-Counterpoint Research

The graphs released by Counterpoint didn’t include any actual percentages, but we can see from the graphs that Apple’s AirPods have a huge lead over the second place Samsung Galaxy Buds. Samsung’s wireless “hearables” were launched earlier this year and were handed out as a bonus to those purchasing a phone from the Galaxy S10 line. That promotion, by the way, is back until June 30th. The Galaxy Buds replaced the Gear IconX in Sammy’s lineup and helped the company leap over Jabra to take second place for the first time. The Jabra Elite Active 65t was third.

Later this year, we should see two more heavyweights enter the market. Both Amazon and Microsoft are planning to release their own wireless Bluetooth earbuds this year. The former says that its device will be equipped with Alexa and will sound better and cost less than Apple’s AirPods. Microsoft’s Surface Buds will include Cortana integration.

During the first quarter of this year, Counterpoint says that the size of what it calls the “true wireless wearables” market was 17.5 million units. That is a 40% gain sequentially from the fourth quarter of 2018. That is impressive because Q4 of 2018 included the holiday shopping season.

  • Upcoming free app for the Apple iPad might turn you into the next Michelangelo

Upcoming free app for the Apple iPad might turn you into the next Michelangelo

Adobe announced that its drawing and painting app for the iPad originally called “Project Gemini,” will be known as Adobe Fresco when it launches later this year. Fresco is an old technique used for hundreds of years that involves painting on wet plaster. It requires the artist to complete the painting before the plaster dries. That type of “spontaneous creativity” is at the center of Adobe Fresco. The app will first be available for iPads with Apple Pencil support, which means that users can unleash their creativity wherever they are. Eventually, Fresco will be offered for other stylus supporting touchscreen devices.

The app uses Adobe’s AI-based Sensei platform for the Live Brushes feature. This allows users to “paint” on the app using watercolors and oils and experience the same response as a painter would in real life. Adobe says that those using the app can even paint with virtual water to dilute colors. The company has gone to the trouble of determining how certain paint pigments interact on different types of surfaces and has recreated these experiences for the Adobe Fresco app.

Brushes used in Photoshop can also be employed in Adobe Fresco and users have access to digital brushes from the artist and digital brush creator Kyle Webster. The app is equipped with vector brushes to allow the artist to “create clean, crisp, and infinitely scaleable lines and shapes.” And users will be able to create their own brushes thanks to Adobe Capture.

“Drawing is fundamental to developing creative literacy. It is most people’s first connection to creativity, and every great painting, sculpture, film, or building began with a drawing. And today, more than ever, it’s essential for everyone to develop creative literacy. As artificial intelligence takes over more and more repetitive and mundane tasks, creativity is the unique human quality that sets each of us apart and helps us succeed.

Connecting brain and hand through drawing unlocks creative magic. To forge that connection, a digital generation needs a digital tool, which is why we’re developing a powerful and sophisticated drawing and painting application.”-Adobe

While Fresco will have professional features like layers, masking, and selection, Adobe points out that the app has what it calls a “streamlined” interface that even children can use. And Fresco users will be able to move their project between the app and Photoshop seamlessly. The art can also be exported to PDF where it can be edited using Adobe Illustrator.

Whether you’re a professional artist or just sketch for a hobby, Adobe Fresco is all about creating. The app will be free and if you’re an iPad user, you can submit a request to try the beta version of the app by registering here.

  • New feature in iOS 13 could save money

New feature in iOS 13 could save money

Ever delete an app from your iOS device, not realizing that you’re still paying a monthly fee to use it? It appears that Apple feels your pain. In iOS 13, if you delete an app, you will see a pop-up reminder if you have an active subscription to that app. A screenshot taken from an iPad running the second beta preview of iOS 13; the pop-up reminder can be seen on the screen asking, “Do you want to keep your subscription for this app?”

The reason why this feature comes in handy is because you might delete an app and forget that you re paying a monthly subscription fee to use it. If you don’t cancel the subscription, you’ll continue paying monthly for a service that you no longer want. And to make sure that you don’t get charged for another month, the pop-up message tells you the next date when your credit card will be automatically used to renew the subscription. Of course, you can cancel your subscription no later than the day before your renewal date. The reminder also notes that if you delete the app but keep the subscription, the service can still be used on other devices.

So let’s say that you subscribe to Hulu, paying $5.99 a month. You’re going through your iOS device and decide to delete the app, forgetting that you’re making that monthly payment automatically. If Apple keeps this new feature, before you tap that button to uninstall the app, you will see the pop-up reminding you that if you’re really cutting ties with the service, you might want to cancel your subscription. And the reminder also includes a link that takes you to your iOS subscriptions.

Even though the iPad will have its own OS later this year, we would imagine that this feature will most likely be available for both iOS and iPadOS.

  • Apple Watch cuts more ties with the iPhone in latest watchOS 6

Apple Watch cuts more ties with the iPhone in latest watchOS 6

VentureBeat’s Jeremy Horwitz discovered something interesting on his Apple Watch when he installed watchOS 6 Developer beta 2 on the device. There are indications that with the latest watchOS build, the wearable will be able to directly load OTA updates without having to go through an Apple iPhone. It’s another cut in the umbilical cord that connected the Apple Watch to the iPhone when the timepiece was first released in 2015. If you’re running the latest Developer beta of watchOS, you can see how the timepiece can run OTA updates through the settings menu by going to Settings > General > Software Update.

The first cut in the cord came with the release of the Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular), which allowed users to make and take calls, reply to messages and receive notifications on the device even if they left their iPhone at home. Before the latest beta update, Apple Watch users needed to open the Watch app on their iPhone in order to complete the updating process.

So this seems to be good news for those fighting for the independence of the Apple Watch. We say “seems” because for now, even if you install a software update directly from your smartwatch’s settings menu, you have to read and accept the watchOS terms and conditions from your iPhone before starting the update. That seems a little contradictory for a feature that is designed to wean Watch users off their handsets, so we have our fingers crossed that this is something that will be figured out before the final version of watchOS 6 is disseminated.

When updating directly from the Apple Watch, the timepiece needs to be connected to Wi-Fi and resting on its charger. Once the battery is charged up to the 50% level, the update will begin.

The next build of watchOS will feature new watch faces. Many new watch faces, according to Apple. In fact, the company says that there will be “more new faces since the very first Apple Watch.” The big news, of course, is that there will be an App Store for the Apple Watch that will host independent apps for the device. And Apple is adding some new apps for the wearable including Audiobooks, Voice Memos, and Calculator. The new Trends feature will allow Apple Watch users to get a longer-term view of their activity stats ranging from a 90-day look to a full year. If the trend shows a healthy increase in activity, that will be good for a user; if the trend shows that the Apple Watch owner is slacking off, the timepiece will pass along some hints on how to get back on track.

The update will also alert someone if they are in danger of damaging their hearing because of some loud surrounding noises. This is done by having the microphone on the Apple Watch turn on every now and then to measure ambient sounds. If the sound registers over 80dB, the Apple Watch will show a warning. The update to watchOS 6 will also include a setting allowing your timepiece to “chime” at the top of each hour while the Taptic engine will produce a vibration at the same time. And lastly, with the latest build of Apple’s smartwatch operating system, women will be able to track the time every month when they are most fertile and more likely to get pregnant. This is actually good news for Apple. The more children that are born in homes where Apple products are prevalent, the more future customers the company can count on.

  • Apple’s Shazam app updated with new Pop Up functionality

Apple’s Shazam app updated with new Pop Up functionality

Recently acquired by Apple, Shazam is bringing new features to its users, although this time only Android users will benefit from the changes. A new Pop Up functionality has just been added to Shazam for Android, which will allow users to identify songs playing in third-party apps without having to leave the app.

In order to benefit from the new feature, you’ll have to enable a new floating button that is overlaid on the screen. When the new button is enabled, you will see a persistent notification in the notification drawer, which can be used to trigger it. Whenever you wish to use Shazam to identify a song, simply tap on the Pop Up floating button.

Of course, you will be able to dismiss both the button and the persistent notification by simply dragging the button at the lower part of the screen to make it disappear. If you want to make the persistent notification go away, you will have to switch off feature from the Shazam settings menu or by swiping down the notification and tap on Turn Off.

The new Pop Up functionality is available in the latest version of Shazam for Android, which has already been uploaded in the Google Play Store. If you have the app installed, a new update should be available for download.

  • The iPhone XR 2 may have the best battery life of any iPhone

The iPhone XR 2 may have the best battery life of any iPhone

Tucked in an electronics industry report about the supplier of batteries for the upcoming iPhone XR sequel we find the actual capacity of the pack in the tentatively named XR 2. The source muses that Apple may be done with hardware and iOS optimizations, and seems to be now betting on larger battery packs to make its phones last longer on a charge, just like Samsung or Huawei are doing.

The iPhone XR 2 battery pack orders are reportedly granted to China’s ATL (Amperex) which are the same guys that got the order for non-exploding Galaxy Note 7 packs after the infamous Samsung SDI batteries started catching on fire. The new battery capacity is said to be 3110 mAh, which would make the iPhone XR’s successor with the largest single-cell battery pack in an iPhone ever.
While this is just a 5% increase over the 2942 mAh capacity in the iPhone XR, the XR 2 is also expected to come with Apple’s A13 processor made with a second generation 7nm process that should reduce battery draw further.
Coupled with the new pack and the frugal display resolution, the iPhone XR (2019) should therefore last longer on a charge than the already best in that regard iPhone XR. It scored more than 11 hours of screen-on time in our grueling test, ahead of any iPhone we have tested so far. The XR 2 may very well break the 12-hour mark which would place it in a special endurance club of its own, and not only among phones in the iOS camp.
Here’s how the iPhone XR (2019) may look like, as rendered by graphics artist Hasan Kaymak based on rumors, leaked CAD drawings, and analyst expectations.
  • iMovie for iOS now has a green screen feature

iMovie for iOS now has a green screen feature

The new feature allows you to take footage recorded against a green screen (a blue screen will also work) and easily replace the background while keeping the subject. You can adjust the strength of the effect and adjust it precisely with a 4-point mask.
In addition to that, you can now also import images with a transparent background in your project, and also use photos to create a picture-in-picture effect or a split-screen effect in your video projects. Add to this 80 new soundtracks that automatically adjust to fit the length of your video project, adds support for ClassKit so students can deliver assignments easily to their teachers and delivers a few bug fixes along the way.
This is a big update to one of the best casual video editing apps out there, and considering that iOS 13 will also add features like rotating video, this will solidify Apple’s leading positions when it comes to video editing on mobile devices.
And here is a full list of the new features that come with this update:
    • Transform your video with the new green screen effect that lets you instantly remove the background of clips shot in front of a green or blue screen
    • Adjust the green screen effect with a 4-point mask and strength slider
    • Choose from 80 new soundtracks in genres including pop, chill, and sentimental that automatically adjust to match the length of your movie
    • Drop in still images with transparent backgrounds to use as logos or custom graphics on top of your video

    • Resolves an issue that could lead to a black viewer when previewing your video fullscreen on an external display
  • Amazon listed as most valuable brand

Amazon listed as most valuable brand

E-commerce giant Amazon has clinched the top spot in the world’s most valuable brand ranking, surpassing Google and Apple, according to a recently released ranking of global companies.

The Seattle-based retailer has been valued at US$315.5 billion, up 52 per cent on last year with tech giant Apple coming in second, valued at $309.5 billion and Google in third place at $309 billion, Brand Z’s Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brand 2019 ranking (compiled by WPP research agency Kantar) revealed.

Google and Apple had spent a combined 12 years at the top of Brand Z’s list, with Google taking the top spot last year.

“Amazon’s smart acquisitions that have led to new revenue streams, excellent customer service provision and its ability to stay ahead of its competitors by offering a diverse ecosystem of products and services, have allowed Amazon to continuously accelerate its brand value growth,” Brand Z’s report indicated.

Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba has overtaken Tencent for the first time to become the most valuable Chinese brand, moving up two places to number seven, growing 16 per cent to $131.2 billion.

Tencent dropped three places to number eight, declining by 27 per cent to $130.9 billion year-on-year.
Social media platform Facebook has retained its sixth spot while Instagram, at number 44, was named as this year’s fastest riser, climbing 47 places with a massive 95 per cent growth in brand value with $28.2 billion.

Athleisure retailer Lululemon was named the second fastest riser, showing a 77 per cent growth year-on-year to $6.92 billion.

“We’re seeing a move from individual product and service brands to a new era of highly-disruptive ecosystems,” said David Roth, CEO of The Store WPP EMEA and Asia and chairman of Brand Z.

“Brands need to understand the value this type of model can create and should embrace its approach to be successful in the future,” Roth said.

  • Apple’s new Reminders app dark theme leaks out

Apple’s new Reminders app dark theme leaks out

Google slowly introduced us to the systemwide dark mode in Android Q by painting its own apps in morbid colors on a piecemeal basis. It brushed over the Phone app, Contacts, Calendar, Keep notes, you name it.

Apple, however, will be going all out with the iOS 13 dark mode, it seems, theming the launcher, toggles and system settings, as well as its stock apps. While we already rendered what dark mode would look like on iOS, based on some leaked info, we now have a real preview of one Apple default app’s dark theme.

The difference with the current rendering of the Reminder app is pretty striking, yet in sync with the dark theming that has been sweeping the industry lately, and now Apple is following suit with its own take on the matter. Gawk at what’s about to be unveiled just a few short hours from now.

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2019 takes place June 3-7 in San Jose, and starts with a keynote later this morning at 10 AM Pacific Time where a bunch of new software updates – iOS 13, watchOS 6 and tvOS 13 – are to be introduced.

  • Apple purges iTunes pages on the eve of its demise

Apple purges iTunes pages on the eve of its demise

Apple’s arguably most hated piece of legacy software – iTunes – may be killed today at the WWDC keynote, reported Bloomberg over the weekend, and the interesting part is that it won’t be renamed to something else, but different modules will be taking its place instead.

The iTunes syncing and download service is a relic of the past anyway, and will be phased out as Apple’s CEO Tim Cook will be announcing a move away from the iPhone as the centerpiece of the company’s strategy.

The Apple Watch will reportedly gain more independence from the iPhone, the iPad will be getting new software that will aim to close the gap with laptops, and Apple will be pushing its new healthcare solutions, according to the report. Anything but the iPhone.

The transition might not be finished for a couple of years, but this is the strongest push Apple has made toward the unification of its two platforms. Apple and developers can put more effort into one version of things instead of having to build everything twice.

With Watch OS 6, the company is eventually going to introduce a dedicated App Store, compartmentalize messaging, and add stock utility apps of the everyday type like a calculator or a voice recorder that will make you keep the iPhone in your pocket for longer while using the Watch.

One of the slower and more cumbersome to use of Apple’s legacy software, the jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none iTunes will be replaced with apps that now duplicate its functionality. Instead of using it for watching videos, or listening to music and podcasts, Apple’s new Music, TV, and Podcasts apps for the Mac will be taking over. What about shuttling files to and from and managing the phone, though, what iTunes used to do?

Well, those functions will reportedly be taken over by the new Music app, of all things. Apple even started purging the iTunes accounts on Instagram, Facebook and the like, indicating the ancient software’s imminent demise. Good riddance?

  • Samsung and Apple phone business still going down

Samsung and Apple phone business still going down

The latest report from Gartner shows global smartphone sales declined 2.7% in the first quarter of 2019. The fallout continues for both Apple and Samsung, each recording quarter one revenue of 17.6% and 8.8% respectively. The other smartphone maker, Huawei, despite a lack of presence in the US, is the only vendor in the top three rankings that reported positive growth across all regions, growing 44.5% with shipment totaling 58.4 million units.

“Demand for premium smartphones remained lower than for basic smartphones, which affected brands such as Samsung and Apple that have significant stakes in high-end smartphones,” said Anshul Gupta, senior research director at Gartner. “In addition, demand for utility smartphones declined as the rate of upgrading from feature phones to smartphones has slowed, given that 4G feature phones give users great advantages at a lower cost.”

Slowing innovation in flagship smartphones and rising prices continued to extend replacement cycles. The two countries that sell the most smartphones, namely the US and China, saw sales decline by 15.8% and 3.2%, respectively, in the first quarter of 2019.

Huawei’s fortunes are in question, however, as news of the pullout of its licensing by Google of the Android operating platform, have seen a stoppage by retailers of Huawei-branded smartphones.

“Unavailability of Google apps and services on Huawei smartphones, if implemented, will upset Huawei’s international smartphone business which is almost half of its worldwide phone business. Not the least it brings apprehension among buyers, limiting Huawei’s growth in the near term,” said Gupta.

Rounding out the top five are the two other Chinese brands – Oppo and Vivo, each reporting an increase in unit shipments in the first quarter. Falling off the top five is Xiaomi which, Gartner estimate, shipped 27.2 million units – 200,000 thousands unit fewer than Vivo.

  • iPhones are getting too Big

    iPhones are getting too Big

Back when Apple’s iPhones were following the iPhone 6 design, they were considerably thinner than they are today. I remember when the immensely hyped iPhone X came out, with its brand new super-luxurious design and everything, the first thought that crossed my mind was: “Wow, that thing is beautiful!” And then that thought was quickly followed by another: “It’s also so… thick?!” because I was comparing it to the One year later, Apple kept the same exact design with the iPhone XS and XS Max, but also released the mainstream XR, which was even bulkier! The iPhone XR is my daily driver, and if I could change anything in it, making it thinner and lighter would have easily been in the top three. I think iPhones have slowly gotten a bit too fat and heavy!

I came to this realization after playing around with the OnePlus 5T for a few days. Compared to the XR, the OnePlus 5T is about as wide and even taller, but it’s so much thinner and lighter. This made it feel surprisingly good while holding and using it. It also gets thinner towards the edges, which I think is also a good design choice, both from an ergonomic and aesthetic point of view. It’s similar to what Apple’s doing with the iMac, but the iPhone does not have such a curve – it remains “full fat” all the way to the edges. Maybe part of the reason is that iPhones have glass backs now, to facilitate wireless charging, but this also seems to be contributing to the increased thickness and weight.

The iPhone XR is also very heavy. I wouldn’t call it excessive, but it is very substantial. Some people appreciate their phones having some heft, but there’s a line that shouldn’t be crossed because then the user starts to subconsciously avoid reaching for the phone.

This brings us back to the beginning and the question of having a thin and light phone versus a thick and heavy phone with better battery life. The iPhone XR does have superb battery life, to the point that I pay almost no attention to my battery levels – I just put it on the charger whenever I remember to do so.

But you know what: I’d love to trade some of that battery for reduced thickness and weight. There’s just something effortless in handling a phone like the OnePlus 5T; it makes you want to put your hands on it more often, even if you don’t have a specific reason to do so. Now, I can’t switch to OnePlus, because of my broader needs and principles, which are best answered by the Apple ecosystem (plus newer OnePlus phones are also thicker), but I think it’d be great if the next iPhone design cuts out some of the fat for that desirable elegance that was typical of previous generations. Maybe then consumers will start lusting after each new iPhone like they used to.

Second Apple Taiwan store about to Open

Apple Taiwan is to open its second store, in Taipei’s Xinyi District.

The firm is in the early stages of planning, although has released an image of the intended look of the new store that resembles its Chicago flagship.

Apple’s first official store in Taiwan opened in the Taipei 101 mall, although the majority of its products are sold via its online channel and through local authorized resellers.

Comments online following the announcement suggested significant hopes that Apple will next open an official store outside Taipei.

Apple Taiwan issued a teaser image of the new store (above), a rare move for the company, which rarely reveals details of store developments to the press.

  • Apple iOS 12.3.1 update released to fix iMessage and VoLTE issues

Apple iOS 12.3.1 update released to fix iMessage and VoLTE issues

Apple has just released another iOS update, which addresses a couple of issues that many iPhone users have complained of lately. If you’re rocking an iPhone as your daily driver, you should be able to see a notification on your device letting you know that you can download iOS 12.3.1, the latest firmware software released by Apple.

As far as the contents of the update go, Apple says that iOS 12.3.1, which was released just two weeks after iOS 12.3, addresses an issue that could prevent iPhone users from making or receiving VoLTE (voice over LTE) calls.

Also, the update fixes many of the problems in the Messages app, including those that could cause messages from unknown senders to pop up in one’s conversation list even though the Filter Unknown Senders option is enabled.

Another Messages fix should solve another bug with Messages, which could prevent the Report Junk link from appearing in the app’s threads from unknown senders.

In other news, Apple is gearing up for the next major iOS 13 updates. Keep in mind though that Apple hasn’t yet confirmed anything about iOS 13, so take it with a tint of salt until the update is announced.
