  • WhatsApp close to adding fingerprint locking feature to Android app

WhatsApp close to adding fingerprint locking feature to Android app

WhatsApp is quietly testing new ways to make its mobile app more secure. The latest addition to the Android app could be the fingerprint locking feature, which is now being tested in the beta channel.

WhatsApp has been working on the fingerprint locking feature for quite a few months now, but the new function is not yet ready for prime time. Previously known as Authentication or Screen Lock, the new feature can be enabled from the Settings menu under the Account / Privacy tabs.

Keep in mind though that you will still be able to reply to messages directly from notifications, as well as answer WhatsApp calls since the app will only ask you for authentication when you want to open WhatsApp.

Fingerprint lock will also allow users to choose when they must authenticate to use the app, but they can also choose when exactly WhatsApp will automatically lock after use: immediately, after 1 minute, after 30 minutes.

For the time being, the new feature is available only in WhatsApp for Android beta, although you need version 2.19.221 or newer to find it in the Settings menu. If everything goes well during tests, Fingerprint Lock might be deployed to all Android users in the next couple of weeks.

  • Audi India To Launch Q8 SUV In 2019

Audi India To Launch Q8 SUV In 2019

It might have been a very slow start to 2019 for Audi India, but the second half of the year brings in a burst of action. Audi has announced that it will launch 4 cars in India by the end of 2019 and as we told you earlier, it will all start with the launch of the new generation of the A6. But the Q8 Coupe- SUV will soon join the line-up. The Audi Q8 will be the company’s first coupe-SUV from the Ingolstadt-based carmaker and will be the range-topping model in Audi’s Q line-up, which was up until now led by the Audi Q7. The Q8 will be launched in India during the festive season, so expect it to be here by October or November this year.

The new Audi Q8 is built on the same aluminum-rich platform that underpins the like of the Audi Q7, the Lamborghini Urus and the Bentley Bentayga. In terms of dimensions, the Audi Q8 measures 4999 mm in length, 2011 mm in width and 1710 mm in height, which makes the Coupe-SUV wider, shorter and lower than its Q7 sister model. Visually, the Q8 comes with an imposing stance accentuated by the bold and aggressive face which comes with a large single-frame grille with fat borders with both vertical and horizontal slats that come with chrome highlights. The grille is flanked by a pair of sleek LED headlamps with HD Matrix LED technology available as an option and 3D-effect daytime running lamps. The front bumper comes with a beefy skid plate and large air intakes, while the sloping bonnet features prominent character lines adding to the muscular look of the new Q8.

The rear section comes with roof-mounted spoiler and wide LED taillamps with a digital character, which are connected by a light strip creating the impression of one single unit. The rear bumper looks well-designed and features a mesh design element that houses the sensors, while below we have the rear skid plate and styling inserts finished in dark chrome.

On the equipment front, the SUV features a host of tech like adaptive cruise assist, efficiency assist, crossing assist, lane change warning, curb warning and 360-degree cameras. One highlight is the remote garage pilot, which will come in early 2019, allows the drive to guides the SUV into a garage and back out again autonomously, and all can be done by the myAudi app on their smartphone. Behind all of these features is the central driver assistance controller. It continuously computes a differentiated model of the surroundings and uses this to manage the assistance systems. The required data are obtained – depending on the selected options – from up to five radar sensors, six cameras, twelve ultrasound sensors and the laser scanner.

The Q8 will get a 3.0-litre V6 TDI in the Q8 50 TDI variant delivering 286 bhp and 600 Nm of torque, which are channelled to all four wheels through an eight-speed tiptronic automatic transmission and Audi’s Quattro AWD system. Later the Q8 will also get a less-powerful 3.0 TDI and a 3.0 TFSI petrol variant offering 340 bhp.

  • Gull continues CEO search

    Gull continues CEO search

The leader of Caltex Australia for the past decade has announced his upcoming retirement.

Managing director and chief executive Julian Segal, who started at the petrol and convenience business in 2009, will stay on board until a suitable replacement is found.

Caltex chairman Steven Gregg said Segal has made significant contributions to the company during his tenure.

“Julian has delivered outstanding outcomes for Caltex’s shareholders, improving operational and financial performance and steering the company through a number of challenges and transitions,” Gregg said.

“We are pleased that Julian will continue to work to execute our strategy and ensure continuity of leadership as we implement plans to find his successor.”

Julian oversaw major milestones in the petrol business, such as the closure of the Kurnell refinery, the establishment of Ampol Singapore, our expansion into New Zealand and the Philippines, and developing Caltex’s international fuel sourcing and supply chain, as well as driving an improved convenience offer in Australia.

According to Gregg, Segal will be leaving an agile and resilient Caltex that is poised for further growth.

Segal said leading the business has been an honour, and that he is committed to leading the business through the search for his replacement.

“I am proud of what’s been achieved for shareholders, customers, employees and our community partners,” Segal said.

“Caltex’s strength has always been its ability to adapt and transform and the company has an exciting future. I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues to deliver the Caltex strategy as the Board works through the succession process.”

Caltex will deliver its half-year results later this month. It expects group earnings before interest and tax to be just $120-140 million, compared to the $443 million it reported in the 2018 half, due to difficult conditions rising from a slowing Australian economy.

  • Venmo borrows popular PayPal feature to expand on its Instant Transfer capabilities

Venmo borrows popular PayPal feature to expand on its Instant Transfer capabilities

PayPal has been doing pretty much everything in its power to keep the likes of Apple Pay at bay in the increasingly competitive online and mobile payment market, joining forces with Google on a number of mutually advantageous initiatives, vastly improving its main app, and making it easier and faster to transfer funds to a US bank account.

Of course, the company’s arsenal includes a popular special weapon in Venmo, the 2009-released digital payments system that PayPal acquired in 2013 as part of Braintree. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that PayPal is attempting to unify the user experience across its multiple services in a way, adding the aforementioned Instant Transfer feature to Venmo’s already robust list of strengths.
While Venmo picked up a similar functionality for both iOS and Android devices last year, that only allowed its users to send money to Visa and Mastercard debit cards “within minutes.” Now it’s possible to do the same for actual bank accounts, and once again, the only restriction you need to take into consideration is geographical. Otherwise, you’re looking at (almost) instant transfers in the US for a 1 percent fee that can’t exceed $10 or go under $0.25.
If that feels too rich for your blood, fret not, as the free standard bank transfer option isn’t going anywhere. Just remember that might keep you waiting up to three whole business days. Depending on your bank, an “instant” transfer from Venmo could take up to 30 minutes as well, but unless your funds are frozen for some reason, you will never have to wait a second longer. The feature is being slowly rolled out to iPhones and Android handsets with the latest app version, which means it could take a few weeks before “wide” availability is achieved.
  • Serious flaws have been discovered in WhatsApp

Serious flaws have been discovered in WhatsApp

During the Black Hat security conference held last week in Las Vegas, security researchers at Check Point discussed several flaws that they found in popular messaging app WhatsApp. The latter, as many of you probably already know, was acquired by Facebook in 2014 for a price north of $21 billion. One of the features that drive users to WhatsApp is its use of end-to-end encryption; this means that a message posted by a user cannot be read by anyone but the recipient. Even Facebook can’t see the message. But the flaws found by Check Point have some serious consequences for users.

The security team noted that one of the flaws it found in WhatsApp could allow a hacker to not just read a message sent by a member, but change the message as well. I would imagine that we don’t have to tell you the implications of this. Another flaw could allow a hacker to attribute a message to another person instead of the actual sender. Again, we don’t have to spell out the chaos that could result should some attacker actually exploit this vulnerability. After all, WhatsApp has over 1.5 billion users in more than 180 countries. By 2021, WhatsApp is expected to have 25.6 million users in the states.
Check Point also discovered that yet another flaw in WhatsApp could allow a hacker to disguise a public message as a private message. This could lull the recipient into thinking that his or her response will be private when in fact, it would be visible to others. When Check Point originally discovered these three issues last year and pointed them out to Facebook, the company was able to fix this particular problem although the first two flaws remain available for what Check Point calls “threat actors.”
So keep in mind that just because WhatsApp has end-to-end encryption, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t any flaws that can’t be exploited for evil reasons.
  • Falling spend by mainland Chinese lowers Sogo sales

Falling spend by mainland Chinese lowers Sogo sales

Sogo department store parent Lifestyle International has been impacted by falling spending by mainland Chinese visitors and the early stages of the extradition bill protests.

Direct sales at the group’s two stores in Causeway Bay and Tsim Sha Tsui were down 2.8 percent in the six months to June, while total gross sales, including those of concessions, fell by 2.4 percent.

Executive director Lau Kam Shim said China’s economic slowdown and global political uncertainties cast a damper on the consumer spending during the six months to June. Sogo Causeway Bay recorded a 4.8-per-cent decline in sales after footfall decreased 3.7 percent, however, the average ticket size at the store remained stable at approximately $910. He said the anti-extradition protests that took place in June also played a part in bringing down the traffic footfall and sales revenue of the store.

Despite the sluggish territory-wide retail sentiment, Sogo Tsim Sha Tsui achieved a 9.5-per-cent increase in sales during the period, having established itself as a popular shopping destination for tourists. Cosmetics and skincare products were the leading growth driver for the store, recording 14.3-per-cent growth.

The Sogo Rewards program continued to gain traction, with membership increasing to 657,000 as at June 30.

“The program has helped keep customers engaged and reinforced the group’s brand equity,” said Lau. Sales to members accounted for 55 percent of the total revenue at the Causeway Bay store during the period, up from 52 percent for all of last year.

Lau said the launch of the massive HD LED screen on the street-facing facade of the Causeway Bay Sogo department store has proven to be an effective advertising platform, reinforcing the flagship’s position as a prominent retail landmark in Hong Kong.

The group’s gross profit margin as a percentage of turnover remained stable at around 74 percent, and gross profit of HK$1.557 billion, was down 1.3 percent year on year. The net profit attributable to shareholders was $1.286 billion, up 44.8 percent, due to a positive investment income of $427 million being recorded during the period, compared with an investment loss of $56.2 million recorded for the same period last year.

Lifestyle International expects a challenging second half of the year as geopolitical tussles and waning global growth momentum further undermines business confidence and dampens consumer spending across the globe.

“Whilst prolonged China-US trade tensions and heightened economic uncertainties would pose challenges towards the Hong Kong economy, the city’s ongoing political and social unrest will cause further damage to the local economy, souring consumers’ appetites and suppressing investor sentiments in both the property and stock markets,” said Lau.

“Moreover, the anticipated weakening of the Chinese currency would also weigh upon inbound tourism and the spending of Chinese tourists.”

  • Yamaha Tracer Mini Adventure Tourer Spotted In Vietnam

Yamaha Tracer Mini Adventure Tourer Spotted In Vietnam

Yamaha may be looking at introducing a small displacement adventure tourer in the Yamaha Tracer range, as a latest spy shot from Vietnam seems to suggest. There are not enough details about what the powerplant of this mini adventure touring motorcycle is, but speculations point to a Yamaha Tracer with either a 125 cc, or a 150 cc engine. From the looks of the spy shot, it appears that the mini Tracer is near production ready, and Yamaha Vietnam may soon unveil the model, in all likelihood, at the upcoming Ho Chi Minh Motorshow later this month.

What is also not clear at this stage is whether Yamaha will be introducing a 125 cc Tracer, or a bigger 150 cc Tracer based on the Yamaha MT-15. So far, Yamaha has two models in the Tracer range, based on the MT-09 and the MT-07, called the Tracer 900 and the Tracer 700 respectively. But none of the models in the Yamaha Tracer family are offered on sale in India. If Yamaha does decide to introduce a 150 cc Tracer, and if it is eventually manufactured completely in India, we could look at a possible launch sometime in 2020, but that would also depend on if at all India Yamaha will be looking at demand for such a model in the world’s largest two-wheeler market.

A production-ready model of the mini Yamaha Tracer, in both 125 cc and 150 cc variants, could well be unveiled in November this year at the EICMA show in Milan. We are of course, excited at the prospect of a compact adventure tourer in the lower end of the displacement spectrum, and if Yamaha does decide to introduce such a model in India, it will certainly make for a very attractive package. The current naked 150 cc Yamaha MT-15 has been well-received in India, and a touring variant could well make for a good product strategy in India.

  • AirAsia to spend millions for new jets

AirAsia to spend millions for new jets

The AirAsia Group is shelling out $350 million to acquire seven more planes for its Philippine unit, according to its chief.

Talking to reporters in Bangkok late last week, AirAsia Group Chief Executive Officer Tony Fernandes said the move was the Malaysia-based low-cost carrier’s way of strengthening its presence in the country, as this would allow AirAsia Philippines to open new routes and bolster passenger capacity.

AirAsia Philippines’ domestic market share currently stands at 18 percent, nearly double from 2014’s 9.7 percent.

The local unit ended the second quarter with 23 aircraft, operating them from hubs in Manila, Cebu, Kalibo in Aklan province, and Clark in Pampanga province.

While there is no clear timeline yet on when the group expects to reach the number of airplanes to 30, Fernandes said they have started working on it.

Each plane would cost $50 million, according to him.

He said they would “come close” to having 50 aircraft in the next three or four years, “which is something I never thought would be possible.”

Fernandes is optimistic about growth opportunities for AirAsia in the country, banking on the booming tourism industry here.

“I feel we are going to keep growing. We see so much tourism potential in the Philippines, [and not just domestically]. [W]e think many Filipinos want to travel and see the rest of the world,” he said.

AirAsia Philippines flies to and from Manila, Cebu, Kalibo and Clark, as well as the cities of Tacloban in Leyte province, Tagbilaran in Bohol province and Puerto Princesa in Palawan province. It also has 13 international destinations from Manila, namely Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia; Bangkok, Thailand; Bali, Indonesia; Seoul, South Korea; Taipei and Kaohsiung in Taiwan; Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen in China; Hong Kong; Macau; and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Jollibee expands into Alberta eyeing 100 new restaurants

Jollibee Canada is continuing its expansion, opening its first store in Alberta this Friday, (August 16) at Edmonton.

The store will be the Philippine-founded fast-food group’s fifth store in Canada, as it sets out to build a network of 100 outlets there within five years.

The chain recently opened other locations in Winnipeg and the Greater Toronto Area where it says local consumers lined up for hours.

“Since opening locations in Scarborough and Mississauga over the past year, Jollibee Canada has been looking forward to serving Edmonton and making it easier for them to satisfy all of their Jollibee cravings,” said Maribeth Dela Cruz, president of Jollibee Foods Corporation North America.

“Although Jollibee is wildly popular among Filipino-Canadians, the brand also attracts a diverse mix of adventurous foodies, curious locals and families alike.”

Jollibee is the flagship brand of Jollibee Foods Corporation’s 14 brands, which now has more than 4500 stores in 21 countries.

  • Papua New Guinea Launches UBS Loan Investigation

Papua New Guinea Launches UBS Loan Investigation

Newly elected Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape announced the launch of a full investigation to confirm if the government had violated its own rules regarding a 1.2 billion Australian dollar UBS loan.

The Swiss bank extended the loan (now valued at $847 million) in 2014 to purchase a key stake in energy firm Oil Search while the current prime minister Marape was then its finance minister.

According to Marape, the investigation was not only about «looking at leaders» but to reveal the fuller scope of the entire transaction which he believes extends beyond Papa New Guinea.

The scope is not only confined to investigations in this country, he said.

UBS transactions have taken place in one or two other jurisdictions outside of our country and so the train of events will be followed by this inquiry… once concluded will put finality to the matters.

Former Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, stepped down due to loss of confidence in his leadership in May this year. Sarape was elected and sworn in one day after, having since made bold statements including his goal to turn Papa New Guinea into the world’s richest black Christian nation.

Under the new leadership, the government then sold its Oil Search stake and repaid the loan.

Prior to Sarape’s investigation, the loan had already been flagged by the country’s Ombudsman Commission for breached budget guidelines and Swiss regulator FINMA had also claimed to have contacted UBS in March about the matter.

The country deserves the fullest scrutiny as to what has happened, Sarape said.

  • HSBC Greater China CEO Exits

    HSBC Greater China CEO Exits

Shifts in senior personnel continue with the latest resignation of HSBC’s head of Greater China who leaves after 27 years with the British lender.

Helen Wong exits the bank to pursue external opportunities, according to an HSBC spokesperson who added that her July decision to leave the bank had no links with the recent exit of global CEO John Flint.

Wong began her 27-year HSBC career in 1992 and took over the newly created role of Greater China chief in 2015. Following Wong’s exit, the role will no longer exist and the three individual segments, Hong Kong, China and Taiwan, would be run by their own market heads.

Our growth strategy in China is unchanged. HSBC has been steadfast in its commitment to China for over 150 years, the spokesperson said. We will continue to support China’s growth and economic prosperity going forward.

Wong’s exit occurs amid numerous shuffles at the HSBC’s senior levels and a drive to cut more than 4,000 jobs globally. But jobs are not the only headline issue, especially in the region where existing headwinds already include an ongoing trade war and unrest in Hong Kong.

Tensions between the bank and China have risen recently due to allegations that HSBC provided information that helped US prosecutors build a case against Huawei and its CFO, Meng Wanzhou. The bank has been lobbying to convince China that it was not responsible for Meng’s arrest and insisted that the U.S. Department of Justice had applied great pressure to share information.

  • Cebu Pacific expands flights from Clark

Cebu Pacific expands flights from Clark

Cebu Pacific, the country’s biggest budget airline, widened its presence at the Clark International Airport in Pampanga province with the opening on Friday of three new routes, including flights to Tokyo, Japan.

The move opens up tourism and business opportunities for the central Luzon gateway while helping Cebu Pacific ramp up operations as it pursues an aggressive expansion strategy.

Cebu Pacific on Friday also inaugurated daily flights between Clark Airport and Bacolod and Iloilo.

Lance Gokongwei, Cebu Pacific CEO, outlined the company’s long history in Clark Airport, which it first tapped as a hub for daily flights to Cebu 13 years ago.

“Since 2006 we have never stopped flying to Clark. We have always believed in the potential of Clark as a gateway to Manila, to central and northern Luzon, a hub with over 25 million residents,” Gokongwei said during the launch event.

Cebu Pacific will also be the first airline to link Clark Airport to Narita International Airport in Japan with flights to operate four times a week.

The new routes will help make Cebu Pacific the largest carrier in Clark Airpo

Clark Airport is also being positioned as an alternative to the congested Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila.

The Gokongweis are doubling down on their investment in Clark as the family’s JG Summit Holdings, a property, food, retail and airline conglomerate, is part of the consortium that will operate the Pampanga gateway.

Cebu Pacific earlier announced the start of daily flights between Clark and Puerto Princesa in Palawan by the fourth quarter of 2019.

The four new routes will boost Cebu Pacific’s total capacity in Clark by 40 percent in 2019 alone. This follows a 75-percent increase in 2018 with the launch of direct commercial air service to and from Davao and Panglao (Bohol) as well as additional frequency for the Clark-Macau route.
