NRL’s winning partnership with AirAsia takes off

In the lead up to Game II of the 2019 Holden State of Origin Series, the National Rugby League (NRL) and AirAsia have announced an exciting new brand partnership, including the opportunity for Origin fans to win return flights to Asia.

As part of the partnership, AirAsia, which was this week announced the World’s Best Low-Cost Airline at the Skytrax World Airline Awards 2019 in Paris, France, will also give away VIP tickets to each Origin match.

AirAsia X Malaysia CEO Benyamin Ismail said the Holden State Of Origin Series is a perfect opportunity to connect with rugby league fans and tell the AirAsia story in front of a highly engaged and passionate audience.

“We continue to increase our brand presence in Australia and today offer more than 50 flights into Southeast Asia per week,” he said.

“With Origin being hosted in three of our key Australian ports – Brisbane, Sydney and Perth – we see this as a great opportunity to ensure Australian rugby league fans know that they can touch down in over 140 destinations across our extensive network.

“The timing of today’s announcement couldn’t be better for those looking to grab a deal with the AirAsia BIG Sale now on at airasia.com.”

The stadium giveaway at each match will take place at halftime. Two lucky people can also score VIP tickets to each Origin match by liking @AirAsiaAustralia on Facebook and entering the competition – simply guess the destination, say why you’d like to go there in 25 words or less and be in to win.

The partnership will also be seen across multiple channels including broadcast, signage, the NRL’s Official Instagram account, co-created video content featuring key NRL legends and other onsite activations at each match.

NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg welcomed AirAsia’s campaign and their addition as part of the Holden State of Origin platform.

“We look forward to working with AirAsia into the future in extending their brand via our key channels and portfolios.”

Game II of Holden State Of Origin kicks off on 23 June 2019 at Perth Stadium with the final game of the series culminating in Sydney on 10 July 2019.

  • Rakuten Japan Testing autonomous delivery robots

Rakuten Japan Testing autonomous delivery robots

A Japanese collective including Yamato Transport and Rakuten will partner with the Japanese government in a road test of autonomous delivery robots.

A government-appointed team will monitor the testing to identify potential issues, with a special focus on safety concerns, as well as considering new operating rules for inclusion in the Road Traffic Act. The team includes representatives from Mitsubishi Estate, Japan Post, Panasonic and self-driving tech firm ZMP, as well as officials from the National Police Agency, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and local governments.

Japan’s logistics sector, under pressure from burgeoning online sales, is currently experiencing a shortage in labour that could be answered with robot delivery units equipped with cameras and GPS capabilities, giving rise to industrial opportunities for robotic systems developers.

The tests are expected to be wound up by March next year.

  • Huawei reportedly cuts shipments of its phones

Huawei reportedly cuts shipments of its phones

After being banned from accessing its U.S. supply chain, Huawei decided in May to stop taking orders for its low and mid-range handsets that aren’t powered by the company’s Kirin chipsets. Huawei has reportedly stockpiled a year’s worth of chips and components in anticipation of such a ban, it is now cutting shipments of its higher-end handsets. The report states that earlier this month, the company started cutting orders for the Huawei P30 line, which includes the P30 Pro. The latter is the manufacturer’s most premium handset at the moment. While U.S. carriers can’t stock Huawei’s phones,  earlier this year retailer B&H offered U.S. consumers the Latin American version of the P30, P30 Pro and P30 Lite adding a one-year U.S. warranty. However, since the U.S. ban, B&H has stopped selling these models.

Today’s report notes that Huawei has also started cutting orders for the upcoming Mate 30 series. Not expected out until October, the line includes the Huawei Mate 30 Pro; this model would normally be considered Huawei’s most technologically advanced phone of the year. With the ban, it isn’t clear what new features will be included in the device. Currently, expectations call for the Mate 30 Pro to sport a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a QHD+ resolution. The device could be equipped with a pair of chips from Huawei’s HiSilicon unit, namely the Kirin 985 SoC and the Balong 5000 5G modem chip.

Barring a sudden removal from the U.S. Entity List, Huawei’s new phones will most likely ship with its own HongmengOS (aka ArkOS) pre-installed. Huawei has its own app distribution platform called App Gallery, but it remains to be seen how much developer support ArkOS will get.

Internally, Huawei expects its international phone shipments to drop by 40% to 60% this year. Of the 206 million units it delivered in 2018, about half were shipped out of China; that means that the company believes it will see total shipments drop by as many as 60 million handsets this year. Just last quarter, the manufacturer shipped 59 million smartphones worldwide, up over 50% year-over-year. At that pace, Huawei was on track to deliver just under 240 million units for 2019. Now the company is looking at a figure in the neighborhood of 140 million to 160 million smartphones. While Huawei planned on becoming the top smartphone manufacturer in the world next year, that goal will have to be scrapped for now.

Once Huawei uses up the inventory of Kirin chips it does have, things are going to get tough for the company. With chip design firm ARM Holdings cutting ties with Huawei (the company is headquartered in the U.K. but uses some American technology), the company might have to turn to an open source replacement. And the software from U.S. companies that the manufacturer uses to design its chips will also have to be replaced. While Huawei apparently did have the foresight to develop its own operating system and stockpile chips and key parts, it appears that the company might not have alternate plans for everything it needs to be self-sufficient.

For those coming in late, Huawei ended up in this predicament because of U.S. lawmakers’ fears that the company’s products will spy on American corporations and consumers. Under Chinese law, the communist government can demand that Huawei gather intelligence on its behalf. Huawei has repeatedly denied that its phones and networking equipment contain any sort of backdoors; its chairman, Liang Hua, said back in February that if the Chinese government asks him to spy, he will defy them. The executive added last month that he would sign a no-spy document with any country. Ironically, that took place on the same day that the U.S. first announced Huawei’s placement on the Entity List.

While U.S. President Donald Trump admitted in May that Huawei was placed on the list for security reasons, he added that “it’s possible that Huawei even would be included in some kind of a trade deal. If we made a deal, I could imagine Huawei being possibly included in some form, some part of a trade deal. It would look very good for us.” At this point, Huawei brass is probably hoping that the U.S. uses the company as a bargaining chip to obtain better terms from China in a new trade agreement. After all, the president was able to save ZTE from its U.S. export ban and it too is considered a national security threat.

  • Kia Seltos Teased Again Ahead Of India Debut

Kia Seltos Teased Again Ahead Of India Debut

It was February 2018 when Kia Motors showcased the SP Concept, which was supposed to be the first Kia offering in India. Needless to say, it was an SUV too. Fast forward a year and a half and Kia Motors India is all set to take the wraps off the Kia Seltos, the first model from Kia for India. The company has been releasing teasers of the Kia Seltos SUV for some time now and the latest teaser reveals certain features on the SUV along with insight into the design language as well. The latest teaser video of the Kia Seltos reveals in-cabin features such as steering mounted controls for audio and cruise control. There is climate control along with analogue tachometer and speedometer. Plus the Seltos Compact SUV also gets front parking sensors along with a sunroof, not a panoramic one, but similar to the one on the Hyundai Creta.

Spy images of the Kia Seltos’ interior reveal piano black finish inserts on the dashboard, black leather seats and rear AC vents. The front and rear seats both get hand rests for added convenience, while there are a couple of cup holders and storage spaces. Kia Motors India has already confirmed a number of features on the upcoming Seltos SUV that will include a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 360-degree camera, wireless charging, head-up display (HUD), MID, cruise control and more. The model will also come with ambient lighting, electronic parking brake, hill assist and multiple driving modes.

As far as exterior design is concerned, the Kia Seltos will feature Kia’s signature ‘Tiger-Nose’ grille along with LED headlamps and stylish fog lamps which are vertical. Also, we expect the top trims of the Seltos to have a dual-tone colour scheme (The roof having a different colour). The design of the 5-spoke diamond-cut alloy wheels is also different from that of the concept model. The teaser video also shows the Seltos taking on some off-road terrain but we don’t know if the SUV will get an off-road kit such as driving modes, AWD or anything on those lines.

The Kia Seltos will get a 1.5-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel and both engines will get manual and automatic gearbox options. It may be possible that Kia also offer a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine which could have a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. As far as competition is concerned, the Kia Seltos will be going up against the likes of the Tata Harrier, Nissan Kicks, Renault Captur and its sister model, the Hyundai Creta. The top-spec models of the Kia Seltos could also rival the MG Hector and the Jeep Compass.

  • The Aston Martin Valhalla Is The Company’s New Hypercar

The Aston Martin Valhalla Is The Company’s New Hypercar

Formerly identified by its codename AM-RB 003, Aston Martin’s latest mid-engined hypercar collaboration with Red Bull Advanced Technologies and Adrian Newey has been officially named the Aston Martin Valhalla. Named after the warrior’s paradise celebrated in ancient Norse mythology, Valhalla employs a lightweight construction method and radical aerodynamics pioneered in the Valkyrie. The Valhalla will be propelled by a combination of a high-efficiency, high-output turbocharged V6 petrol engine and a battery-electric hybrid system. Of course, it’s a limited edition model and only 500 examples of this all-carbon fibre hypercar will be built.

Together with the recently announced Vanquish Vision Concept, Valhalla continues this proud, seven decade old ‘V’ car naming strategy, providing an evocative and powerful moniker fit for one of the world’s most compelling ultra-high performance cars.

Aston Martin Lagonda President and Group Chief Executive Officer, Andy Palmer said, “Aston Martin model names always attract a lot of attention. They do so because they invariably capture an emotion or tell a story. In following the Valkyrie we knew the Aston Martin Valhalla needed to make a strong statement of its own, yet also offer continuity and a clear connection. Norse mythology contains such powerful language and rich storytelling it felt only right that the AM-RB 003 should follow the Valkyrie’s theme. For those fortunate enough to own one I’m sure they will recognise and appreciate the name’s connotations of glory and happiness, for there can be few more hallowed places than the driver’s seat of an Aston Martin Valhalla.”

In unique handcrafted ‘Figure of 8’ bowls, the master ramen is inviting fans to indulge in both hot and cold styles of a new specialty named The Eden Land (Hot) and The Eden Sea (Cold), currently a stellar dish sold at Chef Hayashi’s newly opened RAMEN PURISM in Osaka.

The novelty concept is additionally ‘instagrammable’ because lucky diners also have the opportunity to buy another rarity – his new aromatic Majimori-Style Hayashi Cup Noodles with secret spices, which sold-out in Japan within a month of launching the first batch of 100,000.  300 cups were put aside for Hong Kong, and are now reserved exclusively with customer with single spending of HK$300 – for an extra HK$25, with a limit of just two.

New snacks are also launch on the evening menu, featuring Hand-made Japanese Radish Pickle with Pomelo (HK$28), Sliced Pork Belly with Miso and Scallops (HK$38) and Hand-made Crispy Sweet Potato Ball (HK$38), serving daily from 5:30 pm.

Having attracted a cult following since opening in Hong Kong in January, RAMEN CUBISM is meanwhile fast-tracking expansion – opening a second branch brand RAMEN PURISM in Chef Hayashi’s home town of Osaka, to be followed by a sister Hong Kong branch in Tsim Sha Tsui in September.

“From the start, we envisioned Wellington Street as the flagship for an international brand, and the plan has already moved into top gear due to overwhelming popularity, with Macau and mainland China now on the radar,” said collaborating partner Eric Ting, CEO of Hong Kong’s Bird Kingdom Group, renowned for putting Lai Chi Kok’s D2 Place on the dining map.

To launch the opening campaign for RAMEN CUBISM’s expansion to Tsim Sha Tsui, ‘teaser’ tasting of the brand’s specialties is being promoted at Bird Kingdom’s D2 Place Japanese restaurant UMAI for a month from today to 18 July.  Featured ramen include the signature Premium Cubism (HK$118) and Sea Soy Soup (HK$88).

Merging vivid images of historic ramen masters and the two celebrity chefs with Japanese anime characters, the vibrant mural is inspired by parallels between the influential creativity of cubism art and minimalist simplicity of Japanese culture.

The cosy interior of RAMEN CUBISM features a predominant wood finish, invoking the sense of natural, fresh, and authentic ingredients sourced from environmentally-friendly places.  The authentic ambience is amplified by Japanese pottery specially commissioned for the chefs’ signature noodles marrying traditional cooking technology and innovative ideas – bringing a one of a kind ramen ‘comfort food’ experience to Hong Kong.

Eminently ‘instagrammable’ ramen creating the biggest buzz on social media are headlined by Premium Cubism – White Broth (HK$118 / Large), an extra-hearty larger option of a regular HK$88 version, especially renowned for Chef Hayashi’s signature slow-cooked pork belly and a half soft-boiled egg in a ‘secret recipe’ broth.

RAMEN CUBISM is in the basement of Yuen Yick Building, No. 27-29 Wellington Street, Central, Hong Kong.

Opens from Sunday to Thursday, 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and Friday to Saturday, 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 midnight; payment are accepted by cash, Octopus, Alipay and WeChat Pay.

  • Google adds new Maps features that offer some users rewards and perks

Google adds new Maps features that offer some users rewards and perks

Google has just announced a new set of features for business owners that will allow them to give Maps users an incentive to follow and, eventually, buy from them. Five years after launching Google My Business, which supposedly helped more than 150 million local business connect with people who are looking for them online, Google has decided to evolve it by adding new features and brand new design for mobile.

The most important changes are aimed at Maps users who will now be able to find a business much easier. For example, business owners can now claim a short name and URL for their business, and in the coming months, people will be able to search short names directly in Maps.

Moreover, starting today, businesses will be allowed to reward customers who follow their business on Google Maps with welcome offers, including discounts and other rewards. To make their businesses more appealing to potential customers, Google introduced the option to set the preferred profile cover photo.

Also, businesses will be able to add photo captions to their profiles, which will tell the stories behind the pictures. A new logo feature has been revealed as well, which will allow businesses that completed their core info to have their logo displayed at the top right-hand side of their profile.

Maps is one of the first apps that gets these new features for businesses, but Google might bring some of them to other apps or devices like Assistant and smart speakers, which would be in line with the company’s voice strategy.

  • Kia Seltos India Launch Details Out

Kia Seltos India Launch Details Out

Kia Motors India has unveiled the Seltos compact SUV and yes, we all are waiting for the company to launch the car. The Kia Seltos will be launched in India in August 2019. We still do not have a confirmation on the date but it will be in the second half of that month. The company has invested more than $2 billion in India and the Seltos is the first of many product offerings to come to the country. The Seltos will be exported to other markets too from India including Latin America, the Middle East and other parts of Asia, which shows how important a product it is for Kia Motors globally. It is also equipped with a host of segment-first features which should give it an edge in its segment.

The Kia Seltos enters a very crowded segment which has seen more players enter than ever before. Of course it has to deal with contenders like the Hyundai Creta, which has been the segment leader, but there are newer challengers to deal with too, the Tata Harrier and even the first connected compact SUV – the MG Hector.

But while the Seltos too is a connected car, there are a host of segment first features that it brings to the table. To begin with, it’s the first carmaker to make a car available in a dual trim option. It also gets a first in segment 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation. Adding to the premiumness, is an 8-speaker sound system by Bose. Kia has also provided an air purifier which has been placed between the front two seats and provides for an AC vent for rear seat passengers. There’s a 360 degree surround camera added to the segment first list as well which provides for better visibility.

So, the Seltos becomes the second connected compact SUV after the MG Hector. Kia calls it UVO and you can, just like we’ve seen in the Venue, use your phone to operate the car’s ignition, AC controls and more. There’s also Apple Carplay and Android Auto on offer. That’s not the end of the segment first features yet, the Seltos SUV also gets an 8 inch heads up display which gives you all the information you need without being distracted. There’s also a sound mood lamp, rear sunshade curtain and a 7-inch colour TFT unit for the instrument console, which add to the premiumness of the Seltos.

With all these features expect the Seltos to be priced competitively and that’s because of the local content that it gets. The Seltos is expected to be priced between ₹ 11 lakh – ₹ 17 lakh when it’s launched, but we’ll know more about the car when we drive it and also at the launch.

  • Fossil to launch new Emporio Armani, Diesel and Michael Kors smartwatches

Fossil to launch new Emporio Armani, Diesel and Michael Kors smartwatches

Each year Fossil refreshes its stylish lineup of smartwatches with new models that feature updated hardware and, sometimes, different designs. This is year is no exception and a new set of Fossil wearable devices are expected to arrive as early as fall.

A fairly sizable number of unannounced Fossil smartwatches have been recently spotted at FCC, and their codenames have been deciphered by Droid-life as belonging to brands like Michael Kors, Emporio Armani, and Diesel. There’s also one Fossil-branded smartwatch among those listed at FCC, but there might be additional ones that haven’t popped up yet at the Federal Communications Commission.

Along with the listing of their codenames, we also have some pictures showing the Wear OS app drawer and settings, but aside from that, no exciting new info revealed in the documentation filed at FCC.

We’re not even sure whether or not these will be equipped with Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Wear 3100 chipset, which would be an upgrade from the current Fossil smartwatch. The good news is we’ll most likely learn more about Fossil’s upcoming smartwatches pretty soon now that they’ve been listed at FCC.

  • Upcoming NVIDIA Shield TV to feature Google Stadia support

Upcoming NVIDIA Shield TV to feature Google Stadia support

News about NVIDIA working on a new Shield TV set-top box emerged over the weekend, but not many details on the device were mentioned at that time. We only learned that the Android TV box will include a more powerful processor and that it will run Android 9.0 Pie. NVIDIA’s plans that the upcoming Shield TV will be centered on Google’s Stadia service, which allows users to stream games on just about any device with a display.

On top of that, NVIDIA wants to release a new controller with the upcoming console and a more advanced remote. Also, the cheapest version of the console will come without the controller to allow those who ordered the Stadia controller to save some money when they buy the new NVIDIA Shield TV.

Embracing Google Stadia’s game streaming service is a bold move from NVIDIA, as the company will most likely see a decrease in market share for its own GeForce NOW cloud gaming service that aims to do the same thing for subscribers.

Finally, while we don’t have a price for the upcoming NVIDIA Shield TV, it appears that the new console is expected to be launched on the market by the end of this year, so there’s still time for NVIDIA to change its strategy for whatever reason.
