DHL announce ecommerce service expansion in Turkey

German based logistics firm DHL Express has said it will be investing more on ecommerce operations and infrastructure in Turkey in a bid to expedite parcels passing to and from Europe and several other parts of the world. A key part of the innovations and improvements will be a new operations hub at Istanbul airport but more developments are planned.

The announcements were made at the DHL International Cross Border eCommerce Summit, which took place in Istanbul during December. And it was noted that the importance of Turkey is its strategic position as the meeting point between Europe, Africa and Asia. As a crucial trading hub, they reckon that DHL will be able to move consignments to numerous destinations in the Middle East and Africa more quickly by operating through Turkey.

This makes Turkey a very important country for us, and we are working to make it a regional hub,” Leendert van Delft, VP Global Sales Programs DHL Express said. The operation center at the airport in Istanbul will be the first step in that direction the vice president announced. “Today, when you look at the world, everyone speaks of the US and China as ecommerce markets. But in the case of Turkey, you’re not at the initial phase of this journey, but you have actually moved from the infancy to the stage of walking. It is time for Turkey to run now.

DHL says that their current share of global ecommerce deliveries is estimated to be in the region of 29% but they they hope to achieve something closer to between 40-50% by the end 2020. They also note that the DHL portion of same stood at 5% in 2016 and increased to 10% at the start of 2017 before rising to 15% in November 2017. And as competition and ecommerce increases, an ongoing share of business of roughly 25-30% is their reported aim.

  • DHL Delivers Black Friday, Cyber Monday and 2018 Holiday Season

DHL Delivers Black Friday, Cyber Monday and 2018 Holiday Season

DHL, the world’s leading logistics company, is ready to deliver Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the 2018 holiday season as e-commerce continues to boom. As the only logistics company with services and capabilities to link the entire e-commerce supply chain, the DHL divisions operating in the United States can expect to handle up to 40% more volume in the peak season versus the rest of the year.

U.S. retailers are preparing for another record holiday shopping spree, growing more than 4% with total sales predicted to top USD 1.002 trillion this Christmas season1, boosted by promotions such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Online sales are expected to accelerate at an even faster clip, growing nearly 17% from last year.

To boost productivity and meet the surge in volume, DHL is adding more automation and bringing innovative technologies including using collaborative robots in fulfillment centers that help staffers gather the products needed to fill online orders more efficiently, introducing chatbots to answer customer questions more rapidly and adding more automation to its distribution centers to quickly sort and get parcels ready for delivery.

In New York, DHL couriers will be collecting packages from automated delivery depots and beating the traffic to get them to customers’ doorsteps.

Says Greg Hewitt, CEO for DHL Express U.S.: “We define peak as the period right after Thanksgiving through to Christmas. We really see volumes go up around the globe at this time. In the U.S., our busiest day of the year for outbound shipments is November 26 – Cyber Monday. Our busiest inbound day will be December 17 – the last Monday before Christmas.

To ensure shipments arrive on time, Hewitt says, “First think about your product and how to protect it. Ensure you have the right packaging to move through our network. Next, ensure that your staff is accurately portraying content on the shipment’s commercial paperwork and declaring the proper value – if you don’t know how to do this, ask someone in our team. Most importantly, plan early and ship early, in order to beat potential delays due to weather or customs hold-ups. The assurance we can provide is, if it gets to our stations by December 24th, we’ll deliver it. We don’t close our doors until every package is out and on its way to the final destination.”

DHL eCommerce’s new automated distribution center in northern New Jersey, one of the company’s 19 distribution centers along with three fulfillment centers in the U.S., provides the last mile delivery solution for online retailers. For these merchants, logistics is the back-end support that provides a significant part of the consumer experience. The new center will be launched at the end of the month.

Says Lee Spratt, CEO for DHL eCommerce Americas: “This season will probably be stronger than 2017. The market is growing at 10-15%. I expect a minimum of 10% growth on peak volumes vs. last year, but wouldn’t be surprised to see it hit 20%. The peaks are Black Friday and Cyber Monday – around these days we see a dramatic increase in orders. The volumes usually show up on the Saturday and Tuesday directly after these days. This is when we need the highest amount of labor in our facilities and our operations at full power. Consumer expectations are high – they want to receive their orders just as on any other shopping day – and this is a defining moment for many retailers in winning and retaining business, so it’s critical that delivery providers meet their commitments.”

At Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, DHL Express workers will be loading American goods onto pallets and freighters for export to consumers in Asia and Europe.

Says Mike Parra, DHL Express Americas CEO: “Many of our customers are shipping to the UK, Australia and China. These are key trade lanes, but the rest of the world is still important. A large portion of our growth is now coming from e-commerce and our fast-growing retail channel. In line with the growth we’re seeing over the first and final mile, we’ve made recent investments, for example, in expanded facilities in Tucson, Arizona, Ontario, California, and Baltimore, Maryland. We’ve also invested in air capacity – our customers want speed to market for their own customers, so we have invested in new flights to Vancouver, Lima and Bogota.

“To improve the customer experience, we are also looking at more automation in our facilities, robotic process automation for customs clearance and billing, and chatbots and voice assistants. These enhance the end-to-end customer service experience. You can now opt to speak to someone live or to go through one of our tools that is integrated with Alexa, WhatsApp and other applications to find your package or get other information from DHL Express.”

At the Port of Miami, DHL staff will be supervising the offload of containers filled with consumer goods from trading partners around the world.

Says David Goldberg, CEO for DHL Global Forwarding U.S.: “The peak season usually starts a bit earlier for the forwarding industry, as customers reposition inventory to their fulfillment centers in the U.S. ahead of time in consolidated freight consignments. Last year, we saw an extremely strong peak in the fourth quarter, with a capacity crunch in air freight and ocean freight, and rates going up by more than 100% versus previous months. Now, with the tariffs, inventory is getting pushed forward, so the peak has started even earlier and become more elongated. We are seeing tight capacity in transpacific ocean freight, in particular, which is one of the main trade lanes during the holiday season. And air freight capacity has tightened in recent weeks. Both capacity and rates are tight overall.”

And in Columbus, Ohio, DHL warehouse associates will be working with several innovative technologies that help them make sure that the right products are in every order and get them on the road well in time for Santa’s visit. Vision Picking is among the technologies that DHL is using. These “smart glasses” are an augmented reality tool that provides staff in warehouses with the location of products needed to fill orders; helps reduce pick time and increase order picking accuracy thus providing productivity increases of up to 10%. It also helps reduce employee training time.

DHL is also working with collaborative robots which can see, move, and work alongside people. Made by Locus Robotics, LocusBots are used in e-commerce fulfillment operations, helping staffers locate products for orders and ferrying them from warehouse aisles to the shipment prep area. With the bots, order pickers don’t have to push carts or carry heavy bins. LocusBots are used in several DHL warehouses.

Says Scott Sureddin, CEO for DHL Supply Chain North America: “The expectation of next-day or 2-day delivery is compressing order cycle times and challenging everyone in the supply chain to become more efficient and adaptable to change. The first thing our e-commerce customers want is quality and operational excellence with a continuous improvement culture. They also want experts who are leaders with emerging technologies, who can help them to find ways of improving efficiencies and productivity. And they want agile solutions, which will allow them to respond to changes in their market and business needs.”

  • DHL plugs in to Shopify Singapore to enable simpler worldwide shipping

DHL plugs in to Shopify Singapore to enable simpler worldwide shipping

DHL eCommerce, a division of the world’s leading logistics company, Deutsche Post DHL Group, is working with Shopify, a leading e-commerce platform, to enable Singapore-based merchants to easily ship to their customers worldwide through a seamless plugin on a single platform. All new Singapore-based businesses built with Shopify will also enjoy special promotions for cross border shipping with DHL. Currently over 60% of Singapore-based merchants sell and ship their products internationally through the Shopify platform, and with the cross-border e-commerce opportunity continuing to grow, the DHL eCommerce plugin will make it even easier for merchants to ship their goods internationally.

“Cross border e-commerce continues to grow exponentially and this is apparent from the borderless buying behavior of online shoppers. 70% of online buyers made a purchase from a foreign site in 2017, up 6% from the year before and this trend is expected to continue.  To deliver to buyers across borders, sellers need simple and seamless shipping solutions to manage their orders and deliver to their customers worldwide. By building tools for global shippers on Shopify, we’re making it easy to satisfy this exact requirement,” said Senthil Kumar, Managing Director, DHL eCommerce Singapore.

Integrating different online systems can be complex, especially for sellers who sell online across multiple sales channels. By hosting their e-commerce stores on platforms such as Shopify, sellers have access to a wide array of plugins to connect the dots from click to delivery.

Improved visibility in delivery helps to greatly enhance the entire customer experience. With DHL eCommerce shipping plugin available on Shopify, shippers can easily ship internationally by processing shipments on a single platform, from printing labels to generating tracking reference codes to enable shipment visibility for their customers — virtually automating the shipping process.

“Shopify understands the dynamics of e-commerce, where requirements of sellers and buyers are evolving faster than ever. To ensure our merchants are keeping pace, we are working with DHL, a key driver of the global e-commerce ecosystem. The DHL eCommerce plugin, combined with the special rates for new Shopify merchants, will help retailers and brands on our platform ship with ease so they can devote more time to selling,” said Arun Verma, Country Manager, Shopify Singapore.

DHL eCommerce is part of Deutsche Post DHL Group and, along with its sister divisions DHL Express, DHL Supply Chain and DHL Global Forwarding, DHL has been operating in Singapore since 1970, offering end-to-end solutions for the e-commerce sector.

  • DHL Express Malta to expand capabilities on next-day deliveries

DHL Express Malta to expand capabilities on next-day deliveries

DHL Express, the world’s leading international express services provider, has taken a strategic decision to focus the activities of its Malta operation solely on Time Definite International (express) deliveries, reinforcing its commitment to ensure its parcels and documents are delivered on time.

“Our express business is growing, and we want to focus on the cross-border e-commerce opportunities,” Charles Schiavone, Country Manager of DHL Express, said. “We will dedicate our resources on Express Services and achieve growth through quality.”

As the company gears up for the forthcoming seasonal peak, Schiavone is keen to ensure the amount of successfully delivered shipments grows even higher. This service promise is backed by a further strengthening of the On Demand Delivery infrastructure through strategically placed automated DHL Parcel Lockers that are highly popular with its clients and can be accessed 24/7.

DHL Express Malta has plans for five new Parcel Lockers in localities around Malta, including Mellieha, Zabbar, Zebbug and Zejtun, taking the total to 13. Additionally, another three add-on units will increase capacity to existing lockers. This will ensure that customers have a broader range to choose their preferred hi-tech unit.

“We have seen our shipments growing by 20 per cent in the first six months of this year and we expect a similar increase in inward e-commerce business towards the end of the year,” Schiavone said.

DHL Express Malta also plans to double the size of its facility in Luqa by the end of next year.

  • DHL looks to pilot driverless trucks

DHL looks to pilot driverless trucks

A driverless car on Indian roads may still be a distant dream, but companies are actively looking at ways to use other autonomous vehicles like tractors, buses, trucks, and even choppers. German logistics giant DHL, for instance, feels driverless trucks can halve logistics costs and improve customer service.

“In the last mile, on the line haul itself, the driverless technologies that are being piloted in Germany, we believe, have the potential to reduce line haul costs by 50 per cent,” Malcolm Monteiro, CEO, DHL eCommerce India told.

About 65 per cent of logistics movements in India happen by road and about 85 per cent of these are in the unorganised sector; typically, a driver takes a truck for a long distance, and has to make stops for rest and food, which reduces the efficiency of truck use.

“There’s a tremendous shortage of skilled drivers. We’re looking to see whether these vehicles can ply driverless in line haul on the last mile. If that happens, it brings in a lot of reliability into the system, besides reducing cost. Then we’ll probably not have to work on a hub-and-spoke model; we can even work point to point. So the entire business models could be looked at afresh with these technologies,” Monteiro said.

    Govt ‘favourable’ to idea

Monteiro said the initial discussions with the Indian government over driverless technologies have been positive. “The government is favourable in terms of looking into it because it does realise there is a tremendous shortage of skilled drivers. So it will look at any technology to make sure the demand side is addressed. But we don’t have a concrete timeline. The intent is there, there’s ongoing discussion,” he added.

    Safety aspects

But Moteiro said the company will test the safety aspects of driverless technologies in Germany before beginning pilots in India to ensure there is no scepticism about the technology here.

“If we get this to work, it might look at it, pilot it. The intent is there, there’s ongoing discussion,” said Monteiro.

DHL, however, is taking it one step at a time. “For a vehicle to be autonomous, driven fully, one of the first things that needs to happen is the electrification; we have a concrete target for electrification. And for autonomy to happen, we need everything electric. So, we are really focussing more of our efforts to electrify all our vehicles as a first step,” said Pang Mei Yee, Vice-President, Head of Innovation, Asia Pacific, Customer Solutions & Innovation, DHL.

Yee feels these technologies can make the existing trucks a lot safer and more efficient even as the company prepares itself for a fully autonomous future.

“Our smart trucks are a fantastic example where we are introducing a lot of optimisation efforts, notification to drivers for their behaviours. There are sensors that allow drivers to get reminded when they are eating while driving or when they are dozing off. So, progressively you’ll see intelligence built into the truck. Full autonomous vehicles are still some time off,” Yee said.

“Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises continue to play a major role in Vietnam, accounting for 98 percent of all enterprises, 40 percent of GDP and 50 percent of employment.[1] However, they face unique challenges such as access to finance and international partners. DHL is passionate about supporting small businesses and we are excited to work with Sendo to support their sellers with an excellent, high quality domestic delivery network.” said Thomas Harris, Managing Director, DHL eCommerce Vietnam.

  • DHL MENA launches new e-com campaign for merchants

DHL MENA launches new e-com campaign for merchants

DHL Express, the world’s leading international express service provider, is set to launch its global campaign ‘Where Everything Clicks’ in Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, to guide online merchants to navigate and access the booming and lucrative global e-commerce marketplace. DHL Express aims for the campaign to reach companies ranging from start-ups to large enterprises, advising merchants on how to optimize their websites for international sales and to create a competitive advantage via shipping options offered. DHL helps sellers traverse an increasingly global landscape, in which buyers progressively make purchases from international websites.

The campaign reveals purchasing habits of online shoppers, including always important delivery preferences, and shows merchants how to use this information to increase sales.

‘Where Everything Clicks’ includes a rich database of how-to videos, white papers, customer insights, and trend videos that inform merchants and business about evolving consumer behaviour.

A 2017 study by KPMG reports that consumers across Middle East and Africa were the most likely to import consumer products bought online, almost 50 percent of purchases, showcasing  the rise in cross-border shopping that is driving international retail trade.

The survey also revealed ‘Enhanced Delivery Options’ as one of the key company attributes that contribute to deciding where shoppers choose to buy online.

The study findings illustrate that companies must continually innovate to improve and shorten delivery times, to satisfy increasingly demanding consumer expectations.

“The MENA region is witnessing rapid growth and change in e-commerce trends. Cross border e-commerce presents strong growth opportunities that is yet to be tapped into by many businesses in the region,” said Nour Suliman, CEO MENA, DHL Express. “With the proliferation of online trade, a product in one corner of the world today is now easily accessible to customers at the opposite end in just a few clicks. This has allowed online merchants to access markets and customers from around the globe.”

Faysal Elhajjami, DHL Express MD, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia said: “We recognise that our customers’ success is closely tied to their buyers’ satisfaction with the delivery experience and the delivery options offered. With ‘Where Everything Clicks’ campaign we want to showcase to business across KSA  how an international express shipping option can increase e-commerce value helping merchants boost revenue and tap into new markets.”

Geoff Walsh, UAE Country Manager, DHL Express said DHL would be particularly focusing on SMEs and start-ups. “We aim to support local ecommerce start-ups by providing them with tailor made solutions that will allow them to easily address potential global consumers, therefore improving their e-commerce proposition within the current market,” he said. “The ‘Where Everything Clicks’ campaign highlights how an international express shipping option can increase e-commerce value helping merchants boost revenue and tap into new markets.”

DHL has developed services that enhance customer experience and support web merchants as they access new markets. Using advanced market intelligence tools, DHL can quickly identify shopping sites that receive traffic from international locations, identifying potential sales outside of the seller’s core market. DHL can compare website engagement metrics and suggest service enhancement via addition of a cross-border express delivery option.

With DHL’s On Demand Delivery, buyers are notified proactively via email or SMS about a shipment’s progress. Receivers can schedule delivery for another day, arrange delivery to a nearby DHL Service Point or an alternate address, and even request that a shipment is held during vacation. DHL Express offers On Demand Delivery in over 100 countries, with about 50 more coming this year.

First conducted in Asia in 2001, Aon Hewitt’s Best Employers study aims to recognize companies that have a real competitive advantage by investing in its people, and to explore the winning attributes of a workplace of choice.

And its hard work and focus seem to have paid off as Vechain finds itself on the partner wall of DHL’s Asia-Pacific Innovation Centre (APIC) in Singapore.

VechainThor’s DApp and DHL partnership could bring blockchain to logistics

The news of the partnership with DHL shared by Sarah Nabba, Country Manager for Singapore at VeChain Tech where she said the DHL center provides an immersive experience to clients by introducing new solutions from both established co. & startups and the Vechain would look for collaborations with DHL.

This could prove to a really good news for the project as DHL is one of the biggest names in logistics globally. It would also provide Vechain to grow under DHL’s guidance at the Innovation Centre and may get a chance to collaborate on a variety of projects in the logistics space.

This SGD$10m facility is DHL’s first innovation center outside of Germany and the first dedicated center for innovative logistics services in the Asia-Pacific region. Launched with the support of the Economic Development Board (EDB) of Singapore, the APIC showcases futuristic technologies that will transform logistics operations.

VeChain is continuously working on its business model of Blockchain-as-a-Service (BaaS) provider that targets enterprise-level businesses. Vechain had recently had announced that it has co-developed a blockchain-based supplier evaluation system with global logistics provider DB Schenker. This new decentralized application (DApp) will use the VeChainThor blockchain to score DB Schenker’s third-party logistics partners in China based on collected data –  the result being an evaluation for services such as packaging, transportation, and the quality of goods.

The Vechain Foundation claims that the DApp is the first ever implementation of blockchain for supplier management purposes

“In the future, the system and its related applications can potentially evolve into a platform [that is] widely shared and co-constructed by a broad range of logistics service providers.”

Logistics sector has significant roadblocks which blockchain can provide a solution to. Blockchain has potential to rehaul the logistics and supply chain industry by providing the tamper-proof tracking of products is being recognized by an increasing number of global industry giants, among them Maersk, IBM, and FedEx, as well as South Korean electronics leader Samsung and Walmart. Understanding this space well, Vechain is making its move correctly towards mending this problem.

Blockchain does have a potential to fundamentally change the logistics industry and Vechain would look forward to cooperating with more industry players building a logistics ecosystem based on mutual construction, trust, collaboration, and benefit.
