Embassy promotes trade expo Indonesia in Senegal

The Indonesian Embassy in Dakar, Senegal, has held a business meeting with Senegalese businessmen to promote various mainstay products and the 31st Trade Expo Indonesia (TEI) to be held in Jakarta on October 12-16, 2016.

The business meeting was attended by Senegalese businesspersons who have been doing business with their Indonesian counterparts.

Secretary general of the Senegalese national chamber of commerce and industry Ndeye Seye, Dakar chamber of commerce and industry secretary general Aly Mboub, Poultrade CEO Washimp Obalah and Libellule CEO Gaelle Rispal attended the meeting.

It was also attended by Senegalese businessmen in Thies who have visited the TEI organized in previous years.

Indonesian Ambassador to Senegal Mansyur Pangeran said here on Sunday that the relations between Indonesia and Senegal, particularly in the business field, have been running well since long ago.

However, their bilateral trade was still low, recorded at US$89.37 million only in 2015.

The Indonesian embassy promoted various mainstay products during the meeting such as oil palm, cocoa, rubber, cinnamon and textile.

During the meeting, Senegalese businessmen asked information regarding the types of products, prices, container transportation services, payment mechanism and sharia banks in Indonesia.

Poultrade is interested in developing business with Indonesia for soap noodles. It is planning toimport 300-500 tons of the product from Indonesia per month.

The ambassador said Indonesias free-visa policy was also hailed by Senegalese businesses and it is likely that more Senegalese businesses will take part in the 31st TEI.

  • Finance ministry believes 2017 growth will be better

Finance ministry believes 2017 growth will be better

The Indonesian economy will grow at a faster pace in 2017 than it did in 2016, the Ministry of Finance believes.

“I believe the economic growth next year will be higher than that of this year,” chief of the ministrys fiscal policy body, Suahasil Nazara, said at a meeting of the working committee of the House of Representatives (DPR) Budget Body here Wednesday.

Economic growth in the past five years has tended to slow down as internal upheaval and global pressure had slightly affected the national economic performance, he noted.

The economic slowdown is expected to reach its peak this year after the government issued a series of fiscal policies, the first since 2015, aimed at boosting the national economy, he said.

“The fiscal policies are aimed at spurring economic growth. This way we encourage tax receipts and divert expenditures to more productive infrastructure projects from non-productive infrastructure projects and cut fuel subsidies. All of these will lead to higher growth,” he added.

The country began to see the result of the fiscal policies when economic growth was recorded at 4.8 percent in 2015 and 4.92 percent in the first quarter of 2016, he said.

“In view of that, the assumed economic growth for 2016 is set at 5.2 percent as compared to 4.8 percent in 2015. Since the first quarter of 2016, the economic growth has reached 4.9 percent. We believe the turning point has been visible but it takes time to increase,” he said.

    GrabBike Indonesia Records 300% Growth

Online app-based transportation service GrabBike recorded a growth of 300 percent (year to date) until the first half of 2016.

“Our growth has been outstanding since last January when Grab did a rebranding as the service provider with the most complete vehicle reservation platform,” Public Relations Manager for Grab Express and Grab Bike Dewi Nuraini said in a statement on Thursday, July 14, 2016.

Dewi says Grab’s machine learning technology and data analytic capabilities are the significant driving growth factors and allow major efficiency.

In addition, the company also gradually reduces subsidy for every trip completed by 50 percent. “This indicates the high involvement of the users on Grab’s multi-service platform,” Dewi said.

One of Grab’s four monthly active users in Indonesia averagely uses more than one Grab services. Besides the app-based motorcycle taxi or GrabBike, Grab has a private car rental, taxi order, and courier service.

Dewi said Indonesia has become the largest market for Grab, based on the number of trips completed on the entire platform. Therefore, Grab specifically focuses its business in Jakarta.

“Grab also plans to expand its multi-service platform to more than eight major cities in Indonesia,” said Dewi.

Businesses in Indonesia Capitalize on Pokemon GO Popularity

“We are excited to announce that Pokémon GO is officially available to Trainers in Germany,” Pokemon Go announced on Wednesday (13/7) on its official website.

With an official Indonesian release imminent, savvy businesses across the country have begun harvesting the game’s unique featured — requiring players to travel around and explore different areas to find and catch Pokémon.

The National Museum, Jakarta, suggested players, known as Pokémon trainers, hunt the little monsters through the institution’s grounds on Monday.

“Are you a Pokémon master/trainer? Come hunt Pokémon at the National Museum. It will add to your knowledge in a fun way!,” the Museum National tweeted.

Motorcycle taxi ride-hailing application Go-Jek also did not want to miss the opportunity to benefit from the game.

“Wanna seek Pokémon? Go with Gojek,” the ride hailing app said.

Qraved.com, a Jakarta-based restaurant search and reservation site, joined the parade after launching a list of restaurants close to Pokéstops — places where players can get free items to enhance game experience — around the Sudirman area.

The app — created by license owner Pokémon Company, multinational consumer electronics and software company Nintendo and Google’s spin-off software developer Niantic — itself, according to Quartz, has seen its players in the US alone spend $1.6 million each day on in-app purchases.

Taiwan-based Shoemaker Set to Expand Factory in Indonesia

A Taiwan-based sports shoes manufacturer has expressed its interest to expand its business in Indonesia. The company, who has had a factory in Tangerang since 1996 with 1,100 workers, will expand and is expected to absorb up to 10,000 workers.

The Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) chairman Franky Sibarani has welcomed the planned expansion. “It’s very positive to help to create employment and optimize investment benefits in a bid to improve people’s welfare,” he said in an official statement as quoted by Bisnis.com, Tuesday, July 12, 2016.

The BKPM chairman said that the company has picked Majalengka District as one of the possible location for its expansion. The company will expand its factory and also bring along some of its suppliers as part of its supply chain.

Franky sees it as a positive move amid the government’s effort to make Indonesia as a supply chain hub of products being marketed in Southeast Asia and Asia.

“We will certainly support labor intensive industries who have set their sight on Indonesia as their production base,” he explained.

BKPM data shows that investment realization from Taiwan throughout 2015 stood at US$107.95 million, consisted of 275 projects and was ranked 15th in the list of countries investing in Indonesia. Meanwhile, in February 2016 that Taiwan’s outward investment to Indonesia was ranked seventh with a total investment of US$1.5 billion.

Taiwan’s investment is expected to help achieve the target of 2016 investment realization of Rp594.8 trillion, particularly from foreign investment which is set at Rp386 trillion, or 65% of the targeted total investment realization.

  • Inamall launch opens doors for RI businesses

Inamall launch opens doors for RI businesses

The launch of a marketplace dedicated to Indonesian-made products on Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba’s platform will open doors for local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to break into the Chinese market.

Over the weekend, Trade Minister Thomas Lembong and a number of officials took part in officiating Inamall in China, which is currently accessible through Alibaba’s subsidiary marketplace Tmall Global. Prior to the announcement, Inamall had reportedly been active since last year.

Inamall will feature exclusively Indonesian-made products, with a particular emphasis on food and beverages. Some Indonesian brands that have entered this marketplace include coffee brands Kopi Luwak and Kapal Api, along with snack products ranging from Kusuka chips to Inaco Nata De Coco.

Through the partnership with Alibaba, Indonesia now has a direct access to a lucrative online market, which would allow Indonesian producers to sell their products directly to Chinese consumers without the hassle of distributors.

Indonesian ambassador to China and Mongolia Soegeng Rahardjo elaborated during the event that since Inamall’s soft launch last year it has been visited by up to 400 million Chinese users, thus highlighting the extensive interest in Indonesian products in the People’s Republic.

The interest, Soegeng noted, arose because members of the Chinese public had less faith in their local products because of safety issues, especially when it comes to food and beverage products. With this perception by Chinese people, Indonesian products will get a better foothold in their market.

“But the challenge now is how [Indonesian vendors] are able to maintain the quality of their goods, maintain their capacity and ensure the continuity of their production so that outside markets are able to consistently come back to an Indonesian product,” he said during the Inamall launch in Hangzhou last week, as reported by Antara.

Adding to that, the director of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) in China, Liky Sutikno, noted that Inamall would enable Chinese consumers to develop emotional connections with Indonesian products, enough for them to buy again and again if they adore the product, thus creating precious brand loyalty.

At the same event, the managing director of the Global Alibaba Group, K. Guru Gowrappan, noted that Alibaba’s intentions in Indonesia are to help build the country’s e-commerce ecosystem so that local SMEs will be able to thrive.

Alibaba had already begun to extend its reach into the Southeast Asian e-commerce market, with its recent purchase of a controlling stake in Singapore-based platform Lazada earlier this year.

Commenting on this partnership, the Communications and Information Ministry’s e-business director general, Azhar Hasyim, said that having their products able to transcend borders directly into a market like China would be massively beneficial for Indonesian SMEs.

In terms of online traffic, Azhar says that with many Indonesians being familiar with Chinese websites and online services, the market exposure could increase as a result on both sides.

Ministry striving to attract 400 thousand South Korean tourists

The Indonesian tourism ministry is taking innovative steps to achieve this years target of attracting 400 thousand tourists from South Korea, including by participating in the “Wedding Expo” in Seoul on July 9-10, 2016.

Assistant Deputy for Market Development of the Asia-Pacific region of the Ministry of Tourism Vinsensius Jemadu stated from Seoul, South Korea, on Monday, that the ministry continued to fill innovation gaps.

“We are looking for the slightest opportunities to promote Indonesias segment aboard. It has been almost three years that we have participated in events promoting this segment, but now, we will try again,” he noted in connection with the Tourism Ministrys participation at the wedding exhibition to offer honeymoon packages to various tourism destinations in Indonesia.

Jemadu is optimistic that its target of drawing 400 thousand tourists from South Korea would be reached.

In 2015, a total of 359,468 South Korean tourists visited tourist destinations in Indonesia.

Jemadu pointed out that Bali and Bintan were now the most sought-after locations for pre-wedding photographs among brides and also the venues for the weddings of young Korean couples.

“They really like the beach and the ambience of the tropical waters in Indonesia,” he noted.

South Korea has direct flight connectivity to Indonesia. As many as three airlines operate flights to two international airports in Indonesia, and there are some 618,748 seats available on flights to the country.

“This exhibition is held in summer in South Korea. We hope that during winter, South Koreans will leave the country and visit Indonesia that has moderate weather and is always a good option for couples on honeymoon,” he said.

“Of course, we did this exhibition to promote the country as a wedding destination for couples planning to wed in autumn. It is this momentum that we are pursuing,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Head of Asia-Pacific Exhibition of the Ministry of Tourism Rita Sofia in South Korea expressed hope that all engaged in supporting the tourism sector in Indonesia will continue to prepare various attractions, amenities, and access to support the arrival of newlywed South Koreans.

Tourism Minister Arief Yahya seconded Sofias view as he believed that Korea was a potential market that could be tapped by showcasing Indonesias cultural and natural attractions.

“The Asian market must be tapped by showcasing the oriental culture, and the countries must be frequently visited to create a joint program. For instance, the distance from Seoul to Indonesias tourism destinations, including to Manado, is not too far, so we just need to increase the number of direct flights,” he explained.

Yahyas recent visit to South Korea already resulted in a commitment made by the two South Korean airlines —Jeju Air and Jin Air Korea — to operate flights to Indonesia.

“It will boost the number of South Korean tourist arrivals in the country,” he affirmed.

Industries participating in the exhibition had also prepared a variety of honeymoon vacation packages. General Manager Globlindo Arief Authority has prepared various packages: Bali Honeymoon Escape, Lombok Honeymoon, Tanjung Lesung Honeymoon, Kepulauan Seribu Honeymoon, and Raja Ampat Honeymoon.

  • 250 thousand tourists visit Gunung Kidul during Lebaran holidays

250 thousand tourists visit Gunung Kidul during Lebaran holidays

Around 250 thousand tourists visited numerous tourist attractions in Gunung Kidul District, Yogyakarta, in a week during the 2016 Lebaran holidays, according to local Culture and Tourism Office spokesman Hary Sukmono.

“Based on reports received from several tourist attractions, the total revenue generated from 250 thousand tourists visiting the areas amounted to Rp1.57 billion,” Sukmono remarked here on Tuesday.

However, the spokesman acknowledged that the number of tourists visiting Gunung Kidul during the Lebaran holidays in 2016 had dropped slightly from 362 thousand during the same period in 2015.

Sukmono explained that until the end of December 2015, more than 2.6 million domestic and foreign tourists had visited all tourist attractions in Gunung Kidul District.

He said the number of tourists visiting Gunung Kiduls tourist attractions last year had exceeded 2.6 million, with the total local revenue reaching Rp20.9 billion.

The target of tourist arrivals in Gunung Kidul District in 2016 is set to be more than 2.6 million people, and the local culture and tourism office will continue to innovate to welcome tourists who will visit the district, he noted.

The Gunung Kidul local government in Yogyakarta is making efforts to promote and develop the districts tourist spots under the framework of its tourism investment development mission, according to regional development planning board spokesman Syarief Armunanto.

“The tourism investment development mission will focus on natural tourism, village tourism, cultural tourism, and special-interest tourism,” he remarked here some time ago.

Gunung Kidul has several natural tourist attractions, such as the Ngrancah waterfall in Ngleri Village, along with the pristine beaches of Gesing, Ngrenehan, Ngobaran, and Baron, in addition to Krakal, Sunduk, Watu Lawang, Drini, and Sepanjang.

Garuda Indonesia Raking It In During Idul Fitri Holiday

Flag carrier Garuda Indonesia filled more seats on its domestic flights during the Lebaran exodus this year, as more people chose air travel to return to their hometown for Idul Fitri.

The state-controlled airline’s average load factor — which indicates how much an airline makes use of its seat capacity — went up to 74 percent from June 24 to July 5, a day before Idul Fitri, on all of its domestic routes, Benny S. Butarbutar, Garuda Indonesia’s vice president of corporate communication, said on Saturday (09/07).

Benny did not give a figure for last year’s Idul Fitri holiday.

Still, the latest figure could mark a turnaround for Garuda. The full-service airline had seen its load factor dip to 69 percent in the first three months of this year, compared to 74 percent in the same period last year, as weak economic growth forced cost-conscious travelers to opt out of the airline’s services.

Garuda added 32,000 more seats on 132 extra flights, 112 of which are on international routes, between June 24 to July 17 to cater for Indonesians during the annual Lebaran exodus, Benny said.

“This represents a 35 percent increase in our extra capacity from the same period last year,” Benny said.

The National Police estimated 17.6 million people made the travel back to their hometown during the Lebaran exodus this year. Ouf of that figure, 4.6 million chose air travel, up 7.6 percent from a year ago as people’s purchasing power has increased and local airlines offer new fleets and routes.

Air travelers met with relatively few problems during this year’s Lebaran exodus compared to their peers taking land routes, who were met by hellish traffic jams on toll roads across Java.

Red Bull apologises to Indonesia over offensive ad

Red Bull has publicly apologised for shooting a commercial in which an athlete performed acrobatic stunts across one of Indonesia’s ancient holy temples, an official said Thursday.

Red Bull has issued an apology in Indonesia’s national newspapers admitting it shot an advert at the 9th-century Borobudur temple “without permission from the appropriate authorities”

The energy drink manufacturer issued an apology in national newspapers admitting it shot the video at the 9th-century Borobudur temple “without permission from the appropriate authorities”.

The video — in which a famous “free running” athlete is shown jumping between the temple’s stone stupas — triggered outrage in Indonesia, where Borobudur is a revered Buddhist site and national icon.

In one scene, the athlete is seen walking past a sign clearly stating “No Climbing” in both English and Indonesian before performing acrobatics throughout the UNESCO-listed heritage site.

The video was shot secretly despite the crew having been issued a warning by temple guards, Borobudur Conservation Agency head Marsis Sutopo told AFP.

“They must have shot again while our guards were not looking,” he said.

The video, uploaded online on March 18, sparked outrage within Indonesia and prompted the government to threaten a legal suit against Red Bull.

Authorities later issued a warning to the drink company after determining no physical damage had been incurred.

Red Bull met with government officials in early June and agreed to place formal apologies in national newspapers.

“We want to set an example because we painstakingly try to conserve this historical site,” education ministry official Hilmar Farid told AFP.

“It was obvious as there was a “No Climbing” sign there too.”

Red Bull have also been asked to shoot a new video explaining the importance of protecting holy sites, Farid added.

Starbucks barista from Indonesia Ryan Wibawa competes in the World Brewers Cup finals

“It was like a dream come true,” said Wibawa, a Starbucks barista from Indonesia.  I felt very humbled and honored to represent my country in an international competition. The experience was the best teacher.”

Wibawa was matched against 36 competitors from all over the world at the championships, which took place from June 23-25 in Dublin, Ireland. As part of the competition, he crafted three coffee beverages that were judged on aroma, flavor, taste, acidity, body and balance. Wibawa also had to impress the judges with his customer service skills.

“The competition was hard, but it was a great challenge for me,” he said. “No words can describe the feeling,” he said. “From every competition I gain something, new knowledge, new friends and new skills.”

Although a competitor from Japan took first place, Wibawa is proud to have ranked among the top 25.

Wibawa was first exposed to coffee when he joined Starbucks two years ago. He learned quickly and developed an enthusiasm for all things coffee, which led to being selected as his district’s coffee master in 2014. A year later, he won Starbucks Indonesia’s Barista Championships and ranked number one in the Indonesian Brewers Cup Championship. In February 2016, he placed in the top three at the China and Asia Pacific (CAP) region’s Starbucks Barista Championships. His vast experience paved the way for competing in Dublin.

“Participating in a world competition definitely had a different feeling,” said Wibawa. “The competitors from all around the world had excellent coffee skills. It was a tough competition and a great learning experience.”

When Wibawa is not competing, he works at Indonesia’s first Starbucks Reserve store in Jakarta, where he delights customers with his coffee craft. He also shares his expertise by training other Starbucks partners at Indonesia’s third Starbucks Reserve location in Bandung.

“I am very lucky and grateful to have a very supportive family, friends and all Starbucks partners,” he said. “They gave me the strength to compete in the World Brewers Cup competition.”
