  • Zara campaign featuring model with freckles sparks debate in China

Zara campaign featuring model with freckles sparks debate in China

Spanish fashion retailer Zara appears to have inadvertently sparked off a social media furore over the appearance of freckled Chinese model Jing Wen in one of its recent ads. In China, spots on the face are generally considered blemishes and are associated with disease and old age. Freckles are somewhat rare. In a country where racial homogeneity is a touchstone for beauty, outliers – the bushy eyebrowed, the wavy haired – are unlikely to be considered attractive. In the fashion industry, however, it’s these outliers who tend to have the unique, striking looks that brands prefer for their ambassadors.

Despite hating her freckles as a child, Guangzhou model Jing Wen eventually learned to accept and capitalise on her point of difference. As a model for such brands as Calvin Klein and H&M, her face has even been called “iconic” by China’s media. Even so, her recent work with Zara has produced an outcry among local netizens who claim the use of the model intentionally “uglifies” the Chinese people.

A BBC report on the freckled Chinese model quoted some disgruntled users of the Weibo microblog as voicing their anger over the images. “Such pictures featuring an Asian model with freckles and an expressionless pie-shaped face mislead Westerners’ impressions about Asian women,” said one user, “and can lead to racism against Asian women.”

A spokesperson for Zara interviewed by Pear Video website commented that the advertisements were targeted at their global market, and not specifically at China.

“The aesthetics of the Spanish people are different,” they said, adding “our models are all photographed purely, the pictures aren’t changed, and they’re not modified.”

Zara’s response has provoked considerable debate within China on the issue, with some claiming the model has been bullied only by her fellow Chinese, and that more should be done to help China’s people embrace beauty in diversity. Others have called into question the false patriotism of those too eager to mount an attack on foreign brands.

  • Inditex suffers from late coming winter

Inditex suffers from late coming winter

Zara owner Inditex has posted slow like-for-like sales growth due to the unusually warm autumn and adverse currency moves. Inditex, which also owns upmarket label Massimo Dutti and teen label Bershka, posted a 3 per cent rise in like-for-like sales in the six months to the end of November after an “extraordinarily warm September”. Sales bounced back somewhat to 5 per cent in October and November.

The fashion giant reported an increase in earnings before interest and tax of €3.07 billion from the previous corresponding period.

In the first nine months of the year, the world’s largest fashion retailer reported a 3 per cent increase in sales to €18.4 billion and a 4 per cent rise in net profits to €2.4 billion.

According to Inditex, the company didn’t have to cut clothing prices from September like its rivals, which resulted in margin growth of 108 basis points during the third quarter.

The clothing retailer maintained sales and margin guidance for the rest of the year.

Pablo Isla, Inditex chair and CEO, said the group’s strong business model, which continues to deliver solid structural growth in all markets, and its constant focus on developing the integrated store and online platform through continued enhancement of technology and systems, have contributed to its performance.

The company announced last September that all products from all its brands will be made available online by 2020, including in markets where it does not have any stores.

Isla had said that Inditex wants to make all fashion collections available to all customers wherever they are in the world.

“Even in those markets which do not currently have our bricks-and-mortar stores,” Isla added.

Other than Zara, Massimo Dutti and Bershka, Inditex also sells the brands Pull & Bear, Stradivarius, Oysho and Uterque across its network of almost 7500 physical shops. It operates online in 49 markets.

    Zara lipstick launched online

Zara lipstick goes on sale this week – but only online. The fast-fashion brand’s first lipstick collection – called Zara Ultimatte – marks a continuing expansion of its beauty and cosmetics offer. Sister brands Bershka and Pull&Bear already have makeup lines, targeting younger consumers.

Parent company Inditex says the collection was “inspired by the kind of makeup needed to create ad campaigns”. It is based on a colour palette created by British make-up artist Pat McGrath, (famous for working with Christian Dior and Armani Beauty, among others).

The French-made Zara lipstick collection was designed in Los Angeles, featuring 12 high-pigment lipsticks, eight liquid-matte lipsticks, a box kit with three red colours and a limited-edition, behind-the-scenes kit. Prices range from €7.95 to €19.95. While available only on the Zara website, the company will ship worldwide.

Zara confirms it is taking part in Black Friday, with huge discount

High street giant Zara has finally confirmed it will be taking part in this year’s Black Friday event. The retailer has remained very tight-lipped about its plans for the shopping event which officially takes place tomorrow, and has even opted against advertising its plans in its windows.

Speculation has been high as to whether the retailer would be taking part this year- following last year, which marked the first time Zara has been involved in the discount event.

But it has finally released details of the money its customers could save tomorrow.

Zara will be offering shopper 20% off selected departments for Black Friday.

Last year, there was a variety of products which the discount could be used on, including coats, shoes, tops and more.

Fans have been eagerly waiting for Zara’s Black Friday announcement. On Twitter @amarjhot said: “Still waiting on Zara to drop a Black Friday sale? … no? Ok.”

@CharlyOConnor said: “I need to place a Zara order but I’m holding out for the Black Friday sale – this is going to end up being a disaster I bet.”

And, @_JAEopardizes said: “Zara need to hurry up and put their Black Friday sale up.”

  • Zara Opens Its First Concept Fashion Store in Shanghai

Zara Opens Its First Concept Fashion Store in Shanghai

Fast-fashion retailer Inditex has opened its first Zara China concept store, in Shanghai’s CBD.

The store features digital services provided in collaboration with Alibaba’s Tmall platform to allow customers to buy limited-edition items via their mobile phone. Visitors can scan product barcodes to signal an attendant to bring clothes to a fitting room, and then make a digital payment if they decide to purchase.

Following lacklustre earnings last year, Zara is refocusing on digitisation, O2O services and social influencers to reach its target demographic.

Zara China was launched in 2006 and now operates more than 180 stores. China is home to Inditex’s second largest retail network after its home territory of Spain.

  • H&M Vietnam big expansion in birthday celebration

H&M Vietnam big expansion in birthday celebration

H&M Vietnam has opened two new stores, in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.

The HCMC store is located inside District 7’s Crescent Mall, managed by Savills Vietnam, while the Hanoi store is situated in Vincom Nguyen Chi Thanh.

Crescent Mall, comprising 45,000sqm of retail space, is one of the city’s earliest international-grade shopping centres and has been trading for about eight years. An extension adding 11,200sqm of retail space, is currently under construction and expected to open late next year, beneath a 25-storey office tower.

“Crescent Mall is fortunate to be in an area where expansion is still possible,” said Tu Thi Hong An, associate director of commercial leasing at Savills HCMC. “When compared to other areas in Ho Chi Minh, District 7 has been planned and well zoned by Phu My Hung. We hope that H&M will be very happy in this new location.”

According to Savills, retail turnover in Vietnam last year was US$129 billion, increasing 11 per cent year on year. From now until 2021, the retail market is forecast to grow steadily with the increased demand of leisure (10 per cent per annum), modern grocery (9 per cent) and apparel (6 per cent).

After entering Vietnam in September last year, H&M Vietnam now has six stores in both Hanoi and HCMC while its rival Zara’s taking time with two outlets, one each in HCMC and Hanoi.

Another fast-fashion brand, Uniqlo, is planning to expand into Vietnam next year.

  • Inditex to sell all its brands online by 2020

Inditex to sell all its brands online by 2020

Zara owner Inditex announced all products from all its brands will be made available online by 2020, including in markets where it does not have any stores.

Pablo Isla, Inditex chairman and CEO, announced they want to make all their fashion collections available to all their customers wherever they are in the world.

“Even in those markets which do not currently have our bricks-and-mortar stores,” Isla added.

Other than Zara, the world’s largest clothing retailer also sells the brands Pull & Bear, Massimo Dutti, Bershka, Stradivarius, Oysho and Uterque across its network of almost 7,500 physical shops. It also operates online in 49 markets.

In FY2017, Inditex’s online sales saw a 41-per cent increase to reach 10 per cent of group net sales, although it fell short compared to rival Swedish retailer H&M’s which made close to 12 per cent on online sales.

Isla said all of the Group’s brands will also be adopting the integrated stock management system by 2020 in all the countries in which there is a physical store presence.

He said the system would make it possible to fulfil online customer orders with store inventory. To date, integrated stock management is in place in Zara stores in 25 markets including Spain, France, Italy, China, the US, the UK and Mexico. Inditex currently has stores in 96 markets. The technology will be completely adopted across the whole group by 2020.

  • Inditex’s Uterqüe arrives in China in partnership with Tmall

Inditex’s Uterqüe arrives in China in partnership with Tmall

Zara sister label Uterque has opened a flagship on Alibaba’s Tmall to build brand awareness in China’s premium fashion market.

Uterque has yet to open any physical stores in China, but the company’s parent Inditex says China is definitely on the radar in the near future.

According to Alibaba Group news site Alizila, Uterque will continue its tradition of renewing the product selection in stores and online twice a week in China as well and customers of Tmall, Alibaba’s B2C marketplace, will have immediate access to all of the label’s newly launched clothes.

“With the rapid growth of the market for high-end goods on Tmall, more and more premium fashion brands from Europe and North America have joined the platform, even opening a store on Tmall ahead of its brick-and-mortar roll-out,” said Anita Lyu, VP of Tmall Fashion.

She said launching online in advance of opening physical stores helps brands understand the market first.

“Through partnering with Tmall, brands can receive accurate feedback from Chinese users and leverage that to design an overall strategy that suits the China market,” Lyu said. “Meanwhile, tapping Tmall can help boost brand awareness and open up markets more quickly.”

Inditex operates more than 7448 stores worldwide under eight brands, including Zara, Zara Home, Massimo Dutti, Bershka, Pull and Bear, Stradivarius, Oysho and Uterque. Uterque is the last to open an official store on Tmall.

  • Zara China to start recycled garments program

Zara China to start recycled garments program

Spanish garments retailer Inditex, owner of international fashion brand Zara, is set to pilot test its at-home pick up service for recycled garments in China this September.

The initiative, which currently operates nationwide in Spain, is a central part of the group’s strategic commitment to the so-called ‘circular economy’. It has enabled the collection of more than 25,000 tonnes of garments in 21 markets since launching in 2016.

The plan was released as part of a report on Inditex’s performance last year, announced at its recent annual meeting. The report highlighted how the company’s integrated store and online model has boosted Inditex’s sustained growth.

“All of Inditex’s brands benefit from a robust integrated store and online platform,” said Inditex chairman and CEO Pablo Isla. “Last year, online sales already accounted for 12 per cent of the total in the 47 markets in which e-commerce platforms are available, representing annual growth of 41 per cent.”

He added that the model had enabled sustained growth over the years, coupled with the consistent creation of economic, social and environmental value.

Inditex has also recently embarked on a refurbishment drive for its entire global network of more than 7400 stores, accompanied by considerable growth in the Zara online platform.

The group’s earnings performance has enabled its dividend per share to increase by 70 per cent during the last five years.

  • Zara owner hits another revenue record

Zara owner hits another revenue record

Inditex Group announced a new first quarter record revenue of €5.7 billion, driven by flagship brand Zara.

This marks a 2 per cent increase in net sales growth, up from €5.6 billion in the first quarter of 2017, which was underpinned by solid business performance and same-store sales growth across all geographies.

Gross margin rose to 58.9 per cent, a 3 per cent increase year over year.

Inditex’s chairman and CEO, Pablo Isla, noted that “the strength of the integrated store and online model, bolstered by continued innovation, is driving solid growth and notable job creation.”

During this period, the Group continued to push its ‘integrated store model’, with many stores receiving refurbishments and expansions to bring them up to date, while launching online sales in Australia and New Zealand.

Zara launched its first stores in Buffalo, New York and Murray, Utah in the United States, as well as in Pune, India, while bringing its augmented reality technology, ZaraAR, to 130 flagships globally.

ZaraAR allows customers to use their phones to view AR models wearing Zara outfits either by holding the app up to a sensor within stores, or over online delivery packaging, offering a chance to easily preview what the clothes look like in motion.

As a part of its Employee Profitsharing Plan, Inditex distributed €42 million among 88000 employees.

The plan rewards employees with at least two years service in its stores, manufacturing facilities, logistics platforms, brands and subsidiaries, and commits to pay out 10 per cent of the annual growth in new profit.

Competitor H&M Group will publish its six-month report for 2018 on 28 June.

  • Zara Stratford flagship store pioneers new approach to integrating stores and online

Zara Stratford flagship store pioneers new approach to integrating stores and online

A new Zara flagship unveiled in London this week gives an insight into its new global direction.

High in technology, compact in footprint, Zara believes the new Westfield Stratford store concept will “transform the customer shopping experience at its heart”, integrating online and in-store shopping.

It is the Spanish fast-fashion retailer’s first store in the world to introduce a fourth section after women’s, men’s and kid’s: online. A separate area has been designed to house two automated order collection points.

The system’s optical barcode reader scans QR or Pin codes that customers receive when they place orders online. Behind the pick-up point, a robotic arm collects trays and organises the packages optimally according to their size, delivering orders for customers to collect in seconds. The system can handle 2400 orders simultaneously, enabling shoppers to collect purchases made through Zara’s e-commerce platforms. Online orders are available in store on the same day if made before 2pm, or the next day if made in the afternoon.

Gallery of New Zara Stratford flagship can be viewed below :

Zara says the customer service features go beyond integrating online and offline shopping. The new store aims to create a “seamless, convenient and enjoyable shopping experience”. Interactive mirrors equipped with RFID readers can detect the garment a customer is holding, enabling customers to see what a complete outfit will look like in the mirror.

Zara staff will use iPads to advise customers and accept payments on the shop floor. Customers can pay using their mobile phones via the Zara app or the Inditex Group app, InWallet.

And to complement the regular cashier desks, there is a self-checkout area with a system that automatically identifies garments being purchased. Customers can simply confirm their items on a screen at the self-checkout before paying with their cards or mobile phones.

The 4500sqm store has been under renovation since January and was temporarily replaced with the brand’s first pop-up store for the purchase and collection of online orders only, some of the features of which are replicated in the Zara flagship.

Inditex chairman and CEO Pablo Isla described the reopening of the Zara flagship as an important moment for the company.

“We are in a unique position as we enjoy a global sales platform that fully integrates stores and online. In recent years we have invested in the most advanced technology and optimised our stores for this aim. Our business model combines stores and digital seamlessly, and we are ready for the opportunities that this brings with current and new customers,” he said.

From a design perspective, the store has a two-storey facade without shop windows on the first floor, providing a transparent view of the store’s interior architectural features and collections.

The refurbishment of the Zara flagship follows the brand’s introduction of an augmented reality experience at 120 flagship stores worldwide for a fortnight earlier this year.

  • ZARA Reopens Its Renovated Flagship Store at Vivocity

ZARA Reopens Its Renovated Flagship Store at Vivocity

Zara has reopened its flagship store in VivoCity, Singapore. This newly refurbished establishment showcases the brand’s latest global concept with its 2,700 square meters sales area – approximately doubling the area it had before the refurbishment. It will be distributed in two stores, with the latest collections of Woman, Basic, TRF, and Kids housed under one roof, and a separate store dedicated to Man.

The store, which features a new interior design, stands out for its façade without windows, providing a transparent view of the store’s architectural features, collections and instore mannequins. Designed to provide continuous and comfortable light, the back-lit ceiling provides soft ambient lighting which contributes to a sensory shopping experience. The space invites the customer to enjoy as never before the experience of feeling, touching, observing and interacting with the merchandise.

This store also incorporates the green-building criteria stipulated by Zara’s parent group Inditex. As an eco-efficient store, it consumes 20% less energy and 40% less water compared to a conventional store. To ensure the store continues to meet these energy reduction targets, its energy use is regulated by a central control center at Zara’s headquarters in Arteixo, northwest Spain.

As part of Zara’s commitment to improve the quality of service and shopping experience for customers, the new store introduces the Group’s latest technological developments. This includes Radio Frequency Identification Technology (RFID) which helps to track the location of garments quickly and precisely to make the products most in demand by customers rapidly available on the shop floor, ensuring customers’ shopping needs are fulfilled.

  • Zara Debuts Augmented Reality Retail Experience for Limited Time in Select Stores Worldwide

Zara Debuts Augmented Reality Retail Experience for Limited Time in Select Stores Worldwide

Zara will unveil an augmented reality experience running for two weeks in select stores worldwide. The innovative concept superimposes state-of-the-art technology on the retail environment, engaging customers both outside and inside the store to shop and to share like never before.

This made-to-measure augmented reality is enabled on mobile devices via the Zara AR app. The activation plays out at three different sites: store windows, centrally-located podiums, and atop e-commerce boxes. When smartphones are positioned at the graphic signage, models Léa Julian and Fran Summers seemingly come to life as 7 to 12-second sequences in people’s screen displays. Incredibly realistic and proportioned according to each setting, they naturally pose, move around, and even speak while dressed in the SS18 Zara Studio Collection. All of their looks can be purchased instantly through a single touch on the Zara AR app, as well as in store.

The experience will be highly visible from the street, with store windows appearing completely empty aside from bold signage encouraging people to access the Zara AR app. Downloading is easy: simply connect to the dedicated Wi-Fi network, or else by QR code, via iTunes and Google Play, or through the link on zara.com or the app. In addition to the shopping feature, a social media sharing feature invites people to take and send photos alongside the holograms, establishing a virtual connection that seems remarkably real. To maximize the limited-time experience, different sequences of new looks will be introduced after the first week.

Zara Augmented Reality is the conception of Paris-based creative director, Ezra Petronio, who developed this high-quality experience and app with HOLOOH, a French company, in addition to research partner, INRIA (the French National Institute for computer science and applied mathematics). The 12 dynamic sequences were captured as holograms in a 170-square-metre studio involving 68 cameras, among the largest recording systems of its kind in the world. Petronio, who is also the co-founder of Self Service magazine, enhanced Issue 47 (September, 2017) with a shop-able augmented reality component.

With augmented reality finding more and more real-world applications, the Zara experience demonstrates how innovation, inspiration and additive technology can reimagine conventional retail. Engaging in both the store environment and the app simultaneously, shoppers will discover ease of use alongside their sense of awe. Zara’s global reach brings the advanced renderings to a wide and inclusive public. In a sense, this exciting concept could not have been more natural for the retailer: as the dedicated branding makes clear, augmented reality has been within Z-AR-A all along.
