Business Class Airfares Set to Skyrocket in 2026 Amid Robust Economic Conditions

The current solid economic situation is predicted to lead to a rise in the cost of business class travel during the year. Meanwhile, the prices for economy class are projected to stay relatively steady, according to market experts.

American Express Global Business Travel Consulting has suggested that a robust demand may trigger a 7.4% surge in business class fares for routes from Asia to the Middle East.

Routes from Asia to Europe could see a fare increase of around 4.8%, while a 3.4% hike is expected for Asia to Australia journeys.

The consulting firm also noted that the highly popular route between India and Singapore might witness a significant rise in fares. The air passenger traffic on this route reached an all-time high in 2024, with more than 5.5 million passengers according to data from Singapore Changi Airport.

American Express Global Business Travel Consulting further mentioned that a hike in business class fares from Singapore to the US is anticipated. From 2026 onwards, all flights departing from Singapore will be required to use sustainable aviation fuel.

    Predictions for the Future

Linus Bauer, the founder of aviation consultancy BAA & Partners, anticipates that passenger traffic in the Asia-Pacific region will increase moderately by 4% to 6%, equivalent to 150-200 million passengers, taking the total tally to approximately 3.8 billion.

He believes that 2026 will bring a more mature pricing environment where economy fares will gradually decline, while premium yields will remain relatively stable.

In the high-density, price-sensitive markets of South-east Asia, South Asia and Oceania, Bauer anticipates that average economy fares will be 5% to 10% lower than in 2025. This decline is expected due to an increase in narrow-body capacity and a larger market share for budget airlines.

On the other hand, business and first-class fares are projected to remain steady or improve modestly by 2% to 5%. This stability is predicted to be supported by a stronger demand for premium leisure travel and a resurgence in corporate travel.

    Challenges Ahead

Rico Merkert, a transportation and supply chain management professor at the University of Sydney, warns that inflationary pressures, such as increased airport and labour costs, will burden airlines. These costs are likely to be passed on to passengers, resulting in higher airfares, unless jet fuel prices remain low.

However, he adds that the continued expansion of budget airlines and new entrants into the low-cost segment should help maintain the affordability of air travel in the Asia-Pacific region in 2026.

    Questions & Answers

What factors could potentially lead to a rise in business class fares?
Strong demand and regulatory requirements to use sustainable aviation fuel are two factors that could drive up business class fares.

What trends are expected in the economy class segment?
Economy fares are projected to gradually decline due to increased competition from budget carriers and an increase in narrow-body capacity.

How might inflationary pressures impact airfares?
Inflationary pressures such as higher airport and labour costs could lead to a rise in airfares, as airlines are likely to pass these costs on to passengers.

Billionaires’ Playground: Sports Teams Emerge as Top Asset Class Among Ultra-Rich, J.P. Morgan Reveals

Sports have emerged as a significant investment focus for billionaires, being viewed not only as an interest but also as a viable asset class, as highlighted by a report from J.P. Morgan.

    Billionaires Investing in Sports

Approximately 20% of billionaire principals globally now hold a majority share in sports teams, as revealed in a research study named “2025 Principal Discussions Report” commissioned by J.P. Morgan’s 23 Wall Team, a specialized unit providing institutional coverage to top-tier families served by the bank. This figure is a significant leap from the mere 6% recorded in 2022. Furthermore, 34% have investments in stadiums and sports teams.

In a ranking of key sectors for investments, sports came in fourth place, trailing behind real estate, technology, and energy.

The Intersection of Interests and Investments

Given the strong focus on sports, it is not surprising to find that the hobbies and interests of billionaires are closely connected. Out of the top 10 activities that billionaires are most passionate about, six are sports-related, encompassing tennis, winter sports, golf, gym workouts, fishing, and cycling.

The report pointed out the enormity of sports investment, stating, “With the combined estimated value of US and European franchises standing at approximately $400 billion, and the total worth of sports Mergers and Acquisitions and investment having increased eight times over the past five years, this asset class has gone beyond just fandom. For many principals, ownership is both a strategic and emotional pursuit – a means to unite family unity, institutional capital, and generational legacy around a shared passion and enduring value.”

Understanding Success: More than Financial Gain

While a good return on investment is important, the surveyed billionaires indicated that other aspects hold higher value for them. Over 90% believe that time, health, and relationships – rather than money – are the true markers of a fulfilling life. Nearly 85% define success as their ability to “help others progress”, laying emphasis on creative thinking and values-based leadership.

As Andrew L. Cohen, the executive chairman of the global private bank at J.P. Morgan, commented, “Principals remind us that prosperity is about much more than financial capital. Their viewpoints challenge us to reassess what building enduring wealth entails, placing importance on purpose, connections, and stewardship at the core of their journey.”

The findings of the report were derived from comprehensive discussions conducted between March and August 2025 with 111 families spanning 28 countries, boasting a combined net worth exceeding $500 billion.

Qualcomm unveils Gigabit-class connected vehicle platform

Chipmaker Qualcomm has announced the launch of a new version of its connected car reference platform that incorporates a a Gigabit-class LTE modem.

The new reference platform is designed to allow carmakers to easily integrate new wireless and networking technologies into their vehicles, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, BLE and global navigation satellite system (GNSS).

Qualcomm has also developed a reference hardware module in two band configurations, one for North America and one for the rest of the world.

The module design can support up to four antennas to take advantage of the 4×4 MIMO capabilities of the integrated modem.

“Connected cars are becoming intelligent sensors on the road, not only using data for consumer use cases such as Wi-Fi hotspots and video streaming, but also collecting and transmitting critical, rich real-time information about road conditions, map updates and driver status,” Qualcomm SVP and GM for automative Patrick Little said.

“As a leader in car connectivity, Qualcomm Technologies is well positioned to address the tremendous data demand, helping automakers integrate the broad set of technologies required by a new generation of connected vehicles.”

Qualcomm separately announced it has established a new consortium with SWARCO Traffic Systems and the University of Kaiserslautern to carry out the first Cellular-V2X (Vehicle to Everything) trial based on the 3GPP Release 14.

The trial will focus on Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) and Vehicle-to-Pedestrian (V2P) direct communication, as well as Vehicle-to-Network (V2N) wide area communications.

The new Connected Vehicle to Everything of Tomorrow (ConVeX) consortium will conduct the trial with funding from the participating organizations as well as the German Federal Ministry of Transportation and Digital Infrastructure.
