Wines and spirits contribution to LVMH luxury business

It has been a bubbly nine months for the LVMH luxury business – with the exception of its wines and spirits division, which was hampered by supply constraints.

Revenue grew by 14 per cent for the period to reach €30.1 billion (US$35.4 billion).

With organic revenue growth of 12 per cent, the third quarter continues the trend for the year, says the group. The revenue increase was despite a negative currency impact of 5 per cent and a positive structural impact of 7 per cent, reflecting the integration of Christian Dior Couture.

All business groups recorded double-digit organic growth, with the exception of wines and spirits where growth was 8 per cent. Champagne volumes were up 4 per cent, with particularly strong demand in Europe and Japan. Hennessy cognac had a volume increase of 9 per cent despite a third-quarter decline related to limited supply.

LVMH’s selective retailing business group had organic revenue growth of 12 per cent. Online sales grew at a steady pace, and DFS had sustained growth, particularly in Hong Kong and Macau. The T Galleria store in Cambodia has also developed well, says the group.

Organic growth of 14 per cent was recorded by the fashion and leather goods business group. It attributes this to innovation, such as the launch of Louis Vuitton’s first smartwatch.

“The qualitative development of the distribution network continues, as illustrated by the opening of the Maison Louis Vuitton Vendome in Paris, which brings together under one roof all the savoir-faire of the maison,” says the group.

Highlights during the period included Fendi opening stores in the US and Rimowa being consolidated. Donna Karan was sold at the end of last year.

There was also 14 per organic growth in perfumes and cosmetics. Perfumes benefitted from the launch of the eau de parfum Miss Dior. Guerlain rolled out Mon Guerlain fragrance internationally, and Fenty Beauty by Rihanna had an “exceptional” start.

Watches and jewellery had 13 per cent organic revenue growth, with Bulgari achieving “a remarkable performance” with the rapid growth of its signature jewellery collections Serpenti, Diva and B.Zero1.

LVMH sales soar as shoppers return to luxury

LVMH sales surged 15 per cent in the latest quarter to €9.88 billion (US$10.477 billion).

That was nearly €400 million more than analysts had been expecting, with the result driven across all of the luxury group’s business units.

Fashion and leather goods, which account for more than half the company’s turnover, rose 15 per cent during the quarter. That compares with static growth the same quarter last year. Fendi and Louis Vuitton were singled out by analysts as strong performers, with Celine, Kenzo, Loewe and Berluti also showing progress.

LVMH’s leather and fashion brands also include Dior, Emilio Pucci, Fendi, Givenchy, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, Moynat, Rimowa and Thomas Pink.

‘Selective retailing’,  the group’s second-largest division, had been dragged down by DFS in prior quarters, offsetting a strong performance by Sephora cosmetics chain, observed Deborah Aitken, an analyst with Bloomberg Intelligence. But the latest quarter it showed improvement of 11 per cent. Sephora continued to gain market share globally and recorded double-digit revenue and profit growth for the quarter.

“This could be an important turnaround,” said Aitken.

Liquor – including brands such as Cape Mentelle, Chandon, Cloudy Bay, Dom Pérignon, Glenmorangie, Hennessy, Krug, Moët & Chandon and Veuve Clicquot – was the second best performing sector, up 13 per cent organically. Hennessy was a star performer.

Sales of watches and jewellery also rebounded, rising 11 per cent. Bulgari continued to gain market share and Tag Heuer successfully launched its new Connected Modular 45 watch.

And the perfume and cosmetics business grew sales by 12 per cent.

Fung Global Retail observed that Parfums Christian Dior reported good growth and Guerlain launched a new women’s fragrance called Mon Guerlain during the quarter. Parfums Givenchy benefited from the success of lipstick lines, which saw rapid development in Asia. In addition, the Kat Von D brand launched exclusively in January 2017 at Sephora in France.

    Managing expectations

While the company was clearly pleased with its results it did warn shareholders to keep their expectations modest, pointing out the growth had come against a 2016 quarter when the industry was struggling with Paris terror attacks. It said such levels of growth should not be expected for the full year.

LVMH shares rose to a record in Paris after the results were announced.

The LVMH figures will set the standard for a raft of luxury retail earnings due to be released in the coming days. Prada reports results today and Kering, parent of Gucci, on April 25.

  • Rimowa wins lawsuit against Korean copycat

Rimowa wins lawsuit against Korean copycat

Luggage manufacturer Rimowa has won a lawsuit against the owner of the Holly brand in South Korea.

A Seoul court has acknowledged that the grooved design is a defining characteristic of Rimowa products so deserves to be protected from imitation.

Saying the Holly suitcase has a similar grooved design and could be mistaken for a Rimowa product, the court slapped a ban on further distribution or sale of the Holly suitcase to protect consumers from confusion.

“We couldn’t be happier that the court acknowledged the brand character of our grooved design,” says Rimowa president/CEO Dieter Morszeck.

Rimowa’s first aluminum suitcase with the signature grooves was produced in Germany in 1950.

  • Louis Vuitton buys Rimowa luggage

    Louis Vuitton buys Rimowa luggage

French luxury group Louis Vuitton has bought a controlling 80 per cent stake in the Rimowa luggage business.

Dieter Morszeck, grandson of the founder of Rimowa, believes partnering with the LVMH Group will preserve “the spirit of excellence and the long-term vision that have inspired his family and the company’s employees for over a century”.

Morszeck will sell a majority stake to the LVMH Group while continuing to hold equity in the business and maintaining his leadership functions, resulting in Rimowa becoming the first German Maison of the LVMH Group.

Upon completion of the transaction, Alexandre Arnault will be appointed co-CEO of Rimowa.

Founded in Cologne in 1898, luggage and leather goods maker Rimowa has become renowned for innovative, quality luggage over the course of the 20th century.

Since its creation by Paul Morszeck, innovation has been at the heart of Rimowa’s strategy. In 1937, his son Richard launched the first aluminium suitcase available on the market. The aluminium structure comprising parallel grooves makes the luggage instantly recognisable and has played its part in building the reputation of Rimowa among a sophisticated international clientele. His son Dieter designed the first waterproof metal case in 1976, since which time Rimowa suitcases have become the travelling companion of choice for the greatest filmmakers, photographers and journalists.

Dieter Morszeck said: “My grandfather founded Rimowa more than a century ago and I joined the company 44 years ago. By entrusting this family venture to the LVMH Group, we are guaranteeing a promising future to all Rimowa employees. Over the past two years I have had the opportunity to establish close ties with the Arnault family, and in particular with Alexandre. Alexandre and I have discussed at length the attractive development prospects available to us and the common values that we share. I am delighted that he is joining Rimowa and I have full confidence in his ability to accelerate the development of the business by my side.”

Arnault added: “Rimowa is a superb business which I have followed as a loyal customer for many years. It has revolutionised the luggage industry for over a century, its suitcases are renowned for their unique performance, quality and design. I am honored to join Rimowa and to be working alongside Dieter.”

Morszeck has created the Rimowa Dieter Morszeck Foundation to which a substantial part of the sale proceeds will be donated. The foundation aims to support projects in scientific research, public health, education and humanitarian aid both in Germany and internationally.

State-owned CDFG, which operates a brand company in Cambodia, comments: “We are the top luxury retail store in Phnom Penh providing a high-end shopping destination to tourists and business travellers. Customers can choose from more than 200 brands from around the world.”

On opening, branded boutiques will include Longines, Tissot, Swarovski, Samsonite and Prada, with further boutiques from Armani, Coach and Furla to be unveiled at the end of this year.

    SILK ROAD TARGET

The Phnom Penh development is part of an international expansion policy targeting the so-called ‘Silk Road Economic Belt’ to which CDFG parent, China Travel Group, is committed.

Cambodia is a key market within the plan: CDFG has already opened its Angkor duty free store in December 2014 (where it competes with DFS), followed a year later by the Shihanoukville duty free store in December 2015. CDFG says it has “the full support at all levels of government in Cambodia”.

CDFG – which claims to be China’s largest retailer of luxury merchandise – says that with its three stores in place it “will write a new chapter in the tourism industry in Cambodia”.

To celebrate today’s soft opening, promotions are in place with a 15% discount on all shopping; a chance to experiencing the VIP shopping service; and a gift on purchases over $100. Scanning the company’s official WeChat account, or clicking ‘like’ on the company’s official Facebook, also qualifies for a surprise gift.

  • Rimowa leads the charge of new luxury retailers

Rimowa, the German luxury luggage group, is set to call 5 Martin Place home as the retail sector looks to the upmarket brands for revenue growth.

The label is being distributed exclusively through Hunt Leather, which itself has a presence in the MLC Centre.

Sophie Hunt, whose parents founded Hunt, said the group also runs the Longchamp Boutique, of which there are four stores nationally and Hunt’s own five sites throughout Australia.

Ms Hunt said the group opens a newly branded store in Australia every year and, despite the massive growth of its online business, it still invests in bricks and mortar.

“Demand is high for luxury brands and over the years that we have stocked Rimowa, we have been pleased with the high turnover of the items,” Ms Hunt said.

“Finding the right location was imperative to launch the store as a stand-alone and certainly, 5 Martin Place is where we want to be.”

Ms Hunt said Rimowa is considered a destination brand and the demographics of Martin Place, being in the heart of bankers and lawyers, was the perfect fit.

“We will be looking to expand and while online sales are strong, having a store is still our preferred option,” Ms Hunt said.

DEXUS Property is leasing out 5 Martin Place as part of the redevelopment and has also signed up the H&M associate Collection of Style, and the Canadian apparel group Kit & Ace, in what was the former Commonwealth Bank chamber.

Rimowa’s opening in December – the date is still be decided – comes as luxury retail is making a comeback.

CBRE  Australia head of retail tenant representation said the country offers significant opportunities for luxury retailers at a time when the Asian market is reaching saturation point.

In a new CBRE report, The Future of Luxury Retail in Asia Pacific: New Demand Drivers and Shifting Occupier Requirements, it says most major luxury retailers are now well established in Asia-Pacific with China and Hong Kong being two of the most penetrated markets at 89 per cent and 81 per cent respectively.

“However, following several years of rapid expansion, these markets are approaching saturation point and several luxury brands have halted expansion amid sluggish sales,” the report says.

“Conversely, the penetration rate of luxury retail in Australia is just 50 per cent – primarily due to the dominance of department stores in this segment of the market.”

However, the tide is shifting, as luxury brands launch stand-alone stores in Australia to exert stronger control over their business operations and brand.

In 2014, a total of 16 luxury retailers entered Australia or opened their first stand-alone store in five cities – double the total in 2012 and 2013 combined.

“Australia, unlike much of Asia, is far from saturation point in terms of luxury retailing,” Mr Starling said.

“At present we are witnessing the largest influx of new luxury brands in the country’s history. This is coming from two distinct sectors, with fashion/ready-to-wear and jewellery retailers being the most inquisitive.”

Mr Starling said the inquiry was being driven by larger groups such as LVMH, Kering Group and Richemont, but brands such as Valentino and Moncler also had Australia on the radar.

“Another trend we are witnessing involves brands being more willing to seek space in shopping-centre environments,” Mr Staring said.

CBRE national director retail services Alistair Palmer said a new luxury precinct was also poised to open Pacific Fair on the Gold Coast in 2016, and Chadstone was planning to double its luxury offer.

An increase in Chinese tourist arrivals was helping to support the luxury retail sector in Australia, Mr Palmer said, particularly in light of the fall in the Australian dollar.

“Sydney Airport is also establishing a new luxury precinct, with many of the tier 1 and affordable luxury brands opening in order to capture the Asian tourist market,” he noted.
