  • Shinsegae to launch SSG.com as separate unit

Shinsegae to launch SSG.com as separate unit

Shinsegae Group will launch a brand new entity that specializes in e-commerce next month in an effort to become Korea’s answer to Amazon. Titled SSG.com, Choi Woo-jung, vice president of Shinsegae’s e-commerce division, will be the CEO. “[Through the new entity], we hope to maintain the existing SSG.com brand and maximize brand power by raising [people’s] awareness of our professionality in the online market,” the company said in a statement.

The latest move reflects Shinsegae’s ambition to become the country’s top e-commerce company by gathering its scattered online businesses.

Shinsegae Group in December spun off Emart Mall and Shinsegae Mall from Emart and Shinsegae. The board of directors in January voted to merge the two new entities.

It has already been running SSG.com as an e-commerce website that offers access to its various online malls, but it is currently only a customer-facing interface, not a company in its own right.

SSG.com’s sales goal for this year is 3.1 trillion won ($2.8 billion), which is 29.1 percent higher than the sales recorded by the online platform last year.

The company hopes to reach its ambition through aggressive marketing, especially on raising the efficiency of delivery services.

It will make a heavy investment on raising the delivery speed by establishing an additional distribution center in Gimpo, Gyeonggi. It will be the third distribution center, and is scheduled to open in the second half of this year.

“With the official launch of SSG.com, we are getting ready to become the country’s top e-commerce enterprise,” said Choi in a statement.

“Instead of just selling goods online, we are also planning to function as a ‘Linker’ by connecting consumers online and offline like [offering them the platform to] share their lifestyles on the internet.”

  • King Power duty free monopoly ending soon

King Power duty free monopoly ending soon

Thailand’s much-maligned airport duty-free monopoly appears set to be nearing an end. For years, major Thai retailers have complained that incumbent operator King Power has controlled the retail offer – and prices – at Thailand’s largest airports, especially Suvarnabhumi outside Bangkok. Frequent travellers often comment that airport ‘duty-free’ prices are higher than at other airports in the region, including Singapore and Hong Kong.

On Wednesday, state-owned Airports of Thailand (AOT) approved guidelines for concessions for duty-free and commercial activities at its airports, the first step in opening up retail spaces to other companies.

According to Reuters, AOT will offer three retail licences at an upcoming auction, clearing the way for Thai retail giants Central Group and The Mall Group, along with South Korea’s Hotel Shilla, to enter the fray.

King Power’s current licence ends next year.

AOT says contracts will cover duty-free retail, commercial businesses such as food and beverage outlets and pick-up counters for shoppers who buy goods in town and collect them at the airport after clearing customs and immigration.

  • Smaller duty-free alcohol allowance and GST relief for overseas shopping

Smaller duty-free alcohol allowance and GST relief for overseas shopping

From midnight tonight, Singapore duty-free allowances will be cut by about a third for returning travellers. Other allowances have also been reduced. Travellers staying outside of Singapore for fewer than 48 hours will be liable for 7 per cent GST on items bought overseas worth more than SG$100 – down from the previous threshold of $150. For travellers outside the country for a period longer than 48 hours, the $600 threshold will similarly be lowered, to $500.

The changes were announced yesterday by Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat as part of the nation’s new Budget. From April 1, the alcohol concession will also be lowered from three litres of wine or beer to two litres. The spirits cap remains at one litre.

According to the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore and Singapore Customs, the cuts to Singapore duty-free allowances are designed to support the city state’s existing tax intake in the face of increasing international travel.

Returning travellers are required to declare taxable items on arrival, and have been advised to keep purchase receipts to assist in calculating any taxes due. Advance declaration and payment is available via the Customs @ SG mobile app or web portal. Failure to declare or a false declaration can incur a fine of $10,000 as well as up to a year in prison.

  • The Shilla Duty Free partners with comics strip artists

The Shilla Duty Free partners with comics strip artists

The Shilla Duty Free is partnering with popular Chinese webtoon artists to boost its appeal to travelling Chinese shoppers. The travel retailer said that this is the first marketing partnership of its kind in the Korean duty free industry. Webtoons have become an increasingly influential media tool to connect closely with consumers, Shilla noted. “Unlike traditional advertisements, webtoons use storytelling that is easily relatable while utilising artists’ existing fandom.”

The partnership with two webtoon artists, Niu Hong Hong (牛轰轰) and Ruo Guan (弱冠), specifically targets Chinese women in their 20s to 30s – The Shilla Duty Free’s main customer base (as the charts below show, visitors between 21 and 40 made up 57.3 percent of Chinese arrivals in South Korea last year and those between 21 and 30 almost 31 percent).

Shilla’s stores are being featured in webtoons and the contents promoted through each artist’s social media platforms.

Real-time comments such as “I would like to shop there”; “I should visit there during my next visit to Korea”; and “I like the store interior” appear on the webtoons.

Besides introducing The Shilla Duty Free shops, the webtoons also highlight nine local eateries near the retailer’s flagship Seoul Store, showcasing the surrounding area as a local attraction. Since 2016, The Shilla Duty Free has promoted its local communities by introducing nearby restaurants through various channels such as The Shilla Online Duty Free in Chinese and its official Weibo account.

A spokesperson said, “The partnership with Chinese webtoon artists is a first in the industry. We expect to be able to connect better with Chinese customers. Creative marketing like this will be continued during the peak seasons such as Chinese Lunar New Year, the Mid-Autumn Festival and the National Day of China, to broaden the communication with our customers.”

  • Who visited Korea in 2018?

    Who visited Korea in 2018?

Chinese visitor arrivals in South Korea rose 14.9 percent year-on-year in 2018 to 4,789,512, according to new Korea Tourism Organization figures. Chinese arrivals in December 2018 rose 25.2 percent year-on-year. The results confirm a sustained recovery in Chinese tourism from March 2018 as Korean-Chinese relationships improved in the wake of the THAAD anti-missile system dispute that had devastated Chinese tourism for the previous year.

For the first two months of 2018 Chinese arrivals slumped 43.7 percent, heavily influencing the year-end result.

However, the 2018 performance was still far short of pre-THAAD levels. In 2016, 8,067,722 Chinese visited South Korea, 68 percent more than the 2018 tally and a 46.8 percent share of total arrivals, compared to last year’s 31.2 percent.

Japanese market buoyant but political concerns rise

The Japanese tourism market was buoyant in 2018, rising 27.6 percent to 2,948,527, a 19.2 percent share of arrivals. December saw a 33.5 percent rise year-on-year.

The combination of concerted Japanese visitor growth and a strong yen has been reflected in increased duty free spending. A report by The Korea Herald said that January 2019 sales to Japanese consumers at Lotte Duty Free’s flagship store in Myeong-dong, Seoul (the country’s biggest travel retail door) had surged 31 percent year-on-year, compared to 15 percent for all nationalities.

The same report said that Shinsegae Duty Free’s Myeong-dong store posted a 53 percent rise in sales to Japanese shoppers during the same period, while overall turnover at the flagship fell 1 percent.

But prospects for a continued boom in Japanese tourism may be marred by a worsening political dispute, this time between South Korea and Japan. A military row began on 20 December following an encounter between a Japanese plane and a South Korean destroyer.

The Japanese claimed that the South Korean warship aimed its fire-control radar at the aircraft while the Koreans contend that the ship was rescuing a North Korean ship drifting in international waters.

Several more ‘fly-buy’ incidents since then have escalated tensions, leading to fears that the row could “snowball into crisis”, as CNN wrote.

Departures of Korean nationals (along with Chinese and Japanese the key components of the Korean travel retail industry consumer mix) rose 8.3 percent year-on-year in 2018 to 28,695,983 and 3.8 percent in December to 2,495,279. The year ended much weaker than it began – five of the first six months saw double-digit increases, all of the final six months were under 6 percent.

  • Shinesegae targets US$90 million with a new brand

Shinesegae targets US$90 million with a new brand

Major South Korean travel retailer Shinsegae Group is set to launch an in-house developed cosmetics line, Yunjac, into the duty free channel at its Myeong-dong store in the capital city, Seoul. An ambitious sales target has been set for the brand. The opening on 2 February of an independent Yunjac cosmetics area adds to existing domestic market locations in Jung-gu and Gangnam in Seoul, and Centrum City in Busan. The brand was launched in October 2018.

Fashion, beauty and lifestyle specialist, Shinsegae International, which developed the 42-strong product line, has told The Moodie Davitt Report that it aims to make US$90 million in sales by 2020. Four travel retail exclusive sets are part of the product range.

The duty free exposure will promote Yunjac to a wider audience, with a particular focus on Chinese travellers. A Shinsegae Duty Free spokesman said: “The Myeong-dong store is a trendy shopping place where you can easily experience the world’s most popular brands. We will try our best to be the centre of world beauty. The line is targeting the global market including China.”

Yunjac, which means ‘nature’s masterpiece’, is chiefly built around skincare with some makeup and other smaller segments, also part of the portfolio. It is the result of several years research and preparation by Shinsegae International. The product development was a joint effort with global cosmetics maker Intercos and world-renowned botanical research institute Vitalab.

The manufacturing process involves extracting active ingredients from the best Korean herbs and combining them with state-of-the-art science. The end result is what Shinsegae describes as “the whole plant effect” which is claimed to restores the skin’s natural strength.

Yunjac’s 42 products are priced at around US$30 for cleansing products, US$100 for skincare and US$50 for mother and infant items, according to Shinsegae Duty Free.

  • Lotte to pursue reforms and investment in 2019

Lotte to pursue reforms and investment in 2019

Lotte Group Chairman Shin Dong-bin told affiliate CEOs that he wants reform and aggressive investment in 2019 during a biannual meeting on Wednesday. Shin missed the last meeting in July as he was serving time in prison for bribery related to former President Park Geun-hye. The first meeting of the year typically deals with each affiliate’s annual goals and direction.

In the first meeting with CEOs after his return, the chairman emphasized that the company was in need of innovation strong enough to rattle its existing business structure.

“We are about to face immense change in the future that is difficult to imagine,” he stressed to affiliate heads at the meeting. “Therefore we have to be thorough in predicting the future and devising preparations according to different scenarios. If we can’t come up with a clear vision or concrete plans, there will be an immense crisis.”

Shin pointed out that the group had been “passive” recently when it comes to making investment decisions, missing opportunities and waiting for too long.

He added that investment decisions have to be made continuously, even when revenue is low and in businesses that the company is doing well in so as to maintain an upper hand in the market.

He also mentioned the possibility of downsizing unprofitable businesses, citing Microsoft becoming global No. 1 by market cap last year after conducting reforms on its business portfolio.

“We should focus on areas with future growth potential and push for rationalization,” said Shin.

Digital transformation, an initiative he has been pushing for in the last few years, also reappeared in Wednesday’s speech.

“Compared to global companies, Lotte has a low investment rate in the IT sector and the fields invested in so far are [relatively] narrow,” he said, urging that the company needs to find ways to get one step closer to customers using existing assets like big data, brick-and-mortar stores and logistics infrastructure.

Recently recruited IT professionals were also called into the meeting to share their opinions on Lotte’s current situation regarding digitalization and areas that can be improved.

  • Shilla Duty Free recruits Asia’s top social media influencers to pitch K-beauty

Shilla Duty Free recruits Asia’s top social media influencers to pitch K-beauty

South Korean Hotel Shilla has recruited five social media influencers across Asian countries to hype K-beauty products through Shilla Duty Free stores. The company said that it will work with top influencers from China, Japan, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand on its “Beauty&You” project to guide customers on how to shop at travel retail online stores via social media platforms.

Social media influencers with access to a large audience can endorse opinions about products and services, which eventually leads to promote sales.

Those influencers who have partnered up with Shilla Duty Free reportedly have more than 1.7 million followers worldwide in total. They will work with the travel retailer to guide customers on how to use Shilla Duty Free online store as well as show the latest makeup trends using Korean cosmetics products via their social media channels.

The company expects its partnership with the top influencers to bolster its brand awareness across the world on top of expanding its share in online travel retail market.

Currently, its online duty-free shop is available in four languages – Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and English. It also has offline outlets overseas in international airports of Singapore, Hong Kong, and Macao as well as downtown Tokyo and Phuket.

  • Lotte Duty Free sales hit all-time high of US$6.7 billion in 2018

Lotte Duty Free sales hit all-time high of US$6.7 billion in 2018

South Korea’s top travel retailer Lotte Duty Free reported best-ever sales of 7.5 trillion won (US$6.7 billion) last year on a surge in online sales and mass purchases by Chinese merchants seeking trade in shuttling goods to China. Lotte Duty Free said its annual sales last year hit a record high of 7.5 trillion won, up 25 percent from a year-ago period. In particular, sales from the online business soared 50 percent on year to 2 trillion won, contributing 25 percent to its total domestic sales thanks to successful upgrades of its online and mobile platforms and various promotional perks like online-only products and discount options.

Lotte Duty Free’s main store in the bustling shopping district of Myeongdong in downtown Seoul remained the world’s single-largest revenue earner for three years in a row last year with annual sales up 35 percent at 4 trillion won and daily revenue at about 11 billion won as of Dec. 14.

The Myeongdong store that opened in 1980 has kept on growth with sales reaching over 1 trillion won in 2011, 2 trillion won in 2015 and 3 trillion won in 2016 on increasing demand from individual merchants from the mainland who buy popular Korean duty-free goods in bulk to profit from reselling them in China.

Lotte Duty Free has expanded its investment in domestic stores to draw more consumers. Its Myeongdong store was expanded in August 2016, and spent 10 billion won to add the Star Lounge for VIP customers in April 2018. The World-Tower store in the affluent Gangnam area of southern Seoul also posted 1 trillion won in sales last year, becoming the largest earner to reach the threshold in the district.

Meanwhile, Lotte Duty Free World Tower also posted sales of more than 1 trillion won (US$895.4 million), joining what the retailer dubbed the “One Trillion Club” on 23 December.

That represents an 80 percent increase year-on-year for the Jamsil, Seoul store, which reopened on 5 January 2017, 193 days after it was forced to close on 26 June 2016 due to the loss of its licence in an open tender.

“Even in the midst of rapid market changes, Lotte Duty Free has been able to achieve a record-breaking year, reflecting 38 years of operational expertise,” said newly appointed Lotte Duty Free CEO Lee Kap. “As a leader in the industry, we will endeavour constantly to improve our performance.”

Lotte Duty Free said that the World Tower store’s excellent tourist services and differentiated luxury brand offer had generated “remarkable achievements” in 2018. This was despite the proliferation of new duty free stores in the Gangnam area [notably the new Shinsegae Duty Free store opened on 18 July], the retailer commented.

Despite industry difficulties posed by the THAAD dispute between South Korea and China, sales of small and medium enterprise SME Korean brands at the World Tower store increased by 300 percent year-on-year. This contributed to a “win-win relationship” with SMEs, Lotte said.

Increased demand by daigou shoppers “greatly influenced” sales said Lotte. The retailer noted that such travellers had compensated for the “stagnation” of conventional Chinese tourism since the THAAD dispute erupted in March 2017. However, Korean travel retail executives and observers are closely monitoring the impact of China’s new e-commerce law, introduced on 1 January 2019, which is expected to hit the daigou business hard
